Since a number of people are enjoying the B-17 thread, I've been thinking about the other WWII story-driven solitaire game I own. It's called "Patton's Best" & it involves commanding a Sherman tank in the battle across France & into Germany from July 1944 through May 1945.
This one, unfortunately, has fewer crew spaces. From the previous times I played it, I can say that it also has a high body count. The Germans, quite frankly, had much better tanks than the Americans, with better armor and bigger guns. What we run into in any one sector as we move across the map is randomly generated. If its a squad of infantry or a couple of trucks, we can usually handle it. If it's a smaller tank like a Panzer mark IV, then we've got a good chance. If it's a Tiger tank or a Panther tank, then it's time to start praying.
Basically, you go through the time frame covered by the game day-by-day. For each day, you roll percentage dice to see if you encounter Germans. If we have an encounter, it may be an advance against relatively light resistance, a full-scale battle, or a defensive action. When a battle of any sort happens, it involves a task force moving across the map from one randomly determined starting area to another. A move from one sector to another takes a specific amount of time depending on the terrain and whether we've taken time to call in any air or artillery support. The father we advance before night fall, the better chance of scoring enough points to get a victory.
If at any point we take a hit, damage is determined in large part by what we are hit with. As in B-17, damage may be to the tank itself or result in dead or wounded crew.
To see some cool Sherman tank action, take a look at this:

Back to the game: We need 4 crewmen in addition to myself, plus a lot of reserves.
The tank commander makes the tactical decisions and directs fire (if he is gutsy enough to keep his head poked out of the turret, he can direct fire more accurately.) The Gunner and loader handle the main gun. The driver, obviously, drives the tank. The Assistant driver usually handles the bow-mounted machine gun.
First come-first serve for grabbing the crew spots.
Tank Commander--Kalel21
Gunner--Rokk Krinn
Loader--bigbro911
Driver--Thawmus
Asst. Driver--batfink
Reserves: Antipathy; thepunisher27; JackAssterson; theanalogkid; AlienFlanders; jackofhearts2005; DarkCorsair; CurBludgeon
WARNING: This game is more time-consuming than B-17, so it'll be slower than that game. We'll probably only be running a few missions a month, so this thread will not move along as quickly as the other game does.
