Ok first off, I'm very choosey about which games I play in. I will only play in certain themes or with certain mods. I don't play in a ton of games at once and like to focus on those I am in. That said, I have been offed really early in the last few games I've been in.

It's been suggested that it's because I'm a bully and annoying to boot. Fair enough. Still, I'm not really that good of a player. I literally have no wins. None. Not one single win. And while that is not the sole way to guage how skilled a person is at these games, it is a start.

I guess I'm just frustrated that I was looking forward to playing in the games I'm in and end up dead before I can even get anywhere in the game. Yeah, I know. Join the club. It happens to Rokk, JackA, Thawmus, etc all the time. Still, I'm not used to it and it's really bothering me. Why am I such a target? Is it really just to get me to shut up?

If it makes you feel any better Stan, think of it in this term: I was just killed during the very opening phase of a game. I could not have been chosen due to "known information", "hunches", etc. It wasn't even a Mafia hit. The person just thought it would be funny to remove me from the game right off the bat.

I guess that's not really something to "make you feel better" but it is a question I've pondered about myself so, well, just saying you're not the only one who wonders at times. :)

In Vanilla III, it wasn't anything personal.

You were simply the first vote on the first day and, since I was the serial killer, I killed you. I also attempted to kill (honestly can't remember if I was successful or not) the second vote on the second day. The third day I would've killed the third voter. That was going to be my M.O. throughout the whole game, but I died too soon to really develop it.

I've been dying very numerously lately too, see disney, something diff 4, bad guy, shaun of the dead, horror, I actually die on day 1 now! I barely have any wins also.

I don't think batfink wanted to kill you. He just voted for you as a joke. However, I think the "special event" of the day was that whomever gets voted first dies.

Kind of like the time DocDoom jokingly voted for JKLantern in Harry Potter mafia, but it turned out JK was a bomb. So they both died. :p

It all comes down to this:

We all know that the Mafia typically kills confirmed townies. That's their MO, and that's what they're typically going to try and do.

People like you, me, Rokk, JackA, JoH2005, and Magnito? We don't get lynched very often. Matter of fact, I've only been lynched once, and that was when I threw myself under the bus for my mafia teammates (which gave them a substantial leg up, and they ended up winning). So when the mafia doesn't have a confirmed townie to kill? They're going to go after the guys that are nearly impossible to lynch.

And it doesn't help that the people I just mentioned are typically able to contribute, regardless of what their role may be. I usually name a mafia member on a hunch alone at LEAST once per game. Rokk tends to organize the townies without really organizing them. JackA is, quite obviously, the best at solving puzzles on HCR. JoH2005 puts information together better than anyone else, and finds inconsistencies and contradictions faster than anyone else. Magnito's a smart player, and people are, quite frankly, afraid of his ire, because if he's upset with you, he'll let you know it. And you bully people, which is something that no mafia member wants to deal with, because it means they have to defend themselves. Which is always a losing battle, no matter which way you slice it. They're just cutting their losses.

In essence, those are all powered townies. I can completely understand mafias trying to take those guys out early in the game. Yes, it's annoying, and it takes you out of games you're pumped for, but you cannot deny that it is simply poor strategy to let those people walk through the first night.

The real problem here is townies who don't use protective and tracking roles to take advantage of this situation. Mafias would be less apt to get rid of the big-name players early in the game, if they had to fear being outed as a result. It also wouldn't hurt if more players tried contributing more during daytime discussion, rather than let the spotlight be on a paltry few. I still sincerely believe that the majority of players here are spoiled with role abilities, and don't know how to discuss, accuse, pressure, or deceive other players, which are all useful ways of playing as either townies, or mafiosos. Which was, again, the whole point of the Vanilla series. While I feel that the Vanilla series was a success for some players in the fun aspect, I'm not sure it really did anything for people's skills. At least, I never heard anyone say, "Boy, my play's really improved!" :ermm:

In any case, this isn't a real new problem, here or anywhere else, for that matter. Go to any other mafia forum, and you'll see similar discussions. :(

It all comes down to this:*snip* :(

Yeah, I guess that's true. Truffle has been getting axed early on for the same reason lately. I think your analysis about most townies being silent and not knowing how to presure people is dead on. Look at "You write your own roles" The second day phase there was NO discussion at all because I was silent. They didn't reach a majority and just waited for someone to come forward with intel. What a waste. Oh well. I guess it'll just have to be something I get used to.

EDIT: I'd like to add that my ability to play mafia convincingly has increased a great deal since I started playing vanilla games IMO. I just get smoked by the SK.

You live, you die, you get frustrated. Such is the gift of Mafia.

I can't tell you how frustrated I was that nobody realized MSU was mafia in Vanilla III. I was watching it going, "Damn it's so obvious", and couldn't do a thing to stop it.

The frustration of dying early, yeah it sucks, (Looks over at Disney 3,4, and 5) but that's the reason I don't try to be too obvious in most games. Sore thumbs are mafia targets, period. Then if you live, people suspect you're mafia when you're town. But at this point everybody kind of knows everybody else's style, to change it now might not get you anything but dead quicker.

Personally, you're an easy target for lynching. I have no clue why, but people don't even hesitate to lynch you. So if I ever need a lynch started or a scapegoat, I would seriously consider you my victim. Not because of your actions, but because of the board's general demeanor towards you. I'm finding out though that your hunches are much more accurate than people give you credit for.

CFGuy

Like the Never Ending Story?

No, it wasn't going to be a real game.
I had noticed from the posts in the "Whine about your game being closed" thread that people are bored when the game is closed. (Duh, that should be obvious. I can really state the obvious, huh? Slaps forehead)
That and a lot of games are fun to post in character. Remember all the pirate talk when the Pirates mafia was going on. There have been a ton of really cool and fun to read characters.

But you aren't supposed to post outside a game when it's still running and when the game is over there is no place to post as that character.

So, my idea was to just start a thread titled the "Never Ending Mafia Game" where instead of "Whining" you could come into the thread and post as any character that you have ever played. If someone was getting annoying, and enough people voted to lynch them, then they could not be that character again for a few days. There would never be a night phase so it would never be closed.

Mainly, just an idea to help pass the time waiting on games to open.
I had PM'ed JOH to see what he thought of the idea and then got a call from a customer of where I used to work. They had tracked me down and wanted me to do some database work for them. Started out going to be about 5 hours and has moved on to another project that will be lots of hours. The good thing is I will have some extra money to support my Heroclix habit. :) The bad thing is now I have even more things to take up my time. hehe.

I've got a totally inappropriate vent/question. :)

What's the "crossing point" of "Just Right" and "Too Much" for cost of a wedding? Curious of the difference in answer between women, single men and married men. :)

(It's just on my mind because I'm about to have to have one of my attornies contact the catering for the wedding because they just changed their menus to "Brand New Menus"...with totally different items and increase in price; technically not a big deal but I'm quite irked about it. That's why I find the whole, "Are you sure if you're supposed to avoid stress you should be on the Realms?"-matter amusing. )

Well, I went relatively low key and low budget for my wedding and still spent close to 10Gs, including dresses(bride and bridesmaids), limo, venue, catering, tuxs, reception, hotel rooms (didn't need many) invitations(did them ourselves), party favors, et al. My understanding is a regular wedding costs at least twice that amount. I wanted mine to have a much more personal touch so I did some things a bit different and personalized

But one way I've heard to cut down on spending for a wedding, is to not say it's for a wedding. Catering prices tend to be a bit less, venue prices tend to be a bit less. You get the drift.

So in the end, it's really personal preference. I'd have bawked at a 20G price tag (i.e. too much), but 10Gs was relatively reasonable if you want a more intimate setting and not elope.

Well, I wouldn't know what to tell you. You are in a different area, where prices may be higher or lower (although I suspect higher) than other places. So to compare what other people from other areas have paid to what you may be paying might not be such a good idea. It would be better to research what caterers in the same area are charging. Sorry I couldn't be more help. Although I will say, for this area, I believe anywhere from $50-$100 per person depending on what type of place you go with. But like I said, the comparison could be completely skewed for your area.

I don't think a wedding should be expensive. If you need to spend insane amounts of money to make the day special you shouldn't even bother.

I'd be happy to go through a list of items and go into detail, though.

kontrol
04/09/2008, 19:33
I didn't really recommend an amount. Just stated what I spent, well it's more of a what we spent. The wedding was way more of a "for us by us" event. We went to dozens of caterers and bakers all because we wanted it just right (Menu, the way the food was seasoned, the art of the cake, and the filling. *sidenote* for our anniversary we always get the same top tier of the cake). We went to dozens of florists because we had to have specific species of flowers in a specific color (And ended up going to a wholesale place, basically where florists get their flowers in the Chicago area) Went to a few table and chairs places because we wanted the design to be just right. Checked out dozens of photographers, ended up going with a freelance editorial one because we didn't like the "posed" style of pictures we saw in many of the others.

Overall we probably micromanaged the whole thing, but the event came out wonderful.

Still do what your future wife wants. This after all is the day she's been thinking of for most of her life in all likelihood. Despite how it may have come across earlier, that's exactly what I did.

Adding to my vent:

Attorneys are the wordiest mf's I know. And the revisions are obnoxious. They must say everything to perfection, because, oh noes, what if something is misinterpreted or misconstrued. Taken out of context that sentence can be misleading, so we have to put this word in front of that word ... oh wait, it makes better sense if we switch them back ... no wait, let's move it after this sentence and draw an arrow over here and put this there and move that cite in front of this sentence and draw an arrow bisecting the other arrow so that you can't tell which is supposed to go where and then we'll cross this out entirely, but then that doesn't make sense, so we'll need it back in so we'll put STET, but do we mean this cross out or that cross out because we wrote STET way over here and drew an arrow that doesn't really point to anything and ..... wait is that sentence being crossed out or is it circled with an arrow pointing it to somewhere else, and are you now putting that word you took out way back in the beginning back into the document so that you have to change the whole thing back, but leave that part the same .................................... Oh, and I need a table of contents and a table of authorities, and I need it blacklined and a PowerPoint presentation made out of it and put onto a disk ...... oh, and by the way, I need this done in 20 minutes.

Oh, okay. Well let me get out my ####ing fairy wand and wave it over your document and presto! :g-starburst:

What's the "crossing point" of "Just Right" and "Too Much" for cost of a wedding? Curious of the difference in answer between women, single men and married men. :)

In my case, the final price we paid (9-10G) was driven by the number of people we invited (125) and how much money we actually had in the budget (not more than 10G, if you can't tell.)

This was what I told my then-fiancee (now wife) when we sat down to plan the event: "I consider this to be your day and I will give you carte blanche to get what you want to make it as memorable as you want it to be. My only stipulation is that we have to have mariachis."

And so it came to pass that we had a very nicely catered reception in the green area between my wife's uncle's and grandma's houses (it is a fenced, enclosed, large plot of land.) We rented a pavilion, tables, and chairs, set up a bar on one deck area and the dinner buffet on the other one, and had the folks who made the cake and catered the event also provide servers and a bartender. Of course, instead of a chamber quarter or dee-jay, we had a live band of mariachis arrive and play a two-hour set. To this date we get compliments on the very simple yet tasteful soiree that we put together. The smile on my bride's face and the sheer happiness that I felt that day made everything worthwhile.

There it is and there you have it, Rokk. You don't have to spend gobs of cash to make it classy and elegant.

On the topic of your specific situation, once we signed the contract with the caterer, they were contractually obligated to provide the specifics like food the way we ordered them at the price we were quoted, for the date we booked. They didn't have a choice once they agreed to it. I guess in your case, that would've helped you. Look into it.

Another off topic vent.

So in Oklahoma it's 6:30 am. I haven't gone to bed yet. I was in a meeting from 7 pm til 6 am, no lie.

I wore my last pair of socks today (just haven't gotten around to doing laundry this week) so of course it rained so hard that it flooded and my socks and jeans got all wet.

I'd vent some more but I'm much too tired. I think I'm gonna go pass out...or maybe take a shower...or do laundry...or start my homework.

Flooding sucks. I had to wade through some of it to clear out a ditch (some trees limbs had washed down and was creating a dam that was blocking the flow of water), otherwise it would have washed away a barn yesterday. Froze my butt off, that water was cold and it came up to my waist. I have got to build a bigger ditch this summer.

I'm pissed.

How hard is it to read a thread and pay attention to what's going on before casting a vote?

I mean, when a large group of people makes it clear that the point is simply to apply pressure to someone, how difficult is it to realize that 'apply pressure' equates to 'give them a chance to get online and tell us their side of the story with the threat of a lynch looming' rather than 'kill him before he has a chance to log back in' ... ?

Seriously.

Twice now -- TWICE! ON CONSECUTIVE DAYS! -- we (and, by 'we' I mean 'I') have started a lynch vote saying, "Hey, let's put a little pressure on [insert player here] and see what we can find out" and we've had someone come in and jump the vote and kill the person before they've ever even logged back on, much less had the chance to defend themselves or tell us something useful.

Is it seriously asking too much to think that people can take a second and READ THE FRIGGIN' THREAD before simply going "Well, hey, since everyone else has already voted for [insert character here], let me polish them off!" ... ?!

Eh, among other things they dropped a bunch of menu items - and reduced some of our other picks to more "standard fare" (e.g. - our chicken selection has been changed to "chicken picata" which, frankly, the local diner serves) - while raising costs. I'm pointing out to them they definitely -can't- raise the cost because of contract and the food items we signed on for should still be honoured but they're saying, "We had to change chefs and that's adjusted everything."

I've left it to one of my attornies at this point because, frankly, I'm really not supposed to be back to handling this sort of stuff still.

(There's nothing wrong with chicken picata - I don't mean to sound condescending towards it - but, to be brutally honest, you're spending 30K+ on food you want to keep the original baked brie/truffles/etc. dish they had as one of the "per table appetizers" and not have it switched to "a slab of warm brie with raspberries on the side"...especially since with it being October it's not like raspberries are exactly fresh.)

Having lost their previous chef, it doesn't sound like the caterer will be capable of providing the same level of quality of its product that was originally promised. It is likely your attorney will make it possible for you to back out of the contract with no monetary penalty since the caterer is, technically, unable to honor their contractual obligations as originally agreed to. I would start looking into a new caterer.

Understandable. The hassle I went through with the venue almost had me pulling from it 3 days before the wedding. But it all worked out. Sounds like Truffle will probably be right and you may have to look at new catering options. The original contract may not be able to be upheld as she said. But please, really let your attorneys handle it.

Actually, this is a pretty common (at least for me) mafia tactic. Get a lynch train rolling by interspersing votes for someone that is suspected, but that we know is town (or at least, not in OUR mafia), so that our hands are relatively clean.

You know, I've always heard that myth about bridesmaids but having been to many a wedding - and a groomsman far too often - I still believe it's a myth. It's easier to classify it along with La Llorona and such things than to blame myself as unappealing.

(As for the catering deal, I'm sure you guys are right - which is why I'm having the attorney deal with it - but it's just annoying that I even had to stoop to such things; if the business had any character it should never have gotten to that point.)

Urrrrrrggghhhh, what is it with me and day 1 lynches recently?!?!?!? Do i really piss the town off that much or is someone saying "i've got no evidence but he's probably evil" enough nowadays?

Uhm...not to discuss a game outside of its' thread but if it's the lynch I'm thinking of the person -is- saying they've some evidence so that should cheer you up. ;)

Perhaps, i'm just upset thats it's happening in 2 consecutive days in a row, i'm feeling a lot of 'goodman hate' :(

Easy. We all go through phases like that - and some of us never really escape them (I mean, have you seen how many games I have to battle the whole time to keep from being lynched even when I'm Town?) - and I'm sure it's not goodman-hate. We enjoy picking on you too much to chase you away. ;)

Lol, i bet you do, i just find it ironic that before i was extremely stressed and couldn't really give mafia my full time, but now as soon as i've got nothing on my plate and can focus on mafia i seem to be getting killed left right and centre, bizarre world eh?

I feel your pain about that, man. I've been nightkilled early in a LOT of games that I was pretty geeked about (MST3K still burns, oh, it burns...).

I'll second that. Not only did I get NK'ed along with you on Night One but I had -The- role for the game. :(

You know what... it could be worse.

You could be snookered and led around for the entire freakin' game and then skewered hard in the back.

Bitter, oh, a tad.    :ermm: :tired:

(This has just been a bad day. Icing on the cake, as it were. :cheeky: )

I am still catching up on everything. I see I was lynched in Improv. Glad I was mafia. I don't know how I would feel being lynched as a townie and not around to defend myself.

The Innocent should fear no retribution from the Mob.

Even if the hangman's noose finds thee, know that it merely proves the sanctity of thy spirit.

Nah, who am I kidding? It pretty much bites to get lynched when you can't defend yourself. I can't -believe- someone started a lynch on you while you were gone. :noid: :nervous:

Look on the bright side - you -were- Mafia. I mean, there isn't much you can be angry about for the Town lynching the Mob Killer. :cheeky:

(Soooo happy you didn't get in -that- much training with a b.b. rifle at camp; I've seen "A Christmas Story" - I've heard the tales!)

Hey, I was within the inner circles of the target 8 times out of 10, 4 of which were in the black (center circle). If I don't outright take you out, I will certainly maim you. You better watch your step. :devious: :p

Of course I'm not really upset about the lynching (in Matrix either). I was, as you say, mafia after all.

Hey, if I had a list of every time I was killed in mafia... I don't think I'd be able to play anything other than Serial Killer... :p
