We've all heard it many times before. "This character should never have been a pog!". There are lots of them this would apply to too. This article is about the ones that made it. We take a look at the few supporting characters that made it out of the two dimensional world of tokens and made it to full fledged 3D figures.

Updates Aug 23 with B&B/BN and WoS figures.

This is a look at figures that have made the jump from being a one click of life meat shield to being a full formed 3D figure.

First up, we have two of the first Bystanders put out.
Alfred and Lois Lane. They were first introduced in the DC Map Pack which came with an assortment of other bystanders some maps and some scenarios.
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=7519
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=7526
Of these two, Alfred made quite the splash when he first came on the scene. Six points to give your Wildcards the Batman Stealthy team ability. Lois wasn't quit so popular. No damage and a low attack weren't that appealing to people.

Their second appearance was made when they came out as 3D figures in Origins. Alfred with his Batman TA, Opening Perplex going to Support and an 8 attack with Energy Explosion, all for 34 points. A very popular and highly sought after piece. Then there was Lois Lane. The sight of her made many a players heart flutter in anticipation, much like Superman's, I'm sure. She wasn't much of a combat piece (one click with a 9 attack, but only one damage) but, what she brought to the table was the Superman ally team ability for 17 points. Now, your Wildcards could see in to Stealth for next to nothing.
Alfred showed up again as a figure in the Batman Alpha set. 30 points, but he didn't have the Team ability or the Perplex. He did have a full dial of Stealth and EE, with support starting on his second click though.

Next, we have another of the first pogs, but we find out he wasn't always as he seemed. It's the Avengers Butler Jarvis.
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=7523
He showed up first in the Marvel Map Pack (again with a handful of pogs and some scenarios). 4 points and you got the Avengers Team Ability. Wasn't that big a deal until Thunderbolts came out. Now you could have ANY team ability on your Wildcard teams for 9 points. He made a second appearance in the Avengers set, no TA, but a better Defense and could now do damage for one point more. Then he had his figure come out in Secret Invasion. Turns out he was a Skrull spy. What makes him unique is he is the first figure to have two Team Abilities on his dial (Avengers and Skrull) in any regular set.

We then get Carol Ferris.
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=7521
Green Lantern, Hal Jordan's girlfriend. 3 points of a dial that looks a lot like the first Lois Lane pog. Nothing special, but if you like to build thematic teams, was a nice bit of meat shield filler for Hal. Then, in Crisis, we get her in her Star Sapphire persona. I think one of the biggest leaps from a no power piece of cardboard to a figure that can do damage. Running Shot, 3 damage and perplex. You have the option of TK, then Incapacitate as well.

In Icons, we get Renee Montoya.
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=7527
Member of the GCPD with her own little secrets (hello Batwoman). Simple 5 point filler with range and damage. In Arkham Assylum, we got The Question. Renee had been hanging out with the original Question, helping with his investigation and watching him as he dies of Cancer. She than takes over for him, seeing that his work on the conspiracies continues.

In Origins, we got a lot of figures that brought Pogs to 3D, but we also got a Pog that would later make her own 3D appearance.
Amanda Waller
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=7520
She could take two pogs out on her own in one turn, then another two the next. 6 range, 2 targets, 9 attack with Willpower. All for a measly 12 points. Then, in Arkham Asylum, we get her in a figures. Stealth up front, Mastermind and a 5 click dial with Indomitable. Throw in some Mastermind for her to throw the damage on to figures less than her 75 points and a special power giving her Leadership and Outwit.

Ted Knight, the Original Starman.
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=7528
This ones a bit different in that the time period of these figures isn't the same. The Bystander we got in Collateral Damage was Ted after he's retired the mantle and passed it on to his son. The figure we got in Origins was him in his prime as a hero in the '40s.

Next we have Ken Hale, the Gorilla Man.
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=7525
An ape as a pog. How awesome is that. Not as awesome as being the first ape pog (Say hello to Detective Chimp for that). Leap Climb with Toughness, 6 range, 9 attack and 2 damage and a 17 Defense. Most people tend to ignore those little cardboard disks on the table, but it's not advised with this one. He can hurt you. But wait, there's more. He is going to be in the upcoming Hammer Of Thor set as a fleshed out 3D figure. A new gun toting ape to hang out with Monsieur Mallah, Grodd, Ultra Humanite and the Red Ghost's Super Apes. (Detective Chimp and Congorilla may make an appearance on this Simian Super Team too)

Joe Chill.
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=7524
This is the guy that is responsible for creating Batman in most of his origin stories. 6 point stealth piece in the Justice League set. In Arkham Asylum, we get the Street Thug, but if you look at his "Real Name" on his card, we have Joe himself. Not much different that his pog, just a longer dial. 5 clicks instead of one. A bit better attack and a longer range.

And, to be a bit backwards, we have a figure that transitioned to a pog.
Jane Foster
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=7522
The Paramedic LE in Xplosion, she's Thor's girlfriend. She had Support and Willpower for her entire dial with an 8 attack for 16 points. At the time, that was huge. Then, she was demoted to a 7 point pog. 9 attack and 2 damage is the only thing I can say is good about this piece.

Edit:
With two late entries, we have Jimmy Woo, and Thor, Frog of Thunder
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=7649
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=7648
Jimmy Woo is a Chinese-American secret agent that first appeared in Yellow Claw #1 (Oct. 1956) from Atlas Comics, the 1950s predecessor of Marvel. (that makes him 53 years old.) He is currently a member of Agents of Atlas (Which seems to have the whole team (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agents_of_Atlas)in the HoT set).

The other is a Frog from Central Park named Puddlegulp that Thor encountered when he himself was turned in to a frog by Loki. He was a human that a Gypsy had cursed in to a frog. After Thor left, there was a small sliver of Mjolnir that he finds and uses it to become Throg, the Frog of Thunder

With the release of the first DC clix from the hiatus, we have 2 new figures that made the lead from 2D cardboard to 3D figures.
First up is Mera.
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=11694
As the Red Lantern "Rage" from the Blackest Night starter set, she changes from a green costume to the red. Only thing that would have made her better is if she had the "Atlantis" keyword. Then you could repaint her, theme her up with Aquaman and reunite this happy couple.

And in the Brave and the Bold, we have one that doesn't get his own figure, but he is part of a duo, and that has to count for something. Here comes Oberon, joining Mister Miracle.
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=11696

Now, we have 3 new entries from the soon to be released Web of Spider-Man
The first two, I will tell you because there isn't any spoilers attached to them, long time supporting cast in many Spider-Man story lines, they both made their first appearances in the Marvel Map packs (Much like Alfred and Lois were in the DC Map packs). The two people that have probably bossed Peter Parker around the most in his life, Mary Jane and J Jonah Jameson.
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=11695
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=11693

From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Betty_Ross#Red_She-Hulk):
During the Fall of the Hulks storyline, Betty is revealed to (this time truly) have been resurrected by the Leader and M.O.D.O.K., due to the urgings of their new ally, her father Thunderbolt Ross, who had previously kept her body in cryogenic stasis. The now villainous Doc Samson also helps Leader to brainwash Betty into an extremely confused and aggressive state.
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=11692

First up is the second Simian to make it from cardboard to a full fledged figure. Detective Chimp. His real name is Magnificent Finder of Tasty Grubs, but those that captured him in Equatorial Africa named him Bobo T. Chimpanzee. A trip to the fountain of youth gave him the ability to talk to all living creatures, including humans (As well as eternal youth as if that wasn't enough).
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=16055

Next, we have another animal key-worded figure in Lockheed. Kitty Prydes extraterrestrial pet dragon. They met him when the X-Men had been kidnapped by the Brood and taken to space. A great hero amongst his race for his skills in fighting the Brood, he chose to stay with Kitty and the X-Men and join them on Earth.
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=641&pictureid=16056

Finally, we have one that is in the upcoming Superman set which seems to feature the LoSH as a sub-theme. Matter-Eater-Lad. Tenzil Kem was the 15th member inducted in to the Legion. Coming from the planet Bismoll, microbes on that planet made all the food inedible, so his people evolved with the ability to eat all matter as a means of survival.

now we wait for others to make the transition. :) i think pog status is fine for characters like Lois and even Amanda Waller. These people are rarely on the front lines. i would like to see some other pogs make it to 3D clix-dome. Daughters of the Dragon come to mind, Swarm, SinEater, and others that actually see combat in the comics. I think pogs are good for supporting characters, like Lois.

i want LMDs of lots of people, even if theyre just generics.
there were those LE pogs....all of them!!

they made lois a fig so why not mary jane? or gwen stacy? theyd be wild cards so put batman TA on ur team then hide ranged figs with trickshot behind them.

even a j. jonah jameson would be cool, you give him an outwit power that only allows him to outwit wild card team abilities.

oh yeah!! 1 that absolutely HAS TO be a fig is franklin richards!! he was the most powerful mutant on earth!! the pog had no powers!!

And as for Congorilla (I just found a mint pog in a box of misc cards at the LCS), I have a feeling we'll see one in a set or two. That is, if Robinson's new Justice League of America lineup lasts long enough.

Lockheed on the Shadowcat Unique from Explosion added range and energy explosion to Kitty long before Lockheed was a very good bystander token.

I considered him, but I was going for lone figures. I also thought of mentioning Multiple Man, but his pog was in the same set as his figure.

Could have also done Turk Barrett as Stilt Man. But it was a one shot thing where he stole the armor and lost in it badly.

First with them on the dial from a figure in a booster though. Only other ones with more than on is Worlds Finest, SCAM and Spectre.

PS, it isn't about the figure being good, it's about coming from a pog to a figure.

Colloquially, the title is correct. Cardboard is an accepted generic nickname for the bystanders, and doesn't necessarily refer to the material of which they are made. And besides, not only can you chalk it up to poetic license, it's alliteratively and aesthetically awesome.

Cool article. Fun read. I'm glad I have all the DC once-pog-now-figure pieces. Especially Lois.

Anywho, I would just like to point out that the DC set that you refer to is called Origin. Origins is the gaming convention, unless those figures were revealed at said convention and you wanted to put that label on them.

A for content, C for spellchecking. :p

Back in the day, Franklin and Alicia Masters were the best pogs! F4 ability for like no points and all you had to do was push them to death and heal your teammates. Cheese? Yes. Helpful? Also yes.

Oh, and didn't Mary Jane have the spider ability? I seem to remember her wildcarding the f4 ability as well. Maybe Alicia didn't have it and I used MJ, I can't remember now...

Franklin didn't have the F4 ta. Alicia did (She almost ended up in this article with the Skrull Invisible Woman as she had taken on the Alicia Masters disguise)
MJ did have the Spiderman TA for 6 points. She was a must have on most Mystic (for 6 points, you just killed her and took a point of damage) and Batman ta teams (extra blocking terrain that could move along with Alfred). Xmen were also popular to put her on (Slurp, thanks for healing me of 1 life). To some extent, she was good on Defenders teams too (14 def for an easier heal)

In the last few sets, it's been kind of slow.
