View Full Version : Munchkin Play by Post -- Beta

I want to play Munchkin with Realmsers, and barring some program that allows us to do an online "live" game, this is what I came up with.
Everyone plays with the the first Munchkin deck, no expansions. (honestly, there's no reason everyone couldn't play with a different deck, but it'd be a little more coherent this way and people probably all have the first one if they have any at all)
Instead of drawing from two communal decks, each player draws from their own draw decks. Preventing cheating is the honor system -- you shuffle your decks and don't look at them.
From then on, play proceeds basically as a real game would, only by post. You fight, ask for help, deny said help (silly elf) and whatnot by and large as you would in a "live" Munchkin game. To keep things easy to track, folks should probably have a character sheet included with each post -- sheet sample included at bottom.
It'd probably have some kinks to be worked out, but I think it might work. If anyone wants to try it out, I think around three other people would be about right.
It'll (clearly) take a lot more time than a "live" Munchkin game, but by now I'm used to Mafia games that take a month, so we should be normal, yes? :knockedou
The character sheet:
At start of game:

Cool idea. Unfortunately, I only own the Super Munchkin version. If we can play using that, then I'm in.

I really should pick up more versions of this game. Right now, #1 on my list is The Good, The Bad and The Munchkin, followed by Munchkin Booty. Heck, I'd like to own a copy of all of them (of course, I'd also like to be rich enough to do this).
JackAssterson

You can mix the games -- they're all more or less compatible. My personal preference would be to have everyone running the same deck for cohesion if nothing else, but there's really no reason why it couldn't be the Supervillain Dungeon of Doom.
In Space.

Oh I know that you can mix the games (I really want to try this, but no one that I play with is willing to mix all their cards up), but I thought that for this, you strictly wanted everyone to be playing from an original Munchkin deck. Which makes sense, since it would be a lot less confusing.
If you don't mind me using the Super Munchkin deck, I'll be glad to help you test. What with this and Munchkin Mafia, I'm in a very Munchkin mood, so I plan on going out later this week and trying to pick up another version (hopefully one of the ones on my list).

Ok, everyone draw your first four cards (two door, two treasure), play whatever cards you can/want to and post your opening character sheet.

Just to clarify, Flight is a Superpower in Super Munchkin. It means that when I break away from a combat, I get +1 to my roll, meaning that I effectively need a 4, 5 or 6 instead of just 5 or 6. These items don't stack, though, so even if I have 3 items that give me Flight, I still only get a +1 bonus, not +3.

I have to admit, I laughed when I read this. :)
I remember when I was playing in the Munchkin tournament at the Toronto Fan Expo in 2008. There was 12 people in the final round, twice too many, but we had fun anyway. Game time was 90 minutes, whoever the highest level was at the end of that won. I kid you not, every single time a monster was revealed after opening a door, the played couldn't defeat it. And it wasn't because they were high level monsters, either. I remember a level 3 monster was drawn, and the person asked for some help, since he only fought like a level 2. As soon as one person volunteered to help him, at least 5 people would interfere, playing Curses to make everyone those in combat lose items or just beefing up the monster (I think that level 3 ended up level 30 something by the time all was said and done). And this happened EVERY combat! I think the one or two times people actually did defeat a monster, someone Cursed them to lose a level right after. At the 85 minute mark, no one was past level one, since no monster was feasibly beatable. Any good items people played were lost to Curses, so only a handful of low bonus items were on the table. Finally on the last turn of the game, one player sold all his items and went from level 1 to 3, and he won the game, since he was the highest level. Even though at times it was frustrating, the game itself was just too funny. Everyone beefing up monsters ridiculously like that....epic.
For now, JackA and I wait to see if our fight against the Snails on Speed will be interfered with. Here's hoping it won't be. :noid:

Underneath a slimy, nitro-encrusted rock, the adventurers find...
An Eleven-Foot Pole (+1, 2 Hands, 200)
A Dagger of Treachery (+3, 1 Hand, Thief only, 400)
JackAssterson weighs his options and takes the munchkinly route of grabbing the quick-yet-meager bonus!
I take the eleven-foot pole.
KO Bossy gets the Dagger of Treachery, Which Will Probably Not Help Him Much, But At Least Is Worth 400 GP And Is Thus Very Sellable
(JackAssterson and KO Bossy win the combat, JA goes up one level, JA draws Eleven Foot Pole, Dagger of Treachery, JA chooses Eleven Foot Pole, leaving the Dagger for KO Bossy)

KO Bossy was the next brave soul to enter the Supervillain Dungeon of Doom IN SPACE! After helping fellow Munchkin JackAssterson fight off a nasty group of Snails on Speed, he decided to explore the next room, not knowing what treasures...or peril...awaited him. He flew over to the door and cautiously opened it....
(KO Bossy draws a door card, it's......)
Class: Mutant!
I decide to become a Mutant, now. Whenever I draw a face-up Power, I can immediately open another Door. When I draw a face-down Power, I can choose to show it. If I do, I can draw a face-down door. Also, I can discard a Power card at any time and draw a face-down door.
After becoming a Mutant, instead of looting the room, I'm going to play a Monster from my hand to fight.

From the Super Munchkin rules:
Players will recall that that game has a race called Mutant. This game, Super Mutant, has a class called Mutant. These are entirely different...Yes, if you combine the two games you can play a Mutant Mutant!
However, although a Mutant (race) is completely different from a Mutant (class) monsters can't tell the difference. Any foe that has a bonus or penalty against either type of Mutant has the same kind of bonus or penalty against the other kind.
Frankly, I'd be willing to be to allow Mutants to use Mutant equipment. Seems...mutant-y.
Anyhoo, with all players passing, KO Bossy has won, goes up a level and can now draw...I don't know how many treasures.

The Punster was a worthy foe, baffling the flying KO Bossy with his vast repertoire of Puns. Just to note, I know that Quebbster wanted to try and get a few hands in while all of us were online before. Unfortunately, when I tried to post my turn, HCRealms started giving me problems and then told me the server was too busy and to come back later. So after several hours, I was finally able to get back online, and the first thing I did was post my turn here. Sadly, we aren't all online now. So I apologize for delaying things, but it was outta my hands.

Q. Can I play Go Up a Level cards on another player to make him go up to a level such that a Monster that would previously ignore him will now chase him?
A. This is not the original intent of Go Up a Level cards, but this is such a munchkinly and vile idea that we like it too much to say no.

yeah, I fumbled.
Still, you deserve that treasure, considering you have no items and are the lowest level at the moment. Just remember to be nice to me later on. :)

Need to go back to bed now though.

Bam! JoH beats up the monster with only his robo hands and a friend.
He goes up to level 6.
First treasure card allows me to loan the gm some tapes to go up a level, which, given that you know I have it, I'll play immediately to go up to level 7.
I'll give Quebbster some duct tape. He can use it to combine two one handed items into a single item. Valued at 100 credits.

I kick down the dooooor....
Lawyers!
Level 6 monster worth 2 treasures. Does not attack a Thief.
Bad stuff: Each other player may draw a card from my hand, starting with the player on my left. Remaining cards are discarded.

Goodie. I draw two treasures.
I play Singing and Dancing Sword (+2, no hands), Potion of Halitosis (+2, one-shot), and, since I miscounted the cards in my hand, Doppleganger (doubles combat level in one encounter).

I draw a card...
The Wight Brothers!
Level 16 Undead
Won't chase Level 3 or below -- characters of higher level lose 2 levels even if they escape.
Bad Stuff: You are reduced to Level 1.
2 Levels, 4 Treasures
If I win this fight, I win the game.
I play my Treasure card -- Doppelganger -- suddenly a dashingly handsome Warrior armed with a chainsaw and various other instruments of death appears before me!
Doppelganger summons my exact duplicate, who fights beside me, so I double my effective Level and bonuses (combat level). I may only use this if I am the only player in combat -- which I am.
Doppelganger takes my Combat Level of 15 and doubles it to 30.
Currently beating the Wight Brothers by 15 (since I win ties)

well, this is too good to resist interfering.
I play Wandering Monster and a motha####a Plutonium Dragon joins the fight!
It's level 20, worth 2 levels and 5 treasure, won't pursue anyone of level 5 or below, I believe. Bad stuff is... You are roasted and eaten! (which means you die!)
JackA is currently losing the fight by 5 levels.

Th-th-th-that's all, folks!

God damn, the Wight Brothers are ridiculous. Lose 2 levels even if you succeed in running away, and if you don't you become level 1? Even dying isn't that bad.
JackAssterson
12/17/2009, 19:46
Rolled a 4...which means I both die horribly and go to Level 1.
Ok, the cards I had in hand were
Harpies Level 4, +5 againt wizards, 2 Treasures, Bad Stuff: Lose 2 Levels
Mate (Another monster appears, player is -1 to run away)
Halfling Race Card -1 to Run Away, You may sell one item each turn for double price
My equipment is listed in the following:
Bad-Assterson Bandanna (Head, +3, Human only, 400)
Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment (+3, 2 Hands, Big, 600)
Spiky Knees (Miscellaneous, +1, 200)
Starting with the highest level player, each of you gets to take one card -- the ones not taken are discarded
(I'll reroll my warrior on my next turn)
