ol_Dut's Secret Invasion by the Numbers!

Once again, it’s a completely different look at the latest HeroClix set, Secret Invasion. The dials, character cards and figure reviews only tell half of the story. Join me for a different and irreverent look at the latest HeroClix set. It’s time for Secret Invasion By the Numbers!

5000 – Once again we have but 5000 of the “Buy it by the Brick” figures to go around. Sure they may make more, but why risk it? The sad fact of the matter is if you don’t have your stuff mailed in by now it may already be too late.

250 – The highest point value of any figure in the set belongs to the mailaway Super Skrull: Illuminati. With loads of Outwit and Psychic Blast, four Special Powers and a Trait, SS:I certainly has a lot going on. Too bad he’s not going to fit very well onto too many 300 point teams.

174.99 – The amount in dollars paid for a Chase Susan Richards. Sure she’s a nifty figure, but holy smokes! While this isn’t quite in the same league as the Crisis Superman’s $250 initial price tag it’s by no means an amount to sneeze at. Currently her price tag resides just south of $100 which is great news for those who’ve pulled her, and not so nice news for those who are looking to trade for her or buy her outright.

139.95 – While some may debate whether or not blondes have more fun, it is a fact that the blonde Chase figure commands more cash. $139.95 is the highest amount paid for a Spider-Woman Chase figure. However, the longer the set is out, the more her price drops. As of this posting Ms. Drew is only really commanding somewhere around $60-70. While she’s come down in price, she’s still not to a point where I’d feel comfortable popping her off her base and replacing her with the vastly superior sculpt from Armor Wars. While only separated by a couple of sets the two figures are light-years apart in terms of quality. No wonder her price is tanking. This is one Chase figure that makes you want to run screaming!

110 – In words, the longest Special Power in the Secret Invasion set and it belongs to Psycho-Man. While it’s nowhere near as convoluted as Deadman’s “Possession” power, Psycho-Man’s “Control Box” still requires a couple of reads and a conversation or two in order to really put it to use.

98 – Special Powers are back in a big way and this is the number of them in Secret Invasion. For those keeping score that’s two less than were in DC’s Crisis set, but we’ve yet to see all of the dials and cards for the five LE figures and I think it’s a safe bet that there will be more than two Special Powers among them. That’ll put the final total at over 100; an impressive number, indeed.

75 – There are 62 figures available in boosters (including the Chases), one Brick figure, seven Starter figures which are a part of the SI set, and five LE figures bringing the total number of figures in this set to 75.

47 – This represents the total number of new figures in the set while 37% are remakes. Overall that’s not a bad mix, and is far superior to Alpha’s 100% remake ratio. Hopefully DC’s forthcoming Arkham Asylum set will have a similar 60/40 mix.

30 – Call it the base, the crescent or worse, all of the new figures have one but only 30, and I’m being very generous here, only 30 use that space as something other than a flat black void. Hercules has grass, Captain America has rubble, Ms. Marvel is perched on the smallest rock she could find, and so on. In total, 24 figures have something interesting to stand on while six are just hanging out on some “lumpy” blackness. The six “lumpy” folks I’m giving Wizkids the benefit of the doubt for are Kristoff, Magus, Malice, Spider-Slayer, Doom, and Immortus. In my opinion this number is way too small. If all figures are henceforth going to be stuck on these bases for ease of sculpting, assembly, stability or whatever, plain old flat black stuff isn’t going to cut it. At least make it look like Herc’s grass or a bit of sidewalk or something. I’ve logged exactly zero sculpting hours in my life but I’m pretty sure even I could sculpt a crescent-shaped hunk of sidewalk. And if I could, surely Wizkids’ pros could do that and more.

24 – The HeroClix rulebooks have swollen in size as of late. Granted, they haven’t grown to the proportions of an unabridged dictionary, but they’ve gotten pretty close. However, with Secret Invasion’s Fantastic Four Starter the rulebook shrank to an astoundingly diminutive 24 pages. Sure that makes for quick and easy reading, but please remember that while this book is small, the newly published “HeroClix Player Guides” will add well over 100 pages of additional rules information, errata and clarifications. It’ll take two men and a strong boy to carry all that down to the venue on game day. Ya win some, ya lose some.

20 – Either hope you pull one of the few figures with Probability Control or pack you luckiest dice because there are 20 figures with an 18 defense in this set. That’s slightly better than 25% of the set. Who makes the honor roll? They are: Yellowjacket, Skrull Yellowjacket, Arachne, Hercules, Captain America, Iron Man, Dr. Strange, Malice, Speedball, Doom, Spider-Girl, Namor, Adam Warlock, Magus, Gamora, Power Man and Iron Fist, Sentry, Super Skrull: Illuminati, Thing and Dr. Doom. Some of the names I’d expect, other surprise me a bit, but no matter how you slice it that’s an awful lot of folks that are going to be very hard to hit.

19 – The total number of known Traits in the set. Traits are relatively new on the scene, but this seems a pretty big number.

19 – Oddly enough, this is the number of errors in the set that have been corrected in the recent “HeroClix Players Guide” document. That’s a lot of errors. Clarifications are not included in this tally, nor are sculpt or paint errors. Simple little typos like “nvulnerability” instead of “Invulnerability” aren’t in the mix either. If we add them in, the number increases in a hurry, but I didn’t have the heart to finish counting it all up. I’m not pointing any fingers or trying to rally an angry mob or anything, all I know for certain is that if I submitted a finished product to my customers with that many defects I’d be facing disciplinary action up to and including termination. Put another way, I’d have a lot of time to catch up on my reading.

18 – The Fantastic Four Starter, which is a part of the Secret Invasion set, introduced this number of major rules changes including the big change to Telekinesis, a Giant’s ability to carry, the increased duration of Perplex and fliers no longer being able to shoot (or be shot at) when in base-to-base. For those players just starting the game at this point it’s no big deal, but for quite a number of veteran players these changes have spawned more than a few “What the?!” moments.

14 – In a game increasingly populated by figures with one or more Special Powers, there are a full 14 figures without any Special Powers love. Strangely enough, some of those figures like Gamora, Annihilus and Super Skrull: Avengers are among some of the best in the set. The end result leaves me wondering just how important Special Powers are and whether or not we really need so many of them. The have-nots include: Tarantula, Kristoff, She-Thing, Captain America, Lightspeed, Tombstone, Super Skrull: Avengers, Jarvis, Annihilus, Magus, Thor Girl, Super Skrull: X-Men, and Howard the Duck.

12 – Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” storyline is all about the Skrulls, and the Secret Invasion set has 12 Skrull flavored figures as a result. Is this too many or not enough? Only time will tell. Bendis could make the number skyrocket or a forthcoming retcon could reduce the number to zero. Who knows? Place your bets. But for now we’ve got: Jarvis, three Super Skrulls (X-Men, Avengers, Illuminati), Skrull Emperor, Susan Richards, Spider-Woman, Yellowjacket, Ms. Marvel, Dum Dum Dugan, Elektra and Captain Mar-Vell.

12 – SI could almost be subtitled “Revenge of the Nerds” as there are 12 figures with the Scientist Keyword. While none of them probably ever had such a colorful nickname as “Booger”, they do have fun names like Dr. Doom, Mr. Fantastic, Psycho-Man, Doctor Octopus, Mole Man, Morbius, Tarantula, Goliath, Iron Man, Frey Gargoyle, Yellowjacket and Spider-Man.

11.99 – The amount in dollars that a booster of Secret Invasion costs. Too bad this record high price is accompanied by a couple of huge steps backward with regard to sculpt and paint quality. When I hold any of these figures up next to anything from Fantastic Forces I get all kinds of weepy. Wizkids! Why have you forsaken me?! Get back on track ASAP!

11 – It’s Spy vs. Spy vs. Spy vs. Spy vs…well, you get the idea. There are a total of 11 figures in SI with the Spy Keyword making it one of the most popular in the set. To make a Spy team SI style, simply select from the following and season to taste: Sharon Carter, Skrull Yellowjacket, Skrull Ms. Marvel, Skrull Dum Dum Dugan, Captain Mar-vell, Skrull Captain Marvel, Skrull Elektra, Nick fury, Jarvis, Susan Richards and Spider-Woman.

8 – Back in the day, Elektra was everywhere. Then –poof –, she vanished like a puff of smoke for eight, count ‘em eight Marvel HeroClix sets. That’s a pretty protracted absence. Now she’s back and we have both a Skrull and human version of her to choose from.

7 – Pushing without taking damage is wonderful thing. Too bad the most common method of doing so, Willpower, doesn’t also reduce damage from attacks. Well, move over bacon, now there’s something meatier. Indomitable! Indomitable lasts for every click of life and allows a figure to not only push without taking damage, but allows a figure to have a damage reducing or damage avoiding power at the same time. Feel the power! This is exactly the kind of boost that tent-pole teams have needed for quite some time. Seven figures have this fancy ability that is certain to have a huge impact on the game. (Magus, Hercules, Skrull Elektra, Human Elektra, Doom, Skrull Ms. Marvel, and Ms. Marvel)

7 – Since their inception, Keywords have taken on a life of their own. Some are arbitrarily denied certain Keywords (Bishop?!), while other Keywords are everywhere. Not every figure has Keywords, but two figures, Namor and Iron Man have seven, the most of any figures in Secret Invasion.

6 – Martial Artists have been rather over-represented as well, but again SI only adds five to the fold. Howard the Duck, Iron Fist, Power Man and Iron Fist, Tarantula, Gamora and Elektra are the only new kung fu fighters, so it appears at this point at least that everybody isn’t doing it, contrary to what the song would have us believe.

5 – Teens used to be everywhere but SI only gave us five more. Hawkeye, Kristoff, Speedball, Spider-Girl and Thor Girl are all that was added to one of the biggest Keyword groups out there and it’s nice to see that reined in a bit.

4 – Skrulls can look like humans, but I’ve yet to see a human that looks like a Skrull…until now. SI has five figures that are "human" but do in fact look like Skrulls. They are: Yellowjacket, Ms. Marvel, Captain Mar-Vell, and Elektra to be precise. I’m not following the logic here. Perhaps a better plan would have been to make both versions look human since the Skrulls are shape-changers and can obviously pass for human since, according to Bendis, everybody and their brother is one these days.

4 – Special Powers are falling like rain, and this is the largest number of Special Powers possessed by one figure. Who holds the title? None other than the BibtB figure Super Skrull: Illuminati. Again. Did you mail in for yours yet?

4 – The highest number of times a character appears in Secret Invasion, a title proudly held by Susan Richards who is present as the chase figure, a soon to be released LE, a Starter figure and Malice.

4 – I’ve heard of stereotyping, but this is ridiculous. Four is the number of water-based figures in the set (Namor, Triton, Attuma and Atlantean Warrior) and all four are holding tridents. To heck with giving us fliers that look like they’re flying, let’s make sure we get a huge, unmistakable visual clue that these guys have the Dolphin speed symbol.

3.5 – The amount of time in hours it took me to get my Buy it by the Brick paperwork in the mail from the moment I opened my first booster. I’d have gotten it in the mail even faster if I wasn’t so hungry that I thought I was going to pass out and so as a result I lost 30 minutes because I had to eat. To compensate for that I sent my stuff in via Priority Mail.

3 – It’s been a long wait for some Spider-Man figures of the female variety and SI finally delivers the goods with three fan favorites: Arachne, Spider-Girl, and the Spider-Woman Chase figure. Now if we can just get the third Spider-Woman I’ll be happy.

3 – Dum Dum Dugan is well known in this set for some rather dubious reasons, but let’s add one more to the list. Skrully Dum Dum also has three Traits – the highest number of any figure in the set. Harvey Bullock was a pog, Dum Dum gets a 75 point figure with three Traits. Color me confused. Perhaps Arkham will rectify this situation.

3 – In a game where suddenly keywords mean so much, it’s odd that three figures (Impossible Man, Malice and Gravity) have nothing to offer in that regard. Skrully Elektra would have made the list as well if not for the recent errata so now she gets “Skrull” and “Spy” and thereby avoids the shame of being on this list. And really, did any of us need another reason to hate Gravity?

3 – Remember those 20 figures with an 18 defense? Well only three figures in SI have some Probability Control to help address that situation. Dr. Doom gets his later in his dial, but only Captain Mar-vell and Sentry have it at the top of their dials. Impossible Man can use the power, but only this finite group actually posses PC. Get used to saying (and hearing), “Ugg. I missed!”

2 – Well the unthinkable finally happened when this number of figures received the Mystics team ability. Doom and Mephisto usher in a new era in ‘Clix thanks to this spiffy TA jumping to the Marvel side of the fence. Now I’m left wondering how long it will take for a Batman-like TA to land in the Marvel Universe. Wouldn’t that make a great Marvel Knights TA?

2 – Love ‘em or hate ‘em, you’d better get used to ‘em. The fact that SI, a set that per the leaked Wizkids document wasn’t supposed to have any Chase Figures, actually had two chases serves as a testament to the fact that Wizkids is totally committed to them as a tool to sell more boosters. Susan Richards and Spider-Woman, while not the powerhouses that the Crisis Supermen were, are still very solid figures and are all too rare. When Chase Figures first arrived on the scene, their rarity was a predictable one per case. Bat Sentry, Giant Man and Steel all popped up with that amazing regularity and if you wanted one all you had to do was spring for the case of boosters. If you didn’t want to do that, there were enough of them out there that players could usually find one in trade without too much hassle. And isn’t that what the game should be about? Putting as many figures in the players’ hands as possible? I thought so. I’m not playing this game to have a box full of $100 figures, I’m playing this game to have a box full of as many different figures as I can. Isn’t that what everyone wants? Here’s to hoping Chase Figure rarity drops to one per case.

2 – Whether it’s a cost cutting maneuver or just a stylistic decision we’ll probably never know, but SI is the first regular HeroClix set to only have two different box art options. Judging by the previews we’ve seen of Arkham Asylum’s art, it seems safe to assume that the days of four different art options are over.

1 – Remember when it was announced that flight stands were going away but we were told not to worry because the new sculpts for fliers would be so dynamic that they would suggest flight? I sure do. However, out of 19 fliers in the set, only one really looks like he’s flying. Who’s that you may ask? None other than the Human Torch (Fantastic Four Starter #103). Some may make a case for the Sentry, but you could easily chalk that wisp of “smoke” up to too much Taco Bell. Others may say the much maligned Gravity looks like he’s flying, however he intimates flight no more so than any of the myriad figures posed leaping forward from some sort of rock or debris. Still others might try to make a case for Adam Warlock, and I might be inclined to agree if his sculpt didn’t so strongly seem to indicate that he’s just a bit mad and gone out to stomp around in some puddles and have a good mope. However, even if we’re feeling generous and allow the contested three in, we’re still only looking at four of 19 fliers sculpted in such a way to indicate flight. This has got to get better and fast. Lukcy for us most of Arkham’s denizens are ground-pounders.

1 – The number of figures that can be made completely hilarious with just twenty seconds and a pocket knife. They say that a journey of a thousand miles begins with but a single step, and if that’s true then a journey into modding can begin with a very simple single step as well. Grab your nearest MASS MASTER figure, scratch off the first “M” and bingo! Instant hilarity! Bonus points for painting all the white “cloudform” stuff brown. Whether you do it or not, though, you’ll never look at this little guy quite the same ever again. It may be juvenile, silly and perhaps just plain wrong, but this minor alteration has actually made playing the Power Pack a ton of fun for me.

0 – I’ve never been a big fan of Bystanders, and Event Dials, while novel and entertaining, are too easily ignored in approved play. SI gives us exactly none of each in booster packs although two ( Illuminati and Infinity Gauntlet) are available as prizes.

0 – Remember the day that the rules changed to prevent fliers from shooting or being shot at when in base-to-base with an enemy? Remember all of the hullabaloo about the Sharpshooter mechanic that would allow only certain figures to do just that? Well, to quote another old commercial, “Where’s the beef?” Keep waiting for it because Secret Invasion has precisely no figures with this particular brand of goodness. On the bright side, Combat Reflexes on fliers is golden for a few more months at least.

That’s all for now. Keep an eye for my LE reviews to start up again as soon as the figures hit the tournament scene. Thanks for reading!

I love numerical statistics. Great job but a couple of question off the cuff (I haven't actually gone back and looked) -

75 – There are 62 figures available in boosters (including the Chases), one Brick figure, seven Starter figures which are a part of the SI set, and five LE figures bringing the total number of figures in this set to 75.

Since they are 5 skrull variants with completely different dials, wouldn't this be 80?

3 – Remember those 20 figures with an 18 defense? Well only three figures in SI have some Probability Control to help address that situation. Dr. Doom gets his later in his dial, but only Captain Mar-vell and Sentry have it at the top of their dials. Impossible Man can use the power, but only this finite group actually posses PC. Get used to saying (and hearing), “Ugg. I missed!”

Doesn't Immortus start with Probability Control and Outwit?

Judging by the previews we’ve seen of Arkham Asylum’s art, it seems safe to assume that the days of four different art options are over.

I thought it was partially to obfuscate the chase, personally. I mean, just look what happened with Crisis. Of course, it COULD just be a cost-cutting measure. Sometimes a two art box is a two art box, y'know...;)

He's got a fun Special Power just as Impossible Man does. I was just looking at folks with that little patch of blue on their dials.

I love it! You forgot one "spider girl" - Tarantula.

Had they thrown Black Widow in there, we'd have an arachnid free for all!

Re: SHarpshooter. Someone should have gotten this ability. Even if it was as a Special power at the end of Punisher's dial (Lord knows you can't really aim with a chain gun).

Not to be nitpicky, but there are 80 figures when you include the 5 Skrull variants because that makes it 67 available in boosters.

Also there are 2 flyers that look like they are flying, FF Human Torch and Gravity (though he is hard to see since his cloud covers much of his dial.)

Interesting sub-themes in this set:

5 - there are five bug-like figures in this set (minus the Skrull doppleganger): Spider-Man, Spider-Girl, Arachne, Tarantula, and Yellowjacket. Annihilus is kind of a bug too, isn't he?

3 - there are three characters with alcohol issues: Ms. Marvel, Iron Man, and Hercules. Together they form the AAvengers.

I'll give you the 80 with the variants, but Gravity looks like he's flying? Nah. By that logic so is is Speedball and Captain America. And Howard the Duck could be prepping for take-off also:laugh:. My Gravity, and every one I've seen is perched on a grey lumpy thing that looks like a rock to me.

With the new changes to perplex and dv's getting insanely high now, we are almost to the point of needing to roll 3d6.

MechWarrior had an average AV of 9-10; attacking the lowest DV's of 19-20 in that game and you rolled 3d6.

And it was still hard to hit that 19 without any "improved targeting" which is that games version of prob control.
Some of the figs had 23 dv's.
That was almost impossible to hit with a 10-11av rolling 3d6.

5000 – 1 – The number of figures that can be made completely hilarious with just twenty seconds and a pocket knife.

Thanks for that.
I think this will be my first attempt at a mod.
:p

Nice review.

Scientists still lead the pack with 10 additions in this set and 192 overall (compared to 6 and 177 Martial Artists)...

The 10 scientists: Dr. Octopus, Goliath, Grey Gargoyle, Iron Man, Mole Man, Morbius, Psycho-Man, Spider-Man, Tarantula, and Yellowjacket.

Isn't Jessica Drew a blond who have dyed her hair? (but then again the skrull emperess might not have wanted to go through with all that trouble :) )

Great Article, however I have to say the only reason the rulebook is shorter on pages, is that the print is much smaller and the actual pages are larger. It is probably the same size as the old rulebook, just presented differently.
