This is the thread to discuss anything and anything that can be called Classic Rock. Talk about them all. Foghat, Nazareth, The Byrds, Steppenwolf, Bad Company, Bachman Turner Overdrive, Blue Oyster Cult, you name 'em.
And if anybody shows up crying and complaining about how they hate classic rock be advised that we will arrange for them to be visited by the Dream Police courtesy of Cheap Trick. You have been warned.

Now tell me who you still like and who you burned yourself out on because you've played them too much and who never really lit a fuse for you. (This last is for those oldtimers who were there when these acts were opening for somebody else.)

For instance, I never could get into Meat Loaf at all, like only a small amount of Billy Joel and felt that the real talent in Kiss was in their Kabuki makeup. Without that they would never have been very big. Just my opinion.

Kiss's true talent was and still is their marketing. Gene and Paul will be the first to admit it. Its way Ace went solo for awhile.

I have to say that The Allman Brothers have replaced Molly Hatchet as my 3rd favorite band. I've been listening to At Fillmore East practically every day for the past week. Gotta love that "Trouble No More".

"Dreams" by the Allman Brothers Is one of my all time favorite songs. It's too bad it didn't make it onto "Live at Fillmore East". I like Molly Hatchett's version a lot, too.

"At Fillmore East," "Eat a Peach," and Derek and the Dominoes' "Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs" are all somewhere on my list of CD wants, midlevel priority after some harder to find wants.

One of my professors looks sorta like Meat Loaf. We're going to try to see if we can get him to sing "Paradise By the Dashboard Light" sometime.

Also I have a pretty big collection of bootleg concerts (Mostly on disc). Would anyone be interested in starting up a bootleg trading group?

I never did the bootleg thing much, but might have to check with friends who are into it.

I took off work today and went for lunch with my wife. we were driving and switching radio stations and hit on the classic rock station and they were playing Billy Squier. Man, my boy had some heavy-duty balls for rock chops. it was two for Tuesday and we got to hear both The Stroke and Everybody Wants You. Got me thinking that I don't have any Billy on my IPod. I need to get those songs and My Kind of Lover, In the Dark, Don't Say You Love Me, Rock Me Tonight and anything else I might have missed.

Sure it was over the top and all, but sometimes you just have to rock without boundaries.

I'm not sure what is and isn't defined as classic Rock nowadays.

How old does it have to be?

Does Metal-ish stuff count as classic rock?

Does it have to have had a level of commercial success be it on record or live?

Rush is considered classic rock and they didn't have much mainstream success. They still have a huge following.

The local radio station has a very broad definition of classic rock. U2 is frequently played, along with GNR, Sammy era Van Halen, and a little Black Crowes. They also have a "Rogaine Rock" show on Saturdays, playing eighties hair metal.

Rush were a reasonably big concert draw and achieved a level of international success that the far superior Canadian band Helix could only dream of.

I think a better Canadian band to compare Rush to would be Triumph. Helix was more of a 80s Hair Band that played a heavy metal/hard rock brand of anthemic rock. I wouldn't necessarily consider Helix as a classic rock act.

I don't even think U2 is a classic rock act, but because their style of music is closely related to what the mainstream AOR audience listens to, it makes this crossover to classic rock radio. It's the same with a band like Pearl Jam as well. Hail could probably explain this one better than me.

Is the Velvet Underground classic rock? I like them kinda. Mainly Nico's voice in certain songs/ the connection to Andy Warhol.

Anything Pashmina doesn't like? I kid, I kid. Actually Pash, I was hoping you'd see the humor in that. I thought I'd tweak you a little for all your demonstrations of Classic Rock dismay I keep seeing in the Rock Wars thread. All in good fun though.

Black Sabbath and Deep Purple metal would certainly count. I found it absurd when they finally put a metal category for the Grammys and the first winner was Jethro Tull. Talk about being disconnected. I would have been only slightly less surprised if Tony Bennet had been the winner. The guys who voted for that probably would have liked to have seen Pat Boone's cover album of all things metal out in time to be voted on. (This is not a jab against Jethro Tull. Had they won a prog rock category, I would see no irony.)
I would also say it would likely be from a period prior to the Sex Pistols.
I think that yeah, they would have to have had some commercial success to have a large number of people having feelings of nostalgia for the musicians strongest body of work. Maybe someone else has something to add. (Still, I admit early U2 had a classic rock feel.)

Absolutely. Some, myself included, even consider them classic punk.

The umbrella that is the term 'classic rock' covers a whole lotta music.

Consider the Velvet Underground classic rock as you'd consider Bjork alternative. Does she fit the bill? Yes, but she can't be tied down to it. I'm a big fan of the VU as you can probably tel by my screen name, and they were a band that couldn't be categorized as so many other bands of the time were. I've heard Lou Reed of the Velvet Underground played on CR stations, but I don't think I've ever heard a VU song, which brings us to the question of them being classic rock or not. Classic Punk? yeah, T'Chaka has that right. Classic Alternative? Definitely. Classic Grunge? Lyrically yes. Classic Rock? They were there, but I think because they were "different" in the sounds and lyrics they produced, that programmers will always stay away from them.

Darkly constructed songs with stark but realistic lyrical content. No one at that time wanted to tackle the subjects that the VU did. Add in their collaboration with Andy Warhol and they were so far removed from the sounds and the look of the times.

I'd say that the VU are one of the top 5 influential bands ever. There's a list of bands that's 1000+ strong that have somehow been influenced by the VU. They may not have sold a ton of records themselves, and that's a shame. I have the live dvd and also the boxed 5 CD set with outtakes and alternative cuts and highly recommend it to everyone.

Yeah, the only Lou Reed song I've heard on the local CR station is "Take a Walk on the Wild Side," and I haven't heard any VU. I think my bro's a big fan of the VU, though.

The problem with categorizing something as 'classic rock' if it is played on classic rock radio is the reality that most classic rock radio stations -- unless independently owned and operated, and there's very few of these left -- have a rotation of about tops 100 to 125 'classic rock' songs.

There are classic tunes on CCR albums and Doors albums and Stones albums that you'll never hear on classic rock radio. In addition to Velvet Underground, bands like Love and Moby Grape are definitely classic rock, but you'll never hear one of their songs on these stations. Unfortunately, the majority of listeners wanna hear 'Flirtin' With Disaster' and 'Slow Ride' and 'Green Eyed Lady' over and over and over again.

Clear Channel is the suxxor, but that's why satellite radio and streaming internet radio are the future.

If you want an intense Lou Reed experience; check out his "Berlin" album, but don't listen to it if you're prone to depression because it ain't gonna cheer you up.

Too many people shunt The Doors aside in classic rock discussions.

They hit big in 1968. They cranked out 6 albums in three years, and then Morrison died in 1971 at the age of 27.

Yet most of their catalog tends to be reduced to "Light My Fire," "Break On Through," "Love Her Madly" and "Touch Me."

True. I guess every band is reduced to their hits, but there's some awesome stuff hidden in the cracks.

"Moonlight Drive" and "Peacefrog" and "Hyacinth House" are among my favorites.

Yeah, they could get pretentious, but they often seemed to balance that out with a healthy dose of the gutteral and lowbrow, too.

Lions in the street and roaming dogs in heat...rabid...foaming. A beast caged in the heart of a city...

I actually heard Celebration of the Lizard played in its entirety once on the radio, OH but what a radio experience. That was over 20 years ago :( We'll never hear stations playing complete "Album" sides again.

Can I throw out rep 5 times to you for this. I just had a conversation with my youngest son about this...THIS MORNING! He asked on the way to school why we heard the same song played 3 times in a 4 day span at just about the same time. I tried to explain the whole ClearChannel thing with the 150 song or so list and how independence in radio is a thing of the past.

If you get the Alice Cooper on your local radio station, it's awesome. He pulls out stuff I don't regularly hear on the radio, especially in his "Cooper's Closet Classics" and "Cooper's Covers." For example, my radio station never plays Barrett era Pink Floyd, but Alice Cooper loves it. Another good one I've heard him play on his show is "109th Dream" by Bob Dylan.

Nothing wrong with a bit of Musica Latina.

I'm going to hijack the classic rock thread with a few Latina recommendations.

Los Rabanes - A Spanish Language Ska Punk band from Panama.

The Orisha's - Salsa/Hip Hop fusion from Cuba

Compay Segundo - A Cuban Son singer, associated with the Buena Vista Social Club. Chan Chan is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard.

I never got into Zappa the way others seemed to. It was obvious he was avant garde, he definitely shouldn't be pigionholed. He's done stuff that's made me laugh but other then being a contemporary and a member of the counter culture, he's way different then John Lennon and Mick Jagger.
