I don't care for gansta-rap or radio-rap but I really dig hip hop stuff like Jurrasic 5, De La Soul, Common, The Roots and Mos Def.
Any fans of the genre on the realms, that can point me in the direction of more cool stuff that I may not have heard of?

I like Bionic Jive - a blend of hip-hop and metal, with legit rappers handling the lyrical duties, not some whiny 19-year-old with a Shaggy goatee.
Listen to "Pump," or maybe their song about Vietnam - "Ricochet."
I don't listen as much hip hop as I used to, but you could try Talib Kweli's stuff, it's pretty close from your tastes, I think. Maybe Dead Prez too.

Thanks for the suggestions, Bionic Jive wasa bit heavy for my tastes, I am really not a metal guy at all. Talib Kwali is outstanding I have some of his stuff and I highly reccomend him to anyone searching for this genre.

Go get some Little Brother man. They are a group of three dudes that make more underground stuff and they albums are all awesome.

I just gots to get me on this thread.
I'll throw the Roots in there for good measure and second Talib, Mos, Common, Little Brother, Dead Prez, J5 et al....Lupe Fiasco is pretty good too.
Slum Village, Black Milk, Masta Ace and his new group (with Punch, Words, and Strick) or just him solo. Those are some good places to start.

hey lensnart, based on your first post i'd recommend
blackalicious - A2G ep, or Nia, their proper debut
lifesavas - spirit in stone these guys are part of the quannum projects collective. really tight, catchy flows, with some J5-esque harmonizing
dj z-trip - shifting gears - great new school turntable party album, with guest spots from Soup from J5, Busdriver, Chuck D, Aceyalone, etc. fun listen.
fort minor - the rising tied yeah i know it's the guy from linkin park but this album is really solid. great pop/hip-hop crossover stuff. surprised the heck out of me.
x-ecutioners - scratchology another turntable jam featuring all the classics from hip-hop's golden age.
and more... black eyed peas, brother ali, maybe the dangermouse/gemini collab album - all are probably up your alley.

More specifically the first BEP album. The second one was ok. The third and after is when they went all radio play happy (and added Fergie)

I do like X-Cutioners and blackalicious, and I have to agree that Fort Minor was a pleasant surprise.
I will check out the other two on your list. Thanks for the suggestions.

oh and i forgot to mention the group Ugly Duckling. they are pretty J5-ish in terms of playing it old school style rather than new school gansta

If you like De La Soul, you should try The Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, and Black Sheep. They are al part of the Native Tongues Posse.

Digable Planets, Goats, Tribe, Pharcyde, Jungle Bros., Jeru, Souls of Mischief, Del, Slug... lots more, just some off the top of my head.
I need to hit the record store and see if I can track down some old vinyl.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned Outkast yet. Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is my favorite hip hop album to this day. I have listened to it so many times, I've nearly wore out the CD.
As for Talib, I love every song I've heard of his but I don't have any of his CD's. Anyone have any suggestions?

I am more of an old-school guy myself. I have a few gangsta-guilty pleasures like NWA and the Geto Boys...but mostly I like stuff from the 80s-early 90s.

before he went solo he recorded with Mos Def under the name Black Star. their s/t album is great.
Regarding Kweli, the Reflection Eternal album "Train of thought" is pretty good too.
(Reflection Eternal was a duo gathering Kweli and DJ Hi-Tek).

If any hip hop fans haven't checked out Lupe Fiasco's new album yet, it is half awesome and half okay but totally worth the listen for the awesome half.
Also Shad is really good, he reminds me a bit of K-OS but with heavier lyrics.

My number one recommendation is K-OS.
K'naan is amazing.
Kanye West is a hip hop genius.
Jay-Z is pretty great.
Jedi Mind Tricks, Tribe Called Quest, etc.

Wale - Mix About Nothing is pretty entertaining. I'm about to give the new Vast Aire a spin.

I am really not a large fan of anything past 1990. There are a few but mostly nothing impressed me and most disgusted me. I hear that 2-Pac whould be right up my alley as an old school fan but due to the scandal that surrounded his life I really was turned off. I also didn't ever really get into Eminem...but I am finding myself starting to like some of his tunes...although I don't own any. But he has the same stigma that 2-Pac has for me personally.
