Well, looks like McGahee is okay. He's suffered a concussion and major whiplash, but he's going to recover.
That's good news.

News of that hit and subsequent injury was huge(!!) around my neck of the woods. Wives at the busstop were asking me for updates. My oldest daughter came home from school and mentioned teachers discussing it. I'm glad he's okay. Guy's had a rough career...

Well I have been staying away from this thread as I did not want to jinx the team, But what a great game, what a great team. How many times this year did all appear lost only to watch the Steelers Pull a W out of the hat late in the game.
And some clown in another thread says the refs gave the Steelers the game. WTF was he watching????
Welcome to SIXBURGH! Home of the Super Bowl Champions!

Definitely one of the better SB's in recent memory! The Cards were a fast-attack scoring machine - they just waited too long to bring out the plan. Ben and the O-line were great, though FWP should have cut to the outside more frequently. Not much else can be said of Holmes. He's truly turning into a big-time WR right before our eyes...(which prob means he'll leave for buku-bucks in another couple of years.). I was cheering Silverback after the Pick-6, but booing him after the Unnec. Roughness he put on that Card player - seems like frustration (of being held on just about every rush...) broke his composure.
Gotta go watch the replays...

This game was deservedly DVR'ed and will be watched again in its entirety. I am not a Cards or Steelers fan, but the game was played with much heart and it was sheer pleasure to be a spectator. Easily one of the best SB's I have ever watched, without a doubt.
Congrats to the Steeler Nation - make sure you get your SR LE chase Terrible Towel while you're at it! :)
Definitely a great game. I'd still say that it's a toss up between this year and last year for best Super Bowl. But this one, I'll take. I never thought I'd get to see the Steelers win once before I reached 30. But twice? That's just awesome.
Only thing I didn't like was that they didn't perform a formal booth review on that fumble. There's no question in my mind, nor the officials' minds, that it was indeed a fumble. But after the Steelers have been accused of stealing the last Super Bowl they won, I would have really appreciated seeing the naysayers quelled a little. It's getting pretty tiring to hear that garbage all the time, and now we're going to get to hear it some more.

It's called Lombardi envy. Its where the Steeler haters come at and try to convince themselves that the Steelers didn't earn this. Yes, I'm a Steeler fan, but the only call I thought was bad was the roughing the passer call on Ben. Personally, I thought the first Warner fumble was a fumble, but I can see why they overruled it. All the holding calls (on both sides) seemed legit. Its only legal to tackle someone if they have the football!!!
Awesome game! Big time poise by Big Ben on that last drive. His stats might not look pretty, but he comes through in the clutch time and again. Steeler Nation rejoice!

Just awesome...
Pittsburgh schools delayed openings two hours Monday to allow for the celebration, but other schools were following suit after the victory. TV news stations were scrolling school delays for Monday as if it were a snow day.

Coulda woulda shoulda. It's also pretty selective. Warner also shouldn't have thrown the interception at the half. Or somebody should have tackled Harrison. If they stopped him, or the Cards scored some points there it would've been a different game, maybe a different outcome. Blaming the refs is easy. Too easy.

but he spoke truely...The Mannings and the Rooneys have owned this half of the decade.
An article last week spoke about the 4 upsets in the 4 AFC Championship games the Steelers had in the last 15 years. It went on about the quality of the organization and that there could have been a whole lot more Lombardi's if not for those missteps and the future looks to continue the same. If Tomlin stays with the team long enough it would not be a stretch to say the Steelers could have another 6 Lombardis before all is said and done down the stretch!!

Hopefully there will be no local idiot newsmen calling any of the players the wrong name like in the last parade...
but he spoke truely...The Mannings and the Rooneys have owned this half of the decade.
I understand and generally agree with the "Lombardi trophy is the only yardstick" argument, but it's still hard for me to have the Patriots discounted that way. 18 straight wins in one season wasn't nothing. I also tend to think organization counts. The Steelers won their two, so yeah, they're the "elite". But the "Mannings" aren't an organization. It's notable that niether Manning team made the SB this year. If they show me a second SB win (next year) I'll say they "owned" half the decade. Not before. But if the Patriots win...

Ifs and coulda beens. If Brady hadn't been injured ten minutes into the season...
If Plaxico didn't shoot himself in the leg
If Kurt Warner didn't throw an interception
If James Harrison didn't run an interception back 100 yards for a touchdown
If the Patriots went 19-0
If Scott Norwood didn't miss wide right.
Seriously, ifs means nothing cause they didn't happen. The Steelers won their 6th championship, that's what happened. They are currently the winningest franchise in modern football history with 6. Hypothetical championships don't matter. Be happy with what you got.

You know I understand why folks complain about big Ben and other quarterbacks that dont have stellar numbers. I understand that when the casual fan sees the super offense and the super plays and they think this is the best of the best.
BUt, lets take a moment to look at some facts. There was one year that Wizenhunt took control of the Steeler offense and Ward and Plaxico Burress were both 1000+ yard receivers and a highe yardage offense {kinda like Fritzy and co this year} The team was one and done in the playoffs due to no TIME MANAGEMENT CONTROL OF THE GAME. {cards D was tired and that is the 'game plan' so that Big Ben could make all those late game heroics that we've seen.
IT is a style of football, rather than one team being better offensively than another. Some Casual fans dont get it.
Look at what Montana's Niners did to Marino in the super bowl, look at what the giants did to Bill Kelly, look at the losses all those amazing Run 'n Gun teams {Warren Moon anyone???Who?? only the guy with the most passing yards in football history}, All those early Denver Teams, Bills teams, Philip Rivers, Palmer, etc, even Warner's teams have one thing in common...no ball/time control and that is a style of game that is flashy, fun, great highlights and super stars for weekly spoorts writers, but ALso A PROVEN way to not win the big games. So if Kurt and Fritzy want to win a big one down the road, they need give up some of the flash and be on a team that will be a little grittier, a little dirtier, and not so spectacular and then they might get their shot. The Rooneys got it right...they want their coaches to play the 'tuffness' game...not the showboat game.
That is football,
wes
ps: the same applies to Hockey. The teams that are all style rarely hold up to the stronger team. Does that mean one team is all weak? No Hockey players are all tough; it is a style of play...high scoring vs toughness. history in both sports show that toughness wins out in the playoff.

..."Super Bowl XLIII achieved the largest television audience in United States history.
According to national ratings data released Tuesday by Nielsen Media Research, an audience of 151.6 million viewers watched the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 27-23 win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
It surpassed last year’s record Super Bowl audience of 148.3 million, who watched the New York Giants spoil the New England Patriots perfect season with a 17-14 victory...."

Good Draft class IMO. Steelers clearly addressed the needs. I really love the late-round (steals...) Frank "The Tank" and Shipley picks.
Can't wait for the season to officially start. Got my schedule hung with care. A bye week right about in the middle of the season, 4 games already in Primtime, w/ (most likely) another 2/3 when the flex scheduling gets underway later in the year. Then, there is the Packers game I'm taking the wife to in Dec!! Should be another great year!

There's a link at the bottom to another article, where Rod Woodson admits to having lobbied for him significantly. Rod really really really wants to see this guy in there.
Look, I love Dick LeBeau, but even I didn't know that he still held NFL records as a player. When you slap that together with his coaching career.....he definitely has earned the status.
As best as I can figure, the Steeler were just getting all the ugly crud out of the way in the first game and happened to come out with the win in spite of that.
There were spots when they were shining, but when they weren't...whew.
But the books say 1-0, so I'm happy.

I knew Sepulveda would be a boon in his return to the team, but it seemed that everything was more focused when those guys were on the field. More crisp. Overall a great defensive game, but the running game has got to figure things out. I'll take the win, but we're gonna at least a bit of the ground attack as the season continues...

Our offensive line is absolutely terrible. That was our problem last year, and it'll be our problem this year. They cannot push people when they run block, and they lose people when they pass block.
We lost guys like Alan Faneca, and have done absolutely 100% nothing to replace them. Instead, we got more defensive players for a defense that's chugging along perfectly as-is.
It seems to me that we're constantly addressing needs for the team, 2 years after we should have addressed them. We got Mendenhal 2 years after we should have already gotten some new running legs to back up parker. We got Sweed, when it has been clear for 4 years now that Ben needs a high target. There's a reason Nate Washington had so many game-changing catches. He was tall.
And now, we've needed a new offensive line for a while, and spend nothing more than a 6th rounder on new blood. Ben spent more time on the ground, than standing, all last year. Our RB's can't punch up the middle, and only break out when they go wide and catch some blocks from WR's like Holmes and Ward. And our OL was apparently the last possible concern for the Front Office. :tired:
EDIT: However, 100% correct about our special teams. Sepulveda is joyous to watch in action. He puts our defense in beautiful positions, every game. It's hard to get excited about a punter, but this guy is really good.

1. Parker's not washed up. We have the worst O-line ever. This is evidenced time and time again. Just WATCH the O-line.
2. Parker hasn't been in the league for more than 5 years or so. He's got a ways to go.
3. The young talent they have, wasn't any better last night. And last time we started him, he had a season-ending injury right away.

As far as the O-Line. I feel, overall they need help, but Ben did have plenty of time on a few of those passes. Whether that was due to Tenn only rushing 3 or 4 or whether they needed the spark that the game was on the line I don't know, but they did have flashes of a decent line. Hopefully, as the was the first game, we'll see them getting better as a unit.

I think their pass blocking is definitely hampered by the slow decision making by Ben. I don't know if our receivers are just not getting open, or what.
My main problem with them is the run blocking, which was something that guys like Faneca were very, very good at. There's just no holes.
Titans' D-line doesn't have Haynesworth anymore, either. I think that's already showing.

Steelers fans had to puke thinking about the last two weeks. Not have Palamolu is huge.
Yeah, not really too happy with how horribly we're doing. Not happy with the front office, for neglecting a weakness we've had for 2 years in a row, now (Offensive Line? What's that??). Not happy with the players for not being able to step it up when a primary playmaker is injured. I mean, I'm sorry, Polamalu is great, but this defense has been great with him on the bench in the past. I don't know if the other guys just lost confidence, or what, but it's getting pretty frustrating.
And yes, some of the analysts are correct. When they're in the playoffs, they're going to be a different football team. Sure.
They kinda have to GET THERE. They're already going to have to play against a fantastic Baltimore Ravens team twice, and the Bengals have already got a win over them.
Glad we addressed the passing game 3 years late, though. Good job? :tired:

I thought I heard a stat that they have a losing record when he is on the bench compared to when he is playing.
I don't particularly care for those stats. They're often misleading, or intentionally disregarding basic human logic. They're a terrible team without Max Starks, or Ben Roethlisberger, or James Farrior. Those players have far more to do with winning or losing the football game.
I'm not saying he doesn't have an impact on the game. But a SS does not a football team make.

Argueably the best safety in the league probably has a huge swing on the game, and what the defense does as a whole.
And those stats are fact, they lose more games when he is out compared to when he is in. The way he plays frees up the other defensive players to be more reckless because he is there as a huge safety net.
Having that good of a linebacking core should be able to make up for it. The Bengals are also better than people thought, IMO.

Didn't say it wasn't true. Just saying it's misleading. If you don't understand how stats can be misleading, just look at last weeks MNF. I'll bet you can pull up similar stats for games that Ben's been missing in action. And those would have far more merit.
Having that good of a linebacking core should be able to make up for it. The Bengals are also better than people thought, IMO.
Agreed and Somewhat agreed...
The Bengals are better than people thought, I'll agree to that. However, I think they're also better than the Bengals think they are. We saw what they were capable of, several years ago now, and they have virtually the same offense now, that they had then.
But now....their defense is a turnover machine. Which is so utterly uncharacteristic for the Bengals. They're giving their offense more opportunities to hold the football, which is giving Palmer, Ochocinco, and company, a chance to finally gel their offense again.
All in all, as a Steelers fan, it's kinda scary. And while I'm not happy about the loss, I can't say it was unexpected, after the way both teams played last week. Frankly, at this rate, the Ravens are going to pound the carp out of us.
I'm not a fan of blowouts, even for the Steelers.
But after the last two losses, I'm loving every second of this game so far.
If our offensive line plays like this every game, I take back everything I said about them. Everything.

Well, I'm glad we decided to actually go in for the kill at the end, but handing the ball off a bunch doesn't do that, when there's 9 in the box.
No, if there's 9 in the box, we should be passing the ball. They had only stopped us twice thus far, we could have scored again easily.
Boo to Collinsworth for pointing out how Gates was uncoverable, and untackleable in the open field, by the dimebacks, and then actually WONDERED why Harrison was covering him later.
Maybe because he can bench press Gates?? :cheeky:
Good for the Steelers, though I'm glad I benched the defense in favor of the Niners.
Never thought I'd be saying THAT... :cheeky:
Yeah, anyone playing 49er's D is going to be happy this week. 3 Defensive TD's and a shutout. And all the stats that go with it. :nervous:

I don't know if it's done calculating... right now it's at 39 points.

I'm not a fan of blowouts, even for the Steelers.
But after the last two losses, I'm loving every second of this game so far.
I LOVE when the Chargers lose as they are a team I do not like at all.

One of my best pickups last week. I've been watching the 49ers games and their defense has been playing pretty good. When I saw who their next opponent was, it was a pickup I couldn't resist. Not too mention the defense I had stunk it up the past few weeks. :squareeye
I still really feel that the 9'ers are 4-0 at this point. Yes, they lost to the Vikes, but they lost due to a ridiculously good catch in the final seconds. They are looking pretty good right now.

dont forget Big Ben and the O-Line on WWE tonight!
dont forget Big Ben and the O-Line on WWE tonight!
I did my very best to forget it, actually.
6:23 in the 4th...
Holy COW!
6:09 in the 4th...
What the...?
Definitely a good game to watch. Mendenhall and Wallace give me a lot of hope for the future of our offense. Can't say enough about how the defense is playing, nor Santonio Holmes, nor the O-line.
Can I get another "Huh?"
1:00 in the 4th...
Holy COW!

Thank you Steelers. I like Favre but I like the Packers better.
I'd like to think that Ben could have brought the team back to the endzone at the end of the 4th.
But I'm not going to ##### about him not even being given the opportunity, thanks to two defensive scores.
I hate to make this the post that brings this thread back to life, but so be it:
I've been a Steelers fan for 18 years. I liked Ben Roethlisberger. I own his jersey, and will likely end up either selling or burning the thing.
If he is not traded from the team by preseason, I will be a Steelers fan no longer, and just enjoy watching the NFL in general. And, likely, root against them on a regular basis.
The dude quite obviously has become a sexual predator. The accounts of his entire "strategy" when doing these things, has made it abundantly clear that if he isn't going to sexually assault a girl, he's going to make damn sure they're afraid of it happening. Carrying his goons around with him, makes the whole thing sickening.
Rooney? Trade him. Get him the hell off my team.
Good on Goodell for suspending him for 6. But it should be a year.

There's a double-standard on this team which is why he's still here disrupting the team.
While I'd lost respect for Ben long ago, this has made me lose respect for the Rooneys. They wear this badge of decency and when really confronted with doing the right thing when a really good player is at stake, their principles take the back burner. I have no doubt that if it had been nearly any other player on the team, he'd be gone. (*cough*wake and bake*cough*)
So the Steeler Nation consensus was pretty much that we'd be happy coming out of the suspension with a 2-2 record. I can't say that I'd be surprised if we come out at 4-0!!! (I still wish that we'd dumped Ben, but since it looks like we're keeping him, I guess I'll make the best of what we have.)
Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!
3-0
Nothing undoes a previously crappy week like having the Steelers beat the Browns.

I Can't agree with this sentiment.
Abuse, Assault and Harassment are all disgusting. But so is hearsay, rumor, and gossip. We have a system in this country for dispensing justice, reforming criminals and the like. We have a system designed to root out the truth. If that system isn't working equally and fairly we need to attack that system, because that is the root problem.
The fact that people may get away with disgusting crimes because the system isn't functioning doesn't give people the right to demand justice based on Rumor and innuendo. It gives us the responsibility to reform what is obviously broken.
I don't know what Ben is responsible for, I do Know he has a lot of money. and a lot of money is a great way to get out of trouble in this country. and that is a problem because that creates unequal standards - classes of citizenship. It makes double standards.
I also know that a lot of money is a good target. a great way for a lawyer to sue for a small fortune and a great target for gold diggers.
Furthermore I also know that getting Drunk leads to stupidity violence and generally bad decision making and bad recollections of events.
For the record I'm not saying I don't think something happened, What I am trying to say is 1) we don't know what happened 2) If we don't trust our legal system to find out what happened and set it right we have much bigger problems than a few disgusting incidents and 3) punishing a person for what we think we know is an act of tyrants - it's what due process and the legal system were designed to avoid.

Well, that's great, but:
A. That our system doesn't work isn't exactly new information
B. It doesn't mean he isn't showing a pattern of behavior
C. The facts of the case, surrounding what happened prior to the alleged incident, make it pretty clear that he's a scumbag. Can it be proven that it happened? No. Is she pressing charges anymore? No. Does Ben have two bodyguards who are police officers, who blocked off the area during the alleged incident, and one of them lost their jobs afterward for their actions? Yes.
There's a pretty blunt and clear intimidation tactic employed here, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what that leads to.
And, after all of this happened, stories came out of the woodwork about the various ####ty things Ben has been doing since his rookie season. Like going places in Pittsburgh and expecting stuff to be free, and being a royal ### if he didn't get it for free. Getting pissed when someone told him to wear a helmet, getting in an accident (where he had a concussion), told everyone he'd definitely wear a helmet again, and then when people spot him (constantly, btw) without a helmet still(!!!!!), he flips them off. Various drunken parties with college girls that get out of hand. Damage to places where he parties, without reparations made. Having his thugs around with him to intimidate people on a regular basis.
And, really, I kinda stop caring whether or not the guy was convicted or not. I really just don't want him on my team anymore because he is Major Douchebag with Honors. Because he has utterly killed my interest in a team I've followed for nearly two decades.
Hey, we're in the playoffs again. And I don't really care. I don't really want us to lose, but I really don't want us to win, either. I'm completely indifferent to what happens with the Steelers now.
Lots of other fans are won over by the fact that he's back, and he's playing decent. But there's still some of us that would really like a reason to like the team again.

That our system doesn't work seems like the only relevant point. Once you have that the fact that people take advantage of the system being broken is total non-news.
I get what you're saying and I have been relatively uninterested in the Steelers this season (as a long time fan that is a change). My point is that if we are going to be mad at the things these people do off the field lets focus on what's important to be mad about. If Ben is getting away with this kind of evil then we all sort of know why, and it seems much more important to focus on the root cause of that evil (the fact that we all know he could get away with it) than what a specific instance of that evil is.
Any of us could be murdered in our sleep. But most of us generally get the idea that were that to happen there would be consequences for our murderer. Take away those consequences and we shouldn't be surprised when more people end up murdered in their sleep.

Yeah, I only worry about the things that I can control.
I can control whether or not I like the guy, and whether or not I retain interest in the team. I also control whether or not I buy Steelers stuff, or tickets.
I have no control over our legal system, nor the inner workings of the NFL, and any influence I could possibly have on the way society handles celebrities, is a drop in the bucket. And that's really, really overestimating my influence.
So since I have no say in what goes on here, other than what my opinion is of the player, that's where my focus is:
I don't like him much.
And there we go.
