View Full Version : Spider-Man based expansion set...

No, no, I haven't heard any concrete evidence whatsoever to indicate that WizKids is even considering a Spidey expansion set. But there was an interesting thread that I enjoyed reading for a while, debating whether the next Marvel expansion would be (perhaps) Spider-Man or Avengers based. I thought it might be time to start a new thread, and talk about the clix we'd like to see in a new Spider-Man based expansion set...

Please indicate which clix you'd like to see (with suggestions how to do them right, if you feel so inclined), and also, which Spidey-based clix you do NOT want to see. We'll see who's popular, and who is not.

Obviously, first we'd need at least one new version of Spider-Man. With the classic look already out, as well as Black Costume Spidey, Six-Armed Spidey, and soon the new Web-Shield Spidey, I'm at a loss right now to think of who they might use. The only that comes to mind would be a unique fig... Bag-over-his-Head, Barefoot, wearing-one-of-Johnny-Storm's-old-FF-costume Spider-Man! He'd have Leap/Climb, good defenses (maybe Super Senses too), and a good sense of humor. Also, no web-shooters. His arch-enemy could be the Human Torch ("I'll get you for this, Torch.").

We could also see some of the Spidey allies that seem to pop up so often... We already have Daredevil and the Black Cat, so new candidates could include:
Scarlet Spider: Pretty close to where Six-Armed Spider-Man is, powerwise, perhaps with greater range or versatility with his webs.
Firestar: Angelica Jones, with her microwave heat powers, could have rookie X-Men team, expert Spider-Man Team, and veteran Avengers team. She flies, has Ranged Combat Expert, and Energy Reflection.
Silver Sable: Leadership, good attack rating, Stealth, and maybe Perplex might be a good way of dealing with this resourceful mercenary.
Nova: a fast flier, with good damage (either 3 or 2 all the way down his dial), Toughness, and definitely some levels of Charge.
Morbius: someone for Blade to pick on besides the Vampire lackies... Blades/Claws/Fangs, flight (although not tremendously fast), and later Steal Energy powers.

Okay, now let's talk villains... no one's fought more costumed baddies than the Webhead, so there are many to choose from. We've already got some notables, such as Hobgoblin, Doc Ock, and Vulture, but there are still quite a few missing.
Venom: this bruiser's tremendous Super Strength and Toughness make him one of Spidey's deadliest foes, and his alien symbiote's Plasticity and Incapacitate abilities make it difficult for even the webslinger to get away. Besides, we could pit Venom against his archenemy,
Carnage: Just like Venom, only meaner and nastier. Still has Super Strength and Toughness, but add Blades/Claws/Fangs to the mix, and you've got one twisted psychopath on the loose.
the Scorpion: With his Super Strength, and his cybernetic tail, this guy can really dish it out. Toughness keeps him from dropping too quickly, and his tail armaments let him attack at a short distance, while he Leap/Climbs wherever the battle needs him.
Kraven the Hunter: this guy's a planner, so either Perplex or Outwit for this master of the hunt. Stealth lets him study his prey without being targeted, and Leap/Climb helps him keep from being pinned down. He'd also be a fair hand-to-hand combatant.
Electro: this guy delivers a massive charge to whoever touches him (don't know how to reflect that in clix, though), and he's worked with the Frightful Four as well, so one version can be a Minion of Doom. He's a Ranged Combat Expert, but probably doesn't have brilliant defenses.
Rhino: the villains need more bricks. Invulnerable, and Super Strong, with a mighty Charge to give this near-sighted villain that extra kick.
Carrion: he doesn't talk much, but whatever he touches, dies. This guy is a definite candidate for the Poison power, and since he's intangible, his Phasing power lets him go where he will.
Speed Demon: Marvel needs someone besides Nightcrawler who has Hypersonic speed. This guy is an excellent candidate, and can either have Super Senses or Energy Deflection to reflect his phenomenal reflexes.
Cobra: once a partner of Mr. Hyde, this guy's as sneaky as they come. He's even more agile than Spidey, so he'd be hard to hit (17 or better defense, I think). He Climbs walls, shoots poison pellets at range (not Poison power I think, as that would affect all adjacent foes instead of a single target), and can slip through the tiniest holes (sounds like a variant of Phasing) to escape capture.
the Beetle: another flier (you can never have too many), with armor (Toughness), and a decent ranged attack -- his Electro-bites!... his old costume could climb walls too, but I think being a flier makes that pretty unnecessary.

There's dozens more, but I want to leave some for others to comment on... let's hear who you want to see.
Oh, and at least one that I do NOT want to see...
Rocket Racer: definitely a throwback to the seventies... a jet-powered skateboarder, yeesh! And we probably don't need the Amazing Spider-Kid, with the robotic spider-legs, or the Fabulous Frog-Man!! But if they make those last two, at least Toad would have someone to pal around with....

I think the Ben Reilly Costume would be the best way to go.

That's what I like to hear! Hopefully, they make Scarlet, along with a new REV Spider-man and have both of the figures under 200 points total, to leave room for other figures. I think the most important part of Scarlet Spider is the impact webbing. Hopefully the can find a way to represent this.

These two would be awesome. Personally I'd like to see an REV version of both, but realistically, Carnage only deserves a Unique. He would have BCF and battle fury all the way down, with some leap/climb and toughness. Venom would probably be the way you describe him.

what about Puma: bcf leap and climb he would need the "hulk up" first click. exp or vet spider team. would be a great BCF L/C spidey team peice. Hopefully under 40pts, and would make a great sculpt.

Mysterio: one of the best spidey villans....perplex, outwit, would love to see how they represent his illusion power....mindcontrol anyone??

Prowler...kinda a poor mans marvel batman (no outwit). L/C, smoke cloud, maybe bcf, stealth, started out a spidey friend then went bad.

Chamelon: SHAPECHANGE SHAPECHANGE SHAPECHANGE and outwit

want a villian brick? Tombstone: Superstrength, charge, inv.

I would love to see:

Cloak and dagger.....

Cloak: Phasing, and ???? I am at a loss on how they would represent his powers

Dagger: RCE low range, and ???? I think that would be it, they would make a good addition to the spidey team though. an RCE and a Phaser

and last but not least,

Aunt May.....four words for ya.............."old bag never dies"

that sums up my wants list

supergoblin

I'd love to see venom and carnage.

One spidy vilain I'd hate to see is the Spot.

Have to go with the old Spidey baddies:

Kraven the Hunter
Vulture (the old guy) with better stats than the young 'un
Rhino - can take on the Hulk too
Electro
Mysterio
Shocker-- although repaint of Blizzard might do that
Lizard
and of course:
J. Jonah Jameson's Spider-Killer bots!

To round out the Frightful Four,
Wingless Wizard and
Trapster is needed, though
Paste-Pot Pete remains a better name.

As an aside:
Where the heck is Zemo anyway?

Spiderman variants I'd like to see:

Cosmic Spiderman (from the Captain Universe period)
Man-Spider: imagine spiderman with B/C/F!
Spiderman 2099
FF Spiderman. I don't care if it's the Amazing Bag Man, Spiderman from the "New FF", or alternate reality Spiderman where he actually did join them. All three would be welcome.

Supporting cast:
Hydroman
Cloak and Dagger
Kraven
Lizard
Rhino
Aunt May: No starting line or KOs, the dial just keeps going around (to represent the fact that she's never going to die) with Movement 2, Attack 4, Defense 8, Damage 1 (hey she can swing a mean broom!!). Only costs 2 points.

I'd like to see Venom, but I can live without Carnage.

BrimstoneBiker

- DEFINITELY Captain Universe Spidey - Maybe as a unique...

- Alastair Smythe and the Spider Slayers?

- How about 'Battle Damaged Spidey' with a torn up costume. It's usually at this point where he digs down deep and hands out a whupping to someone (Hey, he beat Firelord into unconsciousness once) so you could pump up his defense and hand to hand damage, maybe add some Flurry, Outwit and Charge - maybe even a click of Hypersonic Attack.

- I'm still waiting for the Spidey/Mr Fixit/Ghost Rider/Logan version of the Fantastic Four, with the FF team ability for all of them!

- Green Goblin, baby!

- Also, since non-superpowered characters play such a large part of Spidey's stories, maybe some 'mook' characters in the form of Jolly Jonah, MJ, Flash Thompson, and stuff - Maybe they don't cost too many points, but they're worth major points to the opponent's team if they're taken out and/or for if they're still alive at the end of the game.

- Spidey Team Member versions of the Thing and other characters that Spidey's teamed up with a lot.

Why doesn't anyone feel the next expansion will be the Defenders. There are only 2 Defenders so there are bound to be more coming up, and maybe Wizkids will do a double base thing, like Surfer on his surfboard and Ghost Rider on his cycle.

bjmc1975
02/10/2003, 14:53
Mainly because the Defenders aren't popular enough to sell an expansion to casual fans - there are only two big names on their team that haven't been made yet (Silver Surfer and Namor) and neither of those even has a title right now (though Namor is getting one soon).

While hardcore Marvel fans would like a Defenders set, and others would like some of the figs (I for one would really like Nighthawk), the Defenders are simply not well known enough to headline a set.

As for another vertion of spidy, there was a short period of time in which hw got cosmic powers. He could fly, was invunerable and was stronger then he normaly was. He ending up losing them ( althogh i don't remember how) but i think this would make a good click.

How about Doppleganer(spelling?). Since they aready did the 6 armed spidy im thinking he migght be game. How about the Man-Spider.

maveric28
02/10/2003, 17:31
Yes, I remember the Doppleganger... he was Spidey's antihero, created during the Infinity Gem saga thingie... unlike all the rest of the Marvel heroes dopplegangers, the Spider-Doppleganger carried on. Later, he was adopted by Carnage during the Maximum Carnage storyline. Doppleganger might be fun to have as a click... certainly makes more sense than Peter's six-armed version.

For that matter, let's add Shriek to the mix! Her psychotic mentality is a good argument for Perplex, and her sonic powers give her a deadly ranged attack as well.

I also wouldn't mind seeing DemoGoblin from that storyline... he's a souped up version of Hobgoblin, with magical powers to augment his technology. Finally, a Hobgoblin who can hold his own against Spidey in the clix world!

How's about the Punisher?

Ras'Al'An
02/13/2003, 10:04
Definitely HAVE to be in a Spidey expansion set:

Punisher (AND Microchip Unique... lol)
Kraven
Morbius
Lizard
Venom
Carnage
GREEN Goblin

Aunt May Unique (Naaah! I'm kidding!)

maveric28
02/13/2003, 15:24
Oh man, how could I have forgotten the Punisher? He'd have Ranged Combat Expert, of course, and after a couple clicks, he'd get a click or two of Energy Explosion -- gotta love those hand grenades!! He's such a canny planner, he's an excellent candidate for Outwit and/or Perplex. And when he's taken four or five hits, and he's on his last legs, give him one or two clicks of Blades/Claws/Fangs, as he drops the gun and switches to that heavy knife he carries! That'll keep your opponent from thinking that Frank Castle is any kind of any easy mark.

Other Spidey rogues' gallery members, or just plain "Street-level Heroes", which would complement a Spider-Man set could include the following:

Backlash: Yes, ponytail and all, this guy is a master of the whip, and would make a good addition to the Sinister Syndicate (usually works for Justin Hammer, right?), as he's worked with Blizzard and Boomerang several times. He should have a few clicks of Toughness (protective suit), a short ranged attack (no more than 4 range) with either 2 or 3 clicks of damage, an option for Incapacitate, and an Explosion on his last or second to last click, since he can detonate his whips when things look desperate.

Killer Shrike: a deadly flier with Charge and Blades/Claws/Fangs, he also wears bracers that allow for a short-range energy attack.

Jack O'Lantern: Perhaps not much different from Hobgoblin, but the guy with the hat-on-fire would be an interesting sculpt, to say the least. His costume gives him body armor (Toughness), his flying platform allows him to... well... fly, and his collector's edition of designer grenades give him several different attack forms, making him a versatile opponent... some ideas for powers based on these include Smoke Cloud, Energy Explosion, and Poison.

Stilt-Man!! No, I'm not joking... this guy would be a fun sculpt. His armor gives him good protection (Toughness, perhaps even a click or two of Invulnerability for his more experienced versions), his extendable legs give him mighty stride (fast movement) and deliver a powerful kick (2 or 3 clicks of damage), and his armor has a small array of weaponry to boot! Powers could also include a ranged attack, Explosion, Incapacitate, and even Force Blast!

Sidewinder: this one-time leader of the Serpent Society teleports, which can be represented with either Phasing or Hypersonic speed, his armor protects him, and he's a cunning Leader as well.

Power Man and Iron Fist: maybe listed as Spider-Man allies on at least one version, these Heroes for Hire are skilled hand-to-hand combatants. Power Man is Tough, has Super Strength, and maybe a few clicks of Charge. Iron Fist has an even better attack value, has Stealth and then Leap/Climb, and can manifest the ch'i energy that flows through us all to deliver a devastating blow... this could be a good excuse for a click or so of Blades/Claws/Fangs, or just one or two clicks of 4 to 5 damage.

... there are just way too many possibilities, and we're just scratching the surface here. Other lesser known characters could still include others I haven't mentioned yet, like the Chameleon, the Spider-Slayer robots, the other core members of the Serpent Society, Modok (a good flier to add to your team of Hydra agents), the Porcupine, the Lizard, Man-Wolf, and Wrecker and the Wrecking Crew. Plus many others which I just can't think of right now... how would you write these characters up?

02/14/2003, 20:06
Funny someone should mention Cloak and how they were wondering how to do his powers...

I just made a mod of The Shade (DC villain) who has "darkness" powers similar to Cloak (who I plan on making soon).

Here's what I came up with.

Perplex (his darkness would throw people off)
Super Senses (not that he would have it per se, but it would act like you didn't actually hit him, but his "darkness")
Defense (his cloaking "darkness" can enlarge to absorb and protect others)
Steal Energy (for Cloak, not The Shade - Cloak's darkness drained people if they were in it too long - maybe he would just get this near the end)
Stealth/Climb (he is practically made of "shadows")

Just some ideas

I think we are all forgetting an obvious spider click.... Spider-Girl
I mean, if she is popular enough to carry her own book, why not have one as a clik, maybe a unique. And also, this could open the door for some of the others from that future universe (like wolverine and Elektra's daughter, or some of the A next bunch)

maveric28
02/15/2003, 02:31
Well, I don't know about Spider Girl, but I would like to see Spider-Woman!! Jessica Drew, the classic, not the one that appeared during the Secret Wars. She flies, shoots venom blasts, is immune to poisons (don't think that can be reflected in clix), climbs walls, and is remarkably fast and strong. Surely, in a game that touts such rarely seens as the Controller and Blizzard, there is a place for Jessica Drew, the original Spider-Woman!

Electro / Mysterio / Kraven / Vulture ( the old guy , not the naff IC version . You always want the old guy ... ) -- to round out the Sinister Six ;

Scorpion

Rhino

Lizard

Green Goblin

Although if we get them all in one expansion , I'd be gobsmacked .

I'm with Egospark and Stanleylee - I really want classic '60s villains a priority in HeroClix.

Scorpion, Kraven, Mysterio, Rhino, Electro, Lizard... and even into the 1970s with Morbius, Tarantula and Punisher. I suppose Venom, Hydro-Man and Jack O'Lantern would be OK, but really I don't see all these other modern yahoos *cough Tombstone cough* making the cut. And I like Morlun as much as the next guy... but I'm jonesing for old Handbook of the Marvel Universe folks.

I think a cool expanson could be called Concrete Jungle or Big Apple or something, bringing us dozens of NYC-based heroes and villains. This way Spider-Man and Daredevil could all benefit from the likes of the aforementioned adversaries, plus Owl, Wizard, Trapster (Frightful Four dontchyaknow), Stilt-Man, Purple Man, Deathstalker, etc. On the hero side we could get Power Man, Iron Fist, Cloak & Dagger, Silver Sable, a couple New Warriors and what the hell Ghost Rider.

Since no expansion set is 100% dedictaed to its namesake (i.e. not many FF-related characters in Clobberin' Time), this could also have some folks from Dr. Strange (Baron Mordo, Dormammu, Umar, Clea, Dracula) and a few cosmic entities, like Silver Surfer, Adam Warlock, Gabriel the Air-Walker and Beta Ray Bill. And another couple X-Men or New Mutants just for laffs. And Mastermind, just to round out the last of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

The next Spidey should be on a flying base, in a web-slinging pose. That way he can taxi people on weblines and have Charge to do webline kicks. A significant change from the others. Keep the Incapacitate, Super Senses and Outwit stuff going though. I mean, c'mon this guy taxis people more than half the fliers released thus far.

Beetle = yes, as long as he gets to be MoE on his Vet, and we get an LE Abner Jenkins with Spidey Team (haha, what irony).

Gotta have Venom - and not as a unique figure either. Use Eddie Brock as the unique or LE...

I'd also like to see Rhino, Scorpion, Carnage, Shocker, Speed Demon, and Stilt Man.

I'd also like to see some of my favorite Masters of Evil - Moonstone, Beetle, Fixer, Screaming Mimi, Goliath, and Baron Helmut Zemo. (In case you haven't noticed, I'm a huge Thunderbolts fan and the Thunderbolts would be a GREAT expansion.)

why would you need an REV Venom? He's never joined a team. His powers haven't improved over the years. He should not have the Spider team ability just because they've worked together a few times. It was never for the better good. It was because they had a common interest in carnage or in Venom's wife's well being. Venom is insane and though he should be a clix. He should only be a unique. - T.

I'd be in favor of completely splitting up future expansions into themed teams. Then the sets could be smaller and come out more often. There could be a series from the Spiderman - and related comics, an X-Men series - and include the other X teams, Avengers, etc...and of course the foes would be included in the sets too.

Just a thought, if they make a spidey-villain expansion.......

1)Venom: could be everything Spiderman wasnt....

2)Kraven the Hunter: could be in it. His powers, I have no idea. Maybe stuff like outwit and CCE.....

3)Electro: would be excellent. With Energy Explosion, maybe RCE,
maybe Barrier (Like an electric field he could make..)

4)Mysterio: could have smoke cloud, stealth, perplex, all those mind bending stuff that would make him a crafty figure.

5) Rhino: Powerhouse. Toughness, Invun for couple clicks, charge, and maybe willpower too, since he seemingly always carries on.

6)Lizard: leap/climb. claws, 1 click toughness, and battle fury.

7) The ever lovin DOPPLEGANGER:
Range of 4, Perplex, climb, super strength maybe, super senses.

8) Prowler: Maybe good speed and leap, claws, stealth, outwit, maybe somethin else too....high attack rating, low defense.

9) Morbius: Most definitely Steal Energy, 3 damage for 1 click then all 2, super sense, probabilty control.

10) TINKERER!!!: Mind Control, range of 5(his gun), toughness, leadership later on.

11) SpiderSlayer!: Claws, and toughness. High atatck value.

12) Alastair Smythe: R and E versions have leadership, enchancement. V version is the Mutant Smythe with flurry.

All I gotta say is that if they were to make a Spider-man based set, I really wanna see some Octobots to help out Doc Oc. I mean, Dr Doom gets his Doombots, why not some Octobots for the other fine Doctor?

I would love to see Marrow and maybe some of the EXiles team, such as Blink, Nocturne and Morph.
the possibilities really are endless as long as wizkids dont piss off marvel and lose the licence.

Oooooo, sign me up. I love the Exiles. Great comic and great premise. Plus, how can you not love Nocturne, a hot female version of Nightcrawler :-) awwwwww yeah .... that's all I gotta say. Plus, you could include the Weapon X version of Spider-man, just called Spider. He looked pretty bad ### in that costume. Or make a whole series of clix based around Exiles. Would allow for many interesting new figs .....

What would Cosmic Spidey's dial look like? I mean, if you've ever read Cosmic Spidey comics, he kicked some serious butt...including punching Hulk into orbit.

As for the Prowler, I'd love to see him in the game. And for those of you who are a little confused with Prowler's origin..he started out bad and turned good later, much like Sandman.

Call me old fashioned. I grew up with Spidey in the 70's and early 80's, so if they do a Spider-Man themed expansion, the characters I'd want to see are the real classic villains. Lizard, Rhino, Electro, Mysterio, and the REAL Green Goblin. I may be in the minority here, but Venom and Carnage don't really do it for me. I'm sure we'll see them soon. They are popular enough characters, they'll almost have to be made. I can accept that, but the five I listed there would be my top choice.

And personally, while we're at it, I may be the only one, but I think the Enforcers would be fun. They were a group of criminals with no real superpowers. Fancy Dan was a martial artist, Montana was a master of the lariat, Ox was just a really strong normal guy, and Snake Marston was a contortionist. Don't know how well they'd translate, but they could be interesting low-cost villains, basically thugs with a bit higher skills or a click or two of power. Montana could have a bit of Incapacitate. Snake Marston a little Plasticity, etc.

Also, while they're really not Spider-Man villains, Basil Elks did mention Mentallo and The Fixer. They're a couple of my favorite B-Listers, so I'd love to see them. Fixer might be essentially a flying T.O. Morrow. Mentallo would be somewhere between Puppet Master and White Queen for stats and powers. More useful than the former, yet not as expensive as the latter. Probably in the 40-50 point range.

Yeah, they could do a Spidey set, but why? I mean he is only one hero, soooooo any Spidey set would really be a Spiderman Villain set. That doesn't really make much sense. Yes, I know the movies and all, his popularity hasn't been this high in a long time...still...I just don't see it.

My thoughts are that the next set is going to be a Villains set. I see it as villain heavy, and will focus on the major players in the game, and the comics. Avengers, X-Men, and yes Spiderman and Hulk to a lesser extent.

I don't think they will ever really do an Avengers based expansion, as it is just not a money maker, like the X-Men. I mean, how many titles do they have now...50? 100? How many Avengers titles...1.

However, I think a Rogue's Gallery expansion would be a big seller, as everyone loves villains. The hard part for Wizkids would be to try to pick the best villains that could be translated into Heroclix, and look good after sculpted and painted by little Chinese kids in sweat shops...which is a really hard thing to do.

So, I think it will be a villain expansion...only a wild guess, though.

Morbius is an absolute must in whatever set. How about web-armour spiderman? He has one click of invulnerability, then toughness. He would sacrifice leap/climb and speed, but would pack one heck of a wallop.
Will'o'the wisp- phasing obviously.
Anyone remember that black guy from Mcfarlane's run who had the proportionate strength and abilities of a jack rabbit?
Vermin-b/c/f/ stealth.
How about the spiderman unlimited costume?
More later as I think of them.

You know as far as a new Spidey fig - why not one on a flying base? Just think Spidey down in a classic McFarlane croutch, shooting webs as he is swinging. Iceman is on a flying base - Spidey should be too!

There are way too many villains for me to choose just a few - but Venom and Carnage really should be in whichever set is next.
