I said I was going to do this and I'm doing it. One of the music genres I've always enjoyed was the progressive rock acts of the Seventies. I was a huge fan of Yes, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, ELP, King Crimson, Genesis (w/ Peter Gabriel) all the big names. Yeah, I know that sometimes some of these bands went a little over the top at times, but they were still fun for me.
To me newer bands like Radiohead and Coldplay have brought this genre back and you don't hear me complaining as I love those groups as well.
But there are some groups that weren't quite as high profile as the ones I mentioned and these are what I'd like to share with you.
Nektar: I originally thought this was a German band but I later discovered they were a British band based in Germany. The two albums I'm most familiar with by these guys are "Remember The Future" and "Down to Earth".
Here's some links for You Tube

the next group I'd like to showcase is Camel.
Camel has two albums that I'll focus on: Mirage and The Snow Goose. They're contemporaries of Nektar but were just as good.
The Snow Goose was interesting as it was inspired by a short story by Paul Gallico. The story was about a lonely hunchbacked lighthouse keeper who nurses a wounded snow goose back to health a local girl shows interest in the health of the goose and visits him regularly until the snow goose recovers. The story is about unrequited love because the publishers wouldn't allow Gallico to write a scene consumating the relationship between the hunchback and the girl. It's also about heroism and sacrifice as the hunchback named Rhayader, risks his life to ferry wounded soldiers across the English Channel during D-Day.

I'll throw a few in:
Unfortunately most of the ones I like haven't a good youtube video to put up.
Hawkwind - although as Lemmy said it was a four piece rock band at the core surrounded by flim flam.
I'd offer a couple of clips but the ones available are poor quality, if you want to try them out, have a listen to the compilation "Night of the Hawk" or Hall of the Mountain Grill, if you like some of those move on to Space Ritual or Masters of the Universe. Sonic Attack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQnDnNDGecg)
Pallas - Find a copy of "The Sentinel" if you are interested in the Atlantis myth. Here are a couple of tracks from that release Arrive Alive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8xIYDzSaS0) Rise & Fall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9ezWiOTXOo)
Slough Feg - avoid the youtube links, they are embarassing music quality, visit their website Slough Feg (http://www.sloughfeg.com/) and have a listen to the tracks provided, fans of Slaine MacRoth will get a kick out of some of the albums.
Pink Floyd the early years Careful with that Axe Eugene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3R2PgMiTvw), Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5_0iZQ-TuA),

You didn't tell me what you thought of Nektar and Camel, oh mighty wizard.
Pallas might be interesting if I were actually to hear the "Sentinel" CD. I wonder if it's easily available stateside.
The cut from Hawkwind was familiar to me as I own an album with that track on it. Unfortunately my albums aren't easily accessed right now. I found it interesting that Michael Moorcock was so heavily involved with them. So Lemmy was with them eh? Was this before Motorhead?
Slough Fey has a cool name but they strike as more of a metal band.
Anyway, here are all I could find on youtube for the band Caravan. I was disappointed that there were no links from the album " For Girls Who Grow Plump in the Night" which is my favorite from them. These guys were some serious horndogs I guess.

You're Dad? How old are you? I thought you were one of the older members. But King Crimson does rule, I'm just burned out on doing anymore links today.
How old are you?
Only the mods and my mother know that.
Suffice to say, I'm old enough to be more than slightly embarrassed by my persistent presence here on HCRealms and my dedication to this game! :p ;)

Court of the Crimson King is the only CD of King Crimson that is not released here.
As to the earlier tracks, Nektar sounded interesting, Camel may take a while to get used to (a bit like Hawkwind live).
Lemmy was a bass player for Hawkwind around 72-74, he was fired for getting caught carrying drugs across the US/Canada border. He wrote Lost Johnny and Motorhead while in Hawkwind (their version of Motorhead is on Night of the Hawks).
The Sentinel might be available for those that look, I got mine from Amazon a couple of years ago.
Slough Feg are metal, but their albums are based around a theme, One is around the GDW Traveller game series, another around Slaine from 2000ad.

There's a newer prog-rock band that I think is "different". The band plays like Tool, but unlike Tool these guys actually have a set :nervous:. The drummer Brann Dailor is off the wall.

Progressive rock has a bit of a stigma thanks to the attitudes of music critics and the advent of punk rock in the late Seventies. Maybe some of it is warranted and maybe it's not. I don't spend a lot of time worrying about other people's opinions, I like to form my own. I like to think opinions are like @$$#*#*# and if you voice them too loud you seem like you've got two @$$#*#*#. I like this style of music because it makes a perfect soundtrack for my own Walter Mittyish fantasies. If you don't get that literary reference, you aren't being exposed to the right things.
Generally the British seemed to do this better then Americans did. Kansas gave it a good try but for my money their first album was their only really good album.
I like some of the bands that seem to be reviving the genre like Radiohead and Coldplay, I would say that Trail of the Dead fits the bill.
I heard somewhere that Jimi Hendrix was in negotiations to join the members of ELP. Can you imagine what that would have sounded like? They would have been called HELP.
For the record, I like ELP. I have a tendency to like the first album by a band that I hear best and "Trilogy" was my first album by them and I still like it. I will make no apologies for that. I think if they had hooked up with Hendrix, it would only have lasted one or two albums and the Hendrix would have moved on.

For the record they did put out a third album, around '77,'78 that hasn't been released on CD. When it was released I was initially disappointed that it sounded nothing like the first two releases. After a few listens it grew on me some. I'm sure the fact it was so different is the main reason it's not available on CD. Luckily, no Allman Brother died in the making of that album.

Nice link, but I have to disagree with that line that they never produced anything truly essential to one's prog rock collection. Who the heck is this clown that he determines what's essential? The arrogance of music critics never fails to appall me.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I am a HUGE fan of Rush, Dream Theater, Spock's beard, and Neil Morse(ex-leader of Spock's Beard).
If you like Rush or Dream Theater-then get these DVD's:
Rush In Rio
Dream Theater-Score.
Score rOcKs hard. I just got it.
I can't recommend DT enough.
They've been around 20 years now.
They started out when Nirvana did and have a loyal underground following that has gotten them this far without radio or mainstream support.
Their guitar player tours with Satriani sometimes in G3.
If you get a chance to ever see Rush live in person-do it before they retire.
You will be totally blown away.
Also, if you are or were a fan of Yes, then get 90210 the re-mastered version.
Their albums Talk and Big Generator are good too if you like the Trevor Rabin years.
