View Full Version : ROCK WARS 12 (DUETS): Round 1, Match 16

DTM
09/01/2009, 11:24
Okay boys and girls, here we have 64 Classic Duets, from some of our Favorite Musical Acts, which will be pitted against one another, Match by Match, Round by Round, weeding them all out until they get to the FINAL MATCH, which will have our two favorite Duets face against one another to see which one emerges as Grand Champion of our latest Rock Wars!

As always, this TOC should be voted using a very simple criteria, which song do YOU like more, which do YOU feel you would rather listen to, and which would YOU say is ultimately more deserving to move on. Easy. :)

Pretty basic really. Songs are matched up, you all vote on the one you like more, the winner goes to the Next Round, and we do this over and over again until the Rounds are Over. I do ask that you all give objective opinions and votes here, listening to All songs and arguments here within this TOC with an open mind, beginning to end, and base your honest votes from that.

So without further adieu, why dont we get started with the Next of Many matches to come, in HCRs latest Rock Wars, Favorite Duet!

I now give you:

LITTLE WING
(Eric Clapton / Sheryl Crow) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6F2qExLsic)

vs.

SHIPS IN THE NIGHT
(Jack Bruce / Maggie Reilly) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6OM4Ob-2_Q&feature=related)

So what say you all. Which of these songs will move onto the Next Round, and which will re-unite just so they can break up again?

I can't believe I am going against Hendrix but since it is not him playing the song I think that I can.

My vote is for Ships in the Night.

Jack Bruce is one of my favorite writers and bassists. Going with Ships in the Night

So far we're halway through the competition and none of my noms have turned up. It's probably just as well since I don't think any of them but one will make it to round 2.

Sorry JKL, Little Wing was just too rockin'.

It was?
Maybe I should force myself to go back and listen to it past the three minute mark...
Anyway, not a fan of either, but a little less not a fan of Ships in the Night, which gets my vote.

I tried!
But then came that sax player, sounding like he was abusing a baby elephant...
Maybe the sound on my computer is screwy somehow, I dunno.

Wow, maybe you should read the CIG to Jazz so you can read about Sanborn, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane and some other great Jazz sax players. Then maybe you'd be able to differentiate between the sounds of a single reed woodwind instrument in the hands of a legend and a cartoon elephant who uses a bilabial fricative as its sound effect.

My approach to music is a bit simpler than that.
If it requires me to read up on it to enable me to find the difference between the piece of music in question and the cheap sound effect in a children's cartoon, it's probably not worth doing so for me, legend or not.

LITTLE WING
(Eric Clapton / Sheryl Crow)

The other song isn't bad at all, but it can't do much against Hendrix covered by Clapton

Realistically, you shouldn't need to read up on it, I was just trying to help you out and obviously it isn't worth it for me to tell you or explain to you the difference. It would take more of an educated ear and by your statement you don't qualify.

But at least knowing this explains some of the music nominations we've seen from you.

I have to agree with Emperor - maybe our pc is screwy too as I didnt care at all for Little Wing and I was kinda looking forward to hearing Eric Clapton and Sheryl Crow sing this duet.

Admittedly, I don't think that duet is quite as good as the Derek and the Dominoes version. They may have just been having a slightly off night.

I should've picked the Sanborn/Bruce version of Bird Alone, so I could watch Norton squirm. :devious:
