View Full Version : Motley thugs after hidden treasure--Game #2

I haven't forgotten about the Survivor: Skull Island game I had to call off early because of time issues. I'm trying to think of a way to make it more interactive and interesting before re-starting it.

In the meantime, this game has 10 slots open. First come, first serve for signing up. We'll always give players two days to post their intentions of the next round, in order to limit any unnecessary time pressures.

THE YEAR: 1877

THE PLACE: The Southwestern territoires of the United States

One of you has found a map to an ancient treasure--a cache of gold buried by Spanish conquistadors 2 centuries earlier. But to reach that gold, you must ride through untamed territories, battling outlaws, Apaches, desert heat and other dangers.

You gather together some of the worst scum and villiany of the Old West to help you obtain the treasure. But will you all be willing to share the treasure when you find it? Or will betrayal and murder follow your group during the journey?

HOW TO PLAY:

When you sign up, pick one of the following four catagories:

Gunman (+1 Fast-draw)
Mountain Man (+1 Sharpshooter)
Indian (+1 Knife Fight)
Gambler (+1 Cleverness)

Then divide 45 point among the following four attributes. Add your catagory bonus to the proper attribute:

Fast-draw
Sharpshooter
Knife Fight
Cleverness
Treachery

The game will last 10 rounds. Each round represents some danger your group encounters.

For instance: You're ambushed by Apaches and told you have to have a total of 50 Sharpshooter points and 30 Knife Fight points to fight them off. Each player then posts which of his attributes he is contributing to the fight.

For instance, Player #1 has 8 Sharpshooter and 6 Cleverness points. He may contribute one or the other--BUT NOT BOTH.

If you all contribute enough total points, you get past the danger without loss. If you don't, one RANDOMLY DETERMINED person is killed and out of the game.

TREACHERY: You may also PM me that you are secretly killing off one of your fellow treasure hunters. Your Treachery rating is added to a d10 die roll. The same is done with your intended victim. Ties are rerolled. If your number is higher, the victim is killed and no one else is told who killed him. If your intended victim has the high number, he puts a .45 slug between your eyes and it is you who is out of the game.

The treachery attempt takes place AFTER the results of dealing with that rounds threat is resolved.

LAST ROUND: If more than one of you is alive when the treasure is found, there is a free-for-all among the surviving players. It is randomly decided whether it is a gun fight or a knife fight. Then each player has his Treachery plus the appropriate attribute (Fast Draw or Knife Fight) plus a d10 roll added up. High number is the lone survivor and the winner of the game.

ANOTHER USE FOR TREACHERY: When posting which attribute you are using in a round, you may also post or PM me that you want to PERMENENTLY use one Treachery point to guarantee you will not be the randomly chosen victim if the group fails to defeat the danger.

Hope that all makes sense. Remember, first-come/first-serve for the 10 open slots.

I accidentally posted this thread in the Arena before I reposted here. I'm going to hold slots for Antipathy, theanalogkid and Sigdr--they posted over there and I want to give them a chance to post again here if they still want to play.

That leaves 2 open slots to go.

No. You can be as fast on the draw, as clever or as treacherous as you want.

ROUND ONE: The 12 of you meet in the small town of Bury Your Dead, Arizona, then ride out to find the lost treasure.

But the rich & ruthless owner of a nearby large ranch--the evil Ben Cartwright--also learns of the treasure. He sends his three psychotic sons (Adam, Hoss and Little Joe) along with a bunch of his ranch hands out to run you down, slaughter the lot of you and take the map for himself.

You must lure his men into an ambush within the walls of Begger's Canyon. To do so successfully, you must contribute a total of 55 Sharpshooter points and 83 Cleverness points.

Everyone has until Noon eastern time on Friday to post which of their attributes they are contributing. (Remember, you may use only one attribute at a time.) You may also PM me anytime before then about any attempts to backstab someone else.

There's quite a few folks here that have 10 Cleverness to give, that gave Sharpshooter instead. If you've got more than 7, you should use Cleverness. If you've got more than 10 Sharpshooter, you should use Sharpshooter.

Well, y'all done given those Cartwright boys a fatal dose of lead, blasting them down as they ride into Begger's Canyon.

But treachery has struck!!! When the gunsmoke clears, two of you have been shot in the back!!!! And their respective killers manage to do away with them without being noticed!!!

KitsuShel and maniac nmt are the victims. You leave their bodies behind ("Buzzards gotta eat--same as worms") and ride off to find the treasure.

ROUND 2: Your last stop before entering the desert is the stagecoach stop at Hangman's Bluff. You all spend the night here, but one of you accidentally bumps into the infamous Waco Kid, causing him to spill his whiskey. An unavoidable gunfight results.

The Waco Kid has a Fast Draw score of 18. A d10 will be rolled and added to his score. The same will be done for his opponent. Ties will be rerolled.

High score wins and lives. Low score loses and dies. If the player fighting the Waco wins, he gets 1 point permenently added to his Fast Draw.

But which of you must fight him? This is randomly determined. But any of you may permenently spend 1 Treachery Point to be exempt from the fight.

So the only decision for each of you to make this time is whether to spend a treachery point to hide from the Waco Kid--or take a chance on fighting him.

WARNING: If all of you spend a treachery point, then the whole process loops around and you all go back on the list of possible opponents.

Round 4:

You continue on over the desert. Soon, you realize that the slain Apaches have been found by their friends. Now a band of at least 50 warriors, led by Geronimo himself, is pursuing you.

Your only chance is for one of you to hang back and pick off Geronimo, thus discouraging the rest of the Apaches.

So one of you must volunteer to take the role as sniper. Then he must make a score of at least 16 by adding his Sharpshooter points to a d10 roll. On a roll of 1, he misses the shot even if his score is overwise high enough, so there is no absolute guarentee.

If he misses the shot, he is automatically killed, but the others getaway safely while the Apaches are torturing him to death.

If he hits, the others are saved, but there is a 25% chance a couple of angry Apaches will still charge forward and scalp the hunter.

If no one volunteers, then a massive fight with the Apaches occurs. One of you (randomly determined) will be killed. There will be a 25% chance of a second randomly determined person getting killed also.

If more than one person volunteers, the actual sniper will be randomly chosen from among the volunteers.

The sniper--if he lives--gets a permenent +1 to the attribute of his choice.

Naw lissen here young'un.

The way I hear the story told I only need to shoot a 16 - and old Geronimo don't get to fire back. I git my natural sharpshooter of 15 plus a D10 roll. So at the bare minimum I'll get 16 (15 +1 on a 1d10 roll). Of course if I roll a one, I'm out for sure, so it don't matter none. But I should be able to do it. Unless I'm reading it wrong. Round 6: Close to the gold--but not there yet. A complex trap involving a pit, sharpened stakes, a swinging pendulum, a hoarde of black widow spiders and Joe Quesada is set just inside the cave entrance.

Round 8: You come to a steep wall. You can climb it, but only by using your knives to cut hand- and foot- holds. This will ever so slightly bend and dull your knife.

If you permenently sacrifice 1 Knife Fight point, you are guarenteed to make it to the top.

If you take your chances, there is a 20% chance you will plunge to your death.

Remember, though, that Knife Fighting might be the required skill needed to beat your opponent once you get to the gold.

I wouldn't mind seeing some kind of a twist to the Midnight backstabbing...

Like if the person being Backstabbed could choose an ability to defend with

They wouldn't necessarily know who was making the attempt on them (in the dark and all) but could choose their strong suit.

Something like that may have helped Thawmus a lot.

Doombot 3.1

Speaking of which, who targetted who in the wee hours of the night?

Well, I killed Thawmus.

After Kit and Maniac (both of whom had high fast-draw scores, but not as high as Thawmus) were killed, I figured that someone was going after gunmen. They probably left Thawmus alone, figuring that his high fast draw score would be useful and that they could kill him on the last night.

Unfortunately, that left me high on the list of targets. I didn't know who was going after the gunmen, and even if I did, it's possible that my treachery score wasn't high enough to take them down.

So I figured killing Thawmus would improve my chances. I'd have the highest fast draw score, so there'd be a chance that I'd be left alone in case future challenges required fast draw. And if someone killed me, well, at least I'd make those future fast draw challenges a lot tougher for them without Thawmus.

Kalel21
02/07/2008, 15:00
I wonder if I could make the decision of whether to backstab someone a little more interesting.

What if the players pick which skills they have, but don't have to assign points. You either have a skill or you don't.

Then, when you meet a challenge, you have a base 50% chance of defeating it without someone getting killed. Each person who can donate an applicable skill would up the chance of success by 5% or 10%.

That way, every time you backstab someone, you always reduce the chances of defeating the next challenge.

Hows that sound? Or should I keep things the way they are?

Yeah, as I watched the game progress, I realized the strategy behind that. SOMEONE was going to have to kill me at some point, because my fast-draw was dangerously high for end-game. The highest end game score to roll with was an 18 for knife fighting. So in order to open themselves up so they could attack OTHER people later in the game, I was gonna have to go early.

And then when I realized that their challenges would always be meetable, regardless of how many people were alive, I realized my stats weren't really sound for this game in the first place. Nobody ever needed my fast-draw stats, so my whole strategy of making myself a valuable resource, was stupid.

No big deal, I figured it out. ;)

You could try something like that.

I'm not sure what a good system would be.

The current system seems a bit broken, though. What's to stop someone from loading themselves up with 50 treachery points, and not have anything elsewhere? The challenges were always meetable, so they'd never have anything to fear.

That's fixable by just putting a cap on the number of Treachery points you are allowed to give yourself. If I stick with the point system, I'll do that.

I could also keep the point system, but make it so the challenges aren't always meetable. I could plot out in advance just how many points from specific attributes are needed to advance without a loss. That way, if enough guys are killed, you could all suddenly slam into a challenge you can't meet.

I could add the option to every round of spending an attribute point of some sort to make sure you aren't the person killed.

How's that sound?

Kalel21
02/07/2008, 18:03
How about this:

The challenges are always meetable, but for each person already killed, there is a cumulative 5% chance of someone else getting killed even if the challenge is met.

theanalogkid

Doombot 3.1

I think the challenges shouldn't always be meetable.

The point of the game is to balance cooperating to achieve a common goal against backstabbing other players for your own advantage. If there's a real possibility that doing away with another player will have real consequences for the group as a whole, you get more tension between the the competing values of common good/selfish advantage, and that makes the game more interesting.

Kalel21
02/07/2008, 18:32
Okay, right now I'm planning on modifying the game as follows:

There will be a cap on the number of points that can be initially assigned to Treachery

All challenges will be meetable in terms of assigning the required points, but there will be a cumulative 5% chance for each person killed of failing the challenge regardless. That means there will be consequences to backstabbing your comrades.

Since the next one is science fiction, I'm thinking about giving everyone a personal scanner that guards against backstabbing, but only has a limited amount of power. I'm not sure how the exact mechanics of this will work, but if I come up with a good idea, I'll use it.

I'm still open to input on whether these are good ideas.

I posted before I saw your post.

If the challenges aren't always meetable, then I have to plan them all out in advance, assigning the number of points needed to make the goal. This is no problem.

The danger, though, is that there might come a point late in the game where the challenges are NEVER meetable and the group is doomed no matter what they do. If I can come up with a way to avoid this, then the idea of not having all the challenges meetable becomes more practical.

Kal, I think you HAVE to make it that way, actually. There has to be a point where, if there are too many deaths, nobody's going to win. Otherwise people will be content with the bare minimum, as they were in this game. If there has to be a game where this happens, it may be enough to tip the balance back to cooperation.

Sometimes you have to break a few eggs, and all that. ;)

What about the idea of having all the challenges meetable in terms of assigning points, BUT having a cumulative 5% chance of losing a challenge for each person killed? This would make backstabbing riskier, but also mean there is always a motivation for cooperating.

Obviously, I'm still leaning towards doing it this way.
