View Full Version : Mafia Game Possibilities
Insert shameless plug for DBZ mafia here.
We have 10 players, and I'm hoping for 30.
It won't be starting until there's considerably less games running.
Even if you're not into DBZ, it'll be pretty fun.

Just some questions about set-up from those who've run the games before - what's the general 'townie to mafia' ratio that should be set up to keep things fair and balanced? And how do 'second mafias' work?

The target ratio is 2 mafia for every 5 total players, however, I've found a good balance to be sort of subjective given how powerful you make each alignment.
Third party mafias are especially tricky to balance powerwise if they can recruit. Sometimes they lose tha bility to recruit when they obtain 3 members and then they gain the ability to perform hits like a regular mafia.
It's really all dependent on what direction the mod takes it. My Wild West Mafia started with 4 mafia out of 18 total and it came down to the last 3 players, each of a different alignment.
Setup is key to these things. You need to take EVERY power and come up with a contingency for how it will interact with EVERY other power. That's why these things take so long to set up correctly, IMO.

That could be terribly confusing, but kinda relaxing as everyone could just cut loose with lynching and powers. It would make it less thought intensive, or at least it could, and people who are already burdened with several games could still make time for a bizarre and random one, I would think.

So you want to be the "Inventor" role.

Less so if you don't invent anything for the last two days of the game, but up until then, it was a really kick ### power to have in the arkham game.

I am unclear on what this role does.
It gives you random powers on different nights.
On night 1, I made a bulletproof vest that might have protected me from being killed at night (not arrested).
I could use it or give it to a friend.
I used it and on night two it was destroyed by the Crime Doctor. I managed to make some Shackles to roleblock someone with.
On night three, I roleblocked Batfink and made a can with a string attacted to it. When placed across the doorway to a cell, it might scare away the first person to target the person in that cell.
On night four, I found a bomb that if it was used would kill anyone who targeted its user. It also had a 50% chance of killing the user. I gave it to batfink (who was the cop) and warned everyone not to target him. He used it, killing himself, a teammate, and a mafia member in the process.
Later, I found an object to track and later another roleblocking object.
It was pretty fun getting a new power every night.

about balance. I guess is important but with soo many people you have to do something to kill a lot of people faster. (you can ask somebody who have played in the Harry Potter game for some advice of a mass killing game. :p )

Okay, so I was thinking of other possibilities for Mafia games, and I had one come to mind. I wanted to air it out to you folks before I even think of drawing up character lists and what-have-you. It would also be contingent upon whether people think I do an okay job with Mega Man Mafia (and if there is not a clamor for my JSA mafia, which has been temporarily back-burnered but has garnered significant grass-roots support). Would there be support and interest in:
Asteroid M Mafia
Magneto's Acolytes could be townies, and there could be various X-people and other unpleasantness out to get them. Too obscure? Lemme know.

That's why I'm still holding off on the Fantastic Four game. I can run it with what I've got now, but let's let the bulls run for a bit.
And if I get to be Turner D. Century in Melkhor's Dead Guy Game, I'm down.
*scribbles down notes* Thanks! I had almost forgotten the Massacre at the Bar with No Name, that's a veritable cornucopia of potential roles buried there! :)
Alright, the last role has been written up and I must say that I'm quite pleased myself with what I ended up with:
Escape from Hell - Revenge of the *permanently* dead Marvel characters!
It'll most likely be a bit before it goes on the air (No reason not to wait for some of the other larger games to finish first), but I figured I'd mention it here in case anyone was interested
Currently 28 roles have been written, so hopefully (nearly) everyone's favourite dead marvel characters managed to beat the cut and get in!

What if they are brought back next month, in a cruel twist of events?

Well, except for a single character who I had to include despite the freshness of his grave, all the *permanently* dead characters in my game have been dead for at least a year or so by my count (though many of them for much, much longer!).
And aside from the one character previously mentioned, I don't think any of them have very good odds of ever coming back to life, outside of my game that is :)

You are Wolverine, unstoppable vigilante.
Your adamantium skeleton and healing factor make it really hard to put you down for the count. You cannot be nightkilled because of this. Also, your adamantium claws can cut through anything, which means you can target one person every night and kill them.
The only thing is you were out jogging in the rain the other day and you caught a cold, so your healing factor is working overtime to the point where you probably aren't going to survive a night kill. Also, your claws were rusted shut which means you can't kill anyone at night, either.
So I guess it is more accurate to say you are Wolverine, plain old vanilla townie.

I've been curious of late if the roles of previous "characters" would still be the same now that we've "changed" a bit playing these games. We'll use me as an example: previously I was the Doctor but now everyone expects me to be EEEVIL so, y'know, different character role if I was one in the game.

If I wasn't already locked into Secret Wars, a Buffy sequel (tentatively titled: The Eighth), and the Lovecraft/Horrour one for which I've been preparing people (by introducing aspects like Locations and Relics into current games), I would seriously be trying to do a "Doctor Who" Mafia. It would probably have a small enough following I could almost get away with running it co-current with another, come to think of it.
I've been thinking of an X-Cutioner's Song Mafia, I used to love those big splashy X-men type crossovers, and the "Who Killed Prof X" would be a great starting point.

Well, I live in a dorm, so I see everybody who is playing every day.
The only real changes are that anybody can talk to anybody and I have a dry erase board to tally votes.
Everybody comes and tells me who they target instead of pming me.
turdburglar47
10/26/2007, 05:02
Huh. The closest we came to that was running a Spy vs. Spy thing in our dorm. Everybody had suction cup dart guns, and they had to hunt down their targets in secret, each kill closing the circle of assassins that much more. Untill it got down to 4 people, and then everywhere was fair game (before, we couldn't kill each other in the dorms - it had to be on campus somewhere - it was hilarious when people would stalk each other after class and teachers would see people chasing each other with bright yellow Nerfy guns and wondering what the heck was going on). That was a blast.
Jackofhearts2005
10/26/2007, 05:07
We'd play that and all except guns of any kind are illegal in my building, including dart and squirt guns...which are sold in the convenience stores downstairs.
The justification is that a cop might mistaken one for a real gun.
Personally, I think if a cop can't tell a real firearm from a plastic pink see through fish, they should be fired, but what do I know?

Apparently everybody had unlimited day-kills but could not day-kill the day after they had done so.
Though maybe I would lift that restriction just to see how many kills somebody could get before they die.
And maybe I would give the goons and cops a one-shot day kill just so they could have some chance of winning the game.
And it's pretty easy to mod since you have about 4 pm's to keep track of.

Team me up with my bro and you've got a force that'll eat about anything. Most of the stuff I won't eat, he will. Course, two H. Pylori infections sorta screwed up my metabolism so I can't always eat as much as I'd like to.
I love how I read this post and scrolled down to see an ad screaming I CURED MY ACID REFLUX right below it. :p

Now there's a great idea. The roles could be the Samurai (John Belushi), the Church Lady, Wayne and Garth, etc. etc. You have some potential there, Truffle.

The Coneheads. Hans and Franz.
I don't think I would run it. Just putting the idea out there.

SNL Mafia would be awesome. I'm also thinking about a mafia game based on Monty Python's Holy Grail.
