View Full Version : Mods: Rank Your Games
As a mod, you can tell when your game is going well and when it is a flop. This thread is for everyone who has ever modded a minimum of two games. Rank all the games you have modded in terms of what you think was the most successful/most fun to the least.
Note: By posting here, you have given others the right to share their thoughts on your games. If you have criticisms, keep it constructive.
My games:
1) All Stars: Was very well balanced, came to photo finish, and had a cool concept. I consider it my best.
2) Smash Bros Brawl: Again, It was very well balanced, and was really fun to mod.
3) Futurama: Town should have down better then they did, but I kept everyone guessing.
4) Smash Bros Melee: Did pretty well for my first game. Added a new concept (Objects) that really took off.
5) South Park: Had a lot of potential and some great roles but bad mafia luck and almost no info (despite having multiple info gatherers) drops its score
6) Generation Gap: Was still fun, but very lopsided and not all that fair.
Oh, and feel free to both rank your own and comment on those who have ranked theirs.

1) Resident Evil - Not too big, not too complicated, but everything was well balanced and fun. Plus I got to try out some powers than nobody had ever used before. Came down to the wire, too. (Sequel is being planed btw. ;))
1.5) SD2 - The "almost everyone is mafia" twist was incredibly fun. I really wanted pbdeberry to pull off the win for the town but it wasn't to be.
2) Rogue War - Even though it was my first game here, I reread the roles and I still feel I did a great job. Recruiter had some bad luck which made it not as close as it could have been. Could have also made it a little less obvious who was in the game and who wasn't, particularly with characters who weren't in the comic storyline.
2.5) SD1 - Short, sweet, everybody has a gun.
3) Kingdom Come - Good characters, good powers, good plot twists...too unbalanced.
3.5) SD3 - Is there a mafia? Is there not a mafia? Whatever is going on, it sure took forever to get there. Probably would have been more fun if there was a mafia.
3.75) SD4 - Fun roles but a lack of participation and some confusing day/night phases made the game not very fun. Got some laughs and what the roles really did at the end and at least the dolphins had fun. :)
Hmmmmmmmmmm very well Mags;
1) What Else Mafia
By far the best game i've had a hand in, i loved creating the roles with TBB and spoofing people on the realms, i loved keeping everyone guessing who was who and who was mafia and what not, fairly balanced writeups from TBB and a spoof/rant thread along side it which i thought was funny even if i was the butt of all the jokes/rants :p
2) Be Your Own Badguy Mafia
It was the most balanced game i've run on my own, i loved the concept and the crazy character choices made by people participating, the writeups i think were fair although i was a little disappointed that the investigators didn't find or give out the townies anything but the suspicion was cast everywhere and i loved how the mafia ended up destroying each other for most of the game instead :classic:
3) Teen Titans Mafia
I really liked the subject material being a HUGE Titans fan, although this may have been my greatest downfall as i tried to imitate Melkhor's mafia style from his Legion game and give my characters multiple powers which totally backfired as the town became too powerful and hard to stop, also i included everything in the writeups which only worsened the mafia's chances, altough saying that throwing Shadow40/Trigon in a the end did mess with people a bit and it seemed to keep people interested.
4) Heroes Mafia
It seemed like a decent attempt for my first game however some of the roles featured were a bit flat powerwise as i tried to make them too accurately powerful as they were in the tv show, so Peter Petrelli was awesome and Ando was severly lacking in abilities, also due to the fact that the everyone knew who had what powers it was difficult to make things vague in the writeup so basically everyone knew who was who in the writeups, the mafia may have also been too small but still i enjoyed it at the time

Fixed. I'll rate mine in a bit.
also yeah i REALLY liked JoH's Resident Evil, it was the funnest game of his i've played and is probably in my top 3 mafia games i've ever played :)

Alright, I'll give this a go. Constructive criticism welcome.
1) Wild West: This was my first and was loosely based on one of my favorite movies. Also, it came right down to the very last 3 players and only one of them won.
2) Star Trek: I loved the set-up and story behind it. Also possibly my favorite mod death character in Terry O'Quinn. The Borg were such a panic-inducing threat that the town let the known mafia live in hopes of stopping the mass assimilation that they were certain was running rampant (even though it wasn't).
3&4) TIE between Sesame Street and Transformers. Both had characters I loved and some new ideas for me. Sesame Street allowed me to desecrate one of many people's beloved childhood memories while TF was my first game where I got to see how a good group of players who work well together could really be an effective mafia.
5&6) TIE between Kid's Show and Shaun of the Dead. Pretty poor participation in terms of active day phases and missing pm's really hurt these two games dispite my love for the themes and some of the roles. Still, they ended up turning out pretty balanced in the end so I guess hey're not a total wash, just not my favorite ones to mod. The write-ups in Shaun were a lot of fun to think up.
EDIT: Almost Vanilla was so different from anything else I've run that I can exactly place it on the list just yet. I can say that I loved the involvement level of those playing this time around.

1) Funny Marvel Mafia 1 - I just loved. I don't know why; there was barely any participation and the mafia won really easily, but still, I loved it.
2) DC London In Lamplight - I loved all the roles in this, because I could be really creative. I'm satisfied with the result too, because it feels cliche if the heroes always win.
3) Harry Potter (Version 2) - Probably would have been better if it weren't such a landslide win for the town (even though I thought the mafia had it in the bag at the start), but still it was fun to do the write-ups and stuff.
4) Final Fantasy VII - Felt so funny being so small, and it felt funny that Sephiroth won.
5) FMM2 - I loved how the two I loved, Emma and Mystique lived till the end. It also had some of the roles I've loved most, like Husk and Tag.
6) Harry Potter (Chainsaw Massacre) - I loved. 3 serial killers and 2 mafias. All in all, there were more evil people than town. I just loved. Looking back its actually the funniest thing I've ever done in my life.
7) FMM3 - It felt like it went on a month too long, but still it felt slightly funny. Having all Spider-man villains and allies, and Spider-man not even being in it. I laughed.
8) FMM4 - A failure in my eyes. I was trying too hard to be funny, and it just wasn't. I've learned from my mistakes.
I'll leave comments about JLAbnegation until it's actually finished.

1. Battle of the Bands - My favorite to mod, as I had to be pretty creative with the write-ups and roles. I really laughed out loud with the sheer number of people who target DocDoom187 night one.
2. Batman: Hush - Some of the write-ups were creepy. Like with Jim Gordon shooting Oracle, Joker killing Oracle, Joker killing Jason Todd, and destroying JackAssterson's sanity ;)
3. Pirates of the Caribbean - The more I looked at it, the more I realized how bad the write-ups were. I liked the roles, and to date it is the only game I've run that managed to top 1,000 posts, but I didn't do the best job modding it.
Literature Mafia - As it stands now, it goes in at number 2. We'll see how it finishes though.

Not 1, all of them. We played as entire bands. Here are my votes.
1. What Else.
Very fun game. You guys are very fun to parody. I enjoyed ripping-off Carlos' style, as well as laughing my ### off and talking shop with Goodman. There were no major snaps, and it came right down to the wire. Plus it was a SK win!
2. 52
My first large game. It went pretty well, though I had to do a lot of mid-game touch-ups. Still it was another game that came down to the wire, and another SK win!
3. Comicstrip Slaughter
My first game period. It was rough around the edges, and it was hit by the YosiP fiasco, which tainted it for me. The town won, in a mid to large number. Still, I enjoyed doing the write-ups, and Snoopy was a lot of fun.
4. Homestar Runner
My most recent game was a failure in my eyes. I didn't have the hang of the janitor, and the write-ups were way too bland for the topic material. The phases were way too long, and way too many pms were late or absent. There was very little discussion on the thread, and it made it an easy win for the mafia. Overall I'm dissapointed.

Yes, I know that (I had signed up for the game). The running joke is just that every time I've had a shot at being a Beatle (or in this case The Beatles) things have gone awry, whether it be luck of the draw or, y'know, someone dunk-tanking me. :devious:

I hope someone critiques my games.
1)Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers---I consider it my best. Everybody was very active and had a lot of fun, it seemed.
2)80's Movie Mafia--A few people really loved it. However, it did take a long time for people to PM me actions. I'm not completely sure why. But, the posts in the thread were a lot some days(some days not so much) and those who were active seemed to really enjoy themselves. It being my 3rd game, I think I did it well from a mod standpoint.
3)Scrubs--My first game. It was small, and I gave away who the mafia was instantly, so it was horribly modded, but everyone seemed to have fun.

Fun games. I got a bit frustrated with Teen Titans game... nothing I can pick out in general, I think it was more because I didn't have a very active role in the game... even though I last damn near to the end.

5 Disney Games and Gay Bar....
1) Disney 4 - the plot twists, it came down to the end, I had the most fun writing it and no one really knew until the end. Although I don't think anyone was guessing.
2) Gay Bar Mafia - it was just a fun game with little to no drama. Everyone stayed in their roles and had a good time with it. It was campy and fun and has inspired me to do it again.
3) Disney 1 - the original and the princess mafia was awesome. But I was still learning and had townies with too powerful roles (Belle's, the unstoppable Malificent) and it really was lopsided against the Mafia's.
4) Disney 2 - Animal Kingdom - the Spring Sprite resurrecting bad guys just threw everything into the air. I don't think it was fun for the players who had to endure the ??? but I had no idea what to do because if I said a bad guy had come back, they would have automatically lynched a bad guy! That and the Hunter's mafia was under powered completely.
5) Disney 3 - revealed way too much in the write ups and bad luck on the mafia gave the Town a sweeping victory.
6) Disney 5 - it is still going on but I am really disappointed in Disney 5. It had such potential to be awesome but it has turned into a cluster because of luck on the mafia and the town's inability to do anything (and constantly targeting each other). Poor decisions made by the Town on so many things has made this my least favorite game. It just became unbearable.
4) Disney 2 - Animal Kingdom was utterlu

I've seen games where the don makes most of the choices, but the rest of the mafia gives a ton of input as to who other players are, what their powers are, and what role claims they can use. It's a shame your mafia group was so disjointed. I think everyone really could have felt like more of a cohesive team with just a bit more communication.

Absolutely. I don't point fingers (or blame anyone), because I was one of those people, just at times I felt left out.

My games...
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; I enjoyed coming up with the roles and doing the write-ups, I think the game really had some momentum early, but it stalled when I ran into a stone wall called malaware... I do think I made some of the roles to complicated. 2.5/5
Gilligan's Island; I had no clue what I wanted to do with this game... I had just watched a 24 hour marathon on Nick and thought it would be fun. Turn out was good. Roles were simple. I still need to work on my write-ups. 2/5
Superman: Emperor Joker; Biggest game so far... and might be the one I've had the most fun with. ?/5

Absolutely. I don't point fingers (or blame anyone), because I was one of those people, just at times I felt left out.
Any suggestions as to how I could encourage that in future games? Should I make each mafia member send in their actions separately? I don't ever want anyone in my games to feel unincluded.
I hate having mafia members send in their actions separately because it becomes disjointed - in Disney 2, one of the hunters had actually roleblocked his colleague (to which I responded...are you sure you want to roleblock Gaston???).
It is a balance - which is why i encourage pro-boards!

I'm defiantly in the minority with this but, that's what I hope happens in games I moderate, I won't say they can't have there don phone it, I just think it gives a player that extra incentive to pay attention.
I checked in on our secret message board daily and voted when I could but at times I wish I had more to add, sure I could have made stuff up and talked a bit more, but that's not my play style.

Each mafia since Transformers has had a private board. It was a huge help with TF, but not so much with the others.
Yeah, i got that in BYOBG mafia, mafia's not paying attention and only sending in their targets after i pm them for them, only to find out that they're targetting their own teammates for death, bizarre :tired:

Pfft. Gaston decorates the feeble role blocking attempt with antlers. Seriously, I was out of that game on, like, day two. I think I had every tracker in town on me and we had zero coordination. Proboards are definitely the way to go. Don gets to send in the actions, but the mafia players get to provide all the input they want.

1) Animafiacs. Even though it was a "Fly by the seat of your pants" sort of modding, I enjoyed it, and so did the players.
2)&3) The Two Guitar Gods games. Kinda hard to differentiate some of the characters in the write-ups, but fun games nonetheless.
4) Battletech Death to Mercenaries. Balance issues, and it would've worked SOOOO much better if more of the players were familiar with the setting.

The problem I have with this is that then the Don gets complete control. In theory, the don should have the final say. But I have been in games where I have offered an opinion, tried to talk strategy, only to be completly ignored and have my action sent in for me in a way that completly screws what I had in mind.
When the Don has that much control it turns into Town vs The Don and his Pawns, instead of Town vs Mafia.
When I am a non-don, I enjoy the game more when I have more active part and don't get excluded.

When I am don I always try and exercise an open forum and only assert final control if a mafia member is unresponsive or does not care

I've had fun in almost all the games I've played in, for many different reasons.
I'll mention the ones I didn't like, but I will say why...and the reasons are specific, so take this as constructive criticism! These reasons are also personal so I will try to explain my feelings
My least favorite was CarlosMucha's 70s and 80s TV Mafia, for the dual whammy: An early death, but I also had a crummy role. I started as a (recruitable into another) mafia of one, with the power to only kill (possibly) every other night by a bomb (of all things) that could be disarmed. I was annoyed that my "character" was actually a team, but that I had only one power when compared to other players that had multiples. My role actually depressed me!
I think the game *was* balanced, but not from my initial perspective. Carlos however had two other GREAT games, that I enjoyed TREMENDOUSLY even though I didn't stand much chance of winning (being in a weakish mafia in What If/Elseworlds and getting recruited into a mafia that I thought had already exposed all its members in Horror!)
The What Else mafia became fun for me only after I got killed (and turned into a Serial Killer!) I literally had no reason to initially participate on the thread (since the cops were being quiet) and the mods were very sneaky and implied that my death in the game would have terrible consequences for the town if I died...I assumed that I was a Princess! When I became the SK, I had to act quick since I was obviously still in the game I couldn't allow either the Vigilante or the Mafia know what really happened! <- This was basically two games for me, and the last few days/nights were really intense and made up for the first part.
I've had a lot of fun in other games, whether I was town/mafia/recruited...or whether I lived or died. I have really appreciated the effort mods put into the games. Thank You. I'm definitely cutting back on my play, but the last six months have been tremendous fun.

Thing is, I'll try to participate. But the don will overrule me without even saying anything. Because they don't need too. Heck, if the don sent in all actions, and the goons sent the same actions, the mod could ask the which the don would prefer. Thats happened to me, and most of the time the don lets the goon choose his own way. I just don't like the power being taken from my hands.

I can see things both ways. I prefer the don to send in my actions, as long as the don lets me know what we all did....unfortunately if the don *forgets* to send in actions....
My most recent don-ship was in Suicide Squad...unfortunately I think I forgot to tell my team what their actions were on a couple of nights! Since I was Amanda Waller I could rationalize it a little: I didn't even find out two of my mafias actual powers until the game ended! IIRC I actually asked the mafia if any of them were uncomfortable playing as mafia members and if the rest of us could thow them under a bus on day 2:devious:

Battletech....it would've worked SOOOO much better if more of the players were familiar with the setting.
One good thing that has come out of this is the realization that lack of knowledge about a game from the participants can really hurt a game.
Granted, there are themes I didn't know jack about (MST3K and to a lesser extent Utena) that I've now become interested in because of the game. That doesn't change the fact that I've done quite a bit of stumbling in them and the same goes for Battletech from what I heard.
Now, I'm about to be running a game with a theme that 85% of the players have no experience with and another 10% have only seen once or twice. But all these games have made me realized that that can be a problem so I've worked my butt off to go around it.
I've made a video clip for every character who is in the game and another 10 or so for characters that aren't in the game so that people can look at the writeup, see a name and go see who that character is immediately and so that the mafia can find other characters to claim as.
Hopefully that will make up for the lack of knowledge that everyone has right now because I really really want this game to go well. :nervous:

This brings up a good point. WHen I mod, I accept the actions from the don, however, if I get a target from a mafia member and it differs from that of the Don, then I take the individual mafia member's target instead. It makes it so each player truly has a choice about what they want to do. That's what this game is about.
That was the best thing.

Only because I keep dieing as town.
If I'm still alive past night 6 and I haven't been constantly silenced and don't have a power that makes me immune to night kill, I'm probably mafia.
Guitar Gods 2 was the last time I won as town and I didn't know what was going on at all in that game. Definately didn't do much to contribute to the win, much fun as I had.

I've liked every game I've been in except my first two.
Seriously, My first game. Night 1. Yes I'm going to actually play mafia! now to read the writeup... I'm dead? It's already over? Better sign up for another one.
Marvel BYOC. Yes, I'm the Matador! My first REAL game! Hahaha! Time to go to school.
Alright, logging in! Let's see what's happening... What? 1 away from majority??? OMG. Defend myself, FAILURE! Lynched and I was not mafia!

When I've been Don... I always try and solicit input from other people before sending in actions. Unfortunately, then you get into a problem of activity from other players. I.e. your fellow scum aren't really doing anything, so you HAVE to be more "you will do X" instead of "what do you think?"
My favorite games... well, I did like Battletech a lot. Just because, well, I'm a Battletech geek, so it was nice to have a setting that I could really get into. I also liked Ignatz's JLA game a lot, just because the Phantom Stranger was an awesome role for posing wacky Fortune Cookie statements. :)

You know, Dark Knight is shaping up to be my top game, actually.
Hmmmmm, Mario Kart may be in my top two games, i'm not really sure, i think at the end things got a bit anticlimactic but for the majority of it i was loving the madness, i also like it because of the experimental gameplay involved which people actually kept up with :)
What Else 1 is still probably what i consider my number 1 game to mod but on my own Mario Kart Mafia could be my number 1 solo mafia

My 5 Games:
Back to the Future Part IV: I have a LOT of experience with this game but that was my first game and I really didt'n know exactly how much "give away" in the write ups or not. I have a lot of plot twists but it was a learning game for me.
What If/Elseworlds: My favorite game. I know that resurrectors sucks, and I learn this with this game. But I LOVE the story of that game. Love so much and some players have so much fun that for me that was the BEST game that I make.
70's-80's TV Series: LOT of new things, love it the game. it was more balanced and Mafia players have a great change. Again: a LOT of new kind of roles.
HORROR Movies: The bird of Freddy! :p a powert that must be on any Mafia game. Again, the story was something that I love, with Demian as the big bad guy and a lot of things happening with so many good characters acting in the story. I hope people had have so much fun as I had.
Crisis on Infinite Earths: Lot of NEW things, the multiples Earths was something that I spend so much time trying to figure out how to make that work. and it work! I have that idea in so many different ways that I'm happy that this game work. Also I'm happy that even if this was the first game based in a story that everybody knows, even with that I could figure out a way to a lot of mysterys on the game (Like Krona, Mr. Mind, the uknow character with the Omega BeaMs, etc).
What more is coming in the future? I have a idea but I don't know :cheeky:... I should NOT be doing more games!! :p
I'd be tempted to put TV as my #1 game. It was a lot of fun and I think everyone enjoyed themselves.

Ranking my games:
Silver Age Superamn: so-so-- too town-friendly, and too much vanilla plus a couple of ill-conceived roles. Twon won handily with help from some luck, but it was still slanted in their favor.
Satellite JLA vs Injustice Gang: Better, but a little straighforward and I think boring for some players. Game result was fairly close, with only three townies surviving.
Satellite JLA Murder: The best, although it went off the rails at the very end. Kept people confused but very engaged, and could have gone any way til pretty close ot the end. Most creative roles and the most amount of guessing/confusion among the players.
1. Vanilla Mafia I - I think because the idea was "new" here, people were willing to try more in this one. I have to say, I was very entertained by the game, and I was able to keep it running the whole time. I think the game lasted about a week or so. The town losing the cop on the Day 1 lynch gave the game some spice.
2. Vanilla Mafia II- re-balanced, but ultimately not as exciting as the first.
3. Vanilla Mafia III- Almost a disaster, and almost went the horrible route of DBZ. The silencer role made the game interesting, but ultimately deterred people. A modkill and a few participation reminders hurt as well.
4. DBZ- disaster. Horribly unbalanced (not that anyone would have found out), far too much in the writeups, roles not clearly defined before the game started, answered far too many questions from players, and, of course, ended the game prematurely due to time constraints.

I wasn't even in those games, and only read them weeks/months after the fact, but they were all truly entertaining threads, and gave great insight into the game that can be lost on players (like me) that rely too much on write-ups.
