Well I bought a "Donorship level"-Platinum so I could have a custom avatar and the ability to create polls on the front page. You down load an image to create your custom avatar. This is available on the same page you got your standard avatar.

Simply go to the front page and the top topic is DOUBLE DONOR DAYS. It would be a good time to donate as all levels are half price!

You need to be at least a Bronze Donor to have a custom avatar. With the Double Donor Days going on right now you get a year's Bronze donorship for $5, and you get some other neat extras as well - most notably the fact that the ads vanish. :) Totally worth it IMO.
In order to donate you go to your User CP and then click the 'Paid Subscriptions' link. That gives you a list of all availible donor levels and what perks they have.
Keep in mind today is the last Double Donor Day though... tomorrow a Bronze Donorship will cost $10.

10 bucks is not a bad amount to donate if you're short on cash.
I gives you a lot for your donation.
It's worth it for the units section(which is free) and no advertisements alone.

Just having the ads gone is well worth it. I think that really makes the pages load faster also.
