View Full Version : The "Your career at Starfleet" game

This is a very simple game. I'm not sure if it will be fun or boring, but there's no harm in trying.

This game is set during the time of the Original Series.

You have a total of 15 Skill Points to use during the course of the game. The object is to graduate from Starfleet and eventually get a command of your own. I'll take up to ten players.

Each round, you'll be given a task to do and a base percentage of succeeding. You can use up Skill Points to a task to improve you chances of succeeding. But once you use a Skill Point, it's gone forever.

During your time at Starfleet Academy, you will all have the same task each round. If you fail at two of the four tasks at the academy, you are kicked out of the game.

Once you're assigned to a ship as an Ensign, you will each be given your own randomly assigned task as you all rotate through different departments to get experience. Sometimes, failing a task just means you don't get a Command Point. Sometimes, it means death and removal from the game.

When you succeed, you gain a Command Point. If the task would have meant death if you failed, then you also get a Skill Point back.

When you get to 15 Command Points, you are given command of your own Starship.

EXAMPLE:

Ensign Jones is assisgned to Engineering when the Impulse Engine radiation shield fails. He crawls into the Jeffries Tube to fix the problem, with a 60% chance of succeeding. Failure means death by radiation poisoning. Each Skill point spent adds 5% to the chance of success.

Ensign Jones posts whether he wants to spend any Skill points (and how many), then I generate a random percentage number to see if he suceeds.

If he does, he gets a Command point and (since failure would have meant death) a Skill point.

If your interested in playing, post on this thread. We'll begin tomorrow if we have at least five players.

Okay, so everyone has 15 Skill pts. to spend and no Command pts. yet.

Here's your first task:

The Freshman cadets are all to be transported to Planet 2 in the Regulan system, set down without equipment in a desolate swamp filled with icky Regulan Bloodworms. This is a Survival Test, forcing you to live off the land for one week. All cadets will be carefully monitored and beamed to safety if they are in danger, so there is no risk to life or limb this time. But failing the test will be a black mark on your record. Remember, you MUST succeed at two of the four tasks you will be given during your Academy years to avoid flunking out.

There is a 70% base chance of success. For each Skill pt. you choose to spend, the chance of success is increased 10%.

You have until Noon Eastern time tomorrow to post that you are spending Skill points. If you don't post, the default is you are NOT spending any points.

You know, I shouldn't pass judgment. You're likely doing the Aloisius Lightbringer Cathander Henry Princess Cupcake Alexander family proud by joining Starfleet. Why, if you work hard and study, you may attain a position that has as of yet eluded your family's reach. Custodial services, perhaps, or surveying pockets of methane for the Federation.

The Sophmore year at the Academy is the most academically challenging. In fact, the essays required by one of the teachers--Commodore Ace Brickbat (Ret)--are notoriously difficult. Every Skill Point you spend adds 5% to your chances of passing.

Well, you've all made it to your Junior Year. One of the key tests this year is a tactical combat simulation. You are in a one-man space ship in tight orbit around Pluto. A computer controlled ship is also in orbit, on the opposite side of the planet from you. Both ships have ten missles and ten anti-missle missles (a hit generates an EMP that knocks out the damaged ship without hurting the pilot). Winning the combat against the computer ship requires seat-of-your-pants calculations and finely-honed instincts.

You have a 60% chance of succeeding. Each skill point you spend adds 10% to your chances.

Everyone has until Noon eastern on Monday to post if you want to spend skill points.

Well, EmperorNorton and Thawmus aren't quite quick enough with their finely-honed instincts and fail the test. Everyone else passes. JackAssterson and Wintremute are in the running for class valivictorian.

You are all now Seniors and each of you must take the legendary and highly secret Kobiayashi Moru test. Previous cadets have all been sworn to secrecy as to its nature, so none of you know what you are gettng into. There's a rumor that it's a test of character with no real way to win, but no one really believes that. After all, it's well-known that Captain James Kirk beat the scenario.

You all have a base 70% of getting a passing grade in the test. Because you don't necessarily know how to prepare, each skill point you use only adds 2% to your chances.

You all have until Noon Eastern Time tomorrow to decide whether to spend skill points.

Go for broke.

Cadet Thawmus Aloisius Lightbringer Cathander Henry Princess Cupcake Alexander, will spend zero points.

(In hindsight, I would have totally just put points into the 3rd test so I could sail through this one. I half-considered it, but decided to ride my luck.)

Gee whiz, the test IS a test of character. Who would have thunk it?

Anyway, madslaust and JackAssterson both fail when they throw fits at “losing” and beat up the cadets serving as helmsmen during in the simulation. Sadly, that means madslaust washes out of the Academy. The rest of you graduate, though, and are all commissioned as Ensigns in Star Fleet. Now you don’t have to worry about flunking out—just dying.

Assignments to ships and missions are all random. Some of you might have a consistently easy time—some may have a hard time every mission. It’s all random chance.

Munchoboy 7/3

Assigned to the heavy cruiser Exeter. When the ship is ambushed by Orion pirates, a lucky hit takes down the starboard shields, impulse engines and bridge weapon controls. Ensign Munchoboy, on duty in the Starboard Phaser room, is the only conscious crewman able to operate the phasers. If he can fire an accurate barrage at the pirate ships, he can save the Exeter.

If he fails, he (and his crewmates) all die. So if he succeeds, he gets a skill point as well as a command point.

Base chance for success is 60%, plus 5% for each skill point spent.
Space Jawa 11/3

Assigned to the destroyer Alexander. While exploring a jungle planet, a crewmate is attacked by a six-legged jungle beast. If Ensign Jawa can make a perfect shot with his hand phaser, he can save his crewmate. Otherwise, he’ll accidentally disintegrate his mate as well as the beast.

Base Chance of success is 65%, plus 5% for each skill point spent.
EmperorNorton 7/3

Assigned to the destroyer Sargon. The captain leaves the ship for a conference on Starbase 7. Ensign Norton is assigned to care for the captain’s beloved Vulcan night-blooming orchid while the captain is gone. It takes a lot of careful care to keep this plant alive. If he fails, the grouchy captain will probably give him a bad overall performance evaluation.

Base Chance of success is 55%, plus 10% for each skill point spent.
hail eris 7/3

Assigned to Outpost 17, one of the line of artificial asteroids that keep watch on the edge of the Romulan Neutral Zone. This boring duty is made suddenly exciting when Ensign eris stumbles over information that one of his crewmates has sold out to the Romulans. Only he has a chance to hurry to the shuttle bay and stop the traitor before he escapes with secret information.

Base chance of success is 60%, plus 5% for each skill point spent.
Thawmus 10/3

Assigned to Starbase 5 and put in charge of shuttle maintenance. Can Ensign Thawmus get a good performance evaluation by beating the old record on refitting shuttles quickly?

Base chance of success is 60%, plus 5% for each skill point spent.
readyeddy? 7/3

Assigned to the scout ship Bowie. When a Federation Ambassador and his Orion wife are taken aboard as passengers, the wife starts making advances on Ensign readyeddy. Can the Ensign resist her advances and the lure of the pheromones she’s exuding, or will he embarrass Star Fleet and cause an interplanetary incident?

Base chance of success is 50%, plus 5% for each skill point spent.

Rokk Krinn 10/3

Assigned to the Transport/Tug Al Rachid. When Andorian Fever sweeps through the Passenger Pod the Al Rachid is currently towing, it’s up to Ensign Krinn to face down a panicky crowd to keep them from forcibly ejected several sick passengers out the airlock.

Base Chance of Success is 60%, plus 5% for each skill point spent
JackAssterson 13/3

Assigned to the light cruiser El Cid. During an exploration of an ancient alien ruin on an unexplored planet, Ensign JackA finds himself locked in hand-to-hand combat with a shape shifting vampire creature!!!

If he loses, he dies. So he earns a skill point as well as a command point if he lives.

Base chance of success is 55%, plus 5% for each skill point spent.

You all have until tomorrow at Noon to post whether you want to use skill points. After that, we’ll probably have to go to twice a week on this game so I can keep up.

Thawmus
11/03/2009, 13:23
Of course I can refit shuttles quickly. No points necessary.

Instead, I'll send a transmission to K. Bragg of me dressing up as a Vampire. He should find it hilarious, since he totally won't be engaged in hand to hand combat with one at the time. Especially a shape shifting vampire, those are pretty rare. I should make the vid warp my image, so it looks like I'm shape shifting. Yeah! That'd be hilarious. He'd get a kick out of it. :classic:

Base chance for success is 60%, plus 5% for each skill point spent.

Wiping the sweat from his brow, and shaking thoughts of injured crewmates from his mind, Cadet Muncho takes steady aim at the Orion vessels and prepares to send those pirates to Hades.

"May the Great Bird of the Galaxy guide my hand!"

Ensign Muncho spends 3 skill points.

Space Jawa

Dang and here I thought I had gotten to it. Still, glad to know I didn't flunk out. Guess that means since I had been planning on spending points, that leaves me better off, huh?

Anyway, I'll spend 1 skill point towards the effort to save the crewmate.

Kalel21
11/03/2009, 13:45
Ya know, this might make a fun card game. It'd be easy to print out on card stock and some sort of tokens could be used for skill points and command points. Players would roll percentage dice to see if they succeed with each mission.

I may very well do this. I'm pretty sure I can get some of my friends to give it a try.

Everyone posted, so here's the results a little early.

Ensign hail eris doesn't quite make it to the shuttle bay in time to stop the traitor from escaping. That'll be a black mark on his record!!!

But the rest of you succeed in your missions, including saving the USS Exetor from Orion pirates and defeating an alien shape-shifter in hand-to-hand combat.

Here's the next set of missions:

Munchoboy 5/4

Assigned to the light cruiser USS Castor. While patrolling near the border of Klingon Space, you are taking a shift as helmsman. Your ship is spying on a Klingon D7 Cruiser and you must match its maneuvers exactly in order to pass as a shadow on its sensors.

Base chance of success is 60%. 5% per skill point.

Space Jawa 10/4

Assigned to the heavy cruiser USS Yorktown. The shielding in the engine room is damaged following a malfunction. You must crawl into the Jeffries Tube and effect repairs before half the crew (including yourself) is killed by a hard radiation leak.

Base chance of success is 60%. 10% per skill point. You die if you fail and earn a skill point as well as a command point if you succeed.

EmperorNorton 4/4

Assigned to the heavy cruiser USS Kongo. While on a diplomatic mission on a planet near the Klingon sphere of influence, local customs and a series of bizarre coincidences force you to engage in gladiatorial combat against a Klingon warrior. The fight is to the death.

Base chance of success is 50%. 10% per skill point. You die if you fail and earn a skill point as well as a command point if you succeed.

hail eris 5/3

Assigned to Memory Alpha. While stationed at the Federation’s central library facility, you are called upon to investigate the murder of a visiting Vulcan scientist.

Base chance of success is 65%. 5% per skill point.

Thawmus 10/4

Assigned to the science ship USS Sheldon Cooper. While studying an ion storm, you are tasked with the difficult task of keeping the ship’s sensors properly calibrated despite the high background radiation.

Base chance of success is 70%. 2% per skill point.

readyeddy? 5/4

Assigned to Colony A-5637Q. While serving as Starfleet liaison at a new colony, you encounter a disembodied brain that is attempting to mentally possess the colonists. Can you stand up to it in a battle of mental strength? Or will your brain implode?

Base chance of success is 55%. 5% per skill point. You die if you fail and earn a skill point as well as a command point if you succeed.

Rokk Krinn 10/4

Assigned to the destroyer USS Achilles. Well, SOMEBODY has to clean out the waste disposal units. And your captain is really detailed in his post-cleaning inspections, so you can’t miss so much as a smudge.

Base Chance of Success is 55%. 5% per skill point.

JackAssterson 9/4

Assigned to Starbase 13. Paperwork—paperwork—paperwork. Administrative Assistant to the Commodore isn’t the most exciting work in the world, but someone has to do the paperwork.

Base Chance of Success is 60%. 10% per skill point.

The deadline will be FRIDAY at Noon eastern time. (I'll need a little more time from now on to prepare missions for each round.)

Well, sadly, your Academy graduating class suffers its first casualty, as Ensign Norton falls to a Klingon B’tleth. Also, Rokk Krinn fails his Waste Disposal inspection.

The following crew have reached 5 Skill points—one third of the way to victory—and are promoted to Lieutenant: Munchoboy, Space Jawa, Thawmus, readyeddy?, and JackAssterson.

Here’s the next set of missions:

Munchoboy 5/5

Assigned to the Heavy Cruiser USS Hornet. An ancient and potentially powerful alien artifact is discovered on a newly-explored planet. While transporting the artifact via shuttle to Starbase 8, you are captured by Klingons. Escaping with the artifact won’t be easy.

Base chance of success is 50%, plus 5% per skill point. If you fail, you die, so success earns a skill point as well as a command point.

Space Jawa 9/5

Assigned to the light cruiser USS Loki. During a diplomatic stopover at a primitive planet, the Lt. Commander in charge of your away team is killed and an ion storm cuts off communications with the ship. You find yourself the only person in a position to stop a world-wide Jihad by rescuing a captured baby princess from terrorists.

Base chance of success is 55%, plus 10% per skill point.

hail eris 5/4

Assigned to the Destroyer USS Cortez. A skirmish with a Klingon ship leaves the bridge a mess after a disrupter hit. Guess who is given the tedious task of rewiring the Sub-Space radio array in less than 24 hours?

Base chance of success is 65%, plus 5% per skill point

Thawmus 10/5

Assigned to the science ship USS Lagrange. A plague sweeps across Rigel 5. You lead one of several teams tracking down the one colonist whose blood contains the anti-bodies needed to make a cure. It’s too bad the colonist is wanted for murder—it makes him difficult to find.

Base Chance of success is 55%, plus 5% per skill point.

readyeddy 4/5

Assigned to the heavy cruiser USS Constitution. The First Officer assigns you the complicated task of working up the duty roster for the transporter room—figuring in the different rest cycles needed for transporter techs of at least four different species. It’s a more complicated job than you at first suspected.

Base chance of success is 70%, plus 5% per skill point.

Rokk Krinn 10/4

Assigned to the destroyer USS Ares. During your 24 hour leave on Janus 13, you get involved in a bar fight and end up in the local slammer. Only some fast talking and a little haggling with the cops can keep this unfortunate incident off your official record.

Base chance of success is 60%, plus 5% per skill point.

JackAssterson 9/5

Assigned to the Transport/Tug USS Doppler. Your ship is towing a damaged Tellerite mining ship to the nearest spaceport. Is your hunch that the Tellerite captain is guilty of sabotaging his own ship for insurance reasons correct? And can you gather the evidence you need to prove it on your own when your captain refuses to give credence to your hunch?

Base Chance of Success is 55%, plus 5% per skill point.

I'm really buckling down to get this turned into a card game so I can try it with some friends. I expect to be done within a week (it's a really simple game to create other than thinking up a total of 100 different missions.)

If anyone is interested, I'll be happy to email the results to you when I'm finished. The cards will be on a template that allow them to be printed out on business card stock. How to Play instructions will be included. You can PM me an email address if you're interested.

Also, feel free to PM me any mission ideas you might have. I've got about 50 total made up and I can come up with another 50 eventually, but I've no qualms about stealing someone else's idea. (Since I'm not doing this for commercial purposes, I myself will be borrowing mission ideas from various science fiction sources.)

Darn it, guys. I was going to post results early since you had all posted. I spend 45 minutes writing it up, then when I click Submit, I go to one of those "server too busy" messages. When I can get into the site again, my post is gone.

I should have done what I do with the B-17 game, which is to write it up on a Word document and cut/paste is here. But, sadly, I didn't.

Drat--drat--drat. It's fun to write up the results once, but reconstructing the whole round is no fun at all. I'll figure out what to do tomorrow.

Kalel21
11/09/2009, 17:59
I still haven't gotten around to re-creating the results of the last round. Sorry about the delay--obviously, the server was being controlled by Klingon spies when I tried to post the results yesterday. At this point, I'm afraid I'm not sure when I'll be able to restart the game (since I've got to make up a B-17 mission this week as well.)

If anyone's interested, I do have the complete game formated to print out as a card game on business card stock. I'm still willing to e-mail it to anyone who is interested.

Hey, Tim! We played this last week at Darkside! It was awesome, you did a really great job!

I'm thinking of restarting this game with a new thread. Now that I've made it into a card game, there would be no problem coming up with missions for everyone each round. Would there still be interest in playing this one?

The Gods of Luck are capricious indeed.

I shall play again.

But I must come up with a new, equally or moreso awesome name.

I'd like to reserve a spot in this.

I'll start the thread up on Monday and give each of you who express interest here a slot.

I'm not sure if we'll include the Academy part this time, since I didn't use that in the card game. But otherwise the rules will pretty much be the same.

Kal,
Give me a shot in the Fleet! I can save everyone.

That's what Kirk said.

But did it save all those poor Red Shirts?

NO, IT DID NOT!

Red Shirts are not "everyone". They are Red Shirts. If they didn't want to be fodder they would have worked harder in school and to become Blue shirts or Yellow shirts.

Kal,
Give ME a shot! I can save everyone but the red shirts. And maybe a blue or yellow shirts since they die too... Sometimes anyway. :noid:

Though i believe anyone in the main cast of any show are Immortal  and if they do die then they weren't what I consider to be "the main cast". :cheeky: Unless you count the fact that Dr. Who technically died 9 times.

Hasn't Doctor Who died TEN times now?
