View Full Version : Motley crew of thugs after secret treasure game
This game will be strictly limited to one round per day, Monday-Friday, to give all participants plenty of time to respond each time.
There will be eight players. Each of you is a ruthless thug. You've all joined together because you've learned that an ancient Aztec idol, made of jewel-encrusted gold and valuable beyond price, is located in a lost temple hidden in the jungle.
You must work together to recover it, but only one of you can be the winner. At some point, each of you wll have to decide when it's time to double cross the other.
When you sign up, you have 30 points to divide between these four attributes:
Intelligence
Action
Agility
Treachery
For instance, Player #1 might post:
Intelligence-7
Action--8
Agility--10
Treachery--5
Each round, you'll encounter some sort of danger on your trek to the temple and later your search inside it.
To pass each danger without suffering a casuality, you must combine your attribute ratings.
For instance, perhaps you have to cross a section of floor without triggering a booby-trap. The danger might require a total of 10 Intelligence Points and 15 Agility points. You each post which of your abilities you employ. You may only use one Atribute per round. Player #1, for instance, might contribute his Intelligence Points. Player #2 might contribute his Agility. As long as a total of 10 Intelligence and 15 Agility are contributed, then the booby trap is bypassed. If it's less, then one randomly chosen person is killed.
DOUBLE CROSSING: After posting what Attribute you are using for the current round, you may PM me that you are double crossing another player.
I will then generate a random number from 1 to 10 and add it to your Treachery rating. I will add another random number to the Treachery rating of your target. If your total is equal or greater than his, you do away with him. I post publically that he has been backstabbed by an unknown assaliant.
If the target number is higher, you are killed and I post that you were done away with when you were caught trying to betray a comrade.
The game ends when the idol is recovered. At that point, all the survivers have an open gun battle with each other. Random numbers are added to each person's Treachery rating and the highest number wins. If there's a tie, there's a second round. When there is only one surviver, he or she escapes with the idol and becomes wealthy beyond avarice.
Obviously, if there are only a few of you left alive for the final fight, then your chances of winning are greater. But if too many of you are backstabbed too early, there's a good chance none of you will live to find the idol at all. You must all balance treachery with practicality.
The game lasts 10 rounds. It's first come, first serve. When you post that you want to play, please also post how you divide your Attribute ratings.

One more slot to fill, then we're good to go.
There's not one more person out there who wants to be a ruthless, backstabbing thug? I find that hard to believe. I've had most everyone on this site pegged as a ruthless, backstabbing thug for years.

You all set sail down a dangerous river filled with rapids on a small tramp steamer. A day into the journey, you run aground on a sand bar. While waiting for the tide to rise, your boat is attacked by dozens of huge crocodiles. Not one of the ugly reptiles is less than 12 feet long.
It will take both quick thinking and firm action to fight them off. You need a total of 30 Intelligence and 25 Action to win through without losing a man.
You all have until 4 pm Eastern time tomorrow to post which Attribute you are using. Anyone who fails to post by then is considered to be cowering in fear while the others fight (or subtly hoping you lose so someone gets killed, figuring the odds are it won't be him).
Also, anyone who wants to may PM me that they want to double cross someone else (you must name a specific target) and do away with that person. Remember, you risk death yourself if you do this.
I will post results at 4 pm tomorrow. So no one ever gets to where he feels rushed, I will be fairly strict about waiting until 4 pm each day to post the results of the last round and let you know what danger you face in the next round.

I would like to go on record as saying for once - being this is a bit more complicated of a game and "game-like" enough that I don't want him out of it (as opposed to goofing on him by assassinating him during the Alien Shifter game :) ) - I am not going to try targeting JackAssterson...
...at least not until later (if we both survive that long).

After traveling several days down river, you stop at an isolated Indian village to purchase some mules and begin the overland portion of your jungle trek.
But your information about this particular Indian tribe was incomplete—you all had no idea they were cannibals. They plan to “have you all for dinner” this evening. Only some fast talking and a lot of sneakiness will allow you to get away into the jungle and continue your journey.
You need a total of 32 Intelligence and 32 Agility to make your escape without losing anyone.
No stinkin' injun's going ta have me fer lunch!
I've got a respectable 8 agility going towards getting us all outta dis one!
Oh, and remember--PM me anytime if you want to backstab anyone. Backstabbing takes place AFTER resolving the current round, so whacking one of your companions does not lessen your chances of getting out of the village alive.

True.
I realized I don't really have anything to gain by betraying people now.
However, I also realized that I can use the threat of betraying someone to keep people from doing what Shel is doing.
Granted, with the lowest betrayal rating, it benifits Shel the most for random people to die failing at tasks, but still.

For several days, you all trek through the steaming jungle, getting closer and closer to the lost temple. But then, one night, treachery rears its ugly head.
JackofHearts2005 tries to do away with KitsuShel. But as he approaches her with his bowie knife held ready, he steps on a twig. The sudden snap awakens Shel, who quickly draws her trusty .38 and puts a slug between JOH2005's eyes.

If it had been
Low-Carb Storytelling in the Pulps, Comics and Radio: How Technology and Paris Hilton Changed Popular Fiction in America and Made Me Lose Thirty Pounds in Thirty Days
it would have sold millions.
If anyone playing this game is interested (and if I can do it via e-mail) I will e-mail an MP3 file containing an episode of an old-time radio show called "Escape." This episode is titled "Blood Bath," stars Vincent Price and is the best ever "motley crew in the jungle double-crossing each other" story.
I'm not entirely sure if I can send the file via e-mail or not, but I'll be happy to try. PM me an e-mail address if you're interested.
I've heard that one, so now I know the end.

CHAPTER 4:
Working together like a well-oiled machine, you all expertly track down and kill the huge jungle cat before it gets any of you.
But the machine apparently needs some oil. That night, the femme fatale KitsuShel tries to quietly do away with theanalogkid. But she's not quite fast enough or quiet enough and instead falls to his blazing automatics.
Only four of you left.

Nearing the secret temple, you find you must cross a bottomless crevasse. A shaky log bridge lies across the gap--if you can shore this up and cross carefully, you can cross without losing anyone else.
You'll need 18 Intelligence and 17 Agility.
The next round will be resolved at 4 pm Eastern time on Monday. Motley crews of ruthless thugs always take weekends off.

It looks like you guys are going to cross the ravine safely. Official results will be posted at 4 pm as usual.
CHAPTER 5:
You cross the ravine without losing anyone. Astonishingly, no one wakes up the next morning with a knife in his back.
Finally, after days of treking through the seemingly endless jungle, you approach the temple. But before reaching the structure, the cannibals you thought you left behind attack!!! Apparently, Rokk Krinn wasn't enough of a meal to satisfy them.
If you can make it to the temple, which the cannibals consider taboo, they will retreat. But it will take some sharp fighting to get there without losing anyone.

Dun dun dun. Time for a commercial break. The suspense and feel of a radio show with this is great, Kal. I hope you do more of these.
CHAPTER 6: After blasting your way through the cannibals, all four of you make it to the temple. The cannibals run from this taboo structure.
You find an entrance only partially blocked by rubble and dig your way in. But a small chamber just inside the temple contains----AN ANCIENT BUT STILL LIVING AZTEC MUMMY!!!!
The mummy demands a blood sacrifice. You cannot go on unless one of you is given to the mummy to have his heart torn out and eaten.
Which of you will it be? There are two ways of determining this.
If three of you can agree upon the same person, then that person is the sacrifice.
Otherwise, a seperate random number from 1-10 will be generated for each player and added to his Treachery rating. The person with the LOWEST score is the sacrifice.
You have until 4 pm Eastern tomorrow in order to decide to sacrifice a specific team member or allow random chance to decide.
THE TEAM:
JackAssterson: IN10; AC6; AG6; TR8
Melkhor: IN5; AC9; AG8; TR8

I say we let drooly go play with the dead injun, I'm sure they'll have lots a fun together!
And besides, I don't trust that shifty glint in his unfocused eyes lately...
I nominate PetenLiz for sacrifice!

Chapter 7: You push Petenliz into the mummy's arms and ignore his death screams as you continue on.

You need 8 Intelligence and 15 Agility to get through safely.

CHAPTER 8:
You pass through the narrow corridor safely, but then come to a room where the ceiling begins to lower down towards you and the door behind you slams shut.
There is a narrow tunnel exit, but it takes several minutes for each of you to squeeze through one at a time. The last person through the tunnel stands a 50% chance of getting crushed before he gets out.
Who will be last? A random number from 1 to 10 will be generated for each player. The player with the lowest number goes last and stands a chance of getting flattened.
Each player may, if he chooses, permenently sacrifice 1 or more points of his Treachery to increase his chance of not being last. Every Treachery point sacrificed adds 1 to the random number for that player.
Remember, though, that this would hurt your chance of being the winner of the final gunfight after you find the idol in Chapter 10.
You must post publically the number of Treachery points (if any) you want to sacrifice.

I sacrifice no treachery. I do, however, hold my rabbit's foot firmly and grease the boots of my erstwhile comrades.
Gee whiz, I've got you guys conditioned to respond quickly every day just like Pavlov had his dogs conditioned to drool when he rang a bell.
Will one of you end up a pancake on the floor of the ancient tunnel? Tune in tomorrow to find out.
theanalogkid
09/13/2007, 17:22
Woof! Woof!
Chapter 9:
You all scrabble for the tunnel exit. After some pushing and shoving, JackAssterson proves to be the last one out. But he squeezes into the tunnel in the nick of time!!!! All of you survive.
In the next chamber, you are suddenly attacked by a flock of large, mutant vampire bats!!! Only quick and hard fighting will get you out of this one!!! You need 13 Agility and 9 Action to fight off the bats without taking a loss.
Remember also that this is the last round where you can backstab someone. After Chapter 10, all survivors shoot it out for possession of the idol. (Ironically, all of you have identical Treachery ratings, meaning you all have an equal chance of winning/losing that final fight.)
Remember also, though, that a sudden burst of backstabbing by more than one of you will leave just one of you alive. One man alone cannot survive the final challange in coming up in Chapter 10.
Is it time to start "accidentally" using the wrong attribute in order to thin out the herd? (But also taking the one-out-of-three chance that YOU are the one killed?) We'll have to wait and see.

Curse you and your sudden but inenavable betrayal!
The bats swoop down on you--but the expected volley of gunfire from Melkhor doesn't come. Desperately, you fight your way through the bats.
But one of you doesn't make it. JackAssterson is the randomly chosen victim, falling under the talons of a vampire bat. Laughing evilly, Melkhor withholds the barrage of bullets that might have saved Jack.
The remaining two motley thugs, clothes torn, bleeding from many cuts and abrasions, ammo nearly exhausted, reach the central chamber of the temple. And there it is--the small gold idol, encrusted with rubies, worth a king's ransom back in civilization.
But rising up in front of the idol is the animated skeleton of Hernando Cortes, cursed because of his brutal conquest of the Aztecs to guard the temple for all eternity.
Bullets from your guns have no effect on the skeleton as it come towards you. Snatching up rusty swords from the weapons that lie scattered on the floor, you prepare for your final battle.
You must have a total of 16 Action to defeat the skeleton of Cortes.
No more backstabbing attempts allowed. If you both survive this fight, then you immediately have the final gun battle to determine who treks home with the idol.
Ironically, your odds are fifty-fifty no matter what you do. You can throw the fight with Cortes with a 50% chance of surviving or you can cooperate with each other, defeat the skeleton and then take a 50% chance of the final gun fight.

CHAPTER 10:
Snatching up swords, you both face off against the skeleton of Cortes. But at a key moment in the fight, theanalogkid backs off and give Cortes a chance to fight.
Luck is with theanalogkid--Cortes drives his sword through Melkhor. theanalogkid then smashes Cortes' skull.
So the quest is over. theanalogkid--sole survivor of the motley crew of ruthless thugs--picks up the idol and gazes at it with greedy eyes. Soon, he'll be back in civilization, rich beyond the dreams of avarice, wildly spending his ill-gotten gains.
The rest of you spend eternity rotting in the jungle. Or, in one case, dissolving in the stomachs of the cannibals. BUT at least you won't have to fill out all those darn tax forms that theanalogkid now has to deal with.
THE END.
