View Full Version : Ben Affleck as Daredevil
I've seen a lot of people in here say that Ben is not a good choice for Daredevil, hes a pretty boy, he can't do action etc... I disagree. Ben has been good in serveral of his movies (true, some have sucked) but he can act. Second Kevin Smith has said that Ben nailed the role. Yes I know the two of them have been friends for a long time but Smith is a long time Daredevil fan and has writen for the character, he knows daredevil as well anyone. And when you see Kevin talking on DVD commentarys you see he isn't above saying his friends did a bad job when they did. Last, and this is the most important, Ben is a fan of daredevil. Unlike Toby, Hugh, Patrick, Ian etc... Ben knew the character long before he was even considered to the role and is going to do something many actors don't do when playing a superhero - play Daredevil seriously. He has a passion for the character and that will come across on the screen.
This is part of his forward to the trade paperback of Smiths run on Daredevil. "I was fascinated by this man, this red-suited saint who always seemed to end up a martyr. I read and re-read the panels where Elektra staggered down the street, wounded by her own weapons at Bullseyes hand, and died in Murdocks arms. I still remember the panel where, hanging from a clothesline Daredevil let Bullseye drop. For the first time hero didn't save somebody. He actually let Bullseye die (or get paralyzed). It was my own personal induction into the world of personal ambiguity. It was a dark corner, a place where my sympathies were uncertain(am I the only one who ever rooted for Bullseye?). It was a strange and wonderful place where true love was always tragic, heros had a dark side, villains were roguishly likable and the best one could hope for was some sliver of redemption."
Ben Affleck wrote this in 1998 or 1999, long before he was even considered to play Daredevil. Who else would better to play a character then someone who cares that much about him? Would you rather have someone who looks excatly like Murdock in the books and isn't a "pretty boy" but has never read a comic in his life, or Ben who may not look perfectly the part as hes drawn and who 14 year old girls tend to like but LOVES the character and going to give him the respect us (the fans) know it deserves?

I personally don't have anything against Ben playing the part of Daredevil. I do think that he is arrogant though (As many stars are). Seeing the making of Jenny on the block, and him trying to act like a hardass kinda made me laugh. I mean him running around in a wifebeater flexing. Please (what does he weigh like 160 pounds?). He is a good actor though, and should fill the role of Daredevil well. I'd rather see him then girly looking Leonardo Di Caprio. I can't wait to see the movie. I just hope that I don't have to hear the 14 year old girls moaning and groaning whenever Ben takes off his shirt.

I think your right. Ben wasnt the greatest choice, I would have chosen someone like Pierce from 007.

It's good to finally see some people not bashing the film before they see it. I am going in with an open mind, knowing some things are inconsistant with the comic. I want to enjoy the movie.
Ben isn't Oscar caliber, but is far better than someone like Keanu, etc. I think he will be fine. I also have no problems with Clarke as the Kingpin. He's black. So what? He's a great actor. It's really up to the writers and choreographers now. The cast is fine. Let's just hope they remembered to write a decnt story for the movie. Here's to hoping!:)

Elektra dies
AMAZING!
I must say that I was far from dissapointed - each actor really nailed their respective characters, and each did it with a passion.
I don't mind Ben Affleck as Daredevil...I don't see why everyone has a problem with it...

Matt Murdock...British?!?
If the buzz is any indicator, that movie's gonna make some huge bank.

Elektra can't die. Jennifer Garner is being signing on to do a solo Elektra movie. If they kill her, they can't make that movie.
Yes they can, they just adapt the coming back from the dead thing she did in the comics, I men she's gone and done it a couple of times now I believe.

"Elektra dies." LOL!
That's kinda like saying, "The boat sinks," and then someone else saying "Jeez, I can't believe you told me the end to Titanic!"
But thanks for trying to spoil it anyway.:D

Personally, I think it's rather foolish to say Affleck was good/bad for the role until you actually see the movie. When Elijah Woods was cast as Frodo, a ton of people were wailing and gnashing teeth, but I, having gone into Fellowship thinking he wouldn't be particularly good, have found him to be quite excellent in the role.
As for Affleck, I think he has a sardonic humor that can certainly lend to his credibility as Matt Murdock. Whether or not he can do the action scenes... two words - Tobey Maguire. I would have picked Affleck for a superhero role before Maguire in a second.
"Personally, I think it's rather foolish to say Affleck was good/bad for the role until you actually see the movie." - Not always. When I heard John-Rys Davis would be playing Gimli I knew he would be great at it, same with Chris Lee as Suarman. I knew Patrick Stwert would be perfect as Prof. X - sometimes you see a trailer and you can tell the actor is going to do a great job, I think Ben Affleck is coming off like that in the Daredevil trailer for reasons I've already said.
I don't think Elektra will die in the movie, for a couple reasons. First there are rumors of an Elektra spin off movie for which they would need her alive, plus they have Daredevil sequals planed if the movie makes money, and besides Elektra, Kingpin and Bullseye who else does DD have to fight?, The Owl? I could see Elektra leaving at the end of the film, maybe being injuried but I doubt she'll die.
Second you can't kill her and bring her back to life. That kinda stuff never works very well in comics and it works it even worse in movies. They couldn't make Daredevil 2 with him bringing Elektra back to life.
I thought Toby Maguire was great as Peter Parker. He looked the role, pulled off the character. Parker isn't susposed to be big, good looking or the most confident guy in the world and Tody played him well. Parker is the last guy anyone would expect to be Spider-Man, thats the whole point of it.

He was decent in that movie where he lost his job. Other than that, he's not that appealing as an actor. Kevin Smith seems to have a soft spot for the guy. That movie Chasing Amy really sucked, and him as Dare Devil is a joke.

See, you're not in on the joke. The man is a fantastic actor. He's so good he's convinced you that he's a bad actor. It's like post-avante garde psychology, wherein he plays the role of a bad actor playing a role.
Read between the lines, sir.

I am going to ignore this comment. Jason Lee was pure gold in that movie.

Are you high. That movie was awful. I'm not dissing Jason Lee as i do like him as an actor, but the movie was really nothing to give praises about. Its not a movie you'd pay money to see. And that chicks voice, or jezus, shoot me now. Click...click....Bang!
You didn't really ignore my comment did you.

I am a firm believer in "different strokes for different folks", so all I can really say is that I liked the movie. The overall story was pretty good and Jason Lee made the movie for me.
And, no, I didn't really ignore your comment. I responded to it, didn't I? ;)
