View Full Version : Talisman The Board Game

I just saw an ad last night that at long last, Talisman, one of the best board games ever was coming back into print. I'm seriously psyched about that. Looks like it's going to stay pretty close to the original (rather than the weird 3rd edition game that Games Workshop put out later that looked like it was trying to tie it in with Warhammer).
I'm looking forward to getting my own copy at last (always had played with friends' copies.)
Any other Talisman fans out there?

I am a Talisman fan as well. All the supplements were cool as well. The City, the Dungeon, etc.
The Prophetess is unbalanced though.

I've never played Talisman so far, but as far as I've read the fans of the game seem to be extremely enthusiastic about the re-release.
Does anybody know when the general release will be?
They specifically mention on their website (http://www.blackindustries.com/?template=TM&content=talisman-buy) that it will be on sale at Games Day UK on the 23rd of September and at the Essen Toy Fair (18th - 21st October 2007).
Since I will go to the latter, getting the game early would be another reason for me to actually buy it.
A few months ago my local FLGS owner said it was due out in Oct. Don't know an exact date though.
I've got the main game and all the add-ons... city, timescape, dungeon, and expansion packs. We played the heck out of it my college years and it's pretty worn in some spots! :) I'm looking forward to the re-release myself.

As long as the 4th edition is close to the 2nd ed., then it's gonna be golden. I played the heck out of Talisman 2nd ed., and still have it on my bookshelf (plus the City, Dungeon, Adventure, and Timescape supplements.) For some reason, I never got the Dragons expansion. Still, it's great to see Talisman coming back into print - and hopefully being "discovered" by a new generation of gamers.

I took Talisman with me for Desert Storm, we played it constantly. I wish I could budget for this new version.

Wow. I had no clue they were going to put this back into print. An absolute "must add to my list" boardgame (even if I do own older versions). Thanks for the heads-up on it!
Here's the website for it... Black Industries Talisman page (http://www.blackindustries.com/?template=TM&content=default). It says it releases in 18 days!
If you order directly from them you can get a special "pre-order only" Adventure card.
And you can see the new gameboard here (http://www.blackindustries.com/?template=TM&content=talisman-board) (scroll to the bottom).
Also found some of the art here (http://www.blackindustries.com/?template=TM&content=talisman-adventure-art) (love the Mephistopholes!).

Looks like it will be. They've shown several of the character cards and they've definitely got the old ones that were left out of the 3rd edition. I distinctly saw the Monk in one of the pictures (though he was kind of broken, glad to see him back.)
I played the 3rd edition and was really disappointed. The characters didn't have enough variety. With a couple exceptions they felt like they were minor variations on the same warrior-type character. That was a large part of the charm of the 2nd edition, all the different abilities; each character was so distinct.

yes...the prophetess is way too good...as is the monk and the astropath
for some crazy fun...try gestalting talisman characters (choose 2 keep the best stats of either and all the abilities)
as for this new version i have to say it seems pretty lousy...its really just a remake and a poor one at that....i was excited when i first heard about it...but since i own all of the original second edition stuff i see no need to buy this...
i suppose if you really want it and dont want to plunk down the extra for the 2nd edition (what most people are familair with) than snag it, but its really just a reprint not a whole new game
heres an interesting review (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/197659)

Well see that's it. I don't own the 2nd edition. I had friends who did and we always played with one of their sets. By the time I realized I should have gotten one of my own, it was gone. I bought the 3rd edition for my nephews for Christmas one year and was disappointed with how much it departed from the 2nd. So personally I'm thrilled that the 4th looks like it's going to be essentially the same, just with some new artwork (and some pretty spiffy looking artwork it is too, from what I've seen).

Why would they make this EXTREMELY limited?
From the reaction the announcement of the re-release got this game should be like printing money for GW, and they sure need it (although Black Library is one of the profit-making subsidiaries anyway as far as I know).

Well, it's not really thowing it in the garbage. :) And besides, if I find I don't like it I can always resell it. Ebay is a wonderful thing sometimes. :p

my guess? because its one of the "grail" games that commands big bucks on Ebay....they want it to not piss off the folks who already own 2nd, but instead get them to buy it as well...
and hair....yes ebay is good, for resales and all...or if yer into boardgames theres always math trades...but with already owning second, and this being just a subpar remake...whats the point? i personally would rather spend those 50 bucks (plus shipping) on another really cool game or something....
dont get me wrong when they first announced a new talisman i was like "hot damn! sign me up!" then as reviews and info began trickling in i saw what it was and said "pass. ill buy runebound instead" just dont see the sense of it....

My opinion only...
It's going to be a limited edition thing so I should probably get it when I can... even if it's just to check it out.
My 2nd edition version has seen better days (it's been played a TON). So this is worth the money to see it again.
I don't really have time to learn new games. I barely have time for the ones I play now.
If it really does blow, I'll get rid of it. I might take a couple of bucks in a loss even, but that's OK. At least I'll be able to say "had it, didn't like it" vs "I wonder how bad it really was?".
And finally (and probably most important) I do have the disposable income to "toss 50 bucks in the garbage" if I choose. ;)

touche...i do not...mostly ;)
and i suppose with a name like talisman you can pretty well bank on its collectability (i know i passed on picking up 3rd edition right away...and you know if i had i could resell em for more than id spent)
btw my second edition is a tad worn, but has been very well (read anally) taken care of over the many years and still holds up pretty well...what exactly has happened to yours?

Showing that much consideration for costumers who bought a board game 20 years ago really doesn't benefit them that much.

yah we played it a bunch in college where i was first introduced to it..and started buying all the sets...(comics for collectors having a midnight 50% off sale helped) and it saw reasonable play thru the years, but these days it doesnt see much table time...even at the local monthly boardgame meet...just due to sheer time of play...it turns some folks off...

Look at the title of Talisman.
See "Warhammer" anywhere near it?
Hence the short print run.
They do that with anything not involving their 3 main game lines. Stupid, I agree. But GW does that.
Hell, the last reprinting of Talisman 3rd edition?
They made enough for them to give one to each direct sales account, no more.
Moronic marketing for their side games, as many of them are very good (Blood Bowl, Space Hulk, and Mordheim are AWESOME miniature games.)
EmperorNorton
09/15/2007, 05:12
I agree, as Blood Bowl is probably my favourite game ever (won a tournament at my local store last weekend) and spend the evening yesterday playing Space Crusade.
Not only are these games lots of fun, but they are also the entry into the GW hobby for lots of people. It just baffles me that they decide to lose out on that opportunity.

I got to play the game at GenCon for a little bit. It was a great deal of fun but if someone manages to find a way to get to the 2nd level without brute force, it's difficult to catch up.
They were selling the game there, but only 50 boxes a day. I was doing the mad dash on the last day to help a friend get a box as soon as the dealer's room opened. Crazy stampede. Anyhoo, we asked why they were only selling 50 boxes a day. Their response was that they weren't sure how well the game would be received, so they went with conservative numbers.
Not sure if that was BS, or not. I'm afraid I don't know much about Black Industries. Is reviving the old-school Talisman that big a financial risk for them? Given the great response at GenCon, I'd think they would be fine with incremental releases to say the least. Start with a limited run and then go wider a few months later, y'know?
I'm sorely tempted to order myself a copy, but I don't have enough game time these days as it is.
AFAIK Black Industries tends to error on the side of caution when printing/publishing...which is probably a good thing (for them)...so I can see why this is a "limited release".

I still consider Talisman one of the best games ever. Fortunately, my copy is still in good shape so I'll skip buying the 4th ed. However, I'd spend the $50 if I didn't already own one. In spite of the less-than-glowing reviews that I have read, I think it's worth it - if anything for the nostalgia of those many nights spent gaming in the company of friends.
Or maybe I'll wind up buying the 4th ed. and giving it to my kids when they grow up, so that they'll stay away from my "precious" 2nd ed.! :)
(BTW, what would you say a complete 2nd ed. Talisman is worth these days? I went on evil-Bay and they had a Hebrew version of Talisman for $75. Does that sound too pricey to you?)

Yep. A friend of mine (one of my college buddies who used to play the game with me) wanted the game and bought it on ebay. Of course, this is before we knew it was being reprinted. It didn't have the Timescape expansion (I think it was that one) and it still cost him over $300.

Jumpin' Jehosophat!! According to the link posted above, the board game by itself is about $300 (Talisman 2nd ed.) and the expansions are about $200-300 each (except for Dragons, which is $600.) Of course, that's just one seller but now it makes a whole lot more sense to buy the 4th ed. at $50 than to hunt down the out-of-print version!
(After all, you can get the game for the price of 5 HC boosters! hee hee hee!)
Wow, I didn't realize I had that kind of Talisman money sitting on my bookshelf (and in good condition, too.)

those prices are also for unplayed, and probably sealed copies...for collectors mostly.
don't get me wrong its still worth a bunch, but without all of the individual boxes (i foolishly cut mine up) its worth a goodly bit less....

Yes, I agree that condition/completeness of the games are a huge factor in how much someone would be willing to pay me for my stuff. All the same, just think how much it would run you to try buying the Talisman game plus expansions if you were to shop for 2nd ed. stuff. I don't expect to put my kids through college with the proceeds - but then again I don't expect to sell my Talisman and its expansions. Just saying, is all. :)

After viewing the artwork and some reviews, I have decided that I still prefer my trusty 2nd edition game as is.
I have no idea why I didn't think of this before but...
I bought this new edition because I loved 2nd edition and my 2nd edition is very 'well used'. But it hit me just now that I might be able to use some of my 2nd edition expansions with this set! Why not attach the city? Or use the alternate endings (a curse on the Horrible Black Void!)?
Hmmm... I'm gonna have to look a bit closer at this new edition.

That's quite the table space. The new board looks pretty big all on its own.
I was let down by the new artwork and text, but I would like to know how well balanced this edition is. I never liked the horrible black void as you could sometimes steal a victory, by getting to the end first, from other more powerful characters with the Dwarf.
I played the 4th edition last night with my daughter. It was exactly like I remember it. :classic: My only complaints are...
The size of the text on the cards. It's very small. You better be playing in good light (we were).
The life, craft, and strength counters have raised numbers but they're the same color as the counters, making them hard to see.
Other than that, great game!

Sure. The art is amazing, both on the Adventure cards and the board. It's the classic rules (no changes, which I'm happy about). The dice are pretty cool (sort of yellowish with a Talisman symbol for the "1") and I might have to use them in my HC games!

The video version looks...well, I don't know. The video doesn't really show much. Just a 3-D version of the board. Wonder if it's just going to be a version that you can play on your videogame system, with the battles animated, or if they're going to do some sort of adventure game loosely based on the board game. Fromt he preview, it kind of looks like the former, but it really doesn't give you enough information.

Call me crazy, but if that's the case I'd rather play the actual board game than the video game. Unless, of course, we're talking the ability to hook up to a network and play Talisman against other people all over the world. Now that would make better sense to me.

personally, I think it's cool, that folks that might never have been exposed to some really great games (ok so ive started to reach saturation point on settlers and carcassone, but they're great intro games) might check them out, then they can maybe look for more and find power grid or puerto rico :)

Well, to give this thread some closure (or to open it up again) I got a copy of the game for Christmas and I wasn't disappointed. To answer those who didn't see a point to a new edition, is it significantly different from the second edition? No. In fact with a few minor rules tweaks, it is pretty much exactly the same. But I'm fine with that. Sure if you've already got a copy, there's no reason to get this (unless yours is falling apart or in good condition and you want to preserve it).
