Id like to see about starting a thread where those who are fans of movie scores can come on and add in their favorites. From John Williams to James Horner, from Jerry Goldsmith to Danny Elfman, from Howard Shore to James Newton Howard, and those are only the beginning.

Music scores in films are one of my favorite aspects of movies, and I know Im not alone. From Star Wars to Laurence of Arabia, from Gone With The Wind to ET, from The Godfather to Rocky, Lord knows we all have our favorite Movie Music (Score) Themes, so lets hear from you ALL about any and all of your favorites (links included would be great), and who knows, a possible Rock Wars for this genre could also be set in the future as well. : )

For playing any of Sid Meier's Civ games, I've got to say, nothing tops the Hymn to Red October (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPsL2WVhFCc). And if you haven't picked up Peter Gabriel's Passion (OST for The Last Temptation of Christ), I can't recommend it enough. Standout track for me would have to be "A Different Drum" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJs-d-xh6WQ) (here paired with some Jessica Alba cheesecake shots). To add some multiculturalism in your day, check out this poorly-dubbed French version of the climax of Last of the Mohicans (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2376647701941859276&q=last+mohicans&total=419&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=1). I have a friend who took up the violin *just* so she could play a passable version of that song (she's since learned a few more).

I think my favourite is the theme of Lawrence of Arabia (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nE3Ar4iRgqI).

DTM
11/15/2007, 13:18
OK, so thoughts on this one, but do we want to concern ourselves with Main Themes only, or specific pieces and parts of music within each of the films (I know Lord Of The Rings has tons of great music, but not really a main theme, and even the classic SW Imperial March isnt a Main Theme to Star Wars, or the Love Theme from Superman, yet they are both pretty iconic themselves). So individual pieces or just Main Themes only, what do you say all?

charlesx
11/15/2007, 13:21
Good question. I listed complete soundtracks for overall effect. However, individual themes would probably be more specific (for example, I like the main theme of the "Flash Gordon" movie, but not necessarily the rest of the songs.)

DTM
11/15/2007, 13:30
Well, yeah, Im not necessarily looking for Entire Albums here, at first just Main Themes specifically, but because there are Alot of great non Main Themes to these classic films, I thought we should be "song" specific, with say no more than 4 or 5 per movie (or 3, whatever we all want). Though it would help to get specific youtube links for your non Main Theme ones, adding in Titles as well (which can be found on Amazon.com easily enough really).

What about songs from soundtracks?

If they're allowed;

In The Deep - Bird York (From Crash, essential viewing) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkxnrKotW4o)

To add to the instrumental themes here, I always liked the X-Men movies music too.

Any chance this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMOuIvbh9s4) would suffice for your Last Of The Mohicans pick, buddy? (just trying to get non dialogue or other sound effect clips if I can) And if so, any chance you could give me the actual "song title" for it?

Actually were more looking for orchestral, musical score, themes and music from movies, here. Though the X-Men films fit just fine, care to pick a favorite musical track from them, or are you just going for the default Main Theme approach?

Let me reach way back and give a nod to some of the scores of Erich Korngold.

The Sea Hawk
Adventures of Robin Hood
Captain Blood

Korngold was the John Williams of the 30s and 40s. When you heard his thrilling fanfares, you knew you were in for a fun ride.

And while I'm back in the old days, Max Steiner's score for the original King Kong was also well worth mentioning here.

Well, being someone beat me to Superman, Jaws and Halloween, I'll mention the other "Oh. Yeah! Them!"-scores. :)

Star Wars Main Theme (I'm looking for a good link)

The Imperial March (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tn_95hdy6Nw) (I would like to find a better link here too though the No Doubt version was tempting. )

Oh, and even though it's television, one of the best scores of all time:

Doctor Who (Murray Gold version to be "modern") (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02hh8_HAGyk) - I would rather find the closing credits (basically the extended version of the one I listed) and I was -this- close to putting in the soundtrack score for "Madame De Pompadour"

DTM

American Beauty (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDXjnW3nIWg&feature=related) (sorry, I couldn't find it without the dialogues... - I don't know if it's the main theme, and I don't know who the composer is either)

The Patrol Car (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3QcS2iovss) (Psycho - Bernard Herrmann)

Two guys I would have nominated are already on there. Max Steiner for Gone With the Wind and Howard "I'm really hard to work with" Shore.

I see no Mancini though. How do you leave off the guy who has 18 Oscar noms and two wins for best score.

Peter Gunn
Pink Panther
Breakfast at Tiffany's
The Thorn Birds
Victor/Victoria

Pirates of the Caribbean (Klaus Badelt) has a pretty decent soundtrack as does The Gangs of New York (Howard Shore).

I think were going more specific "songs" here TF, not just the overall score of each movie. If you can, feel free to post actual "song" titles and links to your favorite movie themes, and Ill be more than happy to add them in to our list. :)

I don't know if anyone has said this one, but I love the score from Napoleon Dynamite! The instrumental music is just classic material!

The composer is John Swihart and the soundtrack includes sound bites from the movie, instrumentals, and actual songs played during the movie. Here's the link:

Akira Ifukube's name may not be a familiar one, but to anyone who grew up watching Godzilla movies on Creature Double Feature on Saturday afternoons, his themes immediately are instantly recognizable
