View Full Version : ROCK WARS 12 (DUETS): Round 1, Match 2
Okay boys and girls, here we have 64 Classic Duets, from some of our Favorite Musical Acts, which will be pitted against one another, Match by Match, Round by Round, weeding them all out until they get to the FINAL MATCH, which will have our two favorite Duets face against one another to see which one emerges as Grand Champion of our latest Rock Wars!
As always, this TOC should be voted using a very simple criteria, which song do YOU like more, which do YOU feel you would rather listen to, and which would YOU say is ultimately more deserving to move on. Easy. :)
Pretty basic really. Songs are matched up, you all vote on the one you like more, the winner goes to the Next Round, and we do this over and over again until the Rounds are Over. I do ask that you all give objective opinions and votes here, listening to All songs and arguments here within this TOC with an open mind, beginning to end, and base your honest votes from that.
So without further adieu, why dont we get started with the Next of Many matches to come, in HCRs latest Rock Wars, Favorite Duet!
I now give you:
FOGGY MOUNTAIN BREAKDOWN

vs.
WHAT HAVE I DONE TO DESERVE THIS

Earl Scruggs and Steve Martin get my vote (and I can honestly say I didn't see that coming).

If someone told Earl Scruggs he'd been placed in a contest that pitted him against the Pet Shop Boys his face would probably turn upside down.
My vote's for Foggy Mountain Breakdown.
Neither one of them impressed me at all. Foggy Mountain Breakdown was less annoying though, so it gets my vote.

My hate for the Pet Shop Boys cancels out my love for Dusty Springfield, so I give my vote to the way too busy instrumental piece.

Too busy? Man I love the energy that was poured into that.

Shortly before we moved from Virginia, my parents found a winery somewhere in the general area of Culpeper County. While I neither particularly enjoy wine or spending time with my parents, every now and then, the winery did have these festivals where they served barbecue and had local musicians reminiscent of this style. Quite enjoyable.

Thirded.
Also, I'm voting for it.
FOGGY MOUNTAIN BREAKDOWN
Bah, this isnt even close for me, but the other way from what everyone else here feels so far. Easily a vote for PSB and Dusty to advance, as I didnt enjoy Emmitt Otters Jugband Whoo-Hooww at all, and would never willingly listen to it again, whereas the other is a cool, fun sounding 80s tune.

This doesn't exactly come as a surprise to me, as I've known for a long time that you're a grinch when it comes to country and it's ilk. ;)

After hearing FMB, I was looking for a reason to vote against it as I didn't really like it at all. It's just unfortunate that that other song was even worse.

Foggy Mountain Breakdown for me. Fun tune. Those were some mad pickin' skillz going on there. Yeehaw!
Bah, youre all 80s haters, I tell ya! To me this isnt even close (and Im hardly a Pet Shop Boys fan), unfortunately Im on the polar opposite of everyone else. :p

I'm not an 80s hater, but the 80s are tied with the 50s as least exciting for me musically of all the decades I have existed in.
By the way, very interested in how Country's Duchess of Kiwi will be voting here.
Oh shell be on soon enough, Im sure. :)
And if it means anything, possibly one of my all time favorite duets is done by 2 country artists (Kenny and Dolly), so Im not all country hater, just the songs that SCREAMS COUNTRY MUSIC that I have no taste for.

Sorry Eddy I kinda enjoyed FMB - I would have liked this song better if it had words, as I kept waiting for the words to come and they never did.... :)
Ive always enjoyed this Pet Shop Boys song though and it gets my vote!

With Marty Stuart also playing in Foggy Mountain Breakdown, I do not know how you can reach in and pull out Earl Scruggs and Steve Martin and say duet. Marty Stuart is a highly honored contry music veteran.
I am not even going to go looking around to see about the other guys. I know that Paul Shaffer has done studio work, but maybe not so much on his own.
Still, saying this is a duet is at best, to me, like nominating the three tenors and saying it is a Pavarotti and Domingo duet, while relegating Carreras to non-entity status.
So Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield get a pass and my vote.

I love 80s music. I grew up listening to all that, but in this case What Have I Done To Deserve This just didn't grab me, while Foggy Mountain Breakdown absolutely did.

I just think that the terms are there. I can no more vote for this than I could vote for USA for Africa, Band Aid, or Hear n' Aid as a duet, and unless it comes up against something like itself, I will continue to vote for the competition, regardless of personal feelings.

I am going for What have I done to deserve this, due to the fact that the other song is not really a duet

Rep for orchestrating my exact feelings on this one. I've worked with probably half the guys on that stage, and in each case, said guy was headlining a sold out show. So I just can't see it as a "Duet" between Steve Martin and Earl Scruggs. More accurately, it's Steve and Earl and Marty Stuart and Jerry Douglas and Vince Gill and Glen Duncan and two of Earl's brothers in some kind of "Insane Bluegrass All-Star Band" versus the Pet Shop Boys and Dusty Springfield. "What Have I Done to Deserve This" to advance.

And how many all star band songs are there for us to actually fit a TOC? :p

They were two of Earl's sons actually and Albert Lee was there.

The guys on Sound Opinions just did a whole show devoted to them (http://www.podtrac.com/pts/redirect.mp3/audio.soundopinions.org/podcasts/sooppodshow194.mp3) (and they left out quite a few of the ones that I was thinking they'd include).

He's a Bluegrass pioneer. The style isn't as old as it sounds.
The reason Steve Martin gets the nod over the others is because it's meant to be a revelation that the man is talented enough to keep up with all those giants. Earl gets the other nod because he's the grand old man of Bluegrass. He goes all the way back to Bill Monroe.
Seriously, none of these selections are duets if you give consideration to all the talented unknowns that are backing these superstars up. Just consider Marty Stuart and the rest as very pricy back up.
What Have I Done To Deserve This
This one time slaughter match just got alot closer.
