The world you live in is not the romanticized world of men in tights and scantily clad women stop psychotic masterminds from world domination. Those days have past. Following on the heels of a new government restriction on vigilantism, the superhero community has been torn apart. Some heroes refuse to sign up and become government tools, while others are forced to bring them in. Meanwhile the villain community has reacted like a bottle of shaken up soda. Some see this hero civil war as an opportunity to cash in. Villains are joining cape catcher teams for profit, revenge, or just plain fun. Others have rebuilt their once infamous villain gangs to run rampant on the country. The costumed adventurer community is in a state of emergency.
You may find yourself asking, where does this leave you? Well, you have decided that you can’t see eye to eye with either side of this war. Whether you’re a villain, a hero, or a young gun, you’re fed up with the way things are going. Instead of leaving the country like so many others, you’ve decided to seek out the secret society known only as The Mercenaries. The Mercenaries were once well known for their talents, but have since fallen by the wayside, until now. Like their name implies, they offer their services to the highest bidder. Whether that be President Hood’s Hero Registration Corp, or Lobster Man’s Society of Evil, The Mercenaries do the fist to face work better then anybody out there. You have personally been invited by a mystery recruiter to join their newest team. So here’s your chance to possible get rich, get even, or get inside.

-Alright, if you clicked on this, you’re interested in some role playing. I’ll be your loyal GM. For right now there are 5-6 open spots on the team. Those spots will go to those who I think are best suited to play, and who express the most interest. So if you want to play, just fill out the character info, I’ll review it, then I’ll pick my team! Good Luck, have fun and be creative!
Registering:
- Your character can be either a hero, villain, or a newbie to the costumed adventuring world.
-Try to give your character a coherent and precise back story. Any and all info on your character should be included in their bio. The more fleshed out your character is, the easier it will be to role play, and the easier it will be for me to come up with more accurate stories. This is important; a better story equals a better game.
Example:
Name: xxxxxxx
Alias (if any): xxxxxx
Date of Birth: 00/00/0000
Place of Birth:
Height: 0’0”
Weight: 000lbs
Backstory: When did your powers manifest? How? Did you lead a life of crime? Or heroism? Are you new to this whole thing? What led you to The Mercenaries? Etc.
Powers: Describe in detail the powers you have currently or powers you have had and have lost.
Physical Description: Not only hair, face, body type, etc. But does their body provide them with any advantages? Can they resist extreme temperatures?
Equipment: Does your character use any equipment?
Education: High school grad? College grad? From where?
Family: parents, brothers and sisters, etc.
Personality: How does this character act? What grinds his/her gears? What makes them laugh? etc.
Attributes:
-Attributes are the character’s raw stats. They are the backbone of how your character deals with situations in game. They can be increased through training, missions, and leveling up.
-Attributes are based on a point system. There is no maximum, but the minimum a stat can be is zero.
-Characters can start with up to 30 stat points. You do not have to use all 30 when creating your character. This is understandable as some characters may not be as powerful as others.
-Assign point values to the following attributes. Also, provide a little info as to why you chose that point value.
Strength: How strong is your character physically?
Intelligence: How smart is your character? This is entirely based on ‘book smarts’.
Agility: How agile is your character? Are they light on their feet?
Wits: How ‘street smart’ is your character? Are they cunning? Can they charm people with merely a few words?
Speed: How fast can your character run?
Accuracy: When making ranged attacks, how accurate is your character?
Health: How much damage can your character take? How durable are they?
Powers and Abilities:
-Based on the description of your characters powers I will give you two abilities. These abilities can perform a wide variety of functions from simple passive defensive, to complex telepathy.
-Example: You describe your hero as having ice manipulation powers. Two abilities I might grant you would be Icey Floors (something to slow your opponents) and Ice Spikes (an attack modifier).
-Most powers will be connected to a certain attribute or attributes. If they are, points from that attribute pool can be applied to the power to improve its success rate.
-Every so often, new powers will be awarded through a level up. Powers can also be attained through certain game play elements.
Game Play:
- Game play will be based on a simple system. Every so often the players will be confronted with a challenge. Players will then send me their actions, what they intend to do, along with the amount of points they are going to use from a given skill.
-Example: You want your character to jump over a fence. You would send me how many points from how ever many ability pools you think it would take for your character to hop the fence. Maybe you would send me 2 agility points and one strength point.
-Example 2: Sometimes you may need to combine attributes. Say you want to know what kind of bomb is on the floor in front of you. You might use 2 intelligence points for the science, and 2 wit points for the weapon part. Or you might use 4 health points to throw yourself on the bomb and absorb the blow… maybe….
-Points not used during the players move will be available for the enemies move. One player move and one enemy move constitute a round. Points are replenished every round.
-Example: If you spend those 2 agility points to jump over the fence and you have a total agility score of 4, then you would have 2 agility points left over for the enemy’s move. So say after you jump the fence, Tire Iron chucks a manhole cover at you. You would have those 2 extra points to dodge. If you had spent all four to jump the fence… it’s a good chance that manhole cover is going to hit you.
-Therefore it is a gamble on how many points you are willing to use. Do you go for a big hit? Or save your points for defense? Of course the more complex the action, the more points it is going to take, and most likely it will require points from many attributes.
-most important is your participation as players. The game will only give back as much as you put it. Plus it is much more helpful to me if you are descriptive in what you are trying to do.
-Remember, have fun and be creative. Think outside the box and who knows what will happen.
Leveling Up and Upgrading:
-I have full control over experience as GM. Experience will be given based on what the character can do versus what they do in the game. So a support character will get more points for a successful attack then a mainstream attacker (This of course will not be the only deciding factor, and it is not final). I promise I will be fair.
- Also power upgrades will become available to you after certain missions. After you have proven yourself worthy, The Mercenaries extensive catalogue of technology will be available to you. Through this, you can buy equipment that will provide you with certain powers or abilities (think feats). Maybe you’ll come across some sweet tech during a mission. As long as its not locked down, or important you don’t steal anything, that tech can be yours. Tech can also be traded amongst players, if both parties are willing.
-Extra attribute points and ability may be awarded upon leveling-up.
Knock Outs and Deaths:
-I decide when a character gets knocked out. This will be based on many in game factors, as well as the bio information you have given me. Once I see that a character has been damaged enough to warrant a knock-out, they will fall unconscious. They can no longer perform actions until they are healed or have adequate rest.
-Death. Rarely a character is beaten so badly that they are killed in battle. Or perhaps they sacrifice themselves for the good of mutant kind. Either way, if your character winds up biting the dust, I’ll allow you to enter a new one. Resurrections may occur…
Okay, I've looked over it a few times. But, if anything doesn't make any sense, or if you have any question ask away. If not, post some characters!

Sounds like fun.
Name: Henry Jack, formerly Johnathan Harrison
Alias: Behemoth
Date of Birth: 01/27/1985
Place of Birth: Chicago, IL
Height: 6’ 8"
Weight: 260 lbs
Backstory: John Harrison was a mutant, born with size changing abilities. He usually kept himself out of the public eye, not because he was afraid or anything. He just didn't like being the center of attention. At age 24, he became a bouncer and worked as hired muscle for local gangs.
After the registration conflict, Henry Jack (as he was now called) recieved an invitation to the Mercenaries. He accepted, realizing this was the most profitable course of action and took the name "Behemoth".
Powers: Jack can increase his body mass to up 20 feet tall. His strength and durability adjust likewise. At his normal size, he is still physically enhanced. He is also an adept street brawler.
Physical Description: Jack is caucasian, has short brown hair, brown eyes and a goatee beard. He is tall and muscular, but usually hunches. He wears a black t-shirt and black jeans. He has a tattoo of a black sun on his left shoulder.
Equipment: A pack of cigarettes and a silver zippo lighter.
Education: High school graduate.
Family: Marcus Harrison (father, deceased), Stephanie Harrison (mother), Rachel Harrison (younger sister)
Personality: Jack is an easygoing character. He's usually silent, but not in a "brooding loner" kind of way. He'll answer if someone talks to him, but won't usually go out of his way to be sociable.
Stats
Strength: 8 (It's his power.)
Intelligence: 3 (Not the smartest tool in the shed, but not an idiot either.)
Agility: 1 (Far too big to dodge things.)
Wits: 5 (He has experience dealing with people.)
Speed: 2 (Average speed.)
Accuracy: 5 (He knows how to fight.)
Health: 6 (He's a very tough guy.)

Name: Howard Long (So he claims)
Alias: Diamond Jim
Date of Birth: 2/1/1960
Place of Birth: Minneapolis, MN
Height: 5’7”
Weight: 190 lbs
Backstory: Howard’s not quite sure when his powers showed up, they just came to him. Not quite sure how to best use them, he applied for a police academy upon graduating from high school, and though he managed to get through, he soon found it was not the best place for him to use them, especially since it was kind of hard to put them to their best use when he was trying to keep them from being revealed to the public. So he resigned his position at the earliest opportunity, and went on to become a private eye.
Though not a superhero in the traditional sense, his involvement with the superhero community, and his powers put him at odds with the government mandated registration issue. After avoiding getting directly involved with it and the current conflict (instead preferring to do what he does best – investigate), he was offered an invitation by The Mercenaries. While he was conflicted by this, he agreed to join, seeing it as the best opportunity he had not only to protect his own hide from those who’d like to bring him in, but also as a tremendous opportunity to gain access to any number of organizations and hopefully find the right piece to the puzzle of events that had made things go so wrong from the old days. Maybe if he finds that piece, he can help fix things.
Powers: Diamond Jim has powers that are best described as being “associated with diamonds”, though this is stretching the idea of what he can actually do. First, his body is incredibly durable, capable of taking immense hits without being damaged, and can be exposed to extreme heat without a problem. Second, he can create a small ‘reflective field’ around himself (he later learned to extend this around his clothing and items on him), effectively giving him invisibility, though he can still be seen in the right light or if he’s standing still while someone concentrates hard enough.
Physical Description: Nothing overly out of the ordinary about him. Black eyes, medium-cut bronze hair with a mustache (which is beginning to gray up), and thick eyebrows. Decently built body, which won’t be turning heads any time soon (when he’s visible, that is), but he’s certainly not out of shape. Highly durable body that not only can take a hit, but may even cause pain to the person who hit him. Standard “Costume” consists of a trench coat, hat, and gloves (With the other standard clothing items, of course).
Equipment: Pistol, hand held microphone and camera, duct tape, lighter.
Education: Police Academy (barely passed)
Family: Doesn’t like to talk about it a whole lot. His Parents are both still alive, and he’s got a couple siblings and assorted relatives here and there.
Personality: Diamond Jim is an investigator who likes to act on instinct and his gut. He generally appears to be sociable, yet he’s more than happy to let other people do the talking while he himself doesn’t say a whole lot about himself unless he has to, in which case he may choose to use misdirection. Can be a quick talker and is apt at improvising stuff on the spot as need be. The more he can learn, the better. Good natured, but knows that good intentions aren’t the solution, instead willing to go down a darker path if it’ll ultimately bring about the best results, so long as its not too dark a path. Tries to pay attention to detail, though may pick apart at something just a bit too much sometimes.
Strength: 2 – His powers don’t grant him any extra strength.
Intelligence: 5 – He's studied up, but he's no genius.
Agility: 1 - He’s got a little agility, but he won’t be doing many summersaults.
Wits: 7 – He needs to be able to investigate
Speed: 2 – About average human, you know?
Accuracy: 3 – Never was as great a shot as he’d like to be.
Health: 10 – One of the main powers granted to him.

Name: Robert Whitney
Alias (if any): Void
Date of Birth: 03/31/1856
Place of Birth: Topeka, Kansas
Height: 6'0
Weight: 180 lbs
Backstory: Robert Whitney was born on the same day the treaty of paris was signed. For most of his childhood he never noticed anything special about himself. He lived a normal life with his family, one brother and a mom and dad. About the time he turned 15 he began to notice odd... occurences. Sometimes he would hear voices that no one else seemed to notice. Shadows darted in and out of his vision. He didn't really understand what was going on and he wasn't sure he wanted to. Then.. everything changed.
Eliab Whitney was 2 years Roberts senior. The two brothers were very close. They did everything together. Except for the morning of June 2nd 1872. Eliab had been wanting to go hunting for a while when one morning he decided to go off by himself for a bit to do just that. Rob had thought it odd when his brother didn't show up for dinner. After he didn't show for supper panic began to set in. They never did find the body.
Rob was in shock. His best friend was taken from him and he didn't know how to react. He retreated to his room for days. He didn't eat, he didn't sleep, he just sat there on his bed.
Then he came out. He wasn't the same, no. But he was talking again. His family knew something was up but nevered dare inquire further. Only he knew the truth.
Approximately 6 days after the dissapearance Eliab came back. No one could see him, no one would ever know that robert could channel spirits.
Reunited with his brother Robert began to practice his skills. Infused with his bothers spirit energy he was able to overcome many physical limitations such as aging.
With his brother guiding him Rob became a formidable wielder of spirit energy. Over the decades he has become a master of his art. Years of experience have granted him knowledge beyond any mere man. Taking on the mantle of Shade Robert became a vigilante. He would hunt down "villains" and drain their spirit energy (effectively killing them). After many, many years of soul hunting Shade grew bored. It seemed there was nothing left to learn. Determined to find inspiration he cut off all contact with the outside world and left on a voyage. While travelling Shade recieved a mysterious message. Eager to find some purpose he jumped at the chance to join these "mercenaries".
Powers: Shade can communicate with spirits. He can also command spirit energy to perform a wide array of skills. such as draining spirit energy, minor telekinesis, firing psychic bolts etc...
His brother who resides in him can create spirit shields which will stop most mystic energies. (Two main abilities would be spirit attacks and his brother's spirit shield.)
Physical Description: Physically Robert looks like an average white male. His overloaded spirit energy causes him to ignoe any effects of aging. He also heals from wounds quicker then normal.
Equipment: Nothing worth noting.
Education: Decades of studying every subject imaginable.
Family: Robert's parents are dead. His brother is dead as well but his spirit currently resides within robert.
Personality: Robert is an introvert. He generally fights for good but does so in an agressive way sometimes. He would not hesitate to kill someone if he believed they should die.
Strength: 4 Average strength
Intelligence: 9 One of the smartest humans currently living.
Agility: 2 Not very agile at all.
Wits: 2 Years of isolation and personal study have reduced Shade's skills at socialization. He also tends to think logically rather then in a clever way.
Speed: 2
Accuracy: 6 Very accuate with spirit attacks.
Health: 5 Not much more then an average human.

Name: Won Hu
Alias: Monkey
Date of Birth: 4/1/1981
Place of Birth: Somewhere in the southern regions of rural China
Height: 5’ 3”
Weight: 147 lbs
Backstory: They were known as the “Black 12”. A gang of 12 people with supernatural powers associated with the Chinese zodiac, brought together by the one known as the Dragon. Whether working for themselves or for others, they were a team that was not to be underestimated.
Monkey himself was one of the eleven found by Dragon, and after he used what is believed to be an ancient artifact of extraterrestrial origin to give Monkey his powers, he joined the team.
However, even the Black 12 were not untouched by the troubles of the Superhero civil war. One member was killed and two more went MIA, forcing Dragon to disband the team, giving them instructions to disperse and not to make contact with one another until such time as he saw fit for them to rise again, at which point he would contact them.
Obeying their leader, they made themselves hard to find, their current locations and situations unknown to one another. As for Monkey, he was located and contacted by the Mercenaries, and lacking anywhere else to go, agreed.
Powers: The emergence of his powers, being associated with the monkey, have given him super agility and enhanced athleticism. He could easily compete as an Olympic gymnast, and would probably wipe the floor with the competition. While he can’t stick to surfaces, he generally is able to use his powers to easily climb up any surface that could theoretically be climbed unaided, and in record time, too. Can also squeeze into places that would normally get a person his size stuck.
Physical Description: Chinese ethnicity, with dark short-cut hair and a clean shaven, longer face. Has a slight gangly appearance, and looks taller than he really is. Has a tattoo of the “Black 12” symbol on the back of his right shoulder.
Equipment: Retractable/Telescopic Bo Staff (can change in size from 1 to 5 feet) with a small grabber claw on each end.
Education: High School Graduate
Family: Living relatives believed to all be dead, remaining members of the “Black 12” make up his adopted family (current locations unknown)
Personality: Devious and mischievous, Monkey generally does not get along well with others, as sooner or later, he’s almost guaranteed to do something that will annoy others to no end. Highly curious. Doesn’t care a lot for the well being of others, with the exception of his adopted “family”.
Strength: 2 – Nothing too special.
Intelligence: 3 – Again, nothing too special.
Agility: 10 – Could literally jump circles around your average human.
Wits: 6 – Mischievous little bugger.
Speed: 4 – Decent runner.
Accuracy: 2 – Generally a close combat fighter.
Health: 3 – He may be hard to hit, but manage to hit him hard and it’ll probably stick.

Name: Shane Cooper
Alias: Heavyweight
Date of Birth: 11/20/1980
Place of Birth: Portland, OR
Height: 6’ 9"
Weight: 190 lbs
Backstory: Shane Cooper was the star running back for the Oregon Ducks. Rated the top Running Back in the state by Mel Kiper Jr., and bein ranked in the top 5 for Speed, he was certainly the Big Man on Campus. although he wasn't the smartest man around, he could easily get out of tough situations both on and off the field.
However, the one thing that Shane did not possess was strength. He could barely bench 180, and was not considered someone who could break out of tackles. Many thought the only way someone would draft him in the first round was if he could build more muscle and show he had upper body strength.
One day, however, while in the weight room, he managed to bench 200 pounds...like it was a mere 4 pounds! He kept going up and up, and suddenly was able to bench 400 pounds like it was 8 pounds! News spread like wildfire, and various accusations spread about steroid use or other such medical enhancements. Shane needed to find the answer.
Consulting various physicians, Shane discovered that he was born with the mutant gene, and his powers had manifested late. This revelation had him banned from the football team, and had government officials banging on his door. After wounding a police officer, Shane fled Oregon, and remained at large for 7 years, only to be approached by a far more appealing unit...The Mercenaries.
Powers: Shane is not actually super strong. Rather, by touching an object, he reduces its mass and weight, to a fiftieth of its original mass and weight. So, if something weighed 400 pounds, he could lift it as if it were 8 pounds.
Shane is also an exceptional athlete, with blistering speed and lightning fast reflexes from nearly 12 years of playing football, baseball, and running track.
Physical Description: Shane is currently 28, and is a tall, white male. He has dark brown hair, and routinely wears a black t-shirt with a Green or Yellow "O" for his college, and jeans. He has a short beard.
Equipment: Carries nothing, and after 7 years being on the run from the law has adapted to eating very little.
Education: High school graduate, and 3 years of college completed.
Family: Ryan Cooper (Father), Rebecca Lyons Cooper (Mother), Kyle Cooper (Brother - Junior in High School)
Personality: Shane is routinely angry at society. After losing a probable draft selection, and having not seen his family or his fiance in 7 years, he has become angry and bitter. He still maintains a smile, but deep down he feels horrible resentment.
Stats
Strength: 10 (only when using powers)
Intelligence: 2 (not the brightest in terms of book smarts)
Agility: 4 (Running back for 12 years, ran track, played baseball)
Wits: 3 (Can figure out of some tough situations if the need be)
Speed: 5 (Running back for 12 years, ran track, played baseball)
Accuracy: 1 (doesn't have any ranged capabilities to speak of)

Toying with the idea of making a non-powered "costumed athlete" type. At what point do the stats start drifting into the superhuman range? For example: how many strength points can I use before I become superhumanly strong?

Since there isn't a max to the point values, there isn't really a 'human range'. I toyed with the idea of putting a point cap on teh stats, but in the end I scrapped the idea. However, if things start getting out of hand, things could be 'retconned'....
Its entirely up to you and your character. For example, you and say The Hulk (if he were to exist in this game) may have the same amount of strength points. However, since Hulk is Hulk, whenever he uses his strength points its going to be more effective. This is why a back story and character development is important.
That being said, you don't have to spend all 30 points initially.

Not only does Dottmen's power suit prevent him from shrinking into oblivion
it gives him some incredible ability. First being the ability to withstand enormous amounts of pressure and capable of absorbing huge amounts of damage. Such as being crushed, by a foot.
Another benefit that the suit does is makes him extremely nimble, capable of of great speeds.

It looks like psychohippie wanted in, and I would like for a few more people to toss some characters in the ring, so I'm thinking of leaving it open a few more days.

Name: Trevor Hamilton
Alias: Average Trevor
Date of Birth: 9/1/77
Place of Birth: Shaftsbury, England
Height: 6’ 0"
Weight: 180 lbs
Backstory: Trevors father Glen makes the worlds most delicious potato salad, some think the amazing flavour and texture come from years of experience but really the secret lies in one very special ingredient, an ingredient that has nothing to do with Trevor's powers but has everything to do with a fine barbeque side-dish. Trevor's powers come from his mother's side of the family, the average side. For years his mother's people have been very average, slowly building up the genetic pre-disposition to be the perfect average specimen.
Trevor is average at everything, at first that may not sound like much, but if you are a glass half-full sort you will realize that being average at everything means that he is not bad at anything. He can build an average spaceship, write an average opera, run an average Iron Man challenge in an average time, he may not excel at anything but he can do everything, and do an average job at it.
Powers: he can do everything and anything, somewhat well.
Physical Description: he is of average age, height and weight, he is actually the guy you picture when you picture a guy named Joe except being british his name is Trevor.
Equipment: Just your usual stuff: jeans, t-shirt, cell phone, maybe some matches or a pen.
Education: He has an average knowledge of all subjects.
Family: Father Glen (he has a lovely mustache) mother Jennifer, 1.5 siblings Rachel (she is really hefty)
Personality: just a regular average guy

Alright, here is the final line-up for the game. If your character didn't get in, stay tuned, there is always the possibility of reinforcements being needed.
- Diamond Jim
- Osprey
- Void
- Dottman James
- Heavyweight
Stay tuned, I should be PMing you your two powers soon. Your powers, like everything else in this game, are up to you to share. Maybe it isn't always best to be a team player...
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. To be completely honest this is one big experiment for me, so if something doesn't seem right, question it! I promise you I won't take offense to anything, I'm just looking to make a fun game, and I think input from the players will help.

Name: Dottmen James
Alias: None
Date of Birth: May, 24, 1969
Place of Birth: Maine, USA
Height: 6'
Weight: 200
Backstory: Dottmen James headed up a team of geologists, affectionately known within the scientific community by the name of “rock maggots.” A name given to them after finding what appeared to be a 'space' maggot inside a piece of comet that crashed into the Earth.
When Dottmen James and his Rock Maggots shuttled to an orbiting space station to study a comet dub #12, which they believed would house more of these space maggots. Dottmen gets an unexpected surprise when the comet erratically changes course. Powers: None.
Equipment: Specifically designed suit (virtually indestructible, capable of withstanding enormous heats, colds and pressures) and equipment (tools and weapons.)
Education: Dottmen James isn’t what you would call a normal scientist. Considered one of the best football players to come out of college in years and assured a #1 spot in the pro football draft. Space Jawa

Raiserb1ade

Darkseid Sr.
One day, however, while in the weight room, he managed to bench 200 pounds...like it was 10! He kept going up and up, and suddenly was able to bench 400 pounds like it was 20 pounds!
Rather, by touching an object, he reduces its mass and weight, to a twentieth of its original mass and weight. So, if something weighed 400 pounds, he could lift it as if it were 20 pounds.
Shane is also an exceptional athlete, with blistering speed and lightning fast reflexes from nearly 12 years of playing football, baseball, and running track.
Physical Description: Shane is currently 28, and is a tall, white male. He had dark brown hair, and routinely wears a black t-shirt with a Green or Yellow "O" for his college, and jeans. He was a short beard.
After losing a probably draft selection, and having not seen his family or his fiance in 7 years, he has become angry and bitter.
Accuracy: 1 (doesn't have any ranged capabilities to speak of)
Health: 5 (regular human in terms of this)
