Since Comic Books has it, why not real books?

I'll start:

What is the name of Sherlock Holmes' brother?

AlienFlanders

Mycroft Holmes

Correct, from The Greek Interpreter

Okay, from the Dark Tower series.

what is the name of The Gunslinger?

Darkseid Sr.
01/14/2008, 17:15
I haven't read any Stephen King since, like, Pet Cemetary.

AlienFlanders
01/14/2008, 17:25
Find a copy of The Gunslinger, the first book of the Dark Tower series, it is very small, a quick read, when I read the first part (published in an SF magazine) It never occurred to me that it was that King fellow.

Drunky
01/14/2008, 18:28
It's Roland, who hasn't forgot the name of his father.

AlienFlanders
01/14/2008, 18:30
And his fathers last name?

Drunky
01/14/2008, 18:32
Well, unlike Roland, I forgot :p.

It's been too long I've read it...

Deschain. One of my favorite King books, The Gunslinger, not Deschain.

Don't know if it is ok to post a question, but I will go ahead anyway. 4 characters always appear in Alice In Wonderland movies, but were never actually in the Alice in Wonderland book, can you name them?

AlienFlanders
01/14/2008, 23:07
You are correct Boosnickerty.

Boosnickerty
01/15/2008, 19:23
Thanks AlienFlanders, also on my question, I'll give anybody credit if they just get 2 of the 4.

01/15/2008, 21:38
It's been a long time since I read the book, but I can't recall any characters who show up in the movies who weren't in the book. Taking a totally wild guess I'll say Humpty Dumpty and the King of Hearts.

Boosnickerty
01/15/2008, 22:03
You got one of them right. They did show up in Through the Looking Glass, but that was a seperate book. They did not show up in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. I know alot of people think of these as girls books and they were written for girls, but if you ever actually read them, you'll find that they are pretty dark and not what you would expect. Disney and other movies prettied them up and took out all of the dark aspects.

CustomCreator
01/15/2008, 22:05
Oh, I see. Tweedledum and Tweedledee, perhaps?

AlienFlanders
01/15/2008, 23:10
The Walrus and the Carpenter maybe?

MattPetersen
01/15/2008, 23:14
I KNOW The Jabberwock is one of them for a definite!! (neat little tidbit....Jabberwock was set to appear in Disney's Alice but was cut. You can still see him in the Golden Book version of the story though :))

Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum were also in the 2nd book.

That should be all 4 counting Humpty Dumpty.

Boosnickerty
01/16/2008, 08:58
Congratulations to MattPeterson and CustomCreator. Tweedledee and Tweedledum, Humpty Dumpty and the Jabberwock were the 4. I'll leave it up to you guys to see who gets to leave the next question.:p

Phillip K. Dick has written NUMEROUS stories during his career. Many of them were made into TV episodes or movies. Unfortunately, the original titles of his stories were changed for the movies.

A Scanner Darkly and Minority Report are both works of Phllip K. Dick but NOT the answers I was looking for due to the fact that their titles were not changed. Good Work! Keep Trying. ;)

I guess I must get my fill from comics. I have tried to get into sci-fi and fantasy and some is great (Stuff like, Clarke, Tolkein, Gaiman, Vonnegut, Adams, Ellison and Robert Rankin), but most of it just doesn't appeal to me. Partly it is due to a lot of overly descriptive writers, and partly it is just because I would rather read 10 completely diferent books, by 10 completely different authors then get involved in reading an epic series.

I feel like that sometimes.
I get in moods where I don't want to read a novel, but a bunch of short stories will suit me fine. So I go and find an interesting Sci Fi or Fantasy anthology and I am good to go.
As a side, I have become VERY addicted to Young Adult literature (mostly fantasy and Sci Fi). Some of the novels and themes in those books are really good and I can read them quickly! Of course it helps that I am a 4th grade teacher so I can get my hands on a variety of them very easily.
Spiderwick Chronicles, Fablehaven, The Last Apprentice, The Extraordinary Adventures of Ordinary Boy (fun humorous book about kid superheroes), Tiffany Aching Discworld series by Terry Pratchett are all wonderful.
