View Full Version : What constitutes a win for you?

I know that some people think surviving until the bitter end is a win in a mafia game, but do you ever feel like there's more to it than that?

I've always felt that mafia is a team sport, and take "you win with the town" to the extreme, so that even if I die in the game, and the town wins, I feel a little vindicated.

Likewise, if I'm mafia and get taken out early but the rest of my scum-buddies make it the whole 9 yards, I can get some satisfaction too (even though it's never happened :p).

So do you ever feel good if your actions helped steer the victory, and even if you dies but your team won would you count it as a win?

Or am I the only one in this line of thinking?

Sometimes. Depends on the game. Like in NML, when I was Robin and Mafia. I felt like I got a team win, because of the synergy and teamwork we used to get as far as we did. Then Shadow40 helped bring it home with brilliant play at the end. That felt like a team win. The closest to that I think I had to that feeling as a townie was the Peers' Crisis game, when I was the Joker, mandatory vigilante who had to kill Robin and Batman in order to win in addition to living. Killed Robin the first night, Batman died later on. Then I got killed by the serial killer for pointing out that SBP was in fact the SK and not the Joker who was just a vigilante.

Agreed. That was a great team win even though only Shadow made it til the end. Knocked it out of the park, he did. :)

But if I die on night 1 and my team goes on to win, I don't feel like I won by extension.

Yeah, there's definitely a line between actively assisting and *when* you die. I usually unsubscribe to a thread on night one or two when I die, and pay the game no more heed.

It's a given that some of the town has to die to root out the mafia.

If my faction wins, and I played a part in it I feel like I won (so GI Joe for instance).

It's the same for me, if I die early, then I pretty much stop paying attention. If I am in it for a while, then I will most likely continue to pay attention throughout the end.

I hate to sound like an overly-competitive type, but I don't feel -that- much consolation if my side wins and I didn't make it to the end. Yes, I'm happy they won but I don't count it as a win for myself whether I was helpful or not (so, yeah, laying out like 90% of the Cobra Team after Night One of G.I. Joe didn't make me feel like I'd won with the Joe team).

I do want my side to win though, whether I'm alive or not, so I don't exactly want to sacrifice, say, a fellow Town member over myself in a Mafia game.

On a related note, I also don't necessarily take much solace in certain other "non-win wins". I know back in JLA-2 when I was feeling like we'd flubbed any chance of any of the Mafia winning - my fault, really, for totally missing a power combo or two - MSU was trying to say he felt like we had "won" even if the Town did because we had run them ragged and got them to lynch two Cops. It was nice to think in those terms - and I certainly don't begrudge MSU for it (I wish I could be more like him) - but, frankly, it wasn't going to be that much consolation if I lost after getting so close. :)

(There are exceptions to the latter - I'm still quite happy with the original Arkham game, even if I didn't win it in the end.)

I try to kill everybody until I'm the only left. Even if I don't have a killing power. I hack into the game's code and win...

That was truly a team win. Without you finding out so many roles and JOH's leadership our team would have never won. It hurt losing ABF so early and having a dud in KlixKid. But GreatArelius1 and Biz lasted for a while if I remember right and we all wrecked havoc in No Man's Land.
