I know that I'm not the only D&D player here that will be saddened by the news of Gary Gygax's passing.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Thank you for a game that I've played for over 20 years.

Gary Gygax has finally gone home to the World of Greyhawk. His adventure has only just begun. Rest well, GG, and may Zagyg speed you on your way.

Since we all play a tabletop game and I'm certain most of us cross over into RPGS like Dungeons & Dragons, etc., it's definitely worth noting that Gary Gygax, the co-founder of D&D, has died today:

Thats sad to hear. How cool would it have been to play in that weekly D&D game he hosted at his house? Let us hope he went to the good Outer plane of his choice.

I run RPG games since I was 14. I was born in 74 and I always felt (I know, it sounds dumb) connected to RPGs even more coz of that. This is a sad day.

R. I. P. Gary Gygax. It is because of him that I can fight the boredom of everyday life...with a little help from Heroclix. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. I guess you can say that he leveled up and is now at the Epic levels. Fight hard Gary and Thank you.

No need. Gary is on the first adventure he's been on in a long time that he doesn't know what's beyond the next door.

And I'm sure he's loving it.

Nice one.

Yeah long before I got into HC, I was always playing in some RPG.

Sorry to see him go. Fantasy RPG games just won't be the same any more.

D&D got me into gaming at age 10. Undoubtedly, Gygax was the most influental celebrity in my life.

Similarly, I started playing D&D at age 9. Still have that original purplish box and all the dice.

Gaming has been a part of my life since my 9th birthday, whether it's D&D, Shadowrun, MTG, Heroclix, or any of a few dozen also-ran's that I've played during that time. Nearly all of my friends have come in and out of my life as a result of the games that I've played.

I met Gary Gygax at a Gen Con a few years ago. Very nice guy.

Dungeons and Dragons molded my life more than anything else. Goodbye Gary, and thanks a whole bunch.

I think the most notable thing I can say about him is this:

At a little over 40 years old, my oldest friends that I still keep in touch with, I met playing D&D. That includes my best man, and a lot of other close friends that I've had for 25+ years.

For those who have met Gary, I'm sure you all will appreciate this joke from my "You might be a Game Geek" standup routine. Gary definately got a laugh out of it:

"If you can be shown pictures of Gary Gygax and Jerry Garcia and can tell who is who; you might be a game geek."

followed up by

"If you found that last joke funny and knew what I was talking about, you might be a game geek."

I remember his words that he told a young man who was facing the greatest danger of his life: "Here, take my +1 mace"

What you started grew well beyond you, for good and, occasionally, bad.

But, to paraphrase Newton, if we have seen further, it is because we have stood on the backs of giants. Or at least kicked the butt of them in the Giants series of modules.

And I think Gary would have appreciated the humour of leaving this world on March 4th (march forth)

His creation changed my life.

Thanks, Gary! RIP.

Mine too. Without the creative escapism his invention provided for us, my friends and I would have been crushed into souless industrial automatons by the public school system.

Thanks Gary, you made life bearable !
Hope you enjoy the afterlife.

but yes i also started roleplaying at the age of 8, and have formed some truly great friendships thru the years because of it. most of that in my early years with my brother who is only 9 months and one day younger than i am. he called me this evening to let me know and i think we were both really, truly saddened. thank god for what hes contributed, and all that has come from it.

Man, I think God is a little pissed at Wisconsin right now. First Favre retires, and now Gygax. I think, as a whole, all of the people of Wisconsin should head up to Canada to hide out until this vendetta against the cheese state is done.

Sucks that Gygax died, though. I didn't get into the D&D until just before 3.5 came out, but it was one a continuation of his old campaign setting (Greyhawk) that I got to play through RPGA that made me continue.

March 4 is GM's Day, how fitting that Gary would pass on that date.

There are proposals to to either rename GM's Day Gygax Day, or make July 27, his birthday, Gygax Day.

We few, we happy few, we band of brothers, for he who games with me this day shall be my brother, be he ne'er so vile, this day shall gentle his condition, and gamers not playing today will hold themselves accursed and hold their gamerhoods cheap, whilst any speaks, who gamed with us on Gygyx's Day!

Gamers can go to the messageboards at www.enworld.org to share more testimonals about the life and works of Gary Gygax. You can also browse through the several Gary Gygax Q&A threads there, where Gary regularly participated under the screen name Col Pladoh.

I didn't hear about his death until today. It was kinda sad. It wasn't in any of the major news media. I came across it in Google news. Which is kinda funny, because Google is a geeky...site.

I don't play D&D, but I do know Gary Gygax, and his importance. You're not a real geek unless you know of Gary Gygax.

Speaking of D&D, has anyone heard of the D&D parody that was made in the 90s? It's a sound file that starts with:
See Dungeons and Dragons D&D

"Dungeons and Dragons, Satan's game. Your children, like it or not, are attracted in their weaker years to the occult, and a game like DnD fuels their imagination and makes them feel special while drawing them deeper and deeper into the bowels of El Diablo."

"This afternoon the dead alewives watch tower invites you to sit in on an actual gaming session. Observe the previously unobservable as a hidden camera takes you to the inner sanctum of Dungeons and Dragons."

If you guys Google around for it, you might find it. It's really funny....and true. MAGIC MISSILE!

Yes. Yes it is.

This truly is a sad day. I told some friends earlier today, it feels like the beginning of the end of an era. I do have to say though, it's good to see so many posts here and elsewhere from people who were so profoundly affected by Gary's creations. Any of us would be so lucky to leave even half such a legacy.

I once drove from the western suburbs of Chicago to Lake Geneva to

a) visit the "corporate" address of TSR Hobbies, and
b) buy Leinenkugels

...that was not the only quest the man set me upon, but it was among the most memorable.

I know this thread is about Gary, but I wanted to let you all know that another really great guy in gaming passed this week.

Barron Vangor Toth, who was one of the creators of WWE Raw Deal, passed this past weekend from cancer. He was 34. I knew Barron a lot better than I did Gary, as Barron provided me with a ton of support as I got Raw Deal going at 3D House of Games (and bear with me on this one)RIGHT HERE IN MOKENA ILLINOIS! Matter of fact, Barron provided me with some uncut promo sheets, including the last of the uncut playtest cards from the original print run. And even after I left Raw Deal, he was always kind. He always asked about my wife and my son, what was I doing, what figures I was painting, etc.

I'm going to miss my friend.

Heathcliff

Sorry to hear that, Frontman. My condolences to you and his family and friends. Raw Deal was a fun game, I really should break my old cards out and challenge Carja74 for a match.

I'm taking the opposite tack. I'm probably going to get some new players into the fold with a 3rd Ed. campaign here soon. Gygax's passing seems a fitting excuse to start anew.

If there are more gamers to go around, maybe the reaper will pass me by and take one of them instead.

It was one of those moments when I found out that he died just before "Clix for the Cure" Groovy. He probably got to watch the wackiness, as he would appreciate you and Duane's sense of humor.

Here we were, playing for cancer research, and he dies of cancer (of a different kind, mind you.)

Another reason to get Breast Cancer KOed, as we can then turn our attention elsewhere and help.

For the kind words, gang. Thanks. Barron was a great guy, and I hope and pray that since he's no longer in pain (which from what I understand, at the end he was pretty bad off) that his passing is easier for his close friends and family.

You know, when I think about it, I became interested in miniatures by playing D&D. I have many good memories of gaming, using the old lead Ral Partha minis. Briefly, I guess this prepped me embracing for Heroclix.

So yeah, Gary Gygax's legacy spans genres and generations. Without a doubt, he is the grand daddy of roleplaying.

That's when I do sound "old school" when I get on the rant.

"Why, back when I started miniature games, I had to paint all of them. Gard darln kids these days. So what if Superman's eyes aren't painted right. Go try doin' it yourself before you complain, you crazy kids."

And to think, D&D really was spawned off of miniature games way back in the day.
