2008-2009 Realms Fantasy Football League

As Football Season rapidly approaches, I was wondering how much interest there would be in playing fantasy football again this year. If you are interested please sign up here. as of right now its free but if we get enough players we can all pitch in so money and maybe upgrade our league.

I have posted threads both here and in the Arcade, as I am not sure where we should set up-although here seems more logical

I run our office league on Yahoo, and have never been disappointed with it, if you guys are looking for a place to play. The stat-tracker upgrade's always been a flat 10 bucks a person. Probably cheaper if we buy it for the league. But outside of that, the whole thing is free. You get access to full stats, everything, without having to pay a dime. This will be my 5th year running one there, and I haven't been given a reason to look elsewhere.

Yahoo allows you to draft Defenses. Heck, I think they put that in by default.

You can also put in returners, particular defensive players, etc. It's all up to the commish.

And, again, that's before anyone's paying a dime.

If we use ESPN, I know it's not a loss, but I won't play. I can't afford that.

The stat tracker would be the only thing anyone would want, and it's far from essential. I mean, it tells you what your current score is, but that's before they do stat corrections Monday and Tuesday morning anyways.

Those without Stat tracker are only missing out on having an auto-refreshing page on their PC that tells them exactly where they are points-wise on game day. I'd argue it's something you don't need.

I mean, I've won 3 out of 4 years in my office league without it....

I've never played on FoxSports, and wouldn't have a problem playing there. Can't speak for anyone else, though.

People get so upset over yahoo, but it's just a luxury yo have stattracker. It updates daily, and I think we can all go 24 hours without seeing our scores. Like, I don't think it's worth downgrading in every single feature of fantasy sports, just to petition the fact that they make you pay for the luxury of Stattracker. My votes for yahoo.Foxsports screwed me, and Iceman, up last year.

Also, if for some reason we absolutely need up to the minute scoring, I can think of a couple dozen other fantasy sites I'd rather than Fox. I don't want get screwed up again by that dang site.

You don't have to pay a cent to play at yahoo! either, if you want the stattracker you get it, if not, it updates the following day just like FoxSports.

Foxsports didn't update for me on Saturdays, wouldn't let me make roster changes sometimes, locked up, and was a headache all around for not just me, but a few of us.

My vote is for Yahoo!, and guess what? Doesn't cost you a cent less you want it too.

I prefer ESPN or FoxSports (never had any issues with it) but Yahoo is ok. It just doesn't seem as "nice". And I know some people say it's easier to use or navigate but I've always found it to be the opposite. And for me live stats/updating is a big deal. I like to watch the games while having the scoreboards pulled up on my computer. I understand that doesn't matter to some people but to me it does. If we went with Yahoo I'd probably just pay to get the stat tracker.

On a lineup note, I've done leagues with Individual Defensive Players and it's just a bit much. I prefer just to select a team defense/special teams along with 1 QB, 2 RB, 2/3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K and a WR/RB position (in which case I'd only do 2 WR)... again just my preferences.

It looks like several people didn't have any luck getting the site to work. But I have no experience, and therefore, no problem with going this direction.

NFL.com has a nice interface and is easy to use... but it is NOT customizable at all. In other words you have to go with the set number of teams (I think it's 12), roster layouts and scoring system. But it does work really well.. it's just not flexible.

The live scoring doesn't bother me at ESPN.

The ability to see my player's stats, compare stats with players in free agency, and generally not having to cross-reference my lineup with stats I'm getting at other sites, is.

Last time we played there, it was the worst fantasy experience I ever had. I couldn't see my stats, I couldn't see much of anything. And even after paying 15 bucks, I still couldn't see them.

If they fixed it last year, great.

I can't play at FoxSports again, and Yahoo! is an issue for a few people. Hopefully we can scrounge up 10 more players and go 2 Leagues at Sportsline which is one of my favorite places.

AS for IDP's (Individual Defensive Players) there are many ways to go about it. Full 11 man D's, 2 DE's, 2 DT's, 3 LB's, 2 CB's, and 2 S's. Or you can just go with 4 DP's (of any kind). I love those leagues, play in 2 of them myself. If we end up doing that, then I vote for ESPN, it's the easiest to track them all in.

If we are just a basic league, I'd love a set-up like this:

2 RB's
2 WR
1 TE
1 Flex (TE,RB,WR)
1 K
1 Def

That flex position makes things really interesting.

Yea I think that Fox is out for most everyone, and the NFL/CBS (they share the same rules) are too.

So its between yahoo and ESPN, and it looks as though we can add up to 20 teams on ESPN also so lets choose between those OK

I just posted a big post about how Fox screwed me up last year and I can't even get on there now, but my internet went down awhile ago, so I won't bore you with it again.
If there are more spots available, I'd be down for it, as long as we're not doing it on Fox.

Team Defense. I think it is just easier. I have never done individuals and think it would just complicate things more....if it were a keeper league I might go for individual players.

Well once I have all the players signed up I'll randomly assign players to the league.. ability has nothing to do with it :p its all in how you draft....

Yes Team Def and ONE def player ie you can draft the bears defense and the Ray Lewis - I thought that might be fun and not as complex as keeping track of a whole def squad each week.

I have played in a few leagues before and have never drafted individual players for defense. I would like to be "broken in".

Well one Def player does not add too much complexity and allows for a little change up IMHO

Generally, where do the defensive players get picked in the draft? About what round?

Any round you want. I drafted London Fletcher as the overall #1 pick in a draft last year and still almost won the league. It really all depends on how many points they'll net you each week. If it's on par with other positions, they could go at any time. If their scoring is set to where they're virtually useless (like seems to happen in all ESPN leagues), then they'll go in the later rounds.

Oh no, in my ESPN league with IDP's (Full 11) they are definitely on par with the Offensive players. Having Demeco Ryans, Ernie Sims, and DJ Williams took my all the way to the Semi's in that league.

And see, that's how I like it too. I've been in leagues where most defensive players will get you about 1-3 pts. a week on average (when everyone else can get you double digits pretty easy). It's almost not even worth having them if that's all they're going to score you.

For the record, I've played with just having a defensive "team" and having defensive players and I like having a few players as well. Not an entire defense or anything, but two or three defensive players can make just enough difference to be really interesting.

Also, do we know when we plan on holding the draft?

That is a GREAT idea. I remember one year in another league we held the draft before preseason and there were several significant injuries in preseason that just killed several of our teams....

It's just something you have to prepare for. Rank your players. Study up now, rank them, then if you can't be there for the live draft, it'll pick up the best available and get all your positions filled. Test the draft out ahead of time too, do a mock draft, they're easy and fun.

honestly no point in do the draft this weekend, not all the teams have even registered, and add to that the fact that I will be out of town, but it makes no sense to draft so early, before the 1st preseason game b/c we will not know everyone who makes the squad or gets injured.

The 53 man rosters are set on Aug 30th I would say a draft occurring anytime the week of Aug 24th is the best choice. I also realize that not everyone will be able to make the live draft so that is why it is important to set your pick priorities before the draft occurs

I took out the little bit in the address that said "java=false" and it worked alright.
