Who is your favorite NFL player of all time?
For me: JOE MONTANA (4th Quarter comeback KING)

My favorite is Dan Marino. He's what got me into Football (playing as him and his super fast release in Tecmo Bowl, and Super Techmo Bowl)

Brett Favre.
As a Defense guy I go with "Samurai" Mike Singletary.

Actually, my favorite on Tecmo Bowl was Bo Jackson. Bo Jackson left, Bo Jackson right. Almost guaranteed touchdown. Man, I loved that game. :)

Jerry Rice.
I got to watch him live burn the Atlanta Falcons and Charles Dimry for 5 TDs (Montana threw 6) in a single game. Plus that great Monday Night performance against the Minnesota Vikings , and the Superbowl where they smashed the San Diego Chargers. He looked so smooth on those slants and was always a threat.

Easily, Barry Sanders. Followed very closely by the amazing Steve Smith (CAR).

Barry Sanders is probably my favorite Running Back of all time. He was so much fun to watch.
You knew that every single game he was going to bust off a 70+ yard TD run. You couldn't stop it, you couldn't avoid it, at best you delayed it for a while. Yet sooner or later boom! He was off like a shot down the field. He was greased lightning in a bottle, I loved it.
Previously someone mentioned Bo Jackson, I used to rack up 600-800 yards a game with Barry Sanders. My Lions never threw a single pass in their 18-0 Superbowl Championship run.

That's because they had the greatest Quarter Back to ever play the game, with the greatest Wide Reciever of all time, a killer defense (one of the best corners ever with Ronnie Lott), and a solid running game. They were the best team in the game (although the Giants are pretty awesome, with Phil Sims, Dave Megget, and Lawerance Taylor).

Randal Cunningham. He used to go toe to toe with Steve Young for best QB.

"Noone embodied Carl Sandburg's poem Chicago more than Walter Payton." Narration, Pure Payton NFL Films
"He was the best overall football player ever." Mike Ditka
"You entered the game with one goal, not to be stiff-armed by Walter."
"There was always one play that he'd dive completely over the top of the pile. He'd fly."
He was the best, both on and off the field. There is a reason that the Man of the Year Award for the NFL is named for him. Noone gave more to his team, his city, and his community both as an active player and after retiring. Walter Payton was and will always be a hero in my eyes.
I always point to him when my son asks about sports heroes. I tell him that it wasn't Walter's greatness on the field that made him "Sweetness;" but his greatest gift was his ability to care for others. Whatever my son does with his life; I tell him to give as much as he can as Walter did, and he'll never be disappointed in life.
I had the pleasure of meeting him once; and he had such a profound influence on me that I try to do whatever I do with as much passion for it as Walter had for football; and his fellow man.
Sure, Emmitt Smith has surpassed his rushing record, but if Walter had the line Smith did?
That record would never, and I do mean never; would of been broken.

Ronnie Lott should've been a safety. Can't remember the CBs back then, Keena Turner was also back there...he responded to a fan mail of mine :)

Looking back at all of the running styles, game tapes, and whatnot I'd have to go Jim Brown. You don't get more dominant than Jim Brown. It's just not possible. The best running back to every play the game.

KC Chiefs Derrick Thomas. Imagine where he might be on the All-Time Sacks list had his time not been tragically cut short. He was the whole reason I even enjoyed watching football.

Man I always forget about that guy. Ronnie Lott was a beast. Man could he lay the smack down on a receiver coming across the middle. Definitely a close #2 behind DT
My team is the Pittsburgh Steelers, but I'd have to say my favorite would have to be Dan Marino.
While I never saw them play, I have deep respect for some of the older greats such as Dick Butkus and Deacon Jones. Those guys were animals and played th game the way it should be played.
Walter Payton, for all the reasons given:

I'm going to go a bit off the wall.
Robert Smith, of the Minnesota Vikings. Just for knowing when to hang them up and do something else. And he was an underrated reason why the Vikings offense was as devastating as it was for that late 90s stretch.
(And besides, my friends and I would always sing the Robert Smith song from the South Park "MechaBarbara" Season 1 episode when he got a touchdown.)
