OK, I think this ones pretty simple, just choose some of your favorite songs from the 50s and 60s (going off the few rules below), giving links to each song please, and weve got ourselves a new Rock Wars TOC. :)

As usual, any song thats been in a RW before is ineligible here (please see the below list for them all if youre unsure). I figure a 128 song TOC for this one, so lets start us all out with say 6 song picks for each of us, though no more than 3 songs from any one group will be allow, and only 1 song per band from a single member here.

So what say you, lets start getting this list together and see if we cant get one very cool list from these classic decades (50s/60s) ready for us to pit against one another!

Thanks all.

Okay, not really a fan of this era too much, but I did a quick search of the two decades and found some songs I like.

YOU JUST KEEP ME HANGIN' ON (The Supremes) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKQbcJyVKR0) - 1966
Assuming this version is okay as it is not the same as the version on the list

YESTERDAY (The Beatles) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsLj8blqSgQ) - 1965
Would be Hey Jude, but that was on the above list

I'M A BELIEVER (The Monkees) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfuBREMXxts) - 1967

Johnny Cash - Folsom Prison Blues (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWsuVuw5JO4)

I could nominate dozens more...I'll probably change some songs when others come to mind.

I know what you mean to a degree Mags, as off the top of my head I dont know a HEAP of songs from this era, BUT if you do some slight research (as you did), I think everyone will find some real gems here! :)

Also, for the sake of making it a bit easier for me when Im compiling the entire song list, if we could list your songs in the following format, that would be very much appreciated.

Example:

I'M A BELIEVER (The Monkees) - song link listed

I know what you mean to a degree Mags, as off the top of my head I dont know a HEAP of songs from this era, BUT if you do some slight research (as you did), I think everyone will find some real gems here! :)

Also, for the sake of making it a bit easier for me when Im compiling the entire song list, if we could list your songs in the following format, that would be very much appreciated.

Example:

I'M A BELIEVER (The Monkees) - song link listed
Edited my list to appease your formatting.

Let's get my nominees started. Where possible, I'll be linking to MP3s as opposed to YouTube clips, as the YouTube audio stream tends to "flatten" the audio signal, causing some of the production brilliance of the era to be lost (having to use MP3s is bad enough, but I can't exactly send around vinyl copies of all these tracks):

The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil (http://www.fusion45.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/Stones/The%20Rolling%20Stones%20-%20Sympathy%20for%20the%20Devil.mp3)

The Ronettes - Be My Baby (http://www.deliciouscopitone.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/be-my-baby.mp3)
Tom Jones - Delilah (http://airbornedivision.com/holding/Tom%20Jones%20-%20Delilah.mp3)

Two more as I ponder this throughout the day...

Well personally I think Suspicious Minds is a biggie, and probably my favorite Elvis song. Though in saying what you have, it reminds me Id better place a Beatles pic before they all get taken. I think Ill go with:

I was going to nominate Runaway, but since readyeddy? already did that, I am not going to let an hour's worth of listening and re-listening to that song go to waste and post three links (in order of preference).
Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TLLcvWeiKw), here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0S13mP_pfEc), or here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGlUnzaFvGU&feature=related).Take your pick. :)

As for my nominees, I guess I will go with:

1) At the Hop, by Danny and the Juniors (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-oiH0V1sBU) (1957).

2) Nobody But Me, by the Human Beinz (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxtJoGdujYo) (1968).

3) Reach Out (I'll Be There), by the Four Tops (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xggIgxW_xis&feature=related) (1966).

4) The Kids Are Alright, by The Who (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmowtt9vhLY) (1965). It's at this point that I start wondering if I should just load up the rest of my list with Who songs, but decide against it. You can count on more coming, though. Too great a band, even though the Beatles and the Stones get the most praise.

5) Runaround Sue, by Dion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c49klxPex-k) (1961).

6) Be My Baby, by the Ronettes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzhbGaCwBzs) (1963).

Not all of these are my absolute, absolute favorites, but I wanted to catch a mood more than just make a list. I bumped Procol Harum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZ0BEXn_6mE) to make room for Danny and the Juniors, but felt it important to include some 50s music.

For me, it was a toss-up between Good Vibrations and God Only Knows - I ended up going with the latter because I felt like it was a stronger track throughout (Good Vibrations kind of breaks down at about the halfway mark, before picking up for the final minute of the song).

Sigh. All right. Three more picks from me. I'm saving my last one for when I remember that song that I really, really like that for some reason I haven't remembered yet.

Smoke Gets in Your Eyes - the Platters http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htmIjfNuZqs

Crazy - Patsy Cline http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iX0zfv8Ov5I

Unchained Melody - Righteous Brothers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6xb_ddP4nM

I seem to be going for the ballads here. But they did them so well back then.

Oh and all right. To wrap it up:
Duke of Earl - Gene Chandler http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2gvaDTpKMk

Now that I've posted my nominations, I can chime im with my own list of suggestions for Incredibile. Or anyone else who may need some.

Blueberry Hill - Fats Domino (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQQCPrwKzdo)

All I Have to Do Is Dream - Everly Brothers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uKUH6joeEs)

Come Go With Me - The Del Vikings (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XufQAdIzqGI)

Under the Boardwalk - The Drifters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3WXIom2IT1M)

The Lion Sleeps Tonight - the Tokens (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LBmUwi6mEo)

Stand By Me - Ben E. King (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vbg7YoXiKn0)

Only the Lonely (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZ4xALSUysc)

Not to mention that the Beach Boys, the Monkees, Credence, and Simon and Garfunkel are so far woefully under-represented in this. I wouldn't presume to choose just one or two of the dosens of gems from them.

So pick my suggestions, not these other guys.

There's so many great songs to choose from, this has to be the toughest nomination thread yet.
I wanted to see if I could narrow my nominations down to a single year (initially, it was 1968), but I ended up going with a four-year spread (1966-69). Two decades of some of the best music in pop history is just too much to choose from.

those are great years and I believe that 1969 is considered by many to be the single greatest year of album and music releases in the rock era.

I chose mine as a couple of personal favorites and a few "just great songs" and hopefully open up some ears to the awesome sounds that came out of those decades.

First of all - So Long Marianne is a great choice. I'm glad someone picked that.

I would have loved to pick a VU song, but I wanted to grab something no one else would and that came down to some of the Psychedelic songs, Nina Simone and VU. As much as I would love to see I'll be your Mirror, Femme Fatale, White Light/White Heat I wound up passing for personal reasons. Mostly because I would get way to snobbish if a VU song was crushed in the first round and I have a feeling it would be.

Now you got me in the mood for some VU. I was going to go with their version of White Light White Heat, but something inside me said, "No, you want tom listen to Mick Ronson's killer guitar version that's part T Rex style boogie and part Bowie circa 73/74.

I love the fact that two stories are going on at once, the first; an old English tale about a love made impossible and the second in the background, an anti-war tale. Here's Simon & Garfunkel's 'Scarborough Fair'.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XEhAXQ5QQzs

I'd have nominated their 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' but that came out in 1970. That list should be fun.

#5 is a favorite band of the '60s who hasn't been represented here. I'll select their most famous song from their controversial Ed Sullivan appearance (where they actually used the word 'higher'). Here's the Doors, "Light My Fire".

#6 goes back to the '50s. It was a toss up between choosing this and a song I've discovered lately (Beyond the Sea). But this I have always loved:

Bobby Darin "Mack the Knife"

And my final choice. So many good songs/artists that will get missed. Going through so many options. CSN's "Suite; Judy Blue Eyes", Four Seasons "Walk Like A Man" and "Rag Doll", Jefferson Airplane's "Somebody to Love" (and the lesser known "Lather"), heck even "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is way up there for me.

For my #7 I'll give the edge to a classic Beatles tune that always, always, always makes me feel good: "Here Comes the Sun".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQKcpmnRsP0&feature=related

As Beatles song might no longer be allowed nominated I'll choose this alternate by Manfred Mann, "Do Wah Ditty Ditty".

Thanks for letting me play. Should be fun and hopefully I'll get the full swing of it.

Here's a favorite folk tune; Turn, Turn, Turn by the Byrds.

Welcome aboard. Turn, Turn, Turn was one of the songs I was considering until I decided to champion the earlier stuff.

No one picked "Downtown" by Petula Clark?

Glad you took me up on my invitation to check this out.

While I like The Lion Sleeps Tonight a lot, it didn't make my final cut. I'd have personally gone with Beyond the Sea over Mack the Knife, but that's me. They're both good, and Mack the Knife does have a certain something.

OK, in checking the list of songs and nominators, it looks like in order to fill out our 128 song list that we may all need to pick 1 more song (unless we get some more newbies to cast their choices, barring they plan to participate in the TOC, that is)

Hey all. A bit torn on which Beatles song I want to go with in the end, any thoughts on either of these two:

ALL MY LOVING (The Beatles) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GGamWP9Q5A

DTM

Oh no, I was one of the three Beatles songs originally with I Saw Her Standing There, but now Im not sure if I want that or All My Loving (I want to represent the Beatles in a bit different tone than the ones that are already up, Yesterday and Guitar...) Id love to pick Hey Jude (possibly my favorite song ever) but it was already in the Favorite Song TOC.

Gargantua
11/07/2009, 18:27
Both of the other Beatles nominations have them in their slower, more reflective mood. I Saw Her Standing There is a little more hard-rockin'.

Even All My Loving is a little more up tempo than the other two, but I think I Saw Her Standing There is a bit more contrasting in mood and style. Up to you of course, but I think your original pick gives it a little broader Beatle variety

I have a special place in my heart for the very early Beatles stuff like this and I Want to Hold Your Hand. Sure they're not as mature examples of songwriting and performance as their later stuff, but these just make you feel good.

I don't think DTM said anything about 8th picks yet. No jumping the gun, you! :)

So many good songs left. Tempted to choose Judy Collins 'Both Sides Now' but instead I'll take a song about her. My favorite era in the 50s/60s is easily the late 60s pop, rock, folk flower power stuff. This song is all of those:

if you look back through this thread, I was begging people to nominate this song. But oh well. This is why I wish we were doing seperate decades. There's too much good stuff per decade. I don't think anybody nominated Cream for instance.
If the decades had been separated we would have had more room to expose people to good music that isn't so high profile. I would have liked to have nominated Mary Hopkin's "Those Were The Days" for instance. I did sneak in a Pretty Things song though not because I expect it to win but because I hope to let more people know it exists and this is a good format for exposure.
By the way DTM, The group is The Pretty Things and the song is "Private Sorrow". You made the same mistake with the It's a Beautiful Day song I nominated for one hit wonders,

If we did seperate decade TOCs, we would have done it at 64 songs, meaning we each would have gotten half the picks we did for this one, so in the end a 128 song TOC encompassing 2 decades pretty much works out the same. And Ill check your song and ammend as needed on the list. :)

For what it's worth, I probably would have split them not straight on decades lines. I'd have liked to have seen something like 50s-1964 and then a 1964-1969. Most of the early part of the 60s was more musically akin to the late 50s than to the later 60s.
