Here's the thread where you can discuss those one hit wonders. The songs you love, the ones you hate, The ones you're trying to remember; just who the heck did that song anyway?

I'll start with a couple I like:

"Good Time Charlie's Got the Blues" by Danny O'Keefe.
I have always loved this song. I bought a Steve Goodman album back in the mid Seventies that had a cover of this song but somebody borrowed it permanently and I never was able to replace it. I finally found a Seventies collection that carried the danny O'Keefe original. Deeply melancholy but a very good song.

"Keep Your Hands To Yourself" by the Georgia Satellites
This song was released a few months before I returned to the U.S. from England, so I hadn't heard it very much but I soon found out that the local bars in my hometown had heard it enough to be a little sick of it. So I caught a lot of hell for playing it all the time on the jukebox.
It's infectious fun though and ranks with "Takin' Care of Business" as a good bar song any band could play.

I hate to admit that the Georgia Satellites are practically a one-hit wonder. You should check out "Let It Rock" if you liked "Keep Your Hands To Yourself", it's awesome.

I personally like "That Thing You Do" by the Oneders. ;)

Wow, this would be an excellent place to discuss One Hit Wonders for a possible future Rock Wars TOC. Reddy, you mind if I ask all of our RW peeps to chime in and discuss such songs (in general and for the TOC)?

I'll tell you why I love this song. The beginning of the song starts out about Johnnie Ray. My mom told me a story about being 17 and living in New York (in the Bronx) back in the 50s (The part before I was born :nervous:) and how she was so crazy in love with Johnnie Ray and would do just about anything to meet him. Well, he was supposed to be doing a show in the area and she somehow found out what hotel he was gonna be staying at and then somehow snuck up to his floor and slept outside his room. She finally met him and she says all she did was get an autograph:cheeky: ...Yeah, right:o .

Here's some more one hit wonders I found in My Mp3 player, including:

Electric Avenue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtPk5IUbdH0)- Eddy Grant
Black velvet (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ut09zkRoG0g)- Alannah Myles?
Lemon tree (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCDIt50hRDs)- Fools Garden
More than words (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kt7L4X4li_k)- Extreme
Don't worry, be happy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IERzx5Spic&mode=related&search=)- Bobby McFerrin (Awesome music vid :)) (seems to cheer me up)

And forgive my age here but what about 'For What Its Worth' by Buffalo Springfield? Or 'At Seventeen' by Janis Ian I'm not too sure how many hits they've had?
Buffalo Springfield had Bluebird and Mr. Soul. One of those had to be a hit.
Janis Ian had a song called Societys child that I'm pretty sure was a hit.

Now for some ROCK AND ROLL TRIVIA one of the artists you mentioned as a one hit wonder can actually make this list twice. NAME THE ARTIST AND SONG.

I hate to admit that the Georgia Satellites are practically a one-hit wonder. You should check out "Let It Rock" if you liked "Keep Your Hands To Yourself", it's awesome.

I personally like "That Thing You Do" by the Oneders. ;)
If you like the Satellites, check out Dain Baird's solo rock hit without the rest of the Satellites: Dan Baird - I Love You Period (You Love Me Question Mark)

My favourite one hit wonder is: Come on Eileen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7z9bPrUark4)by Dexys Midnight Runners.
And because of exposure to this video at a young and impressionable age, I am cursed to forever be an all-day sucker for short-haired girls in overalls. It's a relatively small population, I'll grant you, but thankfully my wife is an occasional member of it. I'll add the following classics to the list:

Sly Fox - "Let's Go All the Way" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsiPtvfdvDY) Just makes me think of Miami Vice for some reason. Don't think they ever featured it on the show, but there's something very "blazer with the sleeves rolled up" about this song.

Slade - "Run Runaway" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHoPYLQvnQM) This one's fun because many people don't even realize is a one-hit wonder - it's so easy to just assume that it's being performed by Big Country on some kind of effects pedal bender. Of course, Slade was much bigger in the UK than in the States, and Yanks probably know them best for "Come on Feel the Noise" - a song they wrote and originally performed, but which was made famous by Quiet Riot.

Baltimora - "Tarzan Boy" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r0n9Dv6XnY) Much to my chagrin, these days this song is better known as a commercial jingle for Listerine. But watch the video - the outfit and dance moves (both of which manage to make Marc Almond look positively heterosexual by comparison), the hilarious video production (you get a clinic on the various "wipes" at the editor's disposal), and most of all, a hairdo that you could set your watch by. Provided you wanted to set your watch to 1986.

"Funky Cold Medina" isn't a one-hit wonder. You can't forget "Wild Thing."

"Tubthumping" by Chumbawumba (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lJIjdajBww) They knew it, too. The yelly guy wore a "One Hit Wonder" t-shirt on Leno or something.

Sex and Candy by Marcy Playground (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKl_7zK3fbI)

I'm not even sure if this was a hit, but Precious Little by Eleanor McEvoy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ybGNMbIrJw)

And I always forget this one from the late 80s. I Don't Wanna Fall In Love by Jane Child (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjyGJE21ijE)

She Blinded Me With Science by Thomas Dolby (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2IlHgbOWj4o)

Winchester Cathedral? I don't think I've heard that since I was ten years old. There seems to be something wrong with the Danny O'Keefe link from the YouTube side of things. it played about halfway and then froze up.

Oh, were not going to be doing the actual nomminating for quite some time now, Id just like this to be a place (again, with your permission) for us all to discuss one hit wonders, comment on whether we feel others picks do or dont fit this category, and make an overall list (as Big as we can get) to pick from when nominations for that particular RW takes place. So hopefully someone can compile a list here as we go (links do not need to be attached), and we can all add to and comment on what we have so that when the actual nominations do come, we dont have everyone going, that doesnt fit, I know other songs from them, etc.

I must concede that Modern English qualifies with their megahit "I Melt with You." (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoD3BUhZ-Sk) This saddens me, as their debut album, Mesh and Lace, is a wonderfully gothy shoegazer number, and it was far more typical of their body of work than the poppy dance hit that made them famous.

Babys Got Back (I Like Big Butts) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybfLRFacF-c) - Sir Mixalot

Does it count if their one hit is a cover song?

Then I'd nominate Pseudo Echo's cover of "Funkytown."

And there's always "Take On Me" by A-Ha.

I'd argue that their other single - "The Sun Always Shines on TV" - is actually a better song. It just didn't have a legendary video to support it.

Soft Cell: Tainted Love (http://youtube.com/watch?v=oEh5pWjcWCg)
"Tainted Love" is certainly their biggest performer on the charts, but "Sex Dwarf" was a monster club hit.

I would have nominated Bow Wow Wow for their song "I Want Candy," (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNHcaIJETZo) but they also scored a minor hit with the follow up, "Louis Quatorze." For music history buffs, this flash-in-the-pan pop act was masterminded by Malcolm McLaren, the man responsible for the Sex Pistols. Yeah, it's one of the reasons why I don't give McLaren and his mohawked Monkees anywhere near the credit that others do when discussing the foundations of punk.

For Tone Loc Wild Thing was just as big a hit as Funky Cold Medina, and even if Jump On It didn't play at every sporting event in North America, Sir Mix-A-Lot would be far from a one-hit wonder.

Ah yes, of course, Wild Thing from Tone Loc I know full well (you can take Funky Cold Medina off the list AF). Though I didnt know Sir Mix Alot did anything big besides I Like Big Butts.

Sorry to play the one hit wonder police here but Devo are nowhere near one-hit wonders. The Girl U Want, Jocko Homo, Satisfaction, these guys are pioneers.

I agree on Devo, though by name I have no idea about those songs. :) They at least did Working On A Coal Mine, which should be enough to take them off this list.

I hate to be so myopic in this but is there any kind of criteria that is in use for the determination of "one hit wonders."

While most of us in the USA would not be aware of the success of some artists we woudl consider OHW in the UK or other countries.

This should be decided before we move on to the main event.

I have to kibosh a few of these suggestions:

Tom Cochrane has a huge hit with Big League (http://youtube.com/watch?v=eoDDnOUKDQI) as well as two or three number one hits in Canada.

Unfortunately MMM MMm MMM was not the Crash Test Dummies only hit see the Superman Song (http://youtube.com/watch?v=bFEKRVJF0mM) Amongst others.

Here is the Sir Mix A-Lot video for Jump On It (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Cm0HrQmA6B4) which was a huge hit in certain parts of the states and plays far to often at sporting events.

Agreed, which is why for the OHW TOC we would be focusing more on those songs that were as such in America primiarily (as a nice majority of those who participate in Rock Wars are American or live in America) Lord knows a group that may have had a one hit wonder in the USA may have had tons of other hits in Europe, though for the ease of choosing songs for this list, well focus more on the songs that were OHWs primarily in the USA (least for the Rock Wars OHW TOC, anyway).

Hmmm, a band from the U.S. called the Long Ryders had a hit in the Eighties in the U.K. called "Looking for Lewis and Clark". They never had a hit in the U.S. If I hadn't been in England at the right time I might never have heard of them. I'm glad I did as they were hugely influenced by one of my musical heroes, Gram Parsons.
Since the U.K. has such a huge influence on music in general, shouldn't an exception be made for them? Just asking?

Well, Im not setting a hard and fast ruling on this as yet, not by myself (as always with my TOCs, I like to have as much member feedback as possible), so quite possibly sure on your question. I just feel that there were a few songs already on this list that were classic OHWs that may have been removed because they had smaller hits not in America. Im sure we can just carry on as normal, and work out the details of it all as we go. I just feel that such a list would be easier to compile if we focused on one specific region or area, which in this case would be where much of the RW members are and happened to be one of the hardest places on earth to have a musical hit.

Since we are being USA-centric with this list, I think a "hit" should be any song that made the top Ten. If a band/artist only had one song make the top 10, then they would be considered a one-hit wonder?

Other definitions out there?

DTM
09/15/2007, 15:05
Heck, Im using the term "hit" in this case as I song I personally have heard of before (not from actually owning said album, but being played often on the radio). Ive seen people here knock certain artists off with other "hits" theyve done, but I myself have Never heard of them before. In those instances, for me personally alone, Id still count them as OHWs.

Example: theanalogkid tells me Eddie Murphy had hits with another song, though I only know him from Party All The Time. To me, PATT is still a one hit wonder. Same with Ray Parker Jr, who I only really know from Ghostbusters, and earlier with Madness and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. I only know them from their one big song, though of course they will have others (sometimes whole albums, with videos), though if Ive never ever heard them before, it doesnt make them less a OHW to me.

Which is probably why its best to mark or seperate those that are in question, keeping them on the list, and asking for them to be further discussed, asking for other peoples opinions on whether they have ever heard of any other songs from such artists before or not. Majority rules could decide in that case whether someone is a OHW or not.

readyeddy?
09/15/2007, 16:01
I think a hit should be based on overall popularity of the songs. There are a lot of great songs that made a lot of FM playlists that never went near anybody's top 40 list. For instance "Stairway to Heaven" was never anywhere near Casey Kasem but it's a bigger song then nearly everything Casey Kasem ever dedicated to someone. I also think sticking with top ten only, shuts too many good songs out. it's supposed to be "One Hit Wonders" not "One Hit Wonders that made the top ten".

Two HcRealmers and Wikipedia say Eddie is no OHW

As a solo artist, Murphy had two hit singles, "Party All the Time" (which was produced by Rick James) and "Put Your Mouth on Me" in the 1980s. "Party All the Time" was featured on Murphy's 1985 debut album How Could It Be, which also included a minor follow-up R&B hit in the the title track, a duet with vocalist Crystal Blake. This track was written by Rusty Hamilton and was produced by Stevie Wonder's cousin Aquil Fudge after a brief falling out and bet with Rick James. In 2004, VH-1 and Blender magazine voted "Party All the Time" number seven among the "50 Worst Songs of All-Time." Sharam used a sample of Murphy's Party All The Time for the UK #8 hit PATT (Party All The Time) in 2006.

The '80s were a golden age for actors-turned-singers. None of the J-Lo or Mandy Moore nonsense you see today. We had titans of the small and silver screen. We had Rick Springfield, Frank Stallone, Tom Wopat, the entire cast of Miami Vice (with the possible exception of Edward James Olmos). We had Chuck Norris singing the theme to "Walker, Texas Ranger" and Lee Majors crooning over a bunch of great stock footage at the beginning of "The Fall Guy." We had action stars who decided to pick up a microphone instead of a gun. Patrick Swayze spent an afternoon (presumably when he wasn't busy feathering his hair, tearing out someone's throat, or blowing up Russians) recording "She's Like the Wind." Bruce Willis took time out from the hectic shooting of Hudson Hawk to give us The Return of Bruno. These were sacrifices - brave sacrifices - made by the men who won the Cold War (on a pop cultural front, anyway). These men could have been engaging in steamy PG-rated daytime soap opera lovin' or jumping canals in the General Lee. Instead, they gave us soulful ballads and pop masterpieces - some of which even work outside of a completely ironic frame of reference. These men are less "one-hit wonders" and more "wonders - who happened to have one hit." If only Kurt Russell had released an album in those days...

Vitamin C - the graduation Song (friends forever) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHGkvBr6ZlU)

Whigfield - Saturday Night (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcmBaRAj7FU)

Dishwalla - Counting Blue Cars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lahQCb2NZz0)

Natalie Imbruglia - Torn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nHKKFf4EDlM)

Hanson - MMM Bop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9YAKrgqtVw)

I was actually thinking Mmmm Bop as well, though I thought Hanson had at least one more hit, no?

What about these two songs that were OHW for THIS duo pairing, even though they are megastars otherwise. Samples:

Easy Lover: Phil Collins/Philip Bailey
Ebony and Ivory: Paul McCartney/ Stevie Wonder

Thats actually a good question, what about duets from very famous musical artists.

Personally, and not to knock down your excellent selections TAK, I would say no, as in such cases these artists all have numerous big name hits, so putting them together as a duet to me wouldnt make their one time collaboration a OHW (though you have stumbled onto another RW TOC I was thinking of tackling there). :)

I thought as much. It is not like we don't have enough selections already.

I really think for purposes of labelling that Who's Johnny is El Debarge's only hit. Reason: El Debarge is a person (solo) whereas Debarge with Rhythem of the Night is a group. Even VH1's OHW would keep this distinction.

Well I've been pumping out links to nearly all my candidates, I believe I have to fix a few. I wish I knew how to do a youtube site. I'd be a monster. I really need to take some computer classes so I'd know all this esoteric stuff and do it the easy way to boot. My wife definitely gives me the computer widow ####. Here's another candidate: Billy Thorpe with "Children of the Sun", an FM staple and a song I should post a link for on my Prog rock thread. Later you'll see this edited with a link.

I wish I could give you a better link for the Chuck Francour song. If I knew my computer better I could create it myself as I have a bootleg CD with that song on it. It's a great song and if more people showered attention to the song, whatever became of the artist might no longer be a mystery. The song's unusually urban for me I'll admit; but hey, I've got to go to town sometimes.

Do you have them seperated in 3 groups for any particular reason?

Nope, I just needed to easily locate Iron Butterfly and Mike Oldfield.

Are we sticking with strictly Youtube links here? Because I can give a link for My Space that allows you to listen to Mind Bender immediately. also I gave A link earlier for Movin On by Missouri which isn't a youtube link either.

My mistake, you may get Mind Bender or one of three other songs but you can select Mind Bender and listen to it.

I dont think it matters what link is used, just as long as theres one there really. Of course, we certainly dont have to set up links now, as with the way YT is lately, who knows if theyll be around come Jan. when the TOC actually comes up (though I may do nominations before I leave, and links would be helpful for those as well).

Well I'm going to try to make sure I provide links for any I think of so people who want to can see what I'm talking about. I heard our buddy Prince is trying to make problems for You Tube. You can always count on that pretentious egomaniac. He should concentrate on creating another symbol he could change his name to.

Wow 104 linked there, 20 more and we can just start this thing up, it would be awesome to have a whole bunch of songs that really nobody wanted nominated in a tournament.

here's one of the links you were missing AF (the video is really weird but the song is all there)

Turn the beat around (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKQqyqBCNi0) - Vicki Sue Robinson

P.S. The big list is missing MMM BOp (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKQqyqBCNi0)

We actually have 218, plus a couple of extras (including Mmmbop) that might fall on the list.

How about Eye of the Tiger (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uELMzJQSKmU) - Survivor.

The Search is Over, High on You, and Burning Heart also got a TON of 80's airplay, so reluctantly we should remove them from the list.

Snoopy vs the Red Baron - Royal Guardsmen

However, with the Christmas version of this song, would they no longer qualify as a one hit wonder?

Oh yes, I agree 100%. Didnt see Survivor on the list, and while Eye Of The Tiger is probably their biggest hit, they definately have other well known to popular songs too.
