First off, you should probably play a couple of games without worrying about which figures you're using, and just try to understand how the game works. It will help you understand why people like certain figures. You should also try all of the different powers you can, so that you can see what effect they have on the game.
In general figures with Probability Control, Outwit, Support, Perplex, Leadership and Flight do well in supporting roles.
What figures you will consider the best will vary depending on how you play, but there are certain things that you should look for in figures:
Damage Sources:
1. At least 3 damage including powers, or Blades/Claws/Fangs. 3 Damage is important because it gets through damage reduction powers.
2. An attack of at least 9.
3. Low cost - Since this is the part of your force that will be winning battles for you, you can afford to spend points, but be aware that it is often better to have a character with weaker combat characteristics and a taxi, than to have one that has good stats.
Some standouts in this category:
Firelord (He's considered cheap by many people)
Bane
Bullseye
Hercules
Wolverine
Sabretooth
Dove
Spiral
...
etc.
Support Characters:
1. Support Ability - Leadership, Probability , Barrier, Control, Outwit, Support, Perplex, or Flight are all quite good.
2. Low cost - You don't want to be paying a whole lot of points for a figure with a secondary role.
3. Extras - Support characters can and will win battles for you by going into combat, so fighting abilities are good.
Standouts in this category:
Batman
Nightwing
Wasp
Vulture
Medics
Harley Quinn
Black Panther
Aquaman
Hawkman
Booster Gold
Black Cat
Scarlet Witch
Mandroid Armor (TK)
SHIELD pieces.
Avelanche
Pyro
Tactical combat pieces.
These a pieces that have special abilities that allow them to do things that don't really fit in the category of support or the category of typical damage sources:
Blue Beetle for Force Blast
Flash and Nightcrawler for Hypersonic Speed.
Prof X, EV White Queen, or Moondragon for Mind Control
Quicksilver,Whirlwind,Toad and others ("Medic Beaters" used to block line of sight, tie figures up in melee, attack support figures and finish off injured figures.)
