My next book--Radio by the Book: Adaptations of Literature & Fiction on the Airwaves--is being published this fall. You can click on the link in my signature for more information about it.

So I am running a trivia contest with a signed copy of the book going to the winner.

The contest is open for 10 contestants. Questions will cover old-time radio, comics, old movies and classic television.

THE RULES:

Questions will be posted on Mondays and Thursdays around 3 pm Eastern time. These dates/times also act as a deadline for answering the previous question. Not answering counts as a wrong answer.

Every player is given his/her own individual question. Players MAY trade questions any time before the deadline. Both players must post that they are making the trade.

Players may research the questions. Yes, you may use Google to try to find the answer.

A player is eliminated when he/she has two wrong answers. (Not two in a row--just a total of two wrong answers.)

When we are down to one player--he/she wins. I'll send the winner a copy of my book as soon as it's published.

IF YOU ARE NOT PLAYING--feel free to kibbitz and mock the players, but please DO NOT post answers. (If you want to PM players with any information, that's fine. Just don't publically post anything.)

First come, first serve for signing up. If we have enough people interested in playing, I'll post the first questions this Thursday.

I will post the first round of questions on Wednesday, with a Monday deadline for posting an answer. After that, I'll stick to a Monday & Thursday schedule for the deadlines.

Kalel21
06/03/2008, 10:02
To clarify how the contest will work:

Tomorrow, I'll post the first round of questions. The post will look like this:

Ignatz Mouse: Who is editor of the Daily Planet?

Rokk Krinn: Who wrote The Big Sleep?

...and so on until all players each have a question (though, hopefully, the real questions will be a tad bit harder.)

Everyone will have until Monday afternoon to post an answer. Remember, two players can mutually agree to trade questions by posting their desire to do so.

Starting Monday, new questions will be posted Monday & Thursday afternoons. These times also represent the deadlines for answers to the last question.

You can edit a post containing your answer if you want. Answers aren't considered final until the day of the deadline.

Okay, here's the first round of questions. The deadline is Monday, 3 pm Eastern time.

Ignatz Mouse: You have an appointment with famed criminal attorney Perry Mason. When you walk into his office, who is the first person you are likely to see?

batfink: Who killed Casper Gutman?

Rokk Krinn: The cannonball that took off Long John Silver’s leg also wounded another member of Captain Flint’s crew. Who was this and what was the nature of his injury?

CheeseWiz: This actor portrayed Sherlock Holmes in 1938, then later portrayed Professor Moriarty in the mid 1950s. Who was he?

reddyeddy?: What member of the Superman Family was originally created on The Adventures of Superman radio show?

Darkseid Sr.: Of Franco, Pinkley, Maggot and Jefferson: Which of them died first?

Antipathy: Jack Benny carried on a long-running “fued” with another famous radio comedian. Who was Jack’s nemesis?

theanalogkid: What role playing game expanded 19th Century European imperialism to the surfaces of Mars and Venus?

hail eris: What action earned Scotty a commendation for innovative tactics from Captain Kirk?
Scotty beams Kirk and Spock out of a gladiator arena that was previously being broadcast on planet-wide TV. The commendation is for his knack of being the only member of the blasted crew who can remember the prime directive. Scotty knocks out power to the planet in question (how he does that, I can't quite remember), so the transporter escape isn't captured on camera.

Okay, here's the first round of questions. The deadline is Monday, 3 pm Eastern time.

CheeseWiz: This actor portrayed Sherlock Holmes in 1938, then later portrayed Professor Moriarty in the mid 1950s. Who was he?

Wow. You really had me. My first instinct was Basil Rathbone. Thankfully, I double-checked my answer, as it was WRONG.

If I've done my research, Orson Welles is the correct answer, having played Holmes in a 1938 'Mercury Theater on the Air' production and then cast as Holmes' nemesis during a 1952 BBC run of the 'Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'.

Fingers Crossed.

Kalel21
06/09/2008, 14:49
I'm a little early, but it seems unlikely that anyone will jump in with a last-minute answer change, so here goes.

Seven of you had correct answers. Three of you were WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!!!:

Ignatz Mouse—the first person you see when you enter Mason’s office is not likely to be Della Street (who was Perry’s confidential secretary), but Gertie (full name: Gertrude Lude), Perry’s receptionist/switchboard operator.

batfink: Gutman was not killed by Joel Cairo, but by Wilmer Cook, the young thug. This happens “off-screen” in the original novel, though I don’t believe it happens in the Bogart movie.

Darkseid, Sr: Good guess, but Pinkley was killed by a German soldier moments before Maggot was gunned down.

So you three are now each saddled with one wrong answer. One more wrong answer will eliminate you.

Here’s the next set of questions. The deadline is Thursday, approximately 3 pm Eastern.

:(Ignatz Mouse: What actor has played Commissioner Gordon, Archie Andrews and Superboy?

:(batfink: Four actors played Frankenstein’s Monster for Universal Pictures, starting with Frankenstein (1931) and ending with Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948). Who are those four actors?

Rokk Krinn: What famous detective once traveled from Lakehurst, NJ to Berlin, Germany aboard the zeppelin Hindenburg?

CheeseWiz: From which prison did Edmund Dantes escape?

reddyeddy?: Which of Sherlock Holmes’ cases involved a poisonous snake known as the “swamp adder?”

:(Darkseid Sr.: How did Scrooge McDuck earn his first dime?

Antipathy: What kind of tank was the original “Haunted Tank?”

theanalogkid: Jay Little Bear was a member of what two commando groups during World War II?

hail eris: Who drove a bowie knife into Dracula’s heart?

Antipathy may have thought by answering my question he had traded with me. If so, I don't want him penalized for what may have been me miscommunicating intent; that's why I slipped the answer to his question into my official answer.

Would you allow a switch just to make sure there isn't a "loss" for him because of that?

Gee whiz, because I'm offering a prize for this contest, I think I gotta be mean and nasty and stick pretty close to the rules.

The rules in the first post on the thread state that both players have to post their desire to trade (not just answer another person's question--which is why I asked for a clarification when he did that.) So Antipathy still needs to post an answer to his original question before 3 pm to avoid a loss. Either that or confirm that he does want to trade (at which point I will agree you have both submitted correct answers.)

Sorry--I appreciate your good sportsmanship in this. But rules is rules.

Antipathy

Kalel21

Well, that's everyone then. And you all have the correct answers, so no one earns another "frowny face" this time. Also, this means I might as well post the final results now rather than wait until 3.

By the way, did anyone have to actual research any of the last questions, or did you all just know?

Here's the next batch of questions. The deadline is Monday, 3 pm Eastern:

:disappoinIgnatz Mouse: Under what circumstances were Balthus and Slasher killed?

:disappoinbatfink: In the movie Destroy All Monsters, which monster attacked Moscow?

Rokk Krinn: What initials did Sherlock Holmes form on the wall of his apartment with bullet holes?

reddyeddy?: Match the city up with the appropriate private eye:

1. San Francisco
2. Miami
3. Los Angeles

a. Michael Shayne
b. Sam Spade
c. Philip Marlowe

:disappoinDarkseid Sr.: Whom did the Iron Major consider to be his greatest enemy?

Antipathy: This actor played both Sherlock Holmes and the Saint during the Golden Age of Radio. Who was he?

I froze for a second on this one, especially when Batfink said it was easy. That, and I wanted the Phantom of the Opera question.

Now I'm glad my book is still scheduled for a November release--it may very well take that long to whittle you all down to a single winner.

Here's the next batch of questions:

:disappoinIgnatz Mouse: Whose business card reads “Have Gun—Will Travel?”

:disappoinbatfink: What comic strip character has been played by Walter Matthau, Don Rickles and Robert Wagner?

Rokk Krinn: Who killed Penthesila?

reddyeddy?: What is the name of the raced of winged men who live on Caspak?

:disappoinDarkseid Sr.: He was a sailor, then a doctor, then a slave, then a pirate, then a governor. Who was he?

The deadline, as usual, is Thurday by 3 pm Eastern.

Mr. Wilson from Dennis The Menace. I was positive about Walter Matthau & Don Rickles, but had to research Robert Wagner.
Wow, from Alexander Mundy(" It Takes A Thief") to Mr. Wilson. What is the world coming to. :speechles

Mr. Wilson could take Alexander Mundy in a fight. Anyone "trained" by Dennis the Menace can handle anything else life throws at him.

The deadline, as usual, is Thurday by 3 pm Eastern.

Well, I haven't heard back from hail yet, so I had to do some digging. Miss Piggy's last name is Lee, Apparently, her full name is Miss Pigathius Lee. I'm glad this is an open book exam, otherwise I would have failed with guessing 'Piggy Sue'.

That means the prize will be available some months earlier than I expected. You all need to start providing wrong answers so we can narrow the field down to a single winner. :cheeky:

06/19/2008, 15:58
Well, the deadline has arrived and I'm afraid three of our players have not submitted answers. That means Darkseid Sr. is eliminated, while Antipathy & hail eris both rack up one wrong answer.

The answers to their questions are:

He was a sailor, then a doctor, then a slave, then a pirate, then a governor. Who was he? --That would be Peter Blood from Captain Blood. The question applies both to Raphael Sabatini's original novel and the Erroll Flynn movie.

According to the original novel: Other than the language of the apes, what language did Tarzan first learn to speak?--Though Tarzan taught himself to read and write English during his childhood (using an alphabet picture book and a dictionary he found in his father's cabin), the first human language he learned to speak was French. Taught to him by French Navy officer Paul D'Arnot after Tarzan rescued him from cannibals.

In his very first animated cartoon appearance, with whom did Popeye the sailor dance?--Betty Boop.

So here are the next round of questions. Deadline is Monday, 3 pm Eastern:

:disappoinIgnatz Mouse: What weapon did Pvt. Kirby usually carry throughout most of the TV series in which that character appeared?

:disappoinbatfink: Dick Tracy’s first case involved him getting evidence to use against what criminal?

The protagonist, the Continental Op, was hired by the San Francisco office of the Continental Dective Agency. This was hard, as I ashamedly have never been too much of a classic mystery fan (It didn't help that this was a short story, written under a psuedonym, the main character didn't have a name, and every search I ran sent me to the "Maltese Falcon'). batfink's shot in the dark hit the target. General Norton was a reoccuring character in the "Haunted Tank" stories published in 1971-1972. He was indeed based on Patton.

Oddball's Sherman did destroy both the Tigers.

This time around, we are having a surprise "Which comic book plot is fake?" round. (We will return to a fresh set of indiviudal questions on Thursday.)

This time, you must simply vote whether you think the following comic book plot is real or fake:

Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson are taking a cross-country drive. They arrive in a city to see the local cops beating someone up for speaking out against the Mayor. They investigate and soon learn that the Mayor has fired all the honest cops and officials, then hired a local racketeer's thugs to fill those positions.

Batman and Robin quickly take a hand, rescuing an honest reformer from "arrest." They then intercept a truck smuggling narcotics and smash a slot machine racket. Then they start picking off the local cops one by one at night, taking them prisoner.

Since the newspaper is also controlled by the Mayor, Robin organizes some local kids to print flyers calling the citizens to a mass meeting. The former honest cops take the lead in an attack on City Hall and the police department, capturing the thugs. Batman and Robin personally stop the Mayor and the chief racketeer when those criminals attempt to flee. The city is free again.

Is it real or is it fake? You have until Thursday at 3 pm to vote.

I'll get back to you later today. I don't know either answer.

Guessing, I'd go with Wild Bill, as he's known for packing a sawed off shotgun.

I'd also take a stab at Sam Gamgee, for your question, although with the funky narrative of Tolkien, it's hard for the casual reader to know what parts happen first (i.e. did the battle of Pelenor feilds happen concurrently with the events at Cirith Ungol?).

I have to do some research.

I think the scene was removed from the original screenplay.

I think the scene was removed from the original screenplay.

Wow. That's actually kinda important. If the crew started out with X number of people, just because a scene is cut doesn't take away from the fact that there are still going to be that many less crewmembers at the end of the flick. How does one account for them, unless it is explicitly stated in the narrative?

Also, wasn't there a swamp scene in the original that was removed that Jackson put into his version that he too ultimately removed??

Oh, bother.

Dusting off my copy of Lord of the Rings, and flipping through it, I would still say that Sam is the first hobbit to slay an Orc, though it was much earlier, in Khazad-dum, rather than in the tower of Cirith Ungol.

I'm still very uncertain if this is the answer, but I hope it at least points one in the right direction.

I should be ashamed of myself, having eaten at the Eagle and Child pub in Oxford, and paid respects at Tolkien's resting place.

The answer comes from a line of movie dialogue. Also, keep in mind that everyone who fell off the log died, whether or not we got to see them eaten by the spiders.

There was a spider-pit scene that Jackson's crew recreated for a special edition release of the original, if that's what you're thinking of here.

(There's another "log/swamp/chasm" scene that's in Jackson's movie and is by far my favourite part...I've watched it so many times it's embarrassing.)

Well, you all have correct answers again. Yes, Sam was the first Hobbit to whack an orc--he did do so in Moria, during the tussle around Balin's tomb (and got a cut on his forehead for his trouble).

Carl Denham does confirm a dozen dead sailors while on stage in New York, when he's introducting Driscoll to the audience. Also, if you go frame-by-frame when the group is marching through the jungle, you can count 12 sailors along with Denham and Driscoll. (Not that I know anyone geeky enough to do that. :noid:) A character in Son of Kong also mentions the crew body count.

So here's the next round of questions. The deadline is Monday at 3 pm:

According to this website: http://users.aol.com/the86floor/comics/list.html

Doc Savage has been featured in the Street and Smith the Shadow pulp magazine a total of 66 times. However, this information doesn't tell me if they teamed up in those issues (or what issues, if any, the Shadow was featured in Doc Savage pulps).

I just got back from the European Heroclix Championships in Madrid, just a bit ago, and I'm exhausted. So, hopefully this information is correct, and I'm still in the game.

Right now, I'm off to bed. Seeya!

I'm afraid that Cheesewiz is out--the list he links to a list of Shadow comics, not the original pulp novels. Even there, the two characters never crossed over and teamed up. Despite being published by the same company AND despite Doc Savage writer Lester Dent once penning a Shadow story, the two heroes never met each other. Their first team-up came decades later in DC Comics.

The rest of you had the correct answers, including AlienFlanders deducing his question was about the actors who voiced/played Ultra Magnus and the Skipper.

Here's the next round of questions. The deadline is 3 pm on Thursday:

I'm afraid that reddyeddy does rack up his first wrong answer--the first time Batman required emergency surgery was after a thug shoots him in Batman #2 (summer 1940). Since Alfred had not yet been introduced as a character, that left a very nervous Robin with the responsibility of digging the bullet out.

The rest of you had correct answers. But we now come to yet another of the "Which comic book plot is fake?" round:

Rokk Krinn

:disappoinreddyeddy?

:disappointheanalogkid

AlienFlanders

Jimmy Hunter is ashamed of his dad, who works at a boring job as the doorman in the Smallville movie theater. Jimmy thinks his dad is basically a failure at life.

Mr. Hunter is taking correspondence course art classes in order to improve himself, but Jimmy is not impressed by that.

Superboy flies back through time and photographs Mr. Hunter fighting in the war, but Jimmy is still unimpressed. It’s the fact that his dad is today only a lowly doorman that embarrasses him.

The movie theater is showing a movie called “The Rajah’s Treasure” and a real Rajah has allowed his diamond collection to be placed on display as a publicity stunt. Robbers raid the theater, knocking out Mr. Hunter and the guards and making off with the jewels. Mr. Hunter, though, is able to afterwards use his art skills to draw pictures of the thieves. When the drawings are published in the paper, the thieves decide Hunter is too dangerous a witness to leave around

The thieves kidnap Jimmy in order to lure his dad out of town & do away with him. But Hunter leaves behind a trail of gold buttons torn from his doorman’s uniform as he travels to where the thieves are holding his son. When Superboy deduces what happened to them, he is able to follow this trail and rescue the Hunters. Jimmy, impressed with his dad’s resourcefulness, begins to brag about him to everyone.

Is it real or is it fake? The deadline for voting is Monday at 3 pm.

Well, this one was REAL. It's a Superboy story from the 1950s, but the old DC Blue Ribbon Digest that reprints it does not credit the exact source, so I don't know what issue it originally came out in. (Though it was almost certainly in Adventure Comics.)

That means Rokk Krinn and AlienFlanders each score their first wrong answers. All four remaining players have one wrong answer each--all are one answer away from elimination and all the public shame and social scorn that comes with that.
