I'm going to start another 25-mission B-17 thread in June (after my vacation, so it's not interrupted after it gets started.)

Here's the last B-17 thread for those of you not familiar with it:

http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=209370

In the meantime, I am in the mood to play this game again now. So this weekend, I will run a single mission.

It will be the single most dangerous mission in the game: Flying the rearmost bomber in the lowest squadron in a bombing mission against the U-boat pens at La Rochelle.

So I need 9 more foolishly brave volunteers to fill up the crew.

Pilot--Kalel21

Co-Pilot: pbdeberry

Flight Engineer/Top Turret:Antipathy

Navigator: Shadow40

Bombardier: CurBludeon

Radio Man: theanalogkid

Ball Turret Gunner:anonymOuse

Port Waist Gunner: hail eris

Starboard Waist Gunner: St Cuthbert

Tail Gunnner: Gentlegamer

leave, I guess.

It's just as well. After being the only guy to fly all 25 missions last time and survive, you know you would have been riddled with flak and machine gun bullets in no time at all.

Don't worry--a full campaign will start in June.

'twas a bizarre and bloody mission:

We take to the air with the following crew:

Pilot--Kalel21

Co-Pilot: pbdeberry

Flight Engineer/Top Turret:Antipathy

Navigator: Shadow40

Bombardier: CurBludgeon

Radio Man: theanalogkid

Ball Turret Gunner:anonymOuse

Port Waist Gunner: hail eris

Starboard Waist Gunner: St Cuthbert

Tail Gunnner: Gentlegamer

Zone 1—We take off.

Zone 2—Over the Channel. No enemy aircraft attack.

Zone 3—Still nothin’

Zone 4—Over occupied France now. A pair of ME-109s swoop in, but our escorting Spitfires chase them away.

Zone 5—We are now beyond the range of friendly fighters. An ME-110 attacks from below, while an ME-109 comes at us from the rear. anonymOuse in the Ball Turret damages the 110 and drives it off. Gentlegamer in the Tail Turret shoots down the 109. We are untouched.

Zone 6—Two waves of fighters attack.

A swarm of FW-190s attack us (with a lone ME 109 attacking from the rear as well). hail eris on the Port Waist gun chases one of the 190s away with an extended burst. Gentlegamer damages another 190 and drives it off. CurBludgeon on the Nose gun damages another, but it keeps coming. Both it and the 109 coming up our butt score hits.

The rudder is damaged, but still operates. Gentlegamer, hail eris and St. Cuthbert are all lightly wounded, but remain in action. The radio is knocked out. The oxygen supply to the nose is damaged, but still operates. The Starboard Cheek gun is knocked out.

The two enemy fighters come around for another pass. Antipathy in the Top Turret shoots one down and the other misses.

The second wave of fighters include three twin-engined ME 110s, as well as yet another ME 109 attacking from the rear. (Because we are the rear-most bomber in the squadron, we get that extra 109 sniping away at us every time we are attacked.)

The 109 is shot down by Gentlegamer—his 2nd kill. The 110s avoid our defensive fire, but miss us in turn.

Zone 7—A single wave of fighters attack, but this consists of a total of six ME 109s.

Gentlegamer scores his 3rd kill, but the other 109s get through. Fortunately, only one of them scores hits.

Unfortunately, it’s a nasty hit—the 109 manages to “walk” hits from nose to tail, scoring hits in each compartment.

Our navigator, Shadow40, is seriously wounded. The Top Turret is knocked out and Antipathy is seriously wounded. The rubber raft stored in the bomb bay is shot up. St. Cuthbert is seriously wounded. The starboard elevator on our tail is knocked out.

The 109 comes around for another attack from 12 o’clock high. He scores yet another hit, knocking out the Nose gun. But Gentlegamer tags him as he zips past, forcing him to break off the attack.

We are near the target now, but three crewmen are out of action, as our three of guns (including the two that protect us from attacks from the front.)

Zone 8—Over the target and the weather is clear. Two more waves of fighters wait for us though.

The first wave is a mixture of ME 109s and FW 190s. theanalogkid, on the radio room gun, manages to knock down a 109, scoring a kill. But one of the FW 190s scores several hits. TAK and hail eris are both seriously wounded.

The 190 comes around for another pass, but misses us.

The second wave consists of just two ME 109s. Gentlegamer shoots down one (his 4th kill), while the second one misses us.

We drop down for the bomb run.

The anti-aircraft fire is thick enough to walk on. A hit to our #2 engine knocks it out, while shrapnel seriously wounds Kalel21, our valiant pilot.

CurBludgeon peers into the bomb sight and pushes the release button. Despite the jostling from the flak hits, he plants 20% of the bombs on target, shattering U-boat pens and blasting holes in several submarines.

We turn for home. With our bombs gone, we can keep up the rest of the formation even with one engine out. But with several key machine guns out and six out of ten crewmen incapacitated by wounds, our situation looks grim.

Zone 8—A single wave of fighters attack, consisting again of ME 109s. Gentlegamer gets his 5th kill, becoming an Ace in one mission. But two of the 109s score hits. Our port elevator is knocked out—with both tail elevators gone, our landing back in England will become difficult.

The fighters that hit us come around for another attack. Curbludgeon on the Port Cheek gun (the only machine gun in the Nose compartment that still operates) damages one and drives it off. The other misses.

Zone 7—We get lucky—no enemy planes attack.

Zone 6—But our luck doesn’t hold up. Two waves of fighters hit us.

The first wave is a trio of ME 110s, plus the extra ME 109 from our rear. anonymOuse in the Ball Turret shoots down a 110, but the 109 coming in from the rear avoids our defensive fire and scores some hits.

Our starboard flap is knocked out and anonymOuse is seriously wounded. The 109 comes around for another pass and hits again, knocking out the Port Cheek gun. Also, our co-pilot pdeberry is lightly wounded (though he is still in action—fortunate, because there’s no one else left who can fly the plane.

The 109 comes in for another pass and knocks out the bomb site—a harmless hit since we’ve already dropped the bombs.

He comes around for a third pass, seriously wounding CurBludgeon. Now only three crewmen—pdeberry and Gentlegamer—are still active.

The second wave of fighters hit us. Gentlegamer damages and drives off an ME 109. Amazingly, none of the other 4 109s attacking us (despite having no one shoot at them) score hits.

Zone 5—We get really, really lucky. No enemy fighters attack.

Zone 4—We are back inside our friendly fighter umbrella, but several ME 110s sneak past the Spitfires and attack us. Our port flap is knocked out—adding once more to the difficulty of landing safely in England. The 110s are driven off by the Spitfires before they can come around for another pass.

Zone 3—No enemy fighters.

Zone 2—A single ME 109 dives past the Spitfires and scores a hit that knocks out our #4 engine. With two engines out, we can only travel one more zone. Fortunately, that will be enough.

But the 109 comes around for another pass. The unmanned Port Wait gun is knocked out and Gentlegamer is seriously wounded. Now pdeberry is the only conscious man left on board the plane.

The 109 comes around for one more attack. There’s no one left to shoot back at him. But he misses us, then runs for home.

Zone 1—We touch down on one of the emergency fields just over the cliffs of Dover. Despite the lack of working flaps or elevators, pdeberry manages to land us safely.

Of the nine wounded crewmen, anonymOuse and theanalogkid heal quickly and rejoin pdeberry. The other six survive, but their million dollar wounds earn them a discharge. They are shipped home.

So that’s it. The plane hit the target and got home safely. We shot down 8 enemy planes (with Gentlegamer accounting for 5 of those). No one died—though everyone but pdeberry was badly wounded. The mission is considered a success—though hosing out the blood afterwards was quite a job for the ground crew.

As I mentioned before, I start up a proper 25-mission campaign in June. Everyone be patient until then.

I would like to laugh at mouse and analog for being stupid enough to heal, assuring them a place back on the meat grinder. Gentlegamer is the intelligent one, becomming an ace and getting to go home in one fell stroke. While mouse and analog are wetting their pants, GG will be bedding ladies across the Midwest with tales of his exploits...
