Well, apparently the lukewarm reception given to The Police wasn't lesson enough, as Led Zeppelin are the latest legendary rock band to reunite. Robert Plant has confirmed that they're getting back together for a one-off charity gig in London (rumored date: November 26). This is a dramatic reversal of the band's responses to press inquiries just a few months ago, when questions about a possible reunion were greeted with derision and laughter. There's a press conference scheduled tomorrow, and more details are expected.

Well, for my money Led Zeppelin is a waaaaayyyyyy better band then the Police. My daughter says she's going to force me to take off from work to go see them if it happens and they come to my area. As far as I'm concerned, Robert Plant hasn't lost a step.

I take it Jason Bonham is going to be their drummer?

Undoubtedly.
Where are you at man? I'm looking for your input on the Rock Wars 34! Santana's getting creamed by the Talking Heads!

I kinda have mixed feelings about this. I love the Zep's music. I believe sometimes you just have to get the Led out. However, the fact that they said, "Led Zeppelin is not Led Zeppelin without Bonzo," is one of the things I respect them most for. If a tour somehow spun out of this, I think I'd be bothered by it just a little.

If this is true I MUST see them. If I do I wll have completed my "Holy Trinity" of concerts: Led Zeppelin, Ted Nugent and Molly Hatchet. Granted without Bonzo it's not actually Led Zeppelin, but it's as close as we're gonna get (until they invent a time machine) ;)

we'll all have to visit London if we want to see it. It's a one night gig.

The Police tour was unfairly maligned! It was a great show, I loved it.
Bring on the Zep.
Of course, the real bane of these tours is Sting/Plant's voices aging. There's a reason why the Stones can still tour-- Mick could never really sing like these guys.

Yeah only thing I'm afraid of is Plant's voice wont sound nearly as good when they undoubtley do stairway(its gonna be around a 2 hr. set). It was sad seeing Paul Mccartney trying to sing like he did in the 60's. But just not that well at the Superbowl I hope that doesn't happen w/ Zep.
I feel like it's a bad idea. Led Zeppelin was one of the best bands at building a mythology around themselves. Seeing them live, even old recordings on DVD, would have been like a religious experience. But there's no way they can live up to that manic otherworldliness they embodied in their youth, which is why I think it's a shame they're reuniting and potentially hurting that image/mythology. But since it's only one show, and I'm sure magic still flows through their veins I could be wrong. May the spirit of Bonzo be there with them.

Plant still tours and performs though. My uncle and cousin saw him live and said he was great, and my uncle was a fan back in the day, so I don't think you need to worry too much about Plant's voice. Just worry about the crotch rocking of a man over 50 years old.

Though I want to believe that the re-formed Zep will rock, I just don't know. The last time I saw Led Zeppelin together was during Live Aid. OK, so we're talking 1985 or so, but Robert Plant's voice was shot. Maybe it didn't help that Phil Collins played the drums? I don't know.
Growing up, I loved Led Zeppelin. It hurt to see them so... washed up way back then. If things have changed and I am completely off-base, okay, I can accept that. All the same, there is a reason that people eventually retire. It's better to go out at the top of your game than as a dinosaur rocker who is past his prime.
After all, it's been a long time since they've rock and rolled....

Yeah he didnt sound that great but check out some of his albums they're pretty good (not as good as Zeppelin but good). And remember they're not doing this for publicity, they're doing it for a friend of theirs who died so this definitley has a good reason as to why.

I agree that the sentiment behind the concert is a good one. It's the execution that worries me. Oh, and about Plant's non-Led Zep albums (especially with the Honeydrippers), I liked'em fine. However, his voice doesn't perform live like it used to. Smoking, drugs, age, all that stuff will do it to ya. By the way, regardless of how it may seem I do love Led Zeppelin, but let's just say that I don't think that the years have been kind to them.

I think the only problem that could arise is the vocals (hopefully they play the harder to sing songs first supposedly its gonna be a 2 hour set). I have a feeling that they're gonna open with a long over due Rock and roll, maybe immigrant song or another fast paced one after words, then stairway. I doubt we'll see anything that has to do with extremely strong drumming ( When the Levee breaks, moby dick, misty mountain hop). Sadly I doubt we'll here Achilles Last Stand a favorite of mine ( its a 10:22 masterpiece off of Presence). The Page/Jones instrumentals should be perfect though.

I looove "Achille's Last Stand".
The whole thing is a charity gig in honor of Ahmet Ertegun who recently passed away. I don't think it's going to be something that anybody is going to be ashamed of when it's all said and done.
I've got all of Robert Plant's solo work and his various collaborations with Jimmy Page. I haven't heard anything in Plant's voice to suggest he no longer has it. He'll soon be releasing a collaboration with Allison Krauss. She's got a pretty powerful voice herself, so it's obvious he's not lacking in confidence in what he can do. I'm sure he'll construct the show to avoid any limitations he might have rooted out. I think this is gonna be cool and look forward to buying the CD when it comes out eventually.

In the studio, definitely not. Digital sound is a miracle worker. Live and on stage, let's just hope for the best. I don't think Mr. Plant will be hitting those high notes or wailing like he used to back in the day. But again, I'd love to be proved wrong.

Me too  ;)
I'd want them to open with We're Gonna Groove, since that's such an amazing opener, but I don't think anyway they could compete with their former glory on that song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qX0QYuVuHrI

I hope they open with Song Remains the Same, I know they used to so maybe they still will. Such an awesome song. I'd love to hear over the hills and far away.

That could close it, it is off their final and somewhat ironically titled, In Through The Out Door.

Very true thats why Achilles Last Stand is so great as well, Amazing guitar/base riffs, sick drumming and amazing vocals combine to create one of in my opinion the best songs ever made. Whole Lotta love (live) in its 23 minute glory is sweet too. If you havent heard it pick up "how the west was won" its a sick live album.

Though by far the best track on HtWWW is "Bron-Yr-Aur Stomp". Just their ability to play that so well live is amazing.
Fool In The Rain is such an un-Zeppelin song. I love their heavy blues stuff the best. How Many More Times, Since I've Been Loving You, Bring It On Home, When the Levee Breaks, The Lemon Song... the list goes on. The only thing I really wonder if this concert will have is Moby Dick. Bonzo isn't there, but I'm sure everyone would love to see his kid have a go at it.

I don't think it'll happen, that is an extremely complex crazy solo. Playing the drums as hard as it requires without sticks is insane as Dave Grohl says " You'd have to drink a bottle of Vodka just to think about doing that". From what I've heard Jason is a great drummer but nothing near his Fathers Caliber. And besides the solos 19 minutes, I dont think they'll use that time for a possibly disasterous solo.

Well it's over now. It's supposed to have gone so well that there's huge talk of a world tour. One roadblock is a planned tour for Plant with Allison Krause to promote Raising Sand. It's too bad Allison Krause couldn't tour with Led Zeppelin. She'd certainly benefit from the exposure.

They sounded pretty good. A radio station near me got a bootleg copy of (maybe only some) songs and they played "Stairway" yesterday during Club Led (every weekday at 6:00pm they play 3 Zeppelin songs). They sounded almost the same in my opinion, though the quality of the recording was a bit off.
