You can just sign up at any game. Small or large their all fun. Probably starting in a 15-20 person game would be ideal for someone who is new though.

Unfortunately, we seem to be seeing the begining of several 30+ player games. :nervous:
My brother (Magoogles) is running a smaller one based on the Age of Apocalypse. (Very loosely. He already ran an AoA game where the only survivors were Mr. Sinister and Holocaust, and this is a continuation of that).
Obviously, it won't be as good as one of my games, but it is smaller then most. ;)

My game still is technically open, but will start soon.
Food mafia has 21 people so far. Max 25, but is in the process of getting started up.

here's what you do sign up for a game that JackofHearts, rokk_krinn and Magnito have signed up for, and just watch.

For a demonstration of how to lynch a townie, join a game with Robo-Onion, JoH2005 and hellskingpin. Maybe MSU.

Honestly, I'd suggest a larger game. In those games, there are enough people for you to lay low the first couple phases and just watch what's going on so you can get the hang of it. By the time day 3 or 4 starts, you should be able to figure out some things and get a feeling for who you can trust to help you through your first game.

I'm doing a FF7 game at some point, you should sign up to that.

I second this. The sad but true fact is people will often lynch the new guy. Reasoning if he's mafia they're good, if not, he really didn't understand how to play anyways.
In a low numbers game the newbie is much more likely to get bumped off by either mafia or lynched by town early in the game.

I don't know if a larger game is better. My first game was Disney 2 and that had a lot of players. 1st night I was captured and right after I was rescued I was killed. My second game was smaller (CSA) and I got an active power so I learned a little more. By my third game (Resident Evil) I got to be mafia and I did very well (until one of my teammates went off and never came back). I learned a lot from that one because I was teamed up with other players too. Same goes with running a game too. My first game was crammed full of everything I had seen in other games so I had recruiters, serial killers, masons, the works. Hell, I even had the town recruiting. It was a big mess and I thought I had lost some players forever and I had a hell of a time trying to balance that mess. Now I am a little better.;) :p
I guess what I'm trying to say is that everything is relative and hopefully people will help you as best they can.
Also, don't take it too seriously.

It's possible, I've had newbies as mafia before. The town never expects it.

Considering it's supposed to be random, I never expect anyone to be anything.

Heh, I was a Don in my very first mafia, though that was specific as the Mod knew I was a fairly big Doctor Who fan and needed a replacement for the Tenth Doctor.
And boy, was THAT a learning experience*!
* or, rather, boy did I really STINK at it. Though I did have some good moments.

It's not always random. Consider this game where I'm taking requests. Same thing for Sesame Street and TF I.

Which I guess explains how I, as a first time player, was don of the mafia in my first game - the Wild West (modded by sstralkowski.)
I'm getting ready to run a Thunderbolts mafia as soon as I find 5 more players. The game is to have 43 players, so there will be a lot going on. It might be a good learning experience, but it might also be highly confusing.

If by reverse mafia you mean bad guys being town and good guys being mafia, then no. In this one the idea is that the Decepticons got cocky after their victory on Cybertron and are now attacking Earth.

Making not so vague references to Mario was one of the most fun things about that game.
