View Full Version : Help Decide Which Rock Wars Comes Next!

Hey all.

With Rock Wars 11 coming to a close, I thought Id throw out some ideas for some possible future ones, namely RW12 at this point, and see if we can all get a hand in picking which one wed like to do next.

So basically just look at the list below, pick your favorite, which will help determine what Rock Wars 12 will be. (I ask that you choose here ONLY if you intend to vote in the actual, upcoming TOC)

Possible Choices:

Movie Themes - Superman vs. James Bond. Star Wars vs. The Pink Panther. Rocky vs. Jaws. Some of the most iconic move themes around (as well as our personal favorites) go head to head here.

80's Songs - From campy one hit wonders to honest-to-goodness great songs, to everything in between, the 80s is one of the most popular decade for music Ever!

Duets - Many times in music history solo artists (or even bands) have joined together to make some pretty damn good songs, which one is our favorite, well thats up to us here. - This Option Has Won Out, And This Is Now A Nomination Thread For The DUETS ROCK WARS!

Guilty Pleasures - These are songs which we each personally like (or even love) but were a bit (or very much so) embarassed to say. Share your personal guilty pleasure songs, If You Dare.

No More Already - kinda speaks for itself really. :) (though I must say if this does win I do have a special Final Rock Wars Id like to do to send us out)

So what say you all?

I'm intrigued by the Duets as well. The movie themes might be a bit too reminiscent of the TV themes, and the '80s songs would have a lot of overlap with the One-Hit-Wonders TOC. Guilty pleasures might be interesting, but it's pretty hard to judge that sort of thing (one person's guilty pleasure is another person's just plain pleasure). Actually, yeah, I just talked myself into that (having come up with five potential nominees in the space of ten seconds) - I'll throw down a vote for guilty pleasures.

I vote Duets as well, so I can nominate a bunch of songs that you'll all shoot down by the third round. ( But I will secretly know I made you listen to, Nyah ah ah!)

If you do the Eighties, then I demand equal time for the Seventies and The Nineties and the Sixties and the Oughtties and maybe even the Fifties (just to see if anybody dared to nominate Pat Boone).

Such a hater....my friend is the same way about the 80s. I, on the other hand, LOVE the 80s.

I would love a 90s music one just so I can nominate my faves like the Cranberries, Offspring, NiN, Smashing Pumpkins, Spice Girls, Pearl Jam, Nirvana...etc etc.

But I digress....Duets is what I would like. Time of Your Life here we come!

80's duets.

This can include many songs from soundtracks as well.
Peter Cetera, Linda Ronstadt, and Peabo Bryson, they will probably take up half the list.

For Canadian music you can add Alannah Miles, Shania Twain, Corey Hart, Kittie, Gordon Lightfoot, and more!

And that's just to name a few. I could go on.

Duets, I guess, but I would like a little clarification in advance of what a duet really is. Wouldn't both artists have to sing to make a duet? And what about acts that were duets to begin with? Mouth and McNeal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RPwDqFf4NJI), for example. They were a single act, but a duet at the same time. I am sure I could think of more given time.

As for the rest, I love the 80's, and it's been all downhill from there with a few bright spots trying to hold back the crushing wave of darkness.

But hey, Canadian sounds good to me, too. Triumph.

Duets, followed by Guilty Pleasure.

As to Neil Young, imagine being stuck in a car for 4.5 hours with Love is a Rose on continuous play.

Took me many years to get over it. Like a lot of my music I prefer the early stuff like Buffalo Springfield, rather than his later music.

OK, well it looks like without an official count being made, The Duets Rock Wars seems to be the favorite here (though I must say Id like to get to the others mentioned in time as well - though might give the Canadian RW to someone else :)).

So why dont we use this thread to start with our Duet Nominations (Id like to save "Island In The Stream" for KiwiGirl, please). Well aim for a 64 song TOC, and we have Alot of additional songs we want to add in Im sure we could bump it to 128 later.

So at this stage Id like anyone who is interested in participating in this next Rock Wars to choose and post 3 Duets (with links please).

The definition of a Duet in this case is a song made by 2 seperate established artists, as such Hall & Oates would not be a duet for this as they are considered one group (aka one established artist), but "Walk This Way" (by Run DMC and Aerosmith - two established artists) would be fine.

So I think thats it. Have at it, and Ill check over the list later.

Oh, and for the record, I dont like Neil Young either (sounds like an old Kermit The Frog to me) :)

So it's NOT just me then!

Alright, three duets then.

Roger Waters/Van Morrison Comfortably Numb (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CirSD6p1uFs)(with a little help from The Band)

Eric Clapton and Sheryl Crow Little Wing (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6F2qExLsic)

And a slight cheat one that I'm half expecting to be shot down, but is honestly my favorite of the three I'm posting, so why the Hell not?

David Gilmour and Richard Wright, Wearing the Inside Out. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mDY2wA-GqU)

Hey Dtm, can you start a new nominations thread and just port all the noms over there. I'm not sure guys like Rokk and Hail know that we're nominating here.
I just noticed! So I'll nominate:

Bjork and PJ Harvey - Satisfaction (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2AX2bcWtg1Q)

PJ Harvey and Nick Cave - Henry Lee (http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=3696115)

And as tempted as I am to nominate the "Another Day duet they did for the 1979 Christmas special, I'll go with:

Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel - Don't Give Up (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiCRZLr9oRw)

DTM

Question about the Peter / Kate song there Hail, as wouldnt that fall into the category of that being a Peter Gabriel song, with Kate Bush singing a bit on the chorus (kinda like Sting singing on Money For Nothing, even though thats clearly not a duet). I mean, other than say liner notes, I dont think Kate is credited with that song really (as in say when it plays on the radio or on a video channel).

Even though I tried to nominate S&G, I have to agree with old DTM on this one. In music acts like Sonny and Cher, Peter and Gordon, Simon & Garfunkel are actually considered Duos. It may sound like semantics, but there are distinct differences.

If you have given me a link from a live act, and theres a recorded version made of it, Please go back and find me the link for that (or Ill just do so myself, but it will be great if you guys could help with your own picks). SHENANIGANS! Jeff Beck doesn't sing in that!

Ah, but check the definition:
The definition of a Duet in this case is a song made by 2 seperate established artists

It only says it has to be made by two separate artists, not that they both have to sing in it! I could as easily have chosen a Mozart Violen duet where no one sings at all! Mwahahah! Years of rules lawyering pay off!

Seriously though, I can come up with another if that one violates the spirit of things.

I'm going to have to think a bit to come up with three I like (though the list helps, thanks!)

Beer For My Horses (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fr0SLtFzNaE) (Toby Keith/Willie Nelson) - I may not exactly be a fan of country, but that's not to say I can't enjoy a song from it every now and then.

You've Got a Friend In Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2y0DdTRYOA) (Randy Newman/Lyle Lovett)

My last call I know is a bit iffy, so I'll throw it out and hope it sticks:
Still Alive (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5H3lcl_an8) (Jonathan Coulton/GLaDOS [Felicia Day])

Since I think it started as a joke with the two being Dueted together separately, I also have a version where they're singing together live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6phPO0YPvA) (which, hopefully, will make it an official enough duet to count), so if it's acceptable, feel free to use either.

Without going back to re-check, was it Rick Wright and David Gilmour?
I would say that Richard Wright wouldn't count as a solo act. Him grouping with David Gilmour is more like an iteration of Pink Floyd than a duet, anyway.

As for my nominations...

George Michael and Elton John, Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqw373vmKTw)
I only know of the live version here.

Eric Clapton and Elton John, Runaway Train (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxJu413Oz0E)

And to complete the trifecta, Neil Sedaka and Elton John, Bad Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuBEBffz-k4)
As far as this one goes, I am not making any comments about endorsing or opposing the viewpoints the person that posted this seems to endorse.
It was just far and away the best post of the song itself that I could find.
They also play the song multiple times while they run their "viewpoint commercial".

Im a bit lost with Still Alive (which is a song I actually like), is it Only a Duet when the Live version, and the original recorded version is Not a Duet?

I'm not sure, to be honest. If I understand things correctly, first Jonathan Coulton recorded his own version of the song after Portal came out, then someone edited them together without the two's involvement (but this is just what I've heard/come to understand, so I may be off in the first place). Then we've got the two actually appearing together to sing it as a genuine duet. The non-live version I posted was posted well after the live duet took place, though due to the way the internet works, It may have actually been created before, and even if it wasn't, I can't say for certain whether it was done in a genuine fashion, or just another 'duet' made by someone else taking their individual performances and creating a single file out of them.

So I know the Live version is a true duet, but on the recorded version I can't give you a guarantee one way or the other.
