Hmmmm, not sure we should be taking songs as OHWs from lead singers of very well known groups (Journey and Styx) who went off and did the solo thing for a bit (course thats just me).

Which actually Til Tuesday (above) could be included in, as Aimee Mann has had a few well known tracks alone, does that mean her time with Til Tuesday and their one big song (Voices Carry) should be allowed?

That would also eliminate Duran Duran side projects -- Arcadia (Election Day) and John Taylor (I Do What I Do).

DTM
09/28/2007, 23:07
I personally wouldnt mind it, not saying I dont like any of those songs, just that Im not sure I qualify such songs OHWs when their solo artists were from bands that had several other big hits themselves. (but again, thats just me, Ill of course go with whatever the majority decides)

Frontman
09/28/2007, 23:16
Oh, you can go crazy with it.

Technically, if you consider a "hit" something that only hits #1, then bands like Styx, The Grateful Dead, and Santana would be "one hit" wonders.

But I just suggested them as they got only one or two songs via their solo careers. DeYoung in my mind is a hell of a song writer; and one of the nicest guys I've ever bugged for an autograph.

DTM
09/28/2007, 23:52
Oh, I think if we were limiting our OHWs to ones that actually made it to #1 on the charts, wed have a nice little 8 song TOC in the end. :p

That would drop The Lone Ranger - Quantum Jump as well, Rupert Hine built bands, released a couple of albums, then moved on.

Did we determine that Stealer's Wheel had other hits besides "Stuck In the Middle With You"?

From Wikipedia
In 1973/1974 the two singles "Everything Will Turn Out Fine" and "Star" would also reach the top 30 of both the UK and US charts.

I think we are taking top30 US as a general cutoff (of course that might knock a few out that became FM and other hits later).

I always lump that one in the same barrel as Focus.

Just thought I'd comment on Carl Perkins from a few posts up.
I read Johnny Cash's autobiog on holiday a month ago and Johnny and Carl Perkins were Sun Stablemates and good friends. Carl Perkins, at least according to the Man in Black, is one of Rock n Roll's great Tragedies.

On March 21, 1956, as the song neared its peak on the charts, Perkins was involved in a serious automobile accident while on the way to New York City to appear on the nationally broadcast Perry Como Show. He suffered a fractured skull and broken shoulder in the crash; brother Jay Perkins fractured his neck (he died in 1958). [4] Perkins could only watch as his friend, Elvis Presley, also had success with a cover version of "Blue Suede Shoes", which was a follow-up to Presley's first hit, "Heartbreak Hotel". Presley's version became far more famous than the original, although it only reached #20 on the Best Sellers chart

I have to post this before I forget what I am seeing.
Maybe these have been corrected in a later post, but there are two songs given the incorrect band.

Afternoon Delight was done by the Starland vocal band (not Starlight).
The Night Chicago Died was done by Paper Lace (not cup).

Now, I noticed Eddy Grant was given credit only for Electric Avenue, but he also did Romancing the Stone, which may not have been a big hit, but it was the title theme of a popular film, so that couldn't have hurt it's sales.

I would also like to throw out a few, again, hoping that they aren't mentioned between when I decided to post and wherever this shows up.
Maybe in some parts of the country, or overseas in one case in particular, these bands fared better than they did in mine, so I will happily stand corrected if anyone can counter these.

Mama let him play by Doucette (may have had a second hit in Canada)

Tragedy by Arcangel (may have been pretty big in Japan)

Rock and Roll Dreams Come Through by Jim Steinman (later covered by Meatloaf when the two reunited)

I'm Leaving by Taxxi (they had some moderate success, and I am a fan, but I don't know if any other song qualified as a legitimate hit)

The Look in Your Eye by the Hughes Thrall Band

Band of Gold by Freida Payne (probably a spelling error)

There's Something Going On by Frida (formerly of ABBA, with Phil Collins on drums, if anyone cares :) )

Why Me by Planet P (Power Tools is the only other song of theirs that I can think may qualify as a hit)

I Could Be Good For You by 707

Sorry, but I have no links of any sort, but some of these can be heard at Amazon, at least in part, I'm sure.

I saw this guy in concert in the Seventies. He made the mistake of being the opener for Blue Oyster Cult. The only time they weren't booing him or flipping him off was when he performed this song, which I think he played earlier then he meant to because the crowd was so hostile. The BOC members seemed a little nervous about it when they came to the stage also. It was just a poor coupling for music acts I'd say.

I don't have any numbers, but Magic Power by Triumph was a pretty big hit, I thought, and they got plenty of airplay between their "Just a Game", "Allied Forces", and "Never Surrender" albums, with "Thunder Seven" enjoying at least moderate success before "The Sport of Kings", which contained Somebody's Out There, came out. I figure they have to have had a hit.

I can't speak for Tiffany because I'm completely unfamiliar with her (I spent 80% of the Eighties overseas). I was surprised about Sinead O'Conner myself (as I was about Kate Bush) but I guess she shot her chances for another hit down when she tore up that picture. I bought her best of and she definitely had a lot of good songs.

Oh and Alien Flanders, did you deliberately leave my complaint about the excessively egotistical one on your list? If so, I'm glad you agree.

P.S. Do you know how hard it is to come up with excuses to rep when you have people like Alien Flanders who deserve rep every single time they post?

I thought I had edited it off, although I am of the same opinion.

I am basing the list vaguely on the US Top30, so Slade - Run Runaway could slip on.

With Sinead it might come down to how many have heard/remember her version of the song.

I dob't think you can count Kate Bush at all.

How about Jennifer Rush - The Power of Love

Actually I don't think I can really comment further on this as there are loads of people on the list who had more than one hit in the UK.

You know, in my opinion what goes on in the UK is at least as important as what goes on in the U.S. Perhaps you should bring up the ones you feel are suspect and your reasons why. I thought about bringing up "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" by Status Quo but I thought they had several U.K. hits. I always felt it was a matter of the songs overall popularity, not how they charted somewhere. "Stairway to Heaven" is a huge hit and it never charted anywhere.

Though they did have hit singles after this in Sweden and Brazil (which is weird) they never had another single that cracked the top ten or even came close to the success of MMM Bop in the US.

A couple that shouldn't be on the list.

Tiffany

Could'vbe Been was number one in the US and I Saw Him Standing There reached number 6 on the US charts. so she is definitely out.

Toad The wet Sprocket

All I Want was actually a more successfull single than Walk The Ocean making it up to 15 on the charts as opposed to 18.

Revolving Door (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jo1_YWb0Mws&mode=related&search=)
Drowning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7WlstnPwZ9g&mode=related&search=) (one of my all time favorite songs period)

The discussion is getting long so I hope these aren't retreds but:

Come Away With Me - Nora Jones (I don't think anything else she has released has cracked the Top 20.... unless you start looking at Adult Contemporary).

I'm Otta Love - Anastacia - everything else has only hit on the dance charts I believe.

And has nobody mentioned Rubin Studdard or Clay Aikin.... I think both of them shot their wade with their first release after AI2 and have slowly faded into the background.

That's all right Shel, stick around. There are songs of enormous popularity that have never been on the charts. I keep trotting Stairway to Heaven out as an example. Some songs are FM hits, but a hit is still a hit.

10/05/2007, 13:38
Yes, I agree, charts per se dont have much to do with being a OHW as it does recognition or popularity of the songs themselves. Lord knows Pop Goes The World wasnt as big a hit as Safety Dance for Men Without Hats, but it was still a popular song which most of us known, hence knocking Safety Dance and Men Without Hats out of the OHW running.

As for as Im Outta Love from Anastasia, Ive heard of several more of her songs (as in getting nice airplay), and she even has a greatest hits album (something a OHW really wouldnt have).

That's true. But that is why I nominated Nora Jones. I know she has had something recently on the readio but I couldn't name it to save my life. And I think that is the true definition of a one-hit wonder... and the double-edge sword.

Think about it.... what were the chances that Kelly Clarkson's 3rd ablum even come close to the success she had with her sophomore effort.

Besides being oh so hot to look at, the only song I recognize from CrazyTown is Butterfly. Not that there other stuff wasn't as good, but making a hit has so much to do with timing, luck and opportunity, that skill (or looks) alone can't cut it in the recording business.

Hey, we had two Scissor Sisters tracks at mine. Of course, the ceremony took place at a restaurant that was chosen for its proximity to a music school, the officiant was the guy who runs the bar inside that school, the "readings" were Shel Silverstein poems, and the closest we came to any kind of religious content was a benediction to Superman. So, err, I guess there's something to be said for non-traditional weddings.

I hate being the guy who show's up and argues an inclusion of disinclusion once in a while. But shouldn't the OHW label pertain to how an act or artist is marketed? For example, Jimmy Hendrix with the Experience should count for Jimi alone and the Experience, but their hits shouldn't count against any solo Experience member.

One rule please!
Otherwise remove Dennis DeYoung (Styx) and Steve Perry (Journey)

and is the original poster sure about Rock & Roll Dreams Come Through? I can't recollect any version except Meatloaf's vocals as a hit.

Well if you delete Steve Perry and Dennis DeYoung off the list you should delete the others. Personally I think they weren't representing the groups they were in when they did their solo efforts and they've all had plenty of time to create new solo hits if they were inclined to.
In Frida's case the musical style was even radically different then the parent group.

Didnt Shirley Bassey sing another well known James Bond song?I'll check, but I don't think anybody was a repeater for Bond songs.

Color me stupid! Turns out she did three! The others apparently weren't hits but they were popular. By my criteria that probably disqualifies her.

They were outside US Top30 but we still have 260 if we drop her.

Well, as much as I would like to see her presence; those other songs are smokin', as all Bond songs are, so considering others we've dropped I reluctantly feel she should be disqualified.

With the ambigious nature of the OHW status in this thread (no defined qualification) then it's hard to say, but Janis scored her only Top 40 hit at #1 on March 20, 1971 with Me And Bobby McGee. She just missed the 40 position with Kozmic Blues #42, Cry Baby #42, Get It While You Can #78 and Down On Me At #91; and three were after her death.

An artist's songs don't necessarily have to have charted, they just need to be popular. If they get plenty of FM airplay it's popular. Janis Joplin has several of those.

After reading through this entire thread, I found I had no songs to add. However, I do have a few to dispute.

Dreek & the Dominos had a second hit with "Bell Bottom Blues" (though not quite at the same level as "Layla"), Arlo Guthrie had "Alice's Restaraunt Massacree", which I'm sure quite a few people have heard (they play the entiry 14+ minutes of the song on our local classic rock station at noon every Thanksgiving), and Vitamin C actually had a hit with "Smile" before "Graduation (Friends Forever)", which I remember as I was in middle school when both songs were hits.

Well, in defense of the late great Tommy Bolin; the LP "Private Eyes" was released in 1976, the same year he passed away. Clapton covered "Cocaine" in 1978.

My favourite one hit wonder is: Come on Eileen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z9bPrUark4)by Dexys Midnight Runners.

The real shame for poor DMR is that they tried so hard to get away from the "curse" of the Too-Rye-Ay album - probably the worst of their releases despite the hit song - with Don't Stand Me Down which is a great piece of work and art. Unfortunately, they were too well remembered as the "Come on Eileen" band and that's how they stayed. :(

One Hit Wonder Embarrassing Admission Time: I love the song "Lovefool" by the Cardigans but it took me forever to track down a copy of it because at first...uhm...I thought it was "No Doubt" singing it. :o (Don't you love how radio stations decided they didn't need to tell you the name of a song or the person/group singing it?)

You'd do yourself a favor by picking up some of their other stuff. Their 2003 release Long Gone Before Midnight shows definite maturity, and the lead track is probably one of their songs. Check out "Communication" here. (http://beta.youku.com/v_show/id_cf00XMjM1Njc5Ng==.html)

The '80s were a golden age for actors-turned-singers. None of the J-Lo or Mandy Moore nonsense you see today. We had titans of the small and silver screen. We had Rick Springfield, Frank Stallone, Tom Wopat, the entire cast of Miami Vice (with the possible exception of Edward James Olmos). We had Chuck Norris singing the theme to "Walker, Texas Ranger" and Lee Majors crooning over a bunch of great stock footage at the beginning of "The Fall Guy." We had action stars who decided to pick up a microphone instead of a gun. Patrick Swayze spent an afternoon (presumably when he wasn't busy feathering his hair, tearing out someone's throat, or blowing up Russians) recording "She's Like the Wind." Bruce Willis took time out from the hectic shooting of Hudson Hawk to give us The Return of Bruno. These were sacrifices - brave sacrifices - made by the men who won the Cold War (on a pop cultural front, anyway). These men could have been engaging in steamy PG-rated daytime soap opera lovin' or jumping canals in the General Lee. Instead, they gave us soulful ballads and pop masterpieces - some of which even work outside of a completely ironic frame of reference. These men are less "one-hit wonders" and more "wonders - who happened to have one hit." If only Kurt Russell had released an album in those days...

Speaking of which...."Don't Give Up On Us, Baby." by David Soul

Not that she was a one hit wonder but it took me at least twenty years to track down a copy of We Must believe in Magic by Crystal Gayle, I had recorded it off the radio and never heard it again, I still have the tape of it. The only sad thing is her rerecording of it is not as great as the original.

With all the press Miley Cyrus is getting lately (for Hannah Montana and other things), let's remember her dad, Billy Ray, was a "one hit wonder" with Achy Breaky Heart. It's interesting because, as a one hit wonder, the song is just as infamous as it is famous, as well known for being hated as it is for being liked. Kind of the country equivalent of Kung Fu Fighting.
