Recapping the week in geek.

All the hot Pop Culture news we scoured from around the web, so you don’t have to.

This is a new ongoing article series for the PopRealms section that will be going up every Wednesday.
If you have a scoop or an interesting story you think should be in ‘What’s up Wednesday’, please PM it to me!

This Wednesday: A Heroes teaser, knowing is half the battle, and Captain Jack

The Heroes hype machine has been in full swing all summer, and this 1 minute promo (http://youtube.com/watch?v=HSqVRUlvOjA) for Season 2 is no different. Nothing much new here, just a teaser of sorts, and confirmation that one of the characters isn’t really dead (not that we though otherwise. It’s a comic show, if you didn’t see a body…)
The DVD set of Season 1 also came out yesterday. It includes the original 73 minute original (and unaired) Pilot episode. I saw this at Comic Con last summer and can tell you it went in a drastically different direction than what you saw on TV.
Also check out this extensive Heroes interview (http://www.wizarduniverse.com/television/heroes/005726066.cfm) on Wizard Universe.

I didn’t even know this was in production, but then again, knowing is half the battle.
I suppose with the success of Transformers this summer it was inevitable, the mining of my childhood continues with a G.I. Joe live action movie – which now has a director attached. (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3id708c25227aae8f6d7146e4a1d3331da)
And the most important question, who would you cast as Scarlet?

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam (http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index.php?category=0&id=43550&type=0)…
This Fox series about an immortal detective sounds an awful lot like Angel. There’s really not much to say about it, besides it being pushed to mid-season. I just wanted to quote TMBG.

And now, you will face Nitro!
NBC is reportedly bringing back (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/yessssss/nbc-is-bringing-back-american-gladiators-292844.php?autoplay=true) the awesome 90’s cheesefest ‘contest’ that was American Gladiator! I hadn’t seen or even thought about this show in years, but happened to catch an epp on ESPN Classic while flipping through a limited selection of channels in a hotel a few weeks back. It’s still just as corny 10 years later, and it’s still just as addictive.

Get ready for more Captain Jack!
No not the drunken pirate… the drunken space pirate!
Fans of Dr. Who might remember the recurring character Captain Jack Harkness (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Harkness) from season 1. Well he’s been back in the UK on the Dr. Who spin-off Torchwood. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torchwood) Well, Torchwood finally premiers in the U.S., September 8 @ 9pm on BBC America. I’ll be TiVo-ing it.

Klaatu barada nikto!
No, this isn’t an effort to summon the dead in another Army of Darkness… this goes back to the original source from The Day the Earth Stood Still. A seemingly perfect title for ‘wooden’ actor Kianu Reeves.
Lets see if they can work a ‘woah’ in there somewhere.

Quick Bits:
South Park has been renewed for 3 more years!
There is a bit on TVGuide.com (http://community.tvguide.com/blog-entry/TVGuide-News-Blog/Tv-Guide-News/Exclusive-New-Buffy/800021141) on the Buffy Comic. Which if you were a fan of the show you should already be reading by now.
Forum member DarkDragoonX very enthusiastically points out that the Aliens vs. Predator 2 trailer is online. (http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=206988)
Watch Pantry Raid (http://www.stylenetwork.com/ssms-site/style.do?showId=6330) on Style network, Tonight 9/8c. This new cooking show takes the stuff you find in your own pantry and makes gourmet meals out of it. This is hosted by the executive chef of Buddakahn Philly & NY, Michael Schulson. (There’s no geek or pop culture spin to this, it’s just that the chef/host is my cousin!) Go check it out!

*New*

Discussion Topic of the week!
This was the summer of the ‘threequel’ with the second sequels of several movies coming out. With that as our inspiration -
What is your favorite all time Movie Trilogy?
(Specifically 3 movies that tell a full story. Not just a movie with 2 sequels.)

Tough call.

As an actual trilogy, I would have to say that the Bourne trilogy is one of the best.

As a good movie with two good sequels, I'd go with Indiana Jones.

I've always been a fan of all the Matrix movies ... but I haven't see a lot of the 3rd installments that came out this summer (pirates, shrek, bourne).

My pick is Terminator. I know some people thought the 3rd film was a little weak, but the final line in the movie clinched it for me. For 3 films everyone’s been trying to prevent Judgment Day and/or prevent John Conner from becoming the rebel leader. But in the final bit of T3, amid all the chaos, someone asks over the radio “who’s in charge?!” and John reluctant, but finally accepting his role, says “I am.” Fulfilling his inevitable destiny. That line made the movie for me.

Yeah, because we need another Stamford Disaster.

Hmm...noticed this got moved from "Another Realm"; apparently we're not the only ones getting used to the expansion of forums. :cheeky:

As for my favourite trilogy, eh, with me it varies based upon my mood of the time the question is asked and the "phase" I'm going through as it's no small secret I'm a bit of a movie nut.

Part of me is tempted to say "John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy" ("The Thing", "Prince of Darkness" and "Mouth of Madness" - he considers them a type of trilogy that does tell a story even if the movies don't seem interconnected), but, in truth, that's largely because "The Thing" is one of my favourite movies and I've been in a bit of a Lovecraftian-phase of late.

I would also be tempted to say "The Godfather Trilogy" because, hey, the first two films are great (though, unlike many folks, I like the first better than the second).

The Evil Dread trilogy springs to mind...though would I have thought of it if not for AZS joke putting it in my mind, I don't know (heck, if he hadn't made the joke I wouldn't have even thought of anything for "Klaatu..." besides "The Day the Earth Stood Still".)

The honest truth though is the one that I still get a kick out of no matter my "mood" or "phase" of late - as geeky as this makes me (and let's be honest, how many of us think of this answer and then don't want to admit it because it's cliche :) ) - would be the original "Star Wars Trilogy". Fond childhood memories and I still feel like a kid again every time the first Battle of the Death Star is going on.

I moved it to another realm and then back out so it would leave a redirect and possibly drive a little more traffic to this new area.

I'd believe you were working for purely altruistic reasons...

...if you weren't unleashing Nitro back on the world! :p

I like the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

I'm oddly excited to see American Gladiators coming back. Heck, I used to play Eliminator when I was a kid on makeshift playground obstacle courses. I get the feeling I'm going to feel like a complete tool when I watch it though.

I have no idea as far as trilogies go. I guess I'll say The Godfather. I can't really think of a three movie series where I really enjoyed all three.

I can't wait to see a new version of AG ... god knows I'm hooked on MXC and Ninja Warrior as is! :)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the original Star Wars trilogy.

Favorite trilogy: Easy, original Star Wars, though the new one has gone a long way towards dulling the old one's shine (not by being better, but by turning some of the good parts into dreck)

Re: GI*Joe movie. I love all things Joe. The question for me isn't who do you cast as Scarlett, it's who do you cast as the Baroness? (Rachel MacAdams)

Ps: Steve Buscemi as Cobra Commander!
