How do you want your fliers?

This discussion came up in the Gale Force 9 flight stand thread, so I thought that it was worth making a poll. Since I think it ultimately comes down to personal preference, I was curious what the preference of the HCRealms community is.

That'd be my choice, though I can accept standing flyers too depending on the character (Darkseid from Crisis is fine for example).

But generally, I'm glad the flight stands are gone (they weren't good, aesthetically speaking), and most flyers should have dynamic sculpts representing them flying (if only for identification purpose).

I don't mind standing sculpts (Hal Jordan is pretty awesome), but I would like some sort of way to visually communicate to the player that the figure flies - other than the symbol itself.

KC and Earth-2 Superman are also excellent examples of "standing figures", but I like sculpts like Black Adam and Nightwing & Starfire.

I went with "No sculpts of fliers standing. Figure does not have flight stand (CR Kyle Rayner and Black Adam)", too, as I would prefer something between the character and the dial base to better make it clear that the character can fly.

However, as we already have sculpts such as Darkhawk (http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=13215)'s it seems likely we're likely to always have some confusion in this post-flight base world. Having just recently gone fishing through a bunch of earlier sets for team-building, though, I will be happy not to have to keep deciding between gluing fliers to bases and spending several minutes trying to match sculpts and bases.

I suppose my preference would be for flying sculpts with flight-stands. I enjoy the option of switching sculpts and I like the option of having the little flight indicator even if it's useless for sanctioned events now.

I'd also be perfectly happy with flying sculpts like Kyle.

All I really want is for my fliers to look like fliers.

(Although I'm willing to make a few exceptions, like SR Specter.)

This would be my choice. The flight stand was just plain ugly, flimpy and prone to breakage. I don't even want to get into the fact that I had a JL flight stand where the HOLE was not even drilled into the dumb thing to where I could put the foot peg of the figure in it or the horribly leaning flight stands I've seen that make everyone look like a drunk Tony Stark trying to fly.

The ONLY redeamable quality of the flight stands were for mod purposes. It was sooooo much easier to mod a flier and just stick it in the flight stand-enabled bases.

I wonder if the results will start to change after players become used to not having flight stands. Getting some better standing sculpts might also help persuade players to accept the current system as well.

It is worth noting that it appears that the preference has less to do with flight stands and more to do with sculpts.

I guess I should have phrased the options better. I didn't mean to imply that all sculpts should be standing or sculpted to be flying. The first two options were meant to be more along the lines of "if we are going to have fliers in standing poses, which do you prefer." It wasn't meant to imply that all of the fliers should have standing poses.

I've always wished they'd stop making fliers standing in mid air. I think they should go so far as to make figures that have grounded scuplted in a hovering pose alighted on the base, while "full dial" fliers should have more dynamic aeiral poses, and characters with stealth should be crouching, and no sculpt should have objects(Kalibak) walls(question) and rooftops(pick a batman robin or spiderman) and walkways(black mask) as if those characters were carrying a part of the map around with them; or like they're equipped with 3d objects.

I do love some of those sculpts, but just from a semiotic game mechanics point of view, it would be nice if sculpt was used as a visual cue for gameplay.

Seeing a figure standing on a dial without a flight stand and with a :m-boot: leads you to think it's not a flier, even if they normally fly..... or a figure standing on a dial with a :m-wing: when they don't fly on their own... that could get confusing. LOL!

Plus, they just look SO much cooler if they look like they are taking off (leaping, flying, etc) with an energy trail, smoke cloud, clear streak indicating speed (ala SN Antman), or streak of light behind them..... those just look COOL!

Went with "No standing sculpts of fliers, flier does not have flight stand" because I think that is the best case about 90% of the time. In comics, most flying characters are best depicted in flying, dynamic poses a la Kyle Green Lantern or Black Adam from Crisis. There are a few characters, I think, who can fly but are better served by standing "come get some" poses to serve their commanding, powerful nature. Darkseid is one example, but even Superman could fit this bill as well.

Personally, I want to see an upside-down flying Bizarro.

There should be more than 1 allowed. I want to check everything with no flight stand. I don't mind an occasional standing flier, if they spend a lot of time on the ground but potentially CAN fly.

I like the wonderman figure standing on the flight stand...so..I ticked it..in hindsight..I've ticked it because I like the figure, so now I'm sitting here with a look on my face, like my finger has gone through the paper...
I reality.. I would like to see them either, being lifted in to the air on flames, smoke, ice, energy or what ever is applicable to any given figure, or standing if not.

I'm a vote for flight stands. I liked the visual identification of flying figures (and have even added flight stands to the old production error figures that had a wing but no stand). I also liked the ease of storage having the figure separate from the base. I'm worried about the sculpts like Kyle and Sinestro as if they break in the fancy plastic then it will be annoying to repair. The elevation indicator I don't need (i.e. I'm fine with Soaring being gone) so changing the flight stand to just be a central clear post is fine (that will avoid the mis-assembled flight stand issues people have referenced).

Either way I'd prefer sculpts without flying figures standing on the ground. Sure the new Hal has a dramatic, even iconic, pose but it can get in the way of game mechanics IMHO.

For me really, it depends on the characters pose (Hal Jordan GL and Darkseid). But Im all for the little peg (Black Adam, Sinestro). Because, I keep forgetting Karate Kid is a flier sometimes. Just make them short pegs. Because Kyle Rayner is a little tough to store. ;)

agree. I want a good character appropriate sculpt, that is of #1 importance to me. Characters whose flight ability is their main power (say like Angel) should always be represented flying.

Someone whose flight is NOT, doesn't need that as long as they've got a nice dynamic sculpt. Its helpful if it is a sculpt that gives the impression of flight, but its not necessary.

I think the real problem is that we've all been trained to look at the flight stand to represent a fliers and not the symbols themselves.

I am mixed. I don't want all fliers to be like Kyle, because some fliers, like Donna Troy, are more than often not flying. Other fliers, like Beast Boy, don't fly in their normal form. Fliers like Supernova, however, should be flying! I do want more dynamic sculpts, but I am not against the Donna and Gar sculpts, but the day they make a non flying Superman, is the day I quit playing heroclix.

Basically, I don't want flight stands, and, if at all possible, I want an easy, nice-looking way to remember that the figure is a flier.

I liked flight stands.

I thought that doing away with them was cheap and wrong, just like the thinner characters cards in the crisis set, except for the worlds finest card.
Compare the cards with avengers, justice league and M&M and youll see what I mean.

On the flight stands issue I think they should go back to the way they used to do it....It causes too much confusion in games, especially with new players or inexperienced players and invariably leads to diaster or mistakes for them. Please note that not everyone is into 300 and 400 pt. games, and in games that small this situation is almost a non issue. But I play 600, 800, and 1000 point games, almost always, and the Crisis flyers have proven an annoyance only in so far as game aesthetics but it is still unnecessary and in my opinion kinda insulting.

I have been playing since 2003 and my only real problem with Wizkids is when they just change or cheap out the game, more and more, and seem to do it for no good reason:

Dials since the avengers set wont work with rings and problems turning them, etc.

Character cards started in avengers, changed size in justice league, seemed to stabilize in M&M and then became wafer thin and far more easy to crease, damage, etc. in Crisis. Cheap, why bother to do in first place...
The sad thing is I was violently opposed to character cards and would have fought in the streets to stop them if I could, then I became a big convert to them and completely changed my postion but now I am beginning to lean back the other way if they are going to be so cheaply made.....

Possible mindset that lead to the elimination of flightstands:

Eliminate flight stands for the 21st set of clix ( Didnt include Universe or any starter, action or special sets in my number just main sets ) for no real reason. We have been doing this game for 5 years and we have released 20 sets plus other items but now we are just going to stop and not do it that way anymore......Seriously folks I personally know people who taking this mindset to their jobs or relationships has caused them to get fired and/or divorced. We need to really watch Wizkids, we unfortunately no longer have any credibility with them and they really do not seem to pay alot of attention to us, seem to take us for granted and view us as some sort of annoying afterthought.

These are my opinions, sorry to rant, have strong feelings on the flightstand thing and that got me going.....
