View Full Version : Music Trivia Game

Do you have a music trivia question that you think may be able to stump the group? Until they google it anyway :p . I'm pulling this one off the One-Hit Wonder thread.
Of these artists one is able to be called a one hit wonder twice. How was this artist able to accomplish that? Not so crazy as it may seem.
Don't worry, be happy- Bobby McFerrin
Black velvet- Alannah Myles?
Lemon tree- Fools Garden
Electric Avenue- Eddy Grant
More than words- Extreme
Name the song and the artist, referencing the above artist as well.
THIS PART IS IMPORTANT - DO NOT POST A NEW QUESTION UNTIL THE PREVIOUS ONE HAS BEEN ANSWERED.

Is it Bobby McFerrin, because there was that singing fish that made the song popular again.

You could argue Gary Cherone of Extreme. I think he had at least one song with Van Halen that wasn't a sin against all that is good and decent in the world. And he may have a hit or two with his current project. Tribes of Judah, or something like that.

You're on the right track, but if he had a hit with Van Halen it still would have been a multiple for them.
so, no, neither answer above is correct. That leaves:
Black velvet- Alannah Myles?
Lemon tree- Fools Garden
Electric Avenue- Eddy Grant
Who had a second one hit wonder?

Eddy Grant
It was released a while back to large success, but then nothing else appeared. So he has had a one-hit wonder twice. :)

Hmm.
Eddy Grants had loads of songs I think too.
Alannah Myles charted at no.1 in the US, then none of her other sogns even charted.
Could it be her because she was a one hit wonder in loads of countries? Or maybe because she got a no.1 in Canada, while most of her other singles were very low down? No, that makes no sense.
She's rereleasing Black Velvet, is that relevant?
Maybe it is Eddy Grant. Is it something to do with the chain of shops that made it their theme tune/cover versions?

Pashy, you're just missing it. You're just looking in the wrong direction.
Hint: one artist had a hit with a band he/she was in a decade before they had a solo hit.

No idea.
Eddy Grant hasn't been accosiated with any bands that I've found, and Alannah Myles has, but no famous ones, and not with a record deal.

Grant was with a reggae act that hit the charts in the late '60s or early '70s, so I'm guessing that he's the correct answer.

All Hail hail:knockedou.
Eddy Grant had a chart hit in 1968 with a song he wrote called Baby Come Back. He was lead guitarist in the band which was called The Equals. The song was a top 40 hit in both the UK (#1) and the US (#32) making him a double shot of one hit wonder.
Check out Eddy Grant without dreads and with dyed blonde hair in this pic The Equals with Eddy Grant (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Equals)

Okay, mine will be less of a question and more of a challenge. In my opinion, one of the most irritating things a band can do is write a song with the band's name in it. So I'm going to ask who can come up with the most songs that feature this tiresome but all too common convention. I'll get us started:
The Sisters of Mercy - "Adrenochrome" (they name themselves two or three times throughout the song)
Counting Crows - "A Murder of One" (not just the band's name, but a whole nursery rhyme)
They Might Be Giants - "They Might Be Giants" (well, there's no disguising the intent of that one)

Tenacious D - Wonderboy
Kid Rock - American Bad ###

This isn't exactly naming themselves in a song but...
In the Who's Rock Opera Quadrophenia, at the beginning of the song "Helpless Dancer," another song by the Who, "The Kids Are Alright" is heard playing. Additionally, during the song "5:15," they make a reference to another Who song ("Ma-ma-My Generation!") Finally, if you read the liner notes of the Rock Opera (which is just about the only way you'd be able to find out what's going on in this album), the main character, Jimmy, actually goes to a Who concert.

Also Killer Queen.

Yeah, no one really posted so I forgot about this.
It was first released in December 1974
It was next covered with new lyrics to the verses in 1998. It was part of a double A-Sided single wihich featured a cover of a Red Hot Chilli Peppers song.
It was most famously covered in 2001, this time adding a rap verse and only some slight lyric changes.

I'm guessing it must have been a song that was made into a rap version, but I don't know if there were more than two versions of this song released. The time frame for it's original release may be a couple years early. Walk This Way?
Pashmina
09/17/2007, 16:50
Nope. Not a rap version, just a rap verse was included in the second cover.
Next clue; The most recent cover was featured on a best-selling soundtrack.

As popular urban legend goes...The line immediately preceeding was "So he waits behind..."
Allegedly John took it upon himself to perform a literal action on the word behind and mooned Paul.

Okay, I know this one from personal experience - and because of that, you get back story. My uncle was a session percussionist back in the '80s and '90s, so he spent a lot of time playing shows in the Chicago area. He was a regular with this ensemble called the Big Band Machine, and there was something involving a Harry Chapin tribute. But the best gigs were the one-offs where he'd be called in to back up some over-the-hill Chicago-based musician at a dinner theater or county fair. Those were awesome. In the course of lugging gear for him, I got to meet Kevin Cronin from REO Speedwagon (this was before their "Behind the Music" special), Dennis DeYoung from Styx, and a whole list of others. But the important one for this discussion is the guy from Ides of March. He was playing the Berwyn summer festival (held in the parking lot with that big spike with all the cars on it that you see in Wayne's World). Predictably, he did "Vehicle," but he also did Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" - which, at the time, I wrote off as a cheesy cover of a song that, you know, fits with summer and carnival rides. But then he did a whole monologue about how he wrote it. And it turns out that he did. So there's your connection - Ides of March guy wrote "Eye of the Tiger" for Survivor.
