View Full Version : Mafia Game Possibilities

I've decided I'd like to toss my "hat in the ring" and run one of these games. That said, got a few ideas up my sleeve for theme and thought I'd run them past folks to see what theme most appeals:
1. Return of the Dead Comic Characters
2. Music Stars - The Grab for Fame
3. The Muppet Mob
4. Horrour Movie Survival
5. Bullfinch and Blackjacks: Myth Meets the Mafia
6. Beyond the Madness of Lovecraft
7. Annihilation: Dark Matter
8. From the Mind of Gygax
9. Springheel Jack, Mad Gassers, and White Women: Folklore of the Land
I'm sure I could come up with more, but those are the ones that have been cycling through my brain for the last week or so. Any thoughts as to what appeals the most as, well, I'd like to ensure there are enough folks to play. :)

Maybe an ancient Roman or Greek theme? Or maybe the Roman/Greek deities?
Edit: Hmm, I thought you were asking for possibilities.
I'd probably choose 3 or 5, since I'm not familiar with any of the others.

How will you kill me if you're running it? (aside from m....m...mod killing... )
I'm partial to the horror, gotham and lovecraft ones in particular. I was just writing up some roles for a possible Arkham Asylum scenario, actually, bwa ha ha. :)

Yes, Carlos, that was my entire purpose for making this thread - to spoil the other games.
Antipathy - Thanks for reminding me; I did have a myth-related one in mind (think maybe it gradually transformed into the Gygax one as I focused more on, well, that would be telling :) ). Anyway, I'll edit that into the list.
Hmm...maybe the best way to do this would be for anyone who "votes" on here to list their top three picks - in order - and that'll give me an idea of where to aim next. Actually being Jack is thinking of an Arkham one, I might remove "Gotham by Knight" and leave that to him.

I will love a Greek mitology game!

Also, Watchmen.

Great idea Rokk, here are my picks, in order of preference:
1) Return of the dead comic characters
2) Annihilation: Dark Matter
3) From the mind of Gygax
That being said, however, I'd gladly play in any game you decide to run, no matter the theme :)

I'll be running a Star Trek one once I get settled into my new job. Of the ones mentioned above, I'd play in a muppets one or an Arkham one. The others I don't know, and we've already seen that knowledge of the source material can gain you insights so I'd be at a distinct disadvantage.
I'm partial to 1, 4 and 2...in that order.

Arkham would be the best one, no doubt about it. :)
Edit: Arkham, as in Lovecraft/Cthulhu mythos.

Arkham, Massachusetts or Arkham Asylum? While I still had "Gotham by Knight" up there, that left two "Arkham"-connected games on the list. :)

Aside from the times Rokk HAS taken me out I'm not referring to anything specific. It's just a sprinting rubber ball. (a running gag, don'tchya know, hyuck, hyuck, hyuck) ;)
And I, too, was thinking about starting an Arkham game as soon as the Fantasy Football League's draft is through. :ermm:
I was thinking about a Mafia game where the Mafia has been infiltrated by heros. Instead of night kills one mobster would be found tied up in the morning for the police to find.
I could PM you my notes.
I did sooo well in the 1 game I played that I'm an expert now. :cheeky:

He's in cahoots with the Marvel Knights from Game 2, pals. Let's get 'em!
I think an Annihilation theme could be awesome. Since there were a few cases in there as "Can I trust you or not?" Plus the story just rocked.

Brief "tally" of the way we seem to be swaying so far:
An indeterminate number of interest in "Arkham" - I say "indeterminate" because in a few cases I'm not sure if they mean the Gotham villains or Lovecraft's story town (which would add to the Lovecraft votes but as I removed "Gotham by Knight" to allow others, well, that means I'm not still tallying for that one. :) )
Note that I haven't factored in the "preference weight" yet...
*Return of the Dead Comic Characters: 2
*Music Legends: 1
*Muppets: 2
*Mythology: 2
*Surviving a Horrour Film: 5
*Lovecraft: 4
*Annihilation: 2
*Gygax: 2
*Folklore: 1
Lovecraft 1st, then Muppets for the novelty, and Surviving Horror 3rd.
I think it would depend on which Horror film. I have no interest in the current torture porn.

Well, being Jacin posted his thread, here's my question: would one by me, his game and Peers' "Heroclix Mafia" (plus the finishing bit of Star Wars which is likely nearing conclusion so not as big a factor) be too much for people? IE: Would folks rather I wait until Jacin or Peers finish?
Speaking only for myself, I think two games at once is definately my limit. I'd rather wait until at least one of those games finished before signing on with a new one.

Surreal Life Mafia celebrity A listers verus B listers.
The point of the game is for the A listers to find out who is posing as an A-Lister before the B-listers take their lives and more importantly their fame.
George Clooney and Brad Pitt would decide who was cool enough to be in their clique, Penn Gillette would make people disapear, Corey Haim would mess up the hiuse for everyone. Awesome.

Of the ones listed Horror movie works for me, I really have no interest in Lovecraft at all (even though I am certainly familiar with his work and the genre that that surrounds it).

Well, now that we have our own forum I am tempted to go ahead and run one anyway (as it's less "cluttering" to the "Another Realm" than if we'd still been on there; one of my prior concerns).
Thawmus, as intelligent and well-versed as you are, I can't believe you don't know anything about any of the ones listed. You've at least heard a tale of myth or an urban legend or know of a rock star, don't you? :)

Actually, I was always a pretty deprived kid, so I don't know very much about pop culture in general.
And my imagination tends to overcome me, so I usually steer clear of anything that might make me check closets for the next month.
In any case:
*Return of the Dead Comic Characters: - if this is people like Barry Allen, I'm down for it.
*Music Legends: - I'd be at a serious disadvantage
*Muppets: - could be fun. I never watched them enough to know about all the B-list characters, but I know about a lot of them.
*Mythology: - I guess I didn't see this one......this one is probably my pick.
*Surviving a Horrour Film: - could be interesting. I know a lot about guys like Freddy, Jason, etc. And I've watched way too much Hellraiser than can be healthy....
*Lovecraft: - Not into horror stories.....they depend too much on the imagination, and mine is ridiculous.
*Annihilation: - as in the Marvel series? If so, I'm cool with this.
*Gygax: - what?
*Folklore: - I know a paltry few folk tales. Doubt I'd be much use.
So, I'd say:
1. Mythology
2. Surviving horror film
3. Annihilation
4. Return of the dead comic book characters
5. Muppets
Rokk_Krinn
08/29/2007, 19:32
*Gygax: - what?
Gary Gygax - the creator of Dungeons & Dragons.

Essentially, yeah, with a focus on the more "classic" D&D characters, locations, etc. - the ones that are closer connected to Gygax's works (though not completely in all cases).

I wasn't talking about the fiction (as I've barely read any myself, though I did make an exception for Ravenloft novels). Just things like the old modules and such.
Honest truth time? I've pretty much never had much opportunity - and in many cases, desire to - play in D&D games. I buy the modules, source books, etc. for "idea supplement" and "light reading". I'm sure playing through, say, the Lost Caverns of Tsjocanth would be fun enough but I had more fun just reading about the place and the story ideas that spun off from it in my imagination.

the only D&D books i have are the PHB 3.0 and 3.5...but the dm i've been playing with at school works at a games store...so he basically has all of them (which makes for some crazy scenarios sometimes)

myths - particularly norse ones

I'm going to say "less" if only so I don't look like that big of a nerd, myself. :)
(FYI - I give a great thumbs-up recommendation to the new WoD release of "Changeling"; captures the "essence" of the variety and "not always that nice"-side of the fae very well.)
Now, if I actually played the games I might be disappointed that, say "Deadlands" was now relatively "worthless" to me - as it would have been with no one around to play it with in the first place - but being it's there just for "flavour" and "fun reads", I can still continue to get great enjoyment out of the books.

Hmm...we're seeing a swing from the "horror"-related ones towards the myths and the Muppets. I'm almost tempted - despite the number of games about to start - to run the Muppets as a relatively fast and light-hearted one (and try to balance the day phase to be going on while, say, Peers' night phase is occuring).

Honestly, I'm rather excited about some of the things I came up with for the Lovecraft Mafia game (I realize that sounds more egotistical than I mean it). It isn't the "easiest" of the games though - for participants - so with two other "majour" games already starting and "Star Wars" finishing up, not sure I'd want to hit people with Lovecraft at the same time (though it does have an odd advantage in that not knowing the background isn't a disadvantage at all, just like many of the protagonists in a Lovecraft story). That's why I'm tending to think I should do the lighter "Muppets Meet the Mob" one as a "filler" for while people are waiting out Night Phases on the "main games".
Still, I'm up for feedback on that.

I have "locations" and "items" (not 100% all the time for all characters) for the Lovecraft one - as well as a couple of the other ones - so that could up the "confusion" factor for people trying to play in multiple games...especially ship-jumpers like Melkhor who won't sign up now. ;) If I'm going to do that one, I want to make sure there are the people to sign up for it.

That's a pretty sweet role. You get nothing until Megatron/Galvatron dies, then you take over! OR better yet, you have to kill him, then take over. Perhaps that would be a better role for Starscream.

Nah, you'd start out by yourself and then recruit an army. Your power would be to either recruit another player or order a hit. You can't perform your own hits. Not sure if you should limit recruitment to Deceptocons only.
Also, I'm starting to hate the role of Jester, but you could make Wrek-gar the Jester.

Well, I would darn well play that game. Throwing in items and locations would be a new twist to Mafia that I haven't seen yet. Background would be key on that, just to understand the history of who and what, I guess. Heck, I would have to go back and browse through the stories just as a refresher. The write ups for deaths could be wicked. Lots of interesting ways to die in Lovecraft. Although I imagine you could throw in some interesting characters from different stories/cycles that could have some different win conditions.
Quantum Mafia: Your power changes whenever you correctly roleclaim or someone else figures out what it is.
Paranoia Mafia: Everyone gets six lives. However, everyone is part of at least one Mafia, usually two or more. The mod is allowed to kill people for any reason he feels like.
Indy Comics Mafia: If the thread doesn't get at least 100 views a day, it closes down because it isn't popular enough to make it.

What makes you think the locations and items would be immediately - if at all - recognizable to even a big Lovecraft fan? :) Remember, half the fun of a Lovecraftian story is being in the "unknown". Not saying I would be inventing totally new things with an audacity that I could better the works of previous writers...just that things...change...over time.

I had also considered a Harry Potter mafia game. I think, once you assign roles (blocker, doctor, cop, etc.), the spell-knowledge problem can be solved with some creativity in the write-up. For example, a roleblocker could use Expelliarmus one night to block someone, and Stupefy their target the next night, etc.
My problem is that I don't quite know what to do with Snape.

My problem is that I don't quite know what to do with Snape.
I have plenty of ideas for him.
Make him the mafia traitor and/or make him be able to have a certain number of (or create a different one every night) pollijuice potion, medical potions, etc for him to use at night.
My idea was for one death eater to be able to each of the 3 unforgivable curses at night.
One DE night kills, one DE could use imperious to control the vote/night power of his target until someone else uses imperious, one DE can crucio for information (perhaps giving him away, which would be offset by the ability to use imperious to prevent the target from giving this away).
Then let Harry track with his cloak or choose to hide with it to be invicible to night killing. Ron could stun/confound ie roleblock. Hermionie, I haven't decided.
McGonigal could be a Doc, Fred and George could have a double vote, Ginny could be a cop, and Neville could have a similar power to Snape, only with devil snares (roleblock) and venomus tentaculas (nightkill?) instead of pollijuice (all who target A target B instead and vice versa) or healing (protection).
I need to add a couple more roles.

The mafia traitor idea occured to me, but I just don't like the idea of putting one in a game. It is, however, the role that most readily fits Snape.

For a school project several years back, we were supposed to get in groups (maxed out at four or five) and write a summary for an Epic. My friend Sarge and I got together and designed one about giant robots. My friend Crazy PT went a different route. He gathered together Rockstar, Dusty J, T. Hawk, and the Byrdman and held a DND campaign to design their Epic. It went in a real funny direction: T. Hawk got beheaded in the first chapter, their owl familiar first turned into a mutant owl, than into a beautiful nymph (bad things happened there), and then into a Greater Outsider than destroyed the universe.
Guess which group Sarge and I wished we got to be part of.
I thought your D&D game was on hold while you switched over to the new server/system?
I would have been playing on Monday nights if I'd know. Sorry man. :(
It's still on hold.
I took on more responsibility at my job (without compensation, of course, because I'm a pushover, and they know it.), and as a result, that translates into more and more hours. On top of that, I'm not sleeping well again. I got 2 hours of sleep last night. And my alarm didn't even wake me. I woke up by myself, and never fell asleep again. So I'm probably going to see a new doctor soon (I haven't seen one in years).
Monday is still probably the best night for me, but I just don't know when I'm going to get around to getting it back up and going again.
Plus, I'm still not sure what format we'll be using for it, whether I want to start from scratch, or whether I want to do a completely different campaign altogether.
Thawmus' Heroes is something that typically gets me very excited about doing, whether it be a D&D campaign, novel, short stories, etc. But right now, I'm not able to give it the attention I feel it deserves. And it's been a mess thus far.
Basically, I gave it a rough draft, and let the players play in it, and found that it was a mess. And now I want to give it another draft, but I feel like I'm cheating the people who had the game ripped right out from underneath them.
I get testy about it, too. A friend of mine asked me when it's starting again, half jokingly, and I kinda snapped at him.
I'm not sure it was ever really meant to be a D&D campaign. I think I might have to scrap that notion altogether.
I had that as my second option for people to vote upon in the initial list (as the thread seems to have drifted from that it's easy to not know that. :) ).

I'm a bit partial to Seasons 2 and 3. Oz and Cordy were still around. you still have to option of using Angel and/or Angelus. Anya as Anyanka (sp?) is an option. Spike and Drusilla. True you lose Tara and Dawn, but you can easily write them in if you feel like it. Time travel spell or some such.
I'd do a combination of series. I mean, I like Oz (and he could have an awesome night power...but one he only gets on certain nights) and Cordy and Angel, but Tara and Riley and a "good" Spike would be really fun too.
Dawn I could care less about.

Scooby VILLAINS mafia, with the Scooby gang as the mafia. They're all wearing disguises like everyone else so that they can knock everyone out and tie them up each night, so they can make a safe escape from the haunted mansion they're in. And the Villains know they're there, so they've all come to squash those mangy kids, and their dog too!!!
That was what I was thinking too. Good idea for a light-hearted one like the muppets, JoH.

I could actually probably run both but right now we have: Cereal, JLA, Potter, Star Trek, X-Mansion and Mutant Massacre on the board (plus Muppets)...I feel bringing Buffy on-line would be headed towards failure.
I guess that makes sense. Maybe wait for some of those to end.

For my second mafia theme, i've got a few ideas. I just wanna know which one you guys would want to do the most:
a) DC Villains. Kind of like the Marvel villains version from a while back, but DC style.
b) Avatar: The Last Airbender. Based on the best animated show on television.
c) The Venture Bros. Just for fun.

Yep. All Anime is better in Japanese for multiple reasons:
1)Cursing. It's not changed. It's more realistic with curses every now and then.
2)Blood, it has to be shown a little sometimes...

Everyone is in a gang (IE Mafia) but no one knows it. There is only one townie, who cannot be NK'ed, and wins when only he remains. There are 4 gangs of 4-5 players each, all with the standard Don/Blocker/Tracker/Misdirector (or misc role) deal.

I agree that it has potential - would love to hear back from you on how it went - but you would want to have the townie roll switch, say, three times or something (and don't let people know that there's only one townie out there at any given time; for that matter, at most have only mason groups and no "True Mafia"...so everyone's looking for a Mafia while picking each other off. :) )

You are the White Rabbit, Neutral. You're late. Very late. You're not going to make the game until, oh, at least the beginning of day 3 (until this point, you will not show up as being a player). As for what you want to achieve - well, really, you just don't want your head chopped off. You win if you are still alive at the end of the game (this does not interfere with other win conditions, who see you as sharing their alignment as far as victory condtions are concerned).
