View Full Version : Tips on Waking Up?
Ok, so I have terrible sleep patterns. This is a problem with school, obviously. So I need tips on things that help keep people awake. But nothing like "Just go to sleep early!" or "Drink coffee!" I need something that isn't obvious, because all my classes are in the morning, and my frees are in the afternoon, so I have to be awake in the morning.
Help?

Wake up 2 hours before your first class.
Do yoga and jog.
You will be ridiculously energized.

Have you tried burning your Xbox? This will allow you to go to bed at an earlier time, and feel more rested in the morning.

Both apples and peppermint act help to make you sharper and more focused. Taking showers helps too.

A candy bar usually does the trick. That or biting my pencil.

I generally wake about two hours before I need to be somewhere. I make a cup of coffee (you can replace coffee with tea). I make a breakfast (depending on how hungry I am or how much time I have) and then shower, shave, etc...
I may read a comic, book, or newspaper before leaving too.

Wake up an hour and a half early. Take a shower. Read a bit, or watch TV, get some activity of SOME kind in where your brain is working. Working out a bit first thing when you wake up can help too (obviously shower afterwards then).
That helps me.

alarm clock? i mean, i have no issues getting up, I'd set the alarm at 7:59 and i'd probably turn it off until its 8:30.

The way my old buddy T-Bird stayed awake in class was by having horrible, horrible friends who would prod him, draw on his notes, and otherwise do terrible, terrible things to him if he nodded off.
Kinda makes me wonder why he still hangs out with me, actually...
1. Don't nap.
2. Excercise.
3. Get 8 hrs sleep.

Adderall....
But seriously, get to bed early. Get in a good 8-9 hours of sleep. Try not to watch TV in bed, or right before bed (read instead). Don't eat to close to bed time.
Wake up at least an hour before class. Shower, eat breakfast, pack a red bull.

Just go to sleep early, or drink coffee or something.

Don't snooze, it makes you a lot more tired.
Drink a cold glass of water before anything else. (This Hydrates you)
Shower, it will wake you up.
Exercise. It burns up all your old energy and replaces it with new energy. Kinda the same way giving blood works.
Listen to DragonForce.
Plus find out how many hours of sleep you need. I need 7. 6 isn't enough and 8 makes more more tired. Sleeping too long is just as bad as not sleeping enough.

I'll second that. Snoozing is my leading cause of showing up late to class.

First, take a glass of water and fill it up. Add a couple of tabs of Non-Drowsey Cold Medicine Alka-seltzer. While you're waiting for the fizz, swallow a couple of No-Doz, an Echinecia (SP?) and a Ginseng. Drink the fizzy-water.
That or Crystal Meth.
That or schedule your classes later in the day...
All good ideas, but the main problem is I have 5 alarms go off, but I snooze them or just turn them off. I need self discipline more then anything else.
The jog idea is great, but getting up before I actually have to get up is near impossible, even if I get to bed by 10. Maybe I'll just work on forcing myself out of bed, that's what I really need to do.
And Stark, can't do that till next year, still a Senior in high school.

I once had 3 alarm clocks hidden around my room so that I needed to stand up, out of bed to turn them off. I used to abuse the snooze, but no longer.
There is a special place in hell for people that abuse the snooze alarm....
Well those that do it at the expense of others at least. Assuming you go to college next year, count on having a Roommate that will physically beat you if he has later classes than you and has to put up with an alarm going off every 9-11 minutes.
But your right: Getting up is different than waking up. Nothing will make you get up but you and self discipline (or perhaps a tazer wired to your bed and alarm clock). Getting coherent after your out of bed is the place for cold showers, breakfast, ect.
At least take solace in the fact that it's fairly common for this to be a teenage years only problem. With luck you'll have more normal sleep habits within a few years.

Have kids. You'll never sleep in again... at least not until they're teenagers. My 3 yr old came in at 4:45 this morning, ready to go and face the day. :tired:
OK, maybe it's not a real good solution but it works!

My dad NEVER slept in. Much to my mother's annoyance.
I once had 3 alarm clocks hidden around my room so that I needed to stand up, out of bed to turn them off. I used to abuse the snooze, but no longer.
I have one across the room, I still get up, turn the snooze on, sleep for seven minutes, turn it off again.
I even have one go off at 5:30 to get me somewhat awake, then one go off at six, then one go off at 6:20, then 30, then 45. I don't get up till 7.
It's terrible.

Quoted for truth.
I've had to put my alarm clock all the way on the other side of the room in order to keep myself from using the snooze button. By the time I get over to the alarm clock to turn it off, I'm awake enough to know if I try to get back in bed, I'm just going to lie there so I might as well get on with the day.
Also, don't take a LONG, HOT shower. If you take a long shower, it increases your blood preasure and will likely increase your fatige.
Cold showers are a great way to invigorate yourself in the morning. Try taking a short, hot shower (to wash your hair and body) and then turn it to the coldest you can get. It will really improve your morning energy reserve.
I also take a a B vitamin suppliment in the morning. It helps the body's metabolism which will keep you going in the morning.

Get somebody who'll kick you in the groin if you don't get up at the proper time.
Being the popular person that you are I'm sure you'll find a volunteer for the job easily.
I was coming in late to work for a while, the past month or two. I'm having some rather serious sleep and anxiety issues, and so I asked a few people at the office for some suggestions, because I was not only sleeping in, I was sleeping in through my alarm clock.
So, I got the suggestion: Put an alarm on your cell phone.
It sounded stupid, because why would your cell phone be any different from your alarm clock?
Because they're loud as hell, and really friggin' annoying. And, to boot: You can easily put them someplace where you can't find them. By the time you get your hands on the damn thing, you're ready to kill something, not sleep.
Since I've done this, I not only show up at work on time, but I'm actually getting up early enough to eat breakfast (something I haven't done since I was 10).
Outside of all that, there's really nothing you can do about this, other than exhibiting some basic self control. You don't want to develop a sleep disorder. They're far more irritating and life draining for you than you could possibly imagine. Go to bed.

I wake up at 6 and get home at 7, so quit your whining Biz.
:p
Anyways, I only get 3 or 4 hours of sleep, so I have a ton of stuff I do to wake myself up. Primarily, I wake up 30+ minutes early, and lay in bed awake. Its restful, but it gets my body ready to get up and do stuff. Also, I take a shower, and drink something really cold. Wakes me up every morning.

another thing to do is get some sunlight - help get your body used to night/day cycles, get it used to being up during the day and in bed at night, etc.

1st: DON'T USE THE SNOOZE BUTTON EVER. If you hit it because you think you need 5-10 more minutes of sleep, set your alarm back 10 minutes. Always get up with the alarm.
2nd: Some folks get up with the sun. (I'm one of these). It is great for Summer, not so good for winter. Go to sleep with the blinds open.
3rd: Get a dog. The dog will get up when it hears the neighbors getting up.
4th: Fall asleep to a long audiobook on your ipod, and have it run out when you want to wake up.
5th: Set your radio alarm to a few 10ths of a MegaHertz off of an FM station, so it is very noisy. You will be annoyed enough to get up.

I did what I did last year, for some reason I forgot to do it this year. I have this random religious station that I found, and for some reason, it wakes me up fine because I can listen to it for five minutes without getting annoyed, but it's too loud to fall asleep. I woke up 40 minutes earlier then usual today, so we'll see.
