View Full Version : Just got an X-Box 360, any suggestions?
Like most special things I own such as my Heroclix, computer, and girlfriend, I won this thing in a contest. Alas, it was a humble core system so it is severely weakened, but it still saves me the trouble of having to buy the whole console itself. On the plus side, it did come with a free Kameo and PGR3 so that was kinda nice. Aside from a hard drive and maybe a component cable, does anyone have any suggestions as to what games to get?

Well firstly, what kind of display are you running this on? SDTV? HDTV? Your PC monitor?
Secondly, congratulations on winning! What kind of contest was it? Rock/Paper/Scissors?
And finally, Kameo is a great game that you already have so no need to suggest it. I will suggest the following:
Gears of War
Halo 3
Dead Rising (depending on your display set up)
Orange Box

I'm just about to buy my 360, and I'll be getting;
360 Premium
Halo 3
Gears of War
Blue Dragon
...but past Halo and Gears (which are must-gets IMO), then it depends on your favourite genres;
~Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata and Enchanted Arms for RPG
~Plenty of different sports
~PGR3, Forza Motorsport 2, Flatout / Burnout for Racing
Iron Ham

BIOSHOCK!!!!
Dark Flash2099

Guitar Hero 2
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
Halo 3

I'm running it on a SDTV, but I may be getting an HDTV after Christmas. Or I might just win one of those too :p Oh, and it was an online contest, one of those win every hour deals from Pepsi. It's only happening in Canada though.
I should also mention that my computer has enough horsepower to run most games, so if it's coming out for both the PC and 360, odds are I'll just get the PC version. Especially in the case of Orange Box.
I should also add that if anyone has any suggestions of old X-Box games, that would be helpful too. It was the console I skipped last gen because I'm not too big on FPS's, but I would like to pick up some older classics like Ninja Gaiden and Panzer Dragoon Orta. I'll need to get X-Box Live setup first of course.

BioShock (PC or 360, whatever, just get it)
Halo 3 ('Cause that's where the HCR crew is)
Dead Rising (though playing it on a SDTV will make your eyes bleed)

Wow! Two questions - how did you get to own your girlfriend and what contest did you win in order to get to own her? You rule!

Orange Box seems like it will rock. I'll go through the stand outs from my library.
Ultimate Alliance
BioShock
Halo 3
Tomb Raider Legend
Dead Rising
Guitar Hero II
Smackdown vs. Raw 2007
Don't forget to check X-box Live for downloads too. Most games have additional features you can download. Also check out the X-box Arcade. There are many groovy classic games there. Finally look at that your XBL friends are playing.

I should be getting a 360 myself sometime soon and can't wait to get on Halo 3 with my friends. I'm gonna feel so behind once I get on there, but that's ok.

Well, the contest is an every hour winner thing from Pepsi only open to Canadian residents so...you may be out of luck there.
And you're definitely out of luck when it comes to winning my girlfriend. You know how many Pepsis I had to drink to win her? Let's just say the diabetes was worth it.
Also, to everyone suggesting Halo 3, you can save your breath. No offense to the game or anything, but the series just doesn't do anything for me. I lost interest pretty quickly in single and multi-player. Oh, and you better believe Bioshock is already on the list of games to play ;)

You'll do fine. We'll put you at the front of the team charges, so we can see if anyone has a sniper rifle. :cheeky:

Halo 3
Guitar Hero 2 or 3
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (unless your PC can run it)
Aegis Wing [free download full game from XBL arcade]
Darth Sabre

I know I am a bit late, but I cannot recommend these three games enough:
Guitar Hero 2
Guitar Hero 3
Rock Band
FUN!:classic:
Oh, I wish I could get my hands on Rock Band. If I have the cash somehow, it may be the first game I play. Then again, I need a working X-Box 360 to play anything on it, don't I?
I guess I'll call Microsoft once again to send me a box.
I picked up Rock Band on the 27th, just spent the last 7 hours with some friends playing. Way too much party fun packed into that box.

Ok I am a little late to the party but with GTA coming out in a few days I will be picking up a 360, but i have a few quick questions.
which version would you recommend?
Core Arcade
Standard 20GB
Elite
Halo3
A little more info.
I will not be playing online (no high speed in my area)
I will be gaming on a regular (not HD) TV

Standard 20GB. You're going to want the hard drive no matter what you play. I'd only go for the Elite/Halo 3 if you're a hardcore Halo fan or REALLY want the 120GB drive.

I was thinking about this myself. Do you know anything about the various hardware problems that the 360s have had? I've heard mixed reviews about whether those problems have been fixed, and I would really like to know the whole story before I go out and buy one.

No one knows for sure. Supposedly the new units out there have at LEAST better heatsinks in them; I don't know if the newer, cooler processor chip is out there yet.
All I can say is that the hardware failures are mostly due to overheating, and MS literally spent a billion dollars to try and remedy the issue, between hardware fixes and extending their warranty. If you're really concerned but really want a 360, consider buying a product replacement plan from your electronics vendor (if they offer one). I purchased one on my 360 when I got it from Best Buy, and when my 360 went about 9 months later, it only took me a half-hour to drive to Best Buy, hand in my cooked 360, and be back at home hooked up with my brand new unit...one that had the HDMI port and the new heatsinks.

Also keep the 360 in a well ventilated area so it doesn't overheat too much. and generally it only gets hot when there is a disc in it and the disc is running so...yeah. Anyways, I just bought Army of Two and I LOVE IT! It plays similarly to Gears but no aliens...:disappoin ! But it's an awesome game. Plus you have to get Halo 3, Bioshock, Blue Dragon, Mass Effect, and Lost Odyssey. Great Games! Also if you get Halo 3 and/or Army of Two and wanna play together, PM me with your Gamertag and we'll play.
