Nope. That's why I stopped coming forward early when I have a cop-style role. I tried that for a few games in a row and promptly died on Night Two. Decided if folks didn't want to watch over the information gatherer, I wasn't going to up my "early date record" anymore than I needed to do so. :(

Sometimes I think the Doctors get overconfident that the Mafia won't hit an info-gatherer with the belief that said-gatherer will be protected or folks will be reverse-tracking. What they forget it's just as likely for the Mafia to, say, reverse-track in the hopes that even if their kill fails they'll find out why.

That and despite the power/prestige of the role...too many people neglect to send in their Doctor PM's. I know Melkhor used to tell me - after the games were over - that he was surprised by how often that happened in games he modded and I saw the same thing happen whenever I would mod. What? The ability to keep someone alive become so "bland" that people don't want to use it? Do we need a million twists on a power to get folks enthused?

I ended up as a doctor in about four games.

In the Ultimate Spider-Man game, I could "doctor" myself (and did so up until I had a confirmed townie to protect)...unfortunately I had very clearly outted myself as town (outting the unlynchable don in the process :P) and the (rather large) mafia came after me...luckily I was able to rez Spidey before they got me.

...but in other games where I've been the doc I always protected one of the last two player's on the master list until I could get a better informed target. It seems like the mafia goes after them (or players with short, easy names!) first....poor MSU!

Only in one game can I recall that I had a confirmed info gatherer to protect, because the player was very explicitly playing against the mafia. In many games I've seen cops be too indirect about their role, which to a non-informed (i.e. non-mason) doc looks indistinguishable from mafia disinformation.

From what I've noticed, players with the "Doctor" role, typically don't know how to play it. And to their credit, it's the second most difficult role in the game (the hardest being the serial killer). The only thing you know is to never roleclaim, and to always protect roleclaimed info gatherers.

And that makes the game pretty hard to play. For a lot of the players that join with the attitude of "Well, if I have time each day", they tend to drift off during the game. And some of the players that would normally pay attention, will actually start losing track of the game, due to their own lack of participation during the day phase. After all, a lot of doctors try not to be too helpful during the day phase, because the Mafia goes after info gatherers first, roleclaimed townies second, and useful day phase players third.

So, yeah, I can see how the Doctor role frequently turns up inactive players, or players that don't see a roleclaimed cop to protect.

In the end, it's like I said, though. There's no right way to play a doctor during the day phase. But the right way to play one at night, seems pretty straightforward...... :ermm:

I'd have to go back and check the thread, but the doctor was Leslie Thompson IIRC, maybe she was mad you got someone killed. I think the doctor was a true neutral (could win with either side).

Ah, I looked it up. Apparently you said you had a trap set. So the doctor would not have chosen to protect you, leaving you open to a mafia RB/arrest. Which is what we did.

I agree with a lot of your points. I have modded a lot of games now, and there are very few where the doctor was effective. I've seen a lot of doctors that I don't think were even reading the thread.

One of the reasons I put myself on "mafia hiatus" was to discuss the mechanics of mafia more freely. Only one game I've been in is still ongoing, and I don't think I could reveal anything about my role in that game if I tried (besides, I was NK-ed on Night 1, whine whine).

The point about Doctor's being a hard role is a very good one: When I'm the doc...I basically keep my trap shut. Posting on the thread either draws the attention of the mafia, or risks lynch-happy townies. Role-claiming (truthfully) as the doc doesn't really help since any cops are likely to waste a night investigating you (or worse, a suspicious vigilante will target you) not to mention you put yourself out as a big target.

I know that my mafias haven't always won, but we've almost always taken out the doc before the bitter end.

I was saying it could be better. The goofing around was fun, but there is also a lot of potential and different directions you can go with it. You can do complete silly things, you can do things that are confusing, or you can do things that seem like actual actions. Fake getting killed, fake killing someone, just mess with peoples heads. Thats what I want to see one of these times.

Not to be a downer, but I see this a lot and while this may not be the case, there is a very obvious reason that a lot of people don't think of when it comes to not being protected.

Either way, best not to point out to the mafia (outside the thread after your death no less) that the doctor is either dead or not being very smart (or being too agressive) about his targeting.

Just my thought, which is why when I complain about dieing, I never wonder out loud why I wasn't protected.

IIRC you may have gotten me into hot water in the past by talking outside the game (my second game ever, I was chosen as don and made a mistake sending in PMs. Someone complained about it in another thread, which then ended up getting quoted in the game thread, and someone was able to piece enough info together to start pointing fingers).

I'm just happy I lived as long as I did. I'm no good at being mafia. I hate lyning, even if it is a game.

I've kind of had a mafia chip on my mafia shoulder because of my recent mafia record...

FMA - lynched as a townie, very early in the game. Didn't want to claim as I had a protector role.
CoIE - killed on night one. Replaced another player and lynched day later by the town.
Transformers - Singled out day one for a "random" lynch. Despite the fact I was neutral, why the heck would you "randomly" go after someone who actively participates, much less possibly hit the doctor?
Satellite JLA I - killed early game (night 2 by Rokk?)
Satellite II - in the hot seat from day 1 (thanks - from my point of view - to baseless accusations from Get_1).
There's another ongoing game I'm in where someone attempted to kill me night 1. I'm glad they failed.

If I didn't know better, I'd say someone was holding a grudge against me. :p

At the very least, I tend to get lynched when I'm offline and unable to defend myself. Which just stinks.

get_1, I'm with 'mouse on this one... Commenting on the game is not a good idea. As mod I bite my tongue constantly not pointing out simple stuff, becuase that's part of the game. I hate to sound like I'm whining - but most of the occurances I mentioned happened within a 48 hour window. I think I came very close to 3 mafia deaths in one day. Understandably, I was a little irate. With time passed, I find it more amusing than anything. :laugh:

I think I actually did it once before that, but that may've been it.
