View Full Version : Mind control/Blackmail. Does it work?

As it is usually played mind control/Blackmail is a practically useless and frankly annoying power. No one even gives a second thought to posts like "I have learned that **** is evil" or "OMG ***** is eeeeeeeevil!!1!!!!!11!"
The only time I have witnessed mind control being used to good effect was when the game had a role that would kill the first person to vote for it. I sent so many people to die at groovyboy's hands it got to be rediculous (We still lost). Even that depends on the Mind controller learning about the other role and both of them staying alive long enough to use it.
I had an idea to try and make mind control more powerful/interesting.
Mind Controlling SK
Each night the SK will target a player and force them to vote a certain way the next day. Here's the catch; If the mind controlled player does not succeed in getting his target lynched then he is killed at the end of the day phase.
This will mean no more obvious mind control posting. If the MC'ed character wants to stay alive he is going to have to play it off as a legitimate lead. Either way the SK gets his kill.
Thoughts? Do you have any ideas to make mind control a useful power?

Mind control and blackmailing can both be described various powers. I'm not sure I know which role you are talking about.
Redirection: Player targets another, who is forced to target someone of the player's choice.
Vote stealing: Takes a vote from another player, becoming a double voter.
Vote Forcing: Player forces his target to vote for another player.
Post Control: Forces another player to include a phrase, or alter their posts in some way. Can also includepost restriction.
So I don't know which power you are talking about...
Some of these are not that great, but others are VERY powerful, and don't need beefing up at all.

I like that idea. A slightly weaker version of a mafia bomber, but adds more to the game.

I actually was the "Vote-forcer/ Mind Controller" SK in What else. I also was the 10th last to die.

Vote Forcing: Player forces his target to vote for another player.
That one. I think it needs some help to be effective in most games.
You just gotta be very specific. In my games, I make it perfectly clear that if they say anything that even hints they are being controlled, they will be mod-killed.

But that doesn't give the MCed character any incentive to actually press a lynch on his target. No one is going to follow a point made without real logic.

By "real" logic I mean something more then the basic "I think John Doe is mafia."
While I shouldn't go into detail about a game in progress, the character is long since dead, so I don't feel it would matter.
My MCer could have the person vote however they wish AND could tell them exactly why. Make them claim to be the cop, the tracker etc. Anything they want. The MCed then had to say exactly this, and not deviate at all, or else be modkilled. Could have been real dangerous. Unfortunately, the MCer was killed very early on/

Oh ok. Well that is another good solution. Thanks for the input.

The most amazing version of "mind control" was Universo in Melkhor's LoSH game.
Not only could I control multiple people at night but I could have Melkhor tell them exactly what to say or not to say. I was very tempted to make TAK lie but I didn't have it in me. :p

In FMM3 with Kingpin's Blackmail, I warned Iron Ham that he couldn't make it seem as though he was being MCed, and then compalined when Kingpin's goons killed him (modkill).
Still that felt like a joke.

Is Iron Ham still playing? I feel like I haven't seen him in forever, in stark contrast to the time when I was masoned/mafiaed with him in 5 games at once. :p

That was just like my Poison Ivy role in Batman:Hush.
If I hadn't died Night 1, it would have been glorious... (especially with Superman flying around)
It was the role I was most excited about in a LOOOOOOOONG time too.
