View Full Version : The WIN MY BOOK Trivia Contest
Well I hate to be a whiner but I did think that was the "twist" you were throwing in there - making it almost 100% accurate but taking the name of a different individual to catch us off-guard (as I almost put real until I remembered something was off about the name).
On the other hand, I don't want TAK and reddy punished because I'm being nit-pickity.
Sorry about the fuss. :/
It's not whining at all--you bring up a legitimate point and the mistake WAS mine. I'll try to figure out a fair solution by tomorrow.

I'm not going to complain if you give a pass on that one. I am going to complain if I don't hear a reference to a frog's name in this episode of Our Miss Brooks I'm listening to.
Here's the deal for the mistake I made that fooled Rokk on the real/fake plot question:
I'm going to post another comic book plot (having once again randomly determined whether to make it real or fake). This is for Rokk only, as a do-over for the last one:
The Meteors are flying to play in the World Series, arrogantly confident they will win in four straight games. Suddenly, their jet is caught in a storm, then lands in Hell. The Devil challenges them to a baseball game, with their souls forfeit to him if they lose. Four demons appear to act as umpires.
The Devil is a one-man team. He pitches, then instantly teleports to the catcher's position to catch the pitch. When someone hits a grounder to third, he teleports there to snag it and throw it to first, then teleport to first to catch it.
In the bottom of the first, the Devil leads off with a home run. After that, the game is scoreless until the bottom of the eighth.
The manager of the Meteors has an idea. He has the pitcher intentionally walk the Devil. Even with his teleportation power, he can't be in two places at once. The umpire announces there will be a forfeit unless he has a batter on the plate within a minute.
The Devil takes a long lead, hoping to be picked off. The pitcher throws the ball to first and the first baseman tags him, but the umpire calls safe. The Devil's tail was still touching the base, held there by the first baseman's spiked shoe.
The Devil must forfeit the game. The Meteors are teleported back to their jet and the manager wonders if it was all a dream. But then he finds the Devil's scorecard lying on the floor at his feet.
Remember--this one is for Rokk only as a do-over. He must still answer his question for this round as well.
Hope this is okay with everyone.
It's not whining at all--you bring up a legitimate point and the mistake WAS mine. I'll try to figure out a fair solution by tomorrow.

Oh, come on! It's Philip Boynton's pet frog. New born babies know this one. Tribesmen still living in the Amazon basin untouched by civilization know this one. Aliens who have never visited Earth know this one. Ask any random person on the street about Philip Boynton's pet frog and they'll say "Of course I know that. Who doesn't?" ;)
Even I know this one~! And I'm eliminated.
Too bad, cause if I had been asked, "What is Readyeddy's favorite color?", then I would have gladly swapped.

Question #1: Cliff was recruited in "Mobsmen on the Spot".
Redo Question: Hmm...now I know the basic plot of the story is true as I was a huge fan of "Strange Sports Stories" and that was their lead-off story once the feature got its' own series. My only dilemma is I'm nowhere near my comics so I can't see if you're tripping me up by changing the name of the team but as it currently stands I vote Real.

I honestly halfway expected you to try to get back at me by changing the name of the team (though I faintly remembered Meteors as that was fairly standard comic sports name of the time). :)
On a related note, I highly recommend "Strange Sports Stories" - some of which were easily collected in one of those DC Blue Ribbon digests at one point - to folks. Some surprisingly nice gems in them. Nothing long or involving but, heck, who doesn't enjoy a story about gnomes playing tenpins or someone facing a ghostly goalie (well before Jason ever was created).

Just to clarify for future Real/Fake rounds, the plot will always be either completely real or completely fake. I won't simply change a name on a real plot and then call it fake.

Aaargh! I thought this would be easier then the last one but it's not. Plus I have less time then everybody else because I lost internet access for two and a half days. So far I've found four actors with ties to two out of the three including Boris Karloff and Lionel Atwill.
Eureka! J. Carrol Naish played Adram the shopkeeper in "Think Fast Mr. Moto", played Sun Yat Ming in "The Hatchet Man" also known as "The Honourable Mr. Wong" and played Charlie Chan on television.
And here my first thought had been Keye Luke.
Everybody has correct answers this time around.
reddyeddy?, J. Carroll Naish also appeared in "Charlie Chan at the Circus." He was one of two possible answers. You could have gone with Keye Luke, as he played Lee Chan ("number one son") in a bunch of Chan movies, portrayed Lee again in the cross-over movie "Mr. Moto's Gamble," and played Mr. Wong in "Phantom of Chinatown."
Anyways, here's the next set of questions. The deadline is Thursday by 3 pm:

Everybody's got the correct answers again, so I'll go ahead and post the next round:
Which is another of the dreaded "Fake or Real" comic book plot rounds.
Is the following comic book plot real or fake? Remember, I roll a die each time I do this to determine whether to go real or fake, so there is no pattern based on past plots.
Also, the plot is either completely real or completely fake. If I get the proper name of a minor character wrong, that does NOT invalidate an otherwise real plot. (Yes, I'm looking at YOU, Rokk. :p)
There have been several mysterious deaths in the city recently. Despite a summer heat wave, several men have been found frozen to death without apparent cause.
The Human Torch and Toro discover one of the bodies and investigate. They soon learn that all the dead men were members of an expedition that explored the Sahara desert several years before.
They question one of the three surviving members of the expedition. He explains that the expedition had discovered a valuable ruby in an ancient Moorish ruin. Since none of the men had family, they had established a tontine--an agreement to invest the funds that came from selling the ruby. Each man collects their share of the interest, but when one of them dies, the profits are then divided among the surviving members. The last surviving member gets it all.
After explaining all this, the man drinks from a bottle of brandy. He collapses and begins to freeze. The Torch and Toro use their powers to raise his body temperature and save him.
The man states that one of the other surviving members is a scientist who had been working on experiments in controlling body temperatures. Undoubtably, some secret formula for causing men to freeze had been placed in the brandy.
The Torch and Toro fly to the scientist's home. But they find HIM dead, frozen. The Torch finds a footprint outside one of the windows, with a scar in the heal showing clearly.
They fly to the last member's home. They find him there and examine his shoe, finding the scar. He has killed the scientist and stolen the formula to do in the other members. He sprays the Torch and Toro with a canister containing the formula, cancelling their powers.
The two heroes begin to freeze. The Torch, through pure willpower, manages to flame on. He heats up Toro, then they run down and arrest the killer.
Is it real or fake? The deadline is Thursday at 3 pm.

I kept wondering if my .sig was going to tip you in the direction but glad to hear you found help anyway. :)
I didn't even think to look at your sig. I was wasting time trying to figure out if that DaVinci Code nonsense dealt with time travel. I basically had a mutual acquaintance nudge me in the right direction.
For some reason I've never gotten too wrapped up in Dr. Who and I gave up on that Mafia game stuff when the one time I tried to do it the threads would be closed every time I looked at them. Plus I couldn't follow what was going on when they weren't.
Here's the next questions. The deadline remains Monday at 3 pm:
Rokk Krinn: Who beat up Pat Novak on a regular basis?
:disappoinreadyeddy: What important event happened in Bryant’s Gap?

Well There seem to be two events, the ambush that led to the creation of the Lone Ranger and the final showdown with Butch Cavendish. One of those has to be what you were looking for.

Ol' Pat got regularly slapped around by Police Inspector Hellman (good ol' Raymond Burr).
FINAL ANSWER
readyeddy--was your answer a final one?

I guess, Though I'm not a 100 percent sure you wanted two answers.

It was one of those questions where either would have been correct, so you are correct.
As is Rokk Krinn.
And I'M OUT OF TRIVIA QUESTIONS. You guys have burned through everything I prepared without either of you getting eliminated. It's a tie. You both win a signed copy of my book.
THE CONTEST IS OVER: ROKK KRINN AND READYEDDY ARE THE CO-WINNERS!!!!
(Of course, since ready had one frowny face, I'll have to rip half the pages out of his copy.)
PM me a mailing address at your convenience. It's been 15 days since my publisher told me the book was at the printers and it would be out in 2 or 3 weeks. Hopefully, that means any day now. I'll mail you out your copies within a few days of my receiving them.

You could just mail them each 1/2 a book. That will show them.

Congrats to the winners. I will have to hunt down a copy when it comes out.
Kalel21, if I buy a copy and PM you my address, would you send me a signed tip-in page?

I may have to share my copy with you since you nudged me toward the Dr. Who answer. That's right; sad to say, Rokk's got the cleaner win as far as I know. Though AlienFlanders' help was within Kal's rules.

I'd be happy to. You can even send me your copy to sign if you'd rather and I'll mail it back to you signed. How ever you want to do it is fine by me.

So I'll be sending a copy to Rokk and a copy to readyeddy out by early next week.
Or at least I'll be sending a copy to Rokk if HE TAKES A MOMENT TO PM ME A MAILING ADDRESS!!!!!!!

The books to the new winners will be in the mail either tomorrow or early next week.
The winners' copies of the book are in the mail as of Saturday afternoon.
Remember, those of you who played and didn't win may (if you haven't already) PM me with a mailing address and get a set of old-time radio shows as a consolation prize.
You could just mail your signature, so when we all buy our copies, we could just tape it in, and, viola!,instant autographed copy.

You don't even have to tape it in, just use the signature as a bookmark, voila! ALL your books are signed.

I didn't know Kalel wrote "Sense & Sensability."
I got my OTR disks yesturday & I'm thrilled.
Did you include the Lone Ranger episode where he met Teddy Roosevelt, or am I thinking about Scrooge McDuck?
Its too bad the WWII disc didn't have the Lux version of "Five Graves To Cairo."
On the SciFi disk, theres "Donovan's Brain" which I think is one of the best OTR episodes ever.
The Superman & Batman disc has "The Dead Voice" which has a better Robin origin story than what I've read. It seems Dick Grayson's aunt was in the French Underground and a racketeer was blackmailing Dick's parents or else he'd rat her out to the Nazis. When they refused to pay is when they had their "accident."

Gee whiz, I mailed them Saturday and they reached Chicago by Monday? Including that disc of Superman episodes must have granted the package Hypersonic Speed. :p

Well, I've got it lined up in my reading rotation. I have to finish my copy of Shadows over Baker Street and then a light Western then I'll get to your book.
