I'm an avid lover of maps. I find that the right map can make even a risky team viable.
So when I eye up the theme team options, I keep finding myself going back to teams I'd never gotten to run before due to an inherent flaw.
Last night, I went 3-0 with a Warrior team of Zauriel, Silver Savage, and Shatterstar (Pounce on Sh. and Warbound on the whole team). I kept winning the map roll, and set us out in space, where they couldn't draw LOS/LOF to Zauriel, but he could charge them.
Now, a small disclaimer, we houserule BFC ignoring to be instead, "Once per tournament, you may cancel all BFCs for this round". So, I understand the abuse that can come of ignoring a BFC. But I feel that map choice is underappreciated, and that the ability to choose map most games with a theme team is incredibly potent.
Anyone else feel the same? Wanna argue? Whatever? Let's hear it!

I think map choice is a far second to being able to ignore a BFC, especially every round. I really feel the need to limit it to ignoring a BFC once per tourny. Map choice isn't that big in these events right now unless your venue is low on the new maps then you might have to choose between the arena or the new york map. But I think in the future it will get a little close to ignoring BFC.

While a powerful ability when you can actually select maps, I still believe the ability to ignore a BFC is still the strongest advantage of the theme teams.

Map choice is powerful, however it is not something you can necessarily rely upon. An opponent playing a theme team with more figures than you, for example, has a decent chance of denying you of this advantage. Also, having not many more figures than your opponents still keeps your chance of not getting map choice well within the realm of possibility.

Ignoring BFCs is an ability that you pretty much will always benefit from, regardless of what your opponent is playing. It is rare to come across a BFC that does not harm you in some fashion and thus ignoring a BFC will benefit you more often.

True, and I don't think I'm arguing that it's better than BFCs as much as trying to bring an awareness to the power that map choice brings. I don't think I've played a match yet where the other person didn't go, "I don't care what map, we can roll if you want but whatever is fine." People seem to not care about that end until they're stuck in Prison or Space and can't get their long range to work.

Oh I definately agree map choice will have a huge effect upon the game, especially given how different these maps are. I played a completely different Floor teams during Stage 1 of the Mutations Organized Play events than I've been playing in Stage 2 because the two maps are so different.

I just think the BFC ignoring ability of theme teams is more powerful.

Well, when you nerf one rule, another is sure to take its place.

The right map choice can win the game. :)

I think map choice is a HUGE factor in theme teams. I know that the difference between choosing the Arena Map and the City Street Map in the Week 9 event of Planet Hulk versus 2 Batman figures plus others was a HUGE advantage in my eyes!!
It CAN and DOES sway games.

It may not be AS IMPORTANT as ignoring a BFC to most, but I still think its a big deal!
