In no particular order...
Snake
Sonic
Kirby
Pit
Meta Knight
What about you guys?
It's hard to choose just five as I make it a rule to play on random in vs mode to keep the challenge up and because it's fun learning all the characters. If I have to narrow it down though, I'd say:
Marth
Peach
Mario
Wolf
Pokémon Trainer (mostly Squirtle)

Yea, I really like Squirtle the most, too.
I use Squirtle to really get them high in damage, then I switch to Charizard for one powerful final blow.
But Mario? i've never seen him used successfully. Interesting choice.

Meta Knight, then Wario, then Captain Falcon, then a tie between Pokemon Trainer and Luigi.

QFT. Squirtle is such a little f'er to even catch. Ivysaur is quite the beatstick too. The Trainer is just plain good.
I don't have a top 5 yet, but I think Snake will be on it. People dissed him at first, but that's because he plays so differently.
I dread facing Metaknight. I think he's due to be #1.
Pit is a pain to finish off too.

Zero Suit Samus
Link
Samus
Marth
Pit
Zero Suit Samus isn't my best, but she is my favorite and will be my best pretty soon. She's amazing in aerial combat, and her Up+A is the best in the game.
Link is my best. He's the best overall character, if you ask me. Fast enough, has good range, and certainly powerful as well as having a very wide range of attacks.
Samus was my best in Melee. Using her fully charged Beam in close combat is great, and using Missiles to make your opponents come to you and bring up their damage is quite effective. Her down A is very fast and very powerful, as well.
Marth is just plain solid in every area. Good counter attack, good recovery move, good power, and his Side+B is a lot easier to pull off this time around.
Pit might be the best in the game for most players, but I just don't like him as much. He's certainly very good, and a pain in the butt to knock off.

That is my one complaint with Wolf. I hate how it always rises, I very oftenly just miss people, and it annoys the heck out of me.
But he;s powerful and fast. Rely more on his A moves then his B moves

I just love playing Snake on Hyrule, and putting Down A Mines all over the place, and then puting a down B mine right where you're standing.
They'll either walk on your down A mines ,or theyll think they're clever, come to you, and then you can detonate the down B mine.
Hyrule was like made for Snake. It's so easy to hide and use the remote controlled Rocket thing. Then when they come close, smash attack themn like crazy!
And I've been playing the Ice Climbers a lot lately, and they kick ###. Wow. They went from unplayable to stars. I beat 3 level 9 CPU's all on one team aainst me, as the Ice Climbers....
and Sonic is really hard to use well, but i'm practicing a lot with him, and I'm getting pretty good. He's alot of fun, insanely fast, and very unpredictable.

But Mario? i've never seen him used successfully. Interesting choice.
Mario has more strength then people expect, and one use of his cape can totally throw people off. I usually use him in higher lever games though as he seems to be the one weakness of some of the better players I know. When you start beating a guy who's won citywide tournaments with the guy, you start to earn more respect for the plumber.
Link is my best. He's the best overall character, if you ask me.
I hate to be one of those people, but you should really clean up your spelling here. You spelled "Link" instead of "Marth". Common mistake, don't worry about it :p

Snake has the best smash moves in the game. The best way to play him is a regular up attack, then up smash and it sends people flying. I beat All star mode with him in less than 8 minutes without dying.
For those who dont like Wolf, I can understand. He is very different from Falco and Fox. Where those two are about speed, Wolf is about timing. This is how i play him.
First, keep pressure on people with the Blaster. Its slow, but it deals more damage. If someone gets close, use an Up smash to knock them up. The use a left or Right special to fly into them. This knocks them up even further. This is where it gets tricky. Try to jump above the person and perfrom an arial down smash attack. If done right, Wolf repeatedly kicks them and then knocks them to the ground. If they already have high damage, then they bounce up off the ground. A well timed grab or side smash will send them flying.

He's slow as hell, but he makes up for it by having a bunch of mobile attacks.

I gotta unlock Gannondorf, but currently I use Lucario when I can. He is Mewtwo, but better. Mewtwo was my fave in Melee.I disagree. Mewtwo should have made a return to Brawl in my opinion. His up-B move was the best recovery-avoidence move ever seen in any of the games. He would turn invisible, become un-hittable and get some nasty air all at the same time....just ridiculous. You didn't even have to crank out the most kills most of the time, you could just out live your opponents with Mewtwo... Sad to see him gone :(
MY TOP FIVE:
1. Link- Yes they nerfed him a bit, but if you are skilled enough you can still make him the most effective guy in the game. HINT: Use his boomerang more and you'll see what I'm talking about.
2. Gannondorf- There is something to be said for pure power, and old Gannon has it in spades. HINT: Jump back and up and immediately hit B while falling, if timed right your unsuspecting opponent is gonna get a beat down...
3. Marth- Marth was acutally my favorite character in Melee when I needed to get a win, I was amazing with him. I'm still good with Marth, but they nerfed him a bit. He's a bit slower now and has no rapid sword attack like in melee. BUT, he does HAVE a sword which apparently makes all characters better. Marth is still awesome as long as you know how to use him, plus I like his Dancing Blades and Charge-B move better now.
4. Pit- Pit has alot going for him, unfortunatly all the noobs in the world online like him for one move, that spinning blade attack that never ends...look, if all you like to do is one attack, get Donkey Kong, don't disgrace Pit with your 0 kills and 6 deaths just so you can look at the pretty spinning blades....:tired::rolleyes: Anyway, more flight than Kirby so ya...
5. Snake/Samus - I couldn't chose just one (if you want to be technical I'd pick Samus) but they are the kings of range and sneaky fighting. Samus, contrary to popular belief, STILL has heat seeking missiles..and her super missle seems to pack more of a punch. Her charge beam is as deadly as ever. Snake is as others have said, slow but deadly. His up-B recovery really sucks if you aren't already on your way up though. But his mines and especially his forward-A smash are particularly nasty. I've won lots of online matches with these people.
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
6. Wario- would probably be top 5 if he had better air time, he has lots of power in close range and his bike is just brutal if you know how to use it (I do ) Eat his bike 3-4 times and you become able to perform the most awesome move of all, the FULLY CHARGED WARIO WAFT!!
7. Bowser- Again, PURE POWER, Bowser is just nasty. Land a few hits and the opponent is dead...problem is he's so slow you'll have trouble landing hits on the Sonics, Starfox's and Captain Falcons of the world.
8. Metaknight- Again, TOO NOOB-Friendly with his plethora of easy to perform spin attacks, but the real strategy is his ability to survive and dishout quick damage. His special is pretty sick too.
9. Ice Climbers- Would be higher on the list but I don't like them much. They are devastating if you know how to use them, but I just feel wrong beating people down with 5 year olds...Also I hate their special, as they are called Ice Climers but they can't even stay on their own mountain...
10. Captain Falcon- Again, would be higher but he's basically a Gannondorf-light. Not as powerful as Gannon but loads faster. Still, hes one of my faves from the Original SB and his Falcon Punch still brings death to those foolish enough to stand there and take it.
STILL OTHERS:
Ness/Lucas, Donkey Kong, Luigi, Starfox/Falco, Mr Game and Watch and many others are still very capable of laying the beatdown, but I just like the ones above better.

May i ask how you use Wolf?
I tried him out but I can't seem to get the hang of him especially sicne his dash attack goes UP i can never hit anybody with it.
Wolf is great, but the first thing you have to know about him is that he does not play like Falco or Wolf at _all_, despite first appearances.
His sideB, which I assume you're referring to, is there for smoking people on higher platforms. The angle of the attack takes a little while to get used to, but it's a deadly addition to his arsenal. It may be a lot more situational, but that's the thing - people will be ready to defend against attacks coming from the same level as them, or directly above or below. People generally do not expect Wolf's dash. Use it sparingly though, or it will lose its element of surprise, you'll miss and get punished.
If you're referring to his dashing A, it's great to fake people out with. The attack itself has decent horizontal range, but you have to remember to use it exactly when you want to hit, since you can't slide into enemies with it. The reason I say it's great for faking people out is if you attack at the right time, whether you hit them or they shield/dodge, you won't be right in their face as most dash-attacking characters would. Most importantly, this means you don't get shieldgrabbed.
As for playing Wolf in general, he's a melee bruiser. Feel free to harass people with his blaster if they don't have any projectiles (Ganondorf), but really, Wolf is made for getting in peoples' faces, beating them up with a combination of grounds and arials (all are good with Wolf, use them) and finishing them with his ridiculous sideSmash. That thing has great power and speed and fabulous horizontal range, use it a lot because it's your main kill move.
Speaking of his blaster, don't be afraid to whip it out in someone's face. If you do, it does extra damage and knocks them back a little, just into the range where you can sideSmash them but they (depending on the character) may not be able to hit back.
I also advocate using his upB as an attack. It comes out much faster than Fox's or Falco's, and racks up damage nicely. It is not in any way a finisher though.
If you're used to using Fox or Falco, things to keep in mind when using Wolf include:
Wolf's shine does not launch people. It's there for taking pressure off, not for setting up juggles.
Wolf is not a speed demon, nor can he hit and run.
Wolf does not fall as quickly, adjust your timing.
Wolf's sideB, as we all know, is extremely different in its use. Don't get confused.
Anyway, as you may be able to tell, Wolf is definitely in my Top 5 characters. The rest of my Top 5 include:
R.O.B.
Olimar
Pit
Lucas

Zero Suit Samus has officially become my favorite and best character.
She plays very very differently than any other character, but once you learn how to play her, she's amazing.
My favorite advantages, and those that you should use if you decide to pick up and play with her:
She has amazing reach. Seriously, use this a lot. Her Side+B has great reach, deals out good damage, and launches them a good distance. Her Side+A is pretty good, too, just not as good. She has, in my opinion, the best Up+A in the game and it has great reach. Unless your opponent is Link, they won't get the first hit and even sometimes Link doesn't get the first hit even with his aerial Down+A. Her grab also has good reach, which allows you to dish out some surprise damage whenever your opponent is expecting an attack so they put up their shield. Then just for kicks you have her Up+B, which is an amazing recovery move as well as good for stopping your opponents in mid-air, getting smash balls, and bringing them down to you for a beat down. Good combination: when an opponent is above you, Up+B to bring them down right next to you, then Down+A to stun them, then Side+B to send them flying and deal out a lot of damage.
Her stun is great. It may not be long ranged, but in a game that is dependent upon timing, a quick stun from a few feet away is very crucial. If you can pull it off, her Down+A is an even better stun that gives off a lot of damage and keeps them stunned for a very long time.
She starts with items to throw, and these items do a lot of damage. She starts with 3 items, and each one does 11 to 14 damage, and has very good launch distance. These are just for harassing your opponent early, giving you some good range for a little bit to rack up damage and give you an opportunity to close in on them. Love those things.
She's very fast. Almost all of her attacks are quick and recover quickly, and she moves on the ground very quickly as well. She dodges quickly, and using her speed and quickness to stay alive is key.
Lastly, she has absolutely GREAT aerial attacks. Her Up+A in the air is absolutely stunning. It's my favorite KO move, even moreso than her Side+B. Her backwards Side+A is maybe more powerful, but harder to pull off. Her forwards Side+A is solid, but hard to pull off the full combo. However, if you do it does a lot of damage and sends them flying. Her neutral A is great, as it attacks both behind her and in front, does decent damage, and has decent knockback. Her Up+B also lets her get back to the stage safely and easily, which is very useful. To top it all off, her Down+A in the air is great for dealing out decent damage and getting your opponent by surprise as well as knocking them into the air. It's quite hard for your opponent to block, as it's very quick. Her great aerial combat allows you to grab and throw up to put your opponent in the air, thus giving you a clear advantage.
Unfortunately, she does have a few setbacks (as do all characters):
Her lack of range is a problem. It means opponents can give you damage from afar fairly easily, so that if they manage to land a smash attack by the time you get in close it's going to launch you a good distance already. This isn't too much of a big deal, but it is a problem.
She's light. Against foes like Ike, Bowser, and Ganondorf she can get sent flying easily and with low damage. If you aren't good at dodging, you should not use her at all. She relies completely on speed and the ability to get back to the stage to keep her alive. She isn't the lightest, but she is pretty light.
She doesn't have great ground damage. Her Side+A deals out 11 damage if uncharged, which isn't too good for a smash attack. It doesn't send the person flying all the time because it depends where you hit them along your whip. Her only good ground finisher is her Side+B, which is great but doesn't give her many options. Her Side+A can take people out, but not without them being past the hundreds in damage.

1. Mr. Game and Watch
He is so underestimated. I was facing both Samus and Lucario a lot, and nothing feels better than catching three full power blasts with the bucket and throwing it back in thier face. He has two instant kills, they just take a little manuevering. Thanks to his parachute, he has has that ability to manuever. Throw in the solid down A and meteor smash, and you got yourself a spicey meatball. All of that, AND a giant squid? Wonderful.
2. Toon Link
Just the right mix of speed and power for my play style. Just a fun style.
3. Metaknight
Can really dole out the damage, but I have a little bit of trouble finishing with him. I've only played the game twice, so I'm pretty sure I'd get the hang of it, but for now, he's number 3.
4. Pokemon Trainer
Squirtle is a speedy little freak, who can hit and run. Ivysaur has great range. Charizard can finish like no one business. I just don't like that when one is KOed it moves onto the next.
5. Zerosuit Samus
I don't normally go for blondes, but what can I say? Speed and long range smash moves, as well as good recovery finds her in my #5 slot.

Mewtwo should have made a return to Brawl in my opinion.
That's the whole reason I absolutely refuse to play as Lucario. What were they thinking replacing Mewtwo with that wannabe? And making him better, no less?
As far as my own character, I don't have a list or anything, but I do have characters I enjoy playing as, which consists of character I think I'm good with, and characters I'd like to be good with.
List one consists of:
ROB - Which has amazed me. Not what I was expecting at all.
Donkey Kong - I'm loving his side-neutral combo. Devistating if it can be pulled off.
Sonic - I'm a bit more iffy on him, but I haven't found him quite as difficult to handle as I've heard people talk about.
Meta Knight - again, a more iffy one. But his swordplay is awsome.
List two consists of a large part of the rest of the characters, with the notable exceptions of Wolf, Ike, Marth, Toon Link, Link, Zelda, Lucas, Ness, Marth, and Lucario.

Lucario is Steel/Fighting. And while he may serve as a replacement for Mewtwo, I have used him to a much greater effect than the original.
The only thing that Mewtwo and Lucario share in common that is at all unique is that they're both the star of a Pokémon movie. Mewtwo's movie was new when Melee came out, Lucario's is new with Brawl's release. It's as simple as that as to how either made it into the game.

The only thing that Mewtwo and Lucario share in common that is at all unique is that they're both the star of a Pokémon movie. Mewtwo's movie was new when Melee came out, Lucario's is new with Brawl's release. It's as simple as that as to how either made it into the game.
Well I haven't played any of the new Pokemans, but Lucario having purple fire makes me sad. At least make it green or something. :(

The updated dread list of computer foes that beat me:
Toon Link: Fast and decently powerful. His only drawback is his slow grapple.
Pit: He is impossible to kill sometimes.
Metaknight: Close combat expert.
Pikachu: Small and fast with good finishing moves. They seriously ramped him up.
Marth: Like metaknight, his dedication to close combat makes him tough.
I am now a level 7 player, level 6 if I'm learning the character.

That was because I hate 75M. My least favorite stage. And I kept blowing myself up with mines. :g-starburst:
I've been thinking about tiering in SSBB, actually. I haven't played it extensively enough and against enough other people to figure out exactly who the 'cream of the crop' characters are.
I will say, however, that Toon Link is definitely top tier. This I know.
Anyone else have any POV on tiers?
Totally agree on Toon Link, he's a beast if you use him right.
From what I've heard so far, I've seen a lot of people place Meta Knight, ROB, Snake, Wolf, and Marth on the top tier. Personally I can really only see that with Toon Link and Marth so far, though I think Wolf has a shot as well. It's really hard to say right now though.
Meta Knight's pretty scary, but I'm not sure if I'd put him in the top tier. He doesn't have any really good KOing moves - uair and fsmash can KO, but Meta Knight needs to get his opponent to higher percentages than most. That's not an unaccomplishable feat due to his tornado and generally damaging A moves, but it's still trouble. Meta Knight's best bet for KOing the opponent is probably by gimping them via edgehog or footstool, but I've played against some Meta Knight players and they all have trouble getting me (Lucas, Olimar or Diddy usually) below the stage in the first place. I could, however, see a legitimate argument for top tier placement of Meta Knight.
R.O.B....I'm not sure what to think of him. I've used him a lot, largely because he looks cool and brings back great memories, but he's in that tough place where his only moves with good knockback are really, really slow...or they need to be charged up (gyro). He can murder people, but I think he's a bit too limited to really be top tier.
Snake? (Snake? SNAAAAAAKE!) Maybe I haven't faced anyone who's really good with him, but I can't see him being top tier at all. Yes, he can rig the enemy base with explosives and generally make moving around a living hell for opponents - but he has to remember where they are, and hope the opponent doesn't remember. I could see him making it if most of his moves didn't also harm him, and if his recovery wasn't so easy to gimp.
Wolf...I'm still figuring him out, myself. He's one of my favourite and most used characters, but definitely has a high learning curve (which I have not overcome yet) due to the weird timing required for landing his moves and not getting bolloxed in return. I could see him being top tier, or not. I guess we'll just have to wait for that one.
I definitely agree with Marth being in the top tier. He's had a massive upgrade since Melee, most noticeably in the priority of his moves (which I was definitely not prepared for. I'd love to fight your Marth again, but that's a different discussion), but also in that his nspecial, uspecial and fspecial are considerably better. He was already a contender in Melee, but all this probably bumps him up to the top tier.
I'd also like to nominate Ness. His recovery is still abysmal, but seems to be a bit more manageable now (if only in the angles that PK Thunder sends him). The real upgrades, though, are in his aerial game - you do not want to engage this guy in midair, he will absolutely kill you! It also seems easier than before to hit people with his baseball bat, but maybe I'm just imagining things.

I use a dsmash to KO as well with Meta. I say top tier is Marth, Meta, Toon.
Bottom: Pit :p
Second to last: Bowser... They've upgraded him but too slow for me. His power is good, though. Also another here is Lucario, cool concept but at peak power, one hit kills him.

The others I was just throwing out what I heard from others, but especially with Snake, I'm not sure I see what others are seeing yet.
I think my one problem with Wolf is that he's heavy enough in the air to make his moves tougher to time. Unlike Falco who seems to have just enough weight to pound as well as maneuver, Wolf is a little rougher and as a result loses a lot of mobility when he can be beaten to the punch up there.
Marth was actually nerfed slightly, according to some of the higher level players. His specials are a little more effective, but he's lost a lot of speed on his regular neutral attack, and his sword was shortened a bit, which is a huge draw back against characters with a lot of reach. Unless, of course, you're using his neutral special, but the faster the pace of the game the tougher it'll be to compensate against. (Also, lemme know if you see me online if you'd like a rematch, I'm always up for keeping Marth sharp)
My main problem with Ness has always been his speed. When going against someone who can outpace him, he lacks the weight to make a proper comeback, and once you're familiar with his moveset, it becomes easy to compensate for his attacks. Well, some of them anyway. I guess I'm just a little cold to him because he was my favourite in the original Smash Bros but I've drifted away from him a while back, but in brawl he doesn't seem to have gotten enough of boost to put him up towards the top. Although thankfully the top isn't quite where it was anymore since it's a bit more balanced.
Speaking of Melee's tiers, what's up with Fox? He used to be a beast, but the nerf he got seems to have really made people lose interest. Same for Falco I suppose, though aside from his shield, I'm finding him a little easier to use.

I think Fox was nerfed a lot. His smashes aren't so great at all.
I don't like Marth. I mean, I completely suck with him while JGonspy is some sort of Brawl-Man(Bear Pig?) God with him.

If nothing else, I must agree on the game being more balanced. I'm incredibly happy that top/middle/bottom tiering doesn't dictate who wins, just who has an advantage (which may be enhanced or negated depending on exactly who's fighting who). As someone who used to play Adon all the time in Street Fighter Alpha 3 just because everyone else on the planet used shotos, I'm really glad to see that rochambeau isn't a necessary game to play in Brawl.
As for Fox, the Starfox crew seems to switch off being cool in each game. In SSB64, Fox was my main man - in Melee, it was Falco - now it's Wolf.

Fox was unanimously placed at the top tier in Melee, and in the hands of a truly great player, he was pretty astounding. I can't say I can use him all that well, but some of the folks out there are just scary good with him.
I'm not as good as some players out there. Marth is getting more popular with Brawl and I have a feeling that if I entered a high level tournament I probably wouldn't last all that long. (And for the record, it's Bear and Gecko)

I think one thing that changes tiers isn't so much the nerfing and buffing of certain characters, but the overall changes to the gameplay. The game is a lot slower now, and characters are floaty. A lot of moves weren't changed, so much as they aren't as/are more effective because of mechanic tweaks.
I'm glad they gave Zelda a boost. I love her in Melee and now she's better. Din's fire has some serious KO potential, which is nice.

I only wish Zelda getting a boost didn't come at the expense of Sheik being worth playing. I remember the one highish level Melee tournament I played in, I got to the semifinals with Sheik. I didn't know how to wavedash then and still don't, but she (he?) was so damn fast and accurate that I didn't have a problem dashing and juggling the hell out of my opponents, wavedash or no.
Then I tried to play Sheik in Brawl...ugh! Not interested any more.

Well, wavedashing is gone so it's no issue any more so that's nice.
Totally agree with Sheik though. She was a force in Melee, now she's a #####cat. I have a friend who played in some high level tournaments who's going to be very sad now.

I actually hated playing as Sheik in Melee. Yeah, she was awesome, but not a lot of fun to use. Now though, I don't mind so much. Zelda is still where it's at, but if Ganondorf, Bowser, Snake or some other slowpoke is in front of me, I don't mind hitting the Down + B now.
I can see where someone would find Sheik boring to play as...but personally, I enjoy bouncing around like a maniac. That's probably why I'm gravitating toward Diddy Kong in Brawl now - who is really a lot better than I expected him to be...the only problem I can see is that his recovery is pretty gimpable, and he seems to have trouble KOing with his smashes.

The game is much more balanced than the last installment.
ROB is amazing. His gyro is a great finisher, as well as his kick up. His side finishes are pretty good too, but yes they are slow.
Wolf is amazing, but if you aren't practiced with him he suicides very easily. Once you figure that out, he's fast and has great finishers.
I'm surprised to see Bowser rating low: He's a house.

Reading this thread I see I'm not the only one who visits the Smash Forum where all the real Vets talk. I can tell by th terminology and points raised othher people read it too.
And Sig, a trick to using Wolf is to roll...CONSTANTLY. Roll away from you opponent. Spam the laser. Roll away when he approaches, and you use Reflective Shield if he sends a projectile. He becomes nearly unhittable because of his speed. It's CRAZY.
Out of curiosity, who else here visits that forum? I haven't ever been to it, so wouldn't know the "lingo" there.

I gotta change my Top 5.
Ness: Still gotta go with my Boy Ness. He just fits my Play style the best.
Gotta work on my PKT2 though.
ZSS: I have been practicing with her for about a week now and she's alot of fun to use. I am losing to my friends alot but I am getting closer to beating them with her. I hate the Smash Ball with her cause I can't get the hang of regular Samus.
Pit: I just started to use him again. Still not getting the finishing kills I want but I just seem to keep gravitating back to playing him.
Luigi: I have alot of fun with him though I have been playing him less and less lately :(
Peach: I just started to play her cause my friend used to main her in Melee but now doesn't like her cause she lost alot of her power moves. I want to beat him down with her cause it would be funny lol. Plus her Side Taunt is hilarious :)

Forward special.
Forward Special is good but it normally only KO's at really high percents. Sometimes I have better luck with her Forward and Back Air. A really good one is the kick you get after you use the Down Special (extra jump).
KO'ing has been a problem for me. I originally thought the foward special was the best one but have been trying out some of her Fair and Bair kicks.
My friends do hate getting a "whipping" though
