First off, since I'm the only person initiating threads in this forum, I'm declaring myself KING of the Country Forum. That's right I now reign over all things Country for this forum. This is my Forum and all who have posted in it so far are members of my royal court. You may petition me for your royal titles anon. For all those who have peeked at these threads but have chosen not to respond I will impose a royal tax to be collected by my posse of good ol' boys. I must warn you, every third sentence spoken by them amounts to "You shore got a pretty mouth, boy." All those who respond to these threads are exempt from the tax and have nothing to fear from a visit from my posse. Plus you'll be in line for some kind of royal title of your own.

For now I proclaim Kiwi Girl the Duchess of Kiwi, and Alien Flanders the Wizard of Oz. I'll award more titles as I've had time to consider them.

Now, down to business.

This thread is to discuss different Country artists and what you like about him or her.

I'll begin with Roger Miller. I've liked him since I was a rugrat. He wrote what I consider to be the best slacker song ever in "King of the Road". I also should have brought up "You can't rollerskate in a Buffalo Herd" in the comedy song thread. This guy was great and if I remember correctly was a bit of a mentor for the Byrds.

Roger Miller is great, his king of the Road is good as well

See why I've assigned you the title Wizard of Oz?
Though a link for "King of the Road" would have been nice.

Wait a minute, did you already have that in your signature or did you just add that?

AlienFlanders

I added it.

Actually I'm probably closer to 'prentice of Oz, (as in the Disney one) Although in games I am really good at making my team disappear.

Well for my new kingdom yer the wizard. I have to go to work in a few for overtime tonight so I'll think about other royal titles while I'm getting stroked by the players on my games. Thanks for the links.

If I could figure out how to do the 'I am just that good - Cobra' (Lleyton Hewitt tennis reference) in smilies I would.

I used to love Faith Hill. Does she count? :P

She's like country crossover or something.

Same with Shania Twain. They were actually quite good.

I like old country. The "country" now sonds like 60's rock with a twang.

I don't really pay close attention to most of the contemporary country artists (other to note how hot they look, especially Shania Twain). They seem like they're less focused on the country and more focused on fame.
I like the kind older stuff you heard on "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" or on the "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" CDs. Or like Analog Kid I like old school country. Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Willie, Waylon, Kris Kristofferson, Patsy Cline, Buck Owens. So what did you like about her? Honestly you don't strike me as someone who would be comfortable with Country Music.

Getting back to assigning my court. I'm assigning Bud Palmer to be court jester.
Velvet Guru9 will be the Earl of Omniscience as he seems to have an extensive knowledge of things relating to music.

T'chaka, I'm still working on your title.

Check out Neko Case. When she's not providing vocals for AC Newman's New Pornographers, she's a force of nature in the alt-country scene. Don't let the "alt" fool you - that's just so hipsters can tell themselves that they don't actually like hillbilly music. But you can't fool me - if I hear steel guitars and banjos and murder ballads, I'm going to call that country. Judge for yourself:

I checked out a little of her when she was in one of DTM's competitions. You might have nominated her. I'm a convert. I believe I voted for her. I don't really think she sounded very country though.

P.S. I'm still trying to think of a royal title for you too.

I guess the closest I get to new country (post 1990) is Blake Shelton and Kenny Wayne Shepherd, with some Guy Clark (who I know is old country) but I like Boats to Build (Picasso's Mandolin).

Neko Case sounded pretty Country on those links, I heard a couple of near yodels in there, not enough to get me really interested but I can wait.

Well, the links provided here did sound country but the links provided for DTM's thread sounded more alternative then anything else. Whatever, I'll be keeping an eye out for her CD's. As for Kenny Wayne Shepard, I think of him more as blues rock, carrying on in the tradition of his hero Stevie Ray Vaughn. I'm unfamiliar with those others.

Blake Shelton - Ol Red (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piZ5E_UbJ2g)

Blake Shelton - Austin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvSCDK7GdXM) Austin is like the B Sharps, great the first time round and gets less funny the more you hear it (I still like it).

Guy Clark - LA Freeway (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2H3_YHnmgA)

Thanks so much for my title Eddy! Ive changed my signature accordingly!
Hey - what song would you guys choose as your favourite country song ever?

Mine is : Lay Down Beside Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRP8gQoDNAg) by Kenny Rogers. Our friend Lurker even made it so that I could down load it on You Tube.
Not to be morbid, but this is the song that I want to be played at my funeral. Ive always liked this song, it was passed on to be my Parents and the best (and kind of surprising) thing is that my son and his friends have grown to love it too!

Glad you like your title, I was beginning to think only Alien Flanders appreciated my running gag.

Kenny Rogers does have a great voice, I'll have to admit. I remember watching a syndicated variety show he had with the First Edition around the 69-70 time frame. I was in junior high at the time. Can't remember a whole lot though.

Getting back to Roger Miller, I used to get a kick out of his appearances on the old "Daniel Boone" TV series. My stepmother had a best of album of his we used to listen to on a Hi-Fi set she owned when I was ten years old. I don't even think it was stereo. I remember Jimmy Dean appeared on the show as well. I also remember Jimmy Dean's variety show that had the first muppet. Ralph the dog, I think it was. As kids we loved to watch that show just for Ralph. My favorite song by Jimmy Dean was "Big Bad John".

We also listened to "Winchester Cathedral" on that Hi-Fi.

I just learned the secret knock to get into this thread. Nobody else is going to find out I like country, right? Ok then. My parents loved their country/folk music so the house was filled with a lot of Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Charley Pride, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, John Denver, Neil Diamond and many others I forget at the moment. I think the slower pace of the songs makes them a bit easier to get into & become a part of. Everyone can get something from this music but unfortunate that some can't or don't want to. IMO Country music lyrics are quite quotable (I love Johnny's version of Cotton Fields), everybody knows the classics and (at least locally) you'll still get "The Gambler" and others played between the latest pop hits at the local pub's dancefloor.

A more contemporary artist that I discovered while I was in Saudi Arabia in '96 is Chris LeDoux. There wasn't much to do over there as it was right after the Khobar Towers bombing and we weren't allowed to go off the base unless you had official business. Every Wednesday was country music night. They'd play an excellent cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Tougher then the Rest" by Chris nicely countryed up. So I decided to look into him a little closer and discovered he was a huge rodeo star who happened to do Country music on the side. His music was generally always upbeat and he liked to have fun. Sadly he succumbed to liver cancer in 2004. I've always avoided Garth Brooks for some reason but I may have to pay him some attention after learning how he tried to help Chris make it through that.

Garth Brooks doesnt do very much for me either Eddy! Hey Eddy does Lurker get a Country title? - then I can send a general email around his work place advising everyone he works with that, in the words of John Denver (slightly changed) "My God, hes a country boy!!"

How long were you in the military Eddy? (At least Im assuming you were....)

I've been a little lax in assigning titles to people, though I made Bud Palmer the court jester and he hasn't reacted to it. I also made Velvetguru9 the Earl of Omniscience and he didn't react to that. I gave it to him because he seems to have a fountain of knowledge about the subject of music. Maybe I should just tone it down to the Earl of Information. I'm trying to think of titles that seem clever. I do need some Knights for my roundtable. Between you and me I'm a little proud of the title I gave your son. By the way, he says he likes it.
I spent twenty years tolerating military life before I retired, which is a bit of a feat because I really wasn't the type of person who was meant to be in the military. I'm not much of a brownnose and that's an art form in there. Let's just say there were a lot of people who didn't like my presence there. It was a little fun before I became trapped stateside. That's the price I had to pay when I decided to have a family.

This may sound odd, but the reality is I'm not very familiar with Garth Brooks' work. I tend to prefer to listen to edgier country as opposed to mainstream country. Garth Brooks being so huge, I figured I'd prefer to avoid his music and I seem to have done a pretty good job of it.

I am a much bigger fan of the old style Country than the newer stuff, but I do like the Dixie Chicks and Tim Mcgraw and and I am a sucker forcountry ballads like Strawberry Wine and I'm gonna Love you forever.

Most of the real country I know you guys will also know so i am going to post something a little odd. This is Buck 65 he is the Johnny Cash of Canadian Maritimes Hip Hop (which is a very limited genre to say the least) give him a listen, he isn't really country per se but I really think he captures the feeling of the genre.

Check "em all out, especially my Gram Parsons and Emmylou threads. I tend toward the edgier country or stuff on the fringes that don't really make it to the standard country music stations. I intend to start threads devoted solely to Hank Williams and Johnny Cash eventually but if you beat me to it I won't mind.

Ya know Lurker, if I had a little more information from you in your profile I might be able to think about a title that fits you. I know you're from New Zealand and you're about sixteen years younger then me. Not a lot to work with there especially, since KiwiGirl has a lock on all things Kiwi. Heck DTM gets to be the Duke of Kiwi simply because of association and he apparently hates country. Well I know you have a lot of sheep in your country but I don't want to burden you with a title that reflects that.
I need more Knights. I hope you like Sean Connery cause I'm gonna make you my Green Knight. New Zealand seems like a pretty healthy country environmentally, (If you overlook that hole in the ozone) so I'm gonna make you the Green Knight. The only thing you gotta do is accept. Get back with me.

What? No Link? Okay good deal, now I have a Green Knight to compliment my Black Knight.

Let Me inventory my court:

1. I have a Duchess of Kiwi who we haven't heard from for a while.

2. A Duke who we'll probably never hear from. (He only gets to be the Duke because he's married to the Duchess)

3.A Dukester who's the son of the Duke and Duchess and hasn't been heard from in a while. (I may have to send my Knights out to find these people)

4. A Wizard (of Oz) who just might have to be additionally dubbed the hardest working wizard in the Realms.

5. An Earl of Omniscience

6. A Court Jester (Who needs to get back here and do some jestering.)

7. A Count Canuck

8. A Marquis De Nordique

9. A Black Knight

!0. A Green Knight

I still need to see if Hail Eris will accept his title and I need to think up something for Pashmina (though I doubt he'll post around here again. Country's probably not his thing.)

Wow! Yeah I do. Both of those songs were great! I knew Leann did something before "How Do I Live", but that blew me away.

And Patsy Cline (who i'd never heard) was excellent. Really great voice, and the style of the song (both actually) were great.

readyeddy?
10/13/2007, 08:00
Well, both songs were written by the same man. He meant Blue to be a Patsy Cline song but Patsy Cline died tragically in a plane crash before she could record it. he had to wait for Leann Rimes before he found someone he was comfortable with performing that song.

If you want me to come up with a royal title I need you to give me something I can work with. Most of the others had something that related to their lives somehow. Alien Flanders is Australian so he gets to be the Wizard of Oz for example.

It occurs to me that I have not offered you a position in my court. I have to think about your court title a bit. I see your from New York so I have to ask "DO YOU GET YOUR SALSA FROM NEW YORK CITY? I'm thinkin' you don't, but if you do it really doesn't matter because anybody who posts on the here "Country threads are offered a position in the court. I would have gotten to you earlier but I had to cope with a setback or two including my hard drive suffering a premature death. So here's the deal; I still need a Baron and it occurs to me I need a Lord. Plus I need more Knights. I could use a little more information about you because if it"s possible I'd like to give you as cool a Country Court title as I can think up. Don't get your expectations too high though, because my originality does have it's limitations. I'm proudest of naming my Australian member the Wizard of Oz and my Canadian member Count Canuck. I don't believe anybody has been called Count Canuck before. Anyway I'll attempt to wrack my brain on this issue and you could help me out considerably by giving me something to work with.

Townes was awesome. Check the "Used" section of your local FYE or other mall store; you can usually find a couple of his CDs for cheap.

They've also reissued a lot of his work as "double-album CDs": two albums on a single CD. I have a stack of them. The guy was simply amazing -- one of those songwriters you can go back to over and over and always hear some new lyrical nuance you missed before.

And, for my money, "Pancho and Lefty" is the greatest "story song" ever. That was the song that turned me from a hardcore rock'n'roller into a country fan, because it's not what the song says -- it what it doesn't say that really sinks the hook in you.

I've bought two Townes Van Zandt CDs since I've posted. At My Window and Rear View Mirror. I've discovered the stores are putting him under folk which they are also doing to Gillian Welch.

So there will be more Townes Van Zandt in my future. Interesting how so many people consider him to be the apple to Bob Dylan's orange.

Did you see the video clip for Pancho & Lefty by Willie and Merle? Townes has a role in it as a Federale.

I just watched the vid and noticed a ton of interesting stuff. Some "Pancho & Lefty" trivia for you that I noticed in the vid:

1) The first face you see in the second scene (in the Mexican cantina) is indeed Townes van Zandt. He appears in numerous scenes in the vid; his last appearance is as the accoustic guitar player in the final scene (in the present-day diner).

2) The photo in Pancho's pocke####ch is an actual picture of young Willie Nelson (I've seen it in one of his books); I don't remember whether the woman is his mother or grandmother.

3) The photo of Pancho on the reward poster is Willie's photo from the cover of Wanted! The Outlaws, the first platinum-selling album in country music history (1976, seven years prior to this vid).

4) The diner patrons in the final scene are members of Willie's "Family Band", including legendary harp player Mickey Raphael (the guy with the "honky fro" next to the window).

There's probably more, but that's all I spotted on the first viewing. :)

I like Coe, but his stuff's kind of hit or miss; in general, any particular one of his albums'll either totally blow you away or leave you wondering why you spent the money. Also, usually Coe's not for the fainthearted; the words "political correctness" don't exist in his vocabulary. ;)
