All right, let's try something a little different here, as I stay on the fringes of the Country scene.

Even I'm too young for Bob Wills, but I have enjoyed the band Asleep at the Wheel. Has anybody else given them a listen? This is music for the honky tonks and the idea is to get folks to get up and dance. They aren't quite what you'd expect if you were at the Grand ol' Opry and I'm not sure they do Branson either but they're a lot of fun to listen to. I don't see how anybody could dislike their version of "The House of Blue Lights" "Cotton Eyed Joe", "Hot Rod Lincoln" or "(Get Your Kicks on) Route 66". Amazingly despite their country cred, the closest thing I can think of like them is The Manhattan Transfer. This is good stuff if you've got an open mind and are willing to listen to something outside the traditional country "box".

Seriously? Nobody cares about or has heard of Asleep at the Wheel? You folks don't know what your missing.

I had a chance to see them in Nashville. They came on after Doyle Dykes and were even joined on stage for some awesome jump swing by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. The joint was jumping and that's not a pun!

You didn't get any cobwebs on you while you were visiting this thread did you? If I was a wealthy man, and I wanted to throw a country themed party, Asleep at the Wheel would be the first Band I hired.

Well Eddy if you win Lotto in the near future, can you throw that party in December/January ??? We are visiting family in the States at that time and it would work in perfectly!! :)

Why Soitainly, Nyuk,Nyuk,Nyuk. ( How do you like my Curly Howard imitation? It might have lost a little in the translation over the internet.)

I'll even spring for Emmylou Harris and whatever Flying Burrito Bros Alumni I can track down as a bonus.
Might as well make it a Hellacious throw down. You and DTM can dance to "Cotton Eyed Joe" and "House of Blue Lights" all night long. Be sure to sneak in some good Kiwi beer.

Seriously though if you happen to be passing through the St Louis area feel free to stop by the Casino Queen in East St. Louis right by the Mississippi. I'll be the slightly greying red head working one of the craps tables Friday through Saturday nights. If I don't look to happy it's probably because I'm highly annoyed with my coworkers and I'm sure your visit would do a lot to lighten my mood. (It's possible I might be annoyed with a pain in the brain player.)
You know how DTM says he doesn't smile ever? There are people who would say that about me, the truth is I only smile when it's genuine. I never have learned how to fake it. When I try, it looks like I want to bite you. so I don't try.

I'd probably hire Hank Williams III, but that's me. Honestly though, Asleep at the Wheel were better than advertised and the presence of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy took everyone by surprise. Together they did a Bob Wills tune, which I couldn't tell you the name of anymore, but I can tell you there was a lot of dancing and people hootin' and hollerin'.

and no, I hadn't get any cobwebs on me, but if I did, I'd be just like Kiwi and I'd spit too.

Well if St Louis is anywhere near NY, Michigan or Washington DC then you gotta a deal- we'll definitely look you up - though Ive got a 15 year old son who im pretty sure wouldnt be allowed in a casino?
You made me smile when you said you dont smile cause I know exactly what you mean. Thats what Dan looks like when he tries to fake a smile - doesnt really work at all. :)
I'd hire Kenny Rogers for my shin dig if I win Lotto! And Id fly you and your families over here for it!!!
Hey Velvet, you talking about Hank Williams III reminds me of when my father would listen to Hank Williams singing Old Shep and he'd cry his eyes out after a few drinks cause it reminded him of his first sheep dog. Not saying my parents were party animals but ahhh those were the days lol

Well, now if my smile is sincere, everything's peachy but if I ain't feelin' it, I'll never be able to make you think I do.

Sadly, the closest place you'll be to St Louis would be Michigan and that would be at least an eight hour drive from here, if not more. Too bad because I have a sixteen year old daughter your son might enjoy meeting.

As for Kenny Rogers, I'm thinking that botched plastic surgery thing might limit his appearances for a while.

Yeah! weird eh - it went from Zero to 65 in a flash. Funny thing was Dan's movie threads counted as 'a post' for a few days and my posts started increasing and then I discovered these Country Music threads and as the saying goes: 'You can take the girl out of the Country but you cant take the Country out of the girl' hence why I was drawn to these threads!
We live in Christchurch, NZ - home of the first casino which first opened in 1997 or so. When it first opened I sooooo think I could have become addicted, but now - its like meh - once a year type thing. Me and Dan usually go there for an outing (breakfast, gambling what have you) on New Years Day which has become kind of a tradition!

If only my wife had your iron will, Duchess. By the way I intend to abdicate my throne as soon as there are more threads started by other people then I have in this forum. Since I will undoubtedly start new threads as I think of them I might have a long reign. Is your son aware of his official title of the Dukester?
And when is DTM going to give us his two cents worth around here? (Or is it two schillings in New Zealand?)

Yep, I think you'll be the King of Country for a while now. DTM isnt much of a Country kind a guy so he can stick to his own part of the forum! :p
Ive informed my son, Scott of his title and I regret to inform you, Ye Honourable Redneck, that he is not as respectful of his title as myself and the Wizard of Oz are! :)

I was disappointed that I couldn't find their version of "House Of Blue Lights".
Man, I'll tell ya, the cut and paste thing still ain't workin' out. I'm tediously typing it all in and my eyes ain't what they used to be. I'm having trouble reading some of those tiny little letters. I just added some Gram Parsons links on that thread and some Earl Scruggs links for the bluegrass thread and it took forever.

So yer not sold on "ye honourable Redneck'?

I still say; if I were throwing a party and I could afford it, I'd hire "Asleep at the Wheel"
I'm really disappointed I can't find a Youtube link for "House of Blue Lights".

There's no such thing as "too young for Bob Wills". I "discovered" Bob back in the Eighties (when I was twenty-something) and I've been a die-hard Texas Playboys fan ever since.

That's kind of the route I took as well -- Commander Cody to AATW back to Bob.

The local Classic Country station plays Bob Wills every so often. And last Saturday (on the way to a Clix tournament), they played Tex Williams' "Smoke Smoke Smoke That Cigarette" -- I almost drove off the road.

I need to get me some Commander Cody on CD. My albums are all packed away. I'm sure I've heard Bob Wills via C.C. I just wasn't paying as close attention in those days. It's been a while since I jammed to their version of Hot Rod Lincoln.

I think I've recommended them elsewhere in this forum, but if you like the old timey music, check out The Wilders (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hurSNhEFG0o). Visit their homepage here (http://www.wilderscountry.com/). (Full disclosure - I'm kind of a friend of the band, but that doesn't influence my opinion of their music.)
