Ok,

Time to see who wants in for this years league. I want enough lead time to shake out the bugs.

1st and foremost= No DH. I'm going to set it for two "utility" players and leave it at that.

2nd=wins for pitchers will go down from 10 points to 5, with a loss counting as -3 points.

And I'm scaling back this year. First 9 to respond with a team name is in for the next league. PM me your email address, team name, Real name; I'll send out invites.

1. Chicago Hitmen, Frontman
2. Star City Arrows, KitsuShel
3. Arkham Inmates, Jack Asserton
4. Doc's Minions, DocDoom187
5. The Real Deals, Darkseid Sr.
6. The Fighting Hippos, Gacy's Clown
7. Dave Marshak Ski Experience, lensart
8. The No Names, NAES72
9. Team SDMF, Charaxes
10. RCricket55
11. themike
12. loganspeedo,
13. Deltapi (as an alternate, determined if we get #14.)

I was wondering if there is any interest in also participating in a 12 person Roto Yahoo league?

It won't take THAT much time, and you should be able to play in both. I'd love it if Front joined to.

If there's any interest I'll start one up!

Last year's ESPN league got a bit wacky, so I'm using it as a roadmap of what NOT to do; with keeping the stuff that did work.

Last year's league is located here:

A few things I would suggest is to get rid of a few of the Batter categories, such as Sac, GWRBI, and DPT. These would reduce the points a little and bring the Batters a little bit more in line with the pitchers. You don't really want one being so much better than the other.
Example: Last season there were 5 Batters that scored over 700 pts and 20 that scored over 600.
As for Pitchers, only one scored over 700 and only three scored over 600...and this was with our Wins counting for 10 pts. a pop.

I know players don't score a great deal anyways with those three Batter categories I listed, but the rest of the stats seem worthwhile and the scoring seems fair for them.

Perhaps if those categories stay, the Total Bases category could be the one to remove, as it appears to be the one that gives these batters the biggest boost to their numbers (a Home Run would essentially score you 5 pts.) and just make a Home Run a flat number somewhere from 3-5 pts.

Any other thoughts/opinions?

Frontman

Yes, if a player is involved in a DPT, you gain a point for that as a defensive point. (Kinda would stink to give a batter credit for hitting into a DP.)

DocDoom187
01/17/2008, 19:24
This is just me, but this always seems balanced.

For batters, count Average, Walks, Total Bases, Runs, RBI's, Home Runs, and Stolen bases.

For pitchers count Wins, Losses, K's, IP, ERA, WHIP, and saves, and maybe holds if the league is big enough.

Nice and simple.

DocDoom187
01/17/2008, 19:25
Gacy, the problem with removing Total Bases is that if your player gets 5 triples in one game, he should get you more points than a player who gets you 5 singles.

DocDoom187
01/17/2008, 19:26
Also, we could easily solve all of this by making it Roto. I personally like roto a loooooooooooooooooooot more than H2H.

Front, is there any reason you are opposed to Roto? Are others out there? Would you guys be willing to give it a try?

I'm only opposed to it in the sense that it seems most leagues do Roto. This just gives us a different take on it.

What he said, Gacy. But I do see getting rid if SAC, especially since the batter still will get credit for a RBI.

Well, there's a reason most leagues do Roto. ;)

The reason I like Roto is because,

A)Points don't matter. Points are predetermined

B)Everyone has a chance. In H2H if you start of with 10 losses ,you're done for the season. But last year in Roto, I was last of 12 with 1 month left, and finished second. I think that's great. Plus, it's more of a community league since you compete against everyone at once.

It's my personal preference, by far. But if others oppose it I'll still play in a H2H.

DocDoom187
01/17/2008, 19:35
Also, Roto allows for a bigger league with less complications. That way everyone can still participate.

Frontman
01/17/2008, 19:41
Well, I'd still like to keep it H2H, as like I said, there's a boatload of options for Roto leagues. Also, I like the bit of smacktalk you can get with H2H.

DocDoom187
01/17/2008, 19:43
OKilee dokilee. Fine with me.

Like I said, if people want to also join a yahoo Roto, just contact me. Enough interest and I'll start one up.

But I'll gladly participate here, regardless of H2H or Roto

Very nice and a great idea!:)

I also prefer H2H over roto for the same reason BK mentioned. It's just extremely boring IMO. I totally forgot about the singles counting the same as triples thing too if you took out Total Bases, so my bad on that one.

i think the main requirement in this and any fantasy sports league is that members must be active all year long. I think Front and the rest of the teams deserve that commitment from all who sign up. To me that means checking your team at the very minimum twice per week. I would rather see less more dedicated teams in a league that a large who-gives-a-roody-poo league.

I am waiting to commit to this league until I can be sure I can devote thee attention to it that it and you all deserve.

I really hope that people heed this advice, it is no fun when you have no show losers. We had a few last year in this league and I had a couple in my football league that ended a few weeks back (I am looking at you NAES and Voltron Force) and it is always lame when you play them.

We should have some kind of contingency plan in case people are gone after draft day.

Do you understand how funny "no control over most of those hiccups" sounds?

Some of them, yes I could of done a bit better; but the ESPN 'screw da pooch' drops were bad.

Plus the whole idea that a DH had to play enough games as a DH to qualify as a DH was just plain moronic, imo.

There are still 3 teams that have not emailed me. If the teams that have signed up could update their team names in the league, I can figure out who is unaccounted for; and see if they are going to participate this season or not. Oh, one part I did a uni-lateral decision on was the "no trade/no drop" status of players.

Say, (God forbid) A-Rod tears out his knee, and is out the season, that should not mean that his owner should have to carry him on the DL/Bench for the entire season (or until ESPN gets its act together to de-activate him.)

The Cubs would of been fine this year, just wtih Dempster's comments. But when two separate players say the following phrases:

"We are going to win the World Series"

and

"I don't believe in curses."

Bad things happen to said teams. Millions of Cubs fans cried out suddenly when Fukudome (does anyone else think that's what he feels about playing baseball indoors?) said "I don't believe in curses."

Charaxes

I'm sure that the Cubs will win the Central (then again, that's really not an accomplishment) but they'll probably lose in the first round of the playoffs.

But then again, they play the games for a reason. No one ever thought that the Rockies would have made of the World Series last year, so I guess we'll just have to wait and find out.

Translation: I still like the Mets to come out of the NL. For Beltran's sake, I hope they at least win their division. 'Cause if they don't, the New Yorkers will eat him alive...

Draft lobby will open one hour early. With my experience, you can always sign in and then go do other stuff, just to make sure the java applett loads properly for you to do live drafting.

Also, double check over the rules (I noticed one after I set the league up, where we would of had more pitchers on the roster than actual players. I fixed that) and bring it to my attention, as I would like to have all bugs shaken out prior to the draft.

I changed my active roster for today yesterday. I had a hunch that Harden was going to pitch well today, so I picked him up. As soon as I picked him up, I modified my active for today so he would be started. However, ESPN did not pick up the move. However, it now says that I changed my active roster at 3:02 AM EST. I wasn't even awake at that time. So, now I'm out the twenty-something points that Harden picked up today.

Sorry for ranting, but today was a stressful day, and this just compounded it.

Boston/Oakland started this week in Japan. They played two games early, and get to travel back to take rest before the rest of the season starts.

Glad they dont have to play immediately. Jetlag would be the cause of a nice losing streak to start the season.

Hey now, besides Thome I don't think the Sox realize that the season has started yet.

That may be true, but the entire Tigers team has yet to realize the season has started.

It not even that they got swept by the Royals, they didnt even score at all. It is pretty bad when a team loaded up like that cant do anything against guys that would be 4th or 5th starters on other teams.

Really, really, bad.

Im not even a Tigers fan, and it still annoys me!

Well, the White Sox got their first win of the year last night, and manager Ozzie Guillen showed off his ability to create sound bites by telling the press that "we expected to win at least one game this year."

Tigers are now 0-4. It's not like the scored no runs at all during their series against the Royals. They scored five in three games. That, however, is second lowest run total in the league behind only the San Francisco Giants.

I was reading the Kansas City Star this afternoon, and there was a huge headline on the front page of the sports section detailing the sweep of Detroit. It's the only the sixth time in the forty year history of the Royals that they have swept their opening series, and the second time that they have swept the Tigers to open a season (the last time being in 1977). Anyway, the article was touting the great start the Royals are having, and it could be an indicator of what the rest of the season might hold for Kansas City. However, I envision yet another 100 loss season for the boys who wear royal blue.

Let's run it down:

Sheff: injury prone and a year older. Soon he'll be blaming his lack of playing time not on his broken body, but on Jim Leyland (as he did to Joe Torre.)

Mags: He ain't no spring chicken either. But, he should at least be doing better.

Miquel Cabrerra: Moved from AAAA ball to the real league. He now sees real pitching. He now is exposed.

Granderson: Ok, the cat's hurt. Can't really pile on there.

Renteria: no explanation there.

Pudge: once he got off the stu....erm, "dieted" he isn't as powerful as he once was.

Polanco: The guy is 34, on his way down. I just didn't think he'd go down that quickly.

I didn't realize until now but he has already eclipsed his total from last week, and he still has two more days. He might just be the first to 400 points this year as he still has four pitchers left; two today and two tomorrow. Heck, the way his team is going, he may make it to 500!

The baseball always finds you whenever you least want it to. Either in that sense or if you have already made four errors, and have resorted to praying that the ball wouldn't be hit to you anymore.

Glad Orlando Cabrerra remembered to wear his helmet. Dunno if it will make the national highlight reel, but that looked incredibly nasty.

And you could tell from the second Verlander released, he knew it was a dangerous pitch.

And that smeghead Ivan Rodriguez? He gets my nimrod of the week award. For him to try selling that the ball hit the bat and not the helmet was disgusting.

Did the pitch just get away from him, or do you think that it was revenge for Cabrera's home run that he hit in the third?

And I'm Surprised you had nothing to say about Floyd's one hitter through seven and a third innings pitched. Kinda harsh that he got pulled after allowing his first hit of the day to Renteria. Especially when considered that the hit he allowed was just a little bloop single.

Frontman
04/12/2008, 20:05
Floyd was at 104 pitches when Ozzie pulled him. As a young arm, Ozzie would of given him the whole game if it was a no-no; but once he gave up the hit, he didn't want to expose him to an injury (especially considering the conditions.) As far as not commenting on it? Oh man, I was completely pulling for the kid to do it. I like Floyd, I think he can be a very good dependable MLB starter. Today proves he's got the stuff. And considering he has now gone 5 games against the Tigers, with 4 of them just dominant, he's our Tigger killer.

As far as Verlander, no; that was a complete accident. First off, Verlander has never shown a history of it (and considering how the Sox always pound him, he would of plunked someone over the past few seasons if he was.) And you could tell this was a pitch that got away from him.

I figured as much but I wasn't 100% sure that was the case since I was not actually watching the game (I was going only by the box score).

Honestly, I probably would have played Sheets today. He has been pitching well as of late, and, as shown by today's outcome, any given team has a chance to beat any other.

Side Note: Miguel Cabrera (and his .167 BA) has officially been benched on my team. Kevin Kouzmanoff has now taken his place. Let's see just how that works out for me...

Nothing wrong in benching a player until they warm up (or heal up in Miggy's case).

I can't believe I didn't get Dunn. Well considering I have 12thwaiver priority, I can believe it, but it's disappointing.

Some of the transactions have surprized me a little. Dropping Sheffield, Pence, Dunn, Weaver, etc. etc. It is only a week and a half into the season.

I'll with Smokin', Stud of the Week, and Thunderstruck but I really don't think that signing Adam Dunn should be considered to be the best roster move as Dunn has yet to net any points for Harrington this week. Granted, it will be a great move in the future but it has yet to pay off. Instead, I nominate the Real Deals for signing Joe Crede.

Instead of Chris Young as Dud of the Week, I'd nominate C.C. Sabathia again. The guy is supposed to be the Indian ace but so negative twenty-three points for Frontman rather than Young's negative nineteen (also: Young isn't the ace of the staff).

I do think that a case can be made for Fausto receiving Overrated this week (eight walks in just over three innings! EIGHT!) but he he did give me positive points for the week. I really don't think that a player should be given a negative award for having one mediocre performance and one solid outing within the same week. Instead, I would like to nominate the Detroit Tigers. Yes, the entire team should win the award.

Also, I'd like to throw Ibanez into the discussion for Thunderstruck as he also had four home runs this week, and had more overall points than Pena. Stud of the Week could also very easily go to Lance Berkman, who had more total points than Pujols.

These are pretty fine numbers for the professor!

2-0 record, 12 IP, 5 total hits, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K's

That pretty good for a now end of the rotation guy. The numbers arent astounding, but solid enough for a nod.

I dont have room for all of them, considering I have 3 1B, and 3 extra outfielders.

I usually have to keep one really solid player benched.

So, if anyone has a spare infielder for trade, I have these guys up.

Conor Jackson is my third 1B, and has contributed well, but is permantly benched behind Morneau (Starter), and Youkilis (Utility). I would give him the other utility spot, but its hard to argue with what Justin Upton has done. If I do get rid of Upton, I wont be losing much with Jackson or Rowand.
